I was thinking of you and all our other Canadian forum members when I saw this graphic last night. Wow! These are some incredible numbers. (Obviously, Joe Biden was still president for the first nineteen days of January.) Edited to add: I'd be interested to see some of the figures for border crossings from the eastern provinces. Obviously, these were just from British Columbia. 

Outside of the actual statistics, I have a local story. The town where my son lives is a high tourist area in the southeast, very near the Atlantic coast. You regularly see lots of Quebec license plates on all the roads in January, February and March. There's one particular RV park that's always overflowing with Quebec RV plates. This season? Single digits. They're begging for customers.

After the establishment of Guantanamo Bay in 2002 and the stupid war on terror, not even mentioning the Iraq invasion because of nonexistent weapons of mass destruction after 9/11, I have no difficulty whatsoever believing this. Just on US soil now, no more pretending and doing shit somewhere else.

I've felt that stuff has been a long time coming. 

From where I'm sitting, the US has been committing human rights violations all over the place for a long time. My Canadian friend who was born in Iran and had a job teaching at Syracuse University for a few years while his family was still in Toronto, almost every time he crossed the border, he was held up. He always added about 2 hours to his travel time because of that. Despite his Canadian passport. Because he was born in Iran.

Now this shit is just happening on US soil. And border crossings get scary for white Canadians and Europeans too. For me, your country has been a scary place to visit for over 20 years now. Last time I went to visit for fun was in 2009.

My husband and I have a friend who is a poor disabled senior who will be affected by this. He says the meals already suck when he does get them, and that isn't reliable already. He is waiting for approval for a double hip replacement which now can't happen soon enough. He has no one to help him close by except his daughter who works full time at a distance, and she is already helping him a lot. This is going to put a major strain on them and their lives are already difficult. My husband and I will do what we can but they live too far away for us to do as much as we'd like. This is one of the friends that regularly calls me to rant about Trump.

 You're sounding a lot like me here! This is part of the description of a narcissist. He needs that external approval to avoid feeling like the failure he fears he is given how he knows his father really felt about him next to his brother. I think what he's doing is in his own demented way throwing "food" to his base to keep them in devotion to him. We're seeing him throw them a very literal, crude interpretation of what they want. And the idiots just keep thinking it's great even if it hurts them! Either that or they convince themselves that it won't hurt them! It's a very toxic almost codependence that can only have disastrous results if his base doesn't start waking up. Unfortunately even if they did it would be too little too late at this point. Heaven help us all!

No one is going to suddenly decide to build factories here in the US and pay their employees a US wage. They'll find a way around it and still make the profits they are used to making. How naive.

And Trump, being ever more demented as time goes on thinks going about tariffs to an extreme degree is a good idea, but at this point it's mostly that he's just burning the house down around him to get back at his enemies, which is most of the world by now, not just US Democrats. And given what I've read and heard, lots of luck talking him into scaling them back at this point. He's been waiting decades to do this.

And what really boggles my mind is how big financial gurus are willing to stand by the tariffs like they're a good idea despite what's happening to the stock market. If anyone should know better, it's them. The extent of their blind loyalty to this guy is pretty shocking. I think they think the markets are going to rebound in a big way. Do they really? With threats of a recession going on? I'd like to know just how they think that. What kind of crazy logic and denial of reality is necessary to think that? And they expect us to trust them with our money??

For pretty much our entire existence.  Ask Native Americans.  Ask African Americans. Ask immigrants who don't come from places like Norway.  Ask Muslims or anyone who looks Middle Eastern. Ask women. Ask the LGTBQ community.  Ask people who aren't rich.  And those are just people in our country. They will all tell you the USA can and does suck a lot of the time.

There are procedures in place to defend against medicare fraud. Cutting investigators makes that harder. They aren’y against fraud. Trump is a convicted fraudster. They are against giving things to people who aren’t rich.

On a lighter note. The references to JD Vance and a couch. Has anyone seen the "Cats on a Couch" videos on Instagram? They are laugh-out-loud funny. The whole thing was apparently started by two guys (who John Oliver featured on his show) who wanted to see if the cats got more followers than JD Vance. And they have!

One of the best things? There is someone singing during the videos - in a kind of semi-nasal voice that goes .."We're in the middle of a hostile government takeover, I want to talk about it but I'll be late for work" and continues. I don't know the rest of the song because I don't have Instagram, so I get cut off after the first verse.

I saw large eggs in Walmart for $4.99 two days ago. That's almost half what they were a couple of weeks ago. I bought them yesterday at my local ShopRite with a coupon for $3.99, again half the price of 2 weeks ago.

BUT, don't believe Trump's bragging. He's the luckiest bastard in the world. The main reason egg prices are falling is because the avian flu has been contained - for now. Could it be that the avian flu subsides in the Spring just like human flu? I don't know. But whatever, once again he's an opportunist, ready to take advantage of a situation to make himself look great even if he doesn't deserve it. And his followers buy it!

Over the years Twitter has brought us many gifts with the JD Vance/Couch tweet being the final one. One guy decides to pull a prank, and JD can never live it down. Sometimes the internet truly does deliver.

Well yes, he always gets filtered information. Politicians doo because they are surrounded by people who want their good and are invested in their success.
 

Also he doesn’t actually seek out information. He doesn’t read.  he has been saying it will get bad, so it is happening. He doesn’t care about anyone else.

Well, this is what he was doing last night.  Hanging out on a golf course that he owns making money off of a Saudi- owned LIV Golf Tournament.

Trump says things are 'going very well' after worst stock market drop in years over tariffs.

“The markets are going to boom, the stock is going to boom, the country is going to boom,” he said when asked about the market as he left the White House to fly to one of his Florida golf clubs.

This is good thought, and I was just thinking something kind of opposite - does he actually understand the chaos he's causing and just keeps one-upping himself, throwing another plot-twist at us to see if his sycophants will continue to bend the knee and say, "Yes, Sir!  Great idea, Sir!  Keep 'em coming!"  Like, is even HE surprised at what he's been able to get away with so he keep playing and this is all just something fun to occupy him in between rounds of golf?  

I feel like the people of the US are tiny mice, and he is a giant orange cat who bats us around with his slimy paw when he's bored, then he takes a nap, wakes up with another hairball, and coughs it up in the form of some new insane concept of a plan.  It's all too much to be real and yet, here we are.

Word on the street is that Brand quickly became a Trump loving Christian once he caught wind that the proverbial shit was going to hit the fan for him.  Ducking for cover with that crowd because ... reasons.
