How rancid was that (alleged) comment?!

Odd to say that, if he'd repeated it, he would have been cancelled, and then to claim he then went and repeated it to Sue and Caroline. Maybe he misspoke and meant if he repeated it now he would be cancelled...

Given how much Rome twisted Kyle's recorded words in the retelling, one wonders about this report.

Why would anyone even now believe a word Rome says?

I don't think anything Kyle said about Sue and Caroline is worse than what we say here. And I guess Kyle thought he was expressing his opinion to a friend. Rome obviously is still bitter and he wants to sour people towards Kyle. That's fucked up.

Sam dismissed the buoy immediately as probably not important and even Genevieve complained of not wanting to get wet and having to worry about sharks.

Cripes.

Sam’s and Genevieve’s virtually identical reactions to the buoy floating offshore actually made me wonder if this might not have been an unexpected peek behind the curtain at what everyday life on an island in Fiji for the contestants might really be like.  Their beaches all face the open Pacific, after all, so it’s not too outlandish to surmise random ocean junk - including things like buoys and floats lost off of fishing nets - washing up on the beach or carried past shore wouldn’t be a fairly regular occurrence.

It could be that after spending Days 1-3 wearing themselves out jumping on every piece of flotsam and jetsam to come floating their way, the contestants have simply become inured to a never-quite-ending array of random garbage bobbing past at the break; Sam’s and Genevieve’s immediate initial reactions were both variations on a common “Oh No Not Again” vibe that sounded born of hard-won experience. 😄

Rome was there to cast for Jeff's job, and it became clear when his last words were "I hope I gave some entertainment". It was obvious he was playing a role, a character. A jerk character maybe, but a character nevertheless.

I rolled my eyes and went back to my Angry Birds game when Jeff invited Rome to take his seat.  I know, New Era, New Jeff, etc. blah blah.  Next season he'll invite someone to read the votes, or snuff someone's torch.  I like my Probst to come with a heavy side of snark.  And I don't think anyone but Probst should have that seat.  Stop being nice!  This is Survivor!  It's not summer camp!  (shakes fist at kids who are on my lawn).

I think the producers arranged the whole mud challenge to make sure Kyle would be forced to wash his hair.  🚿

This reminded me of Probst putting the immunity necklace around Ian's neck on Palau, and commenting on how awful he smelled.  Come to think of it, Kyle to me is a blend of Ian and JT, that's probably why I'm rooting for him.

Survivor has been on for so long now, my hopes of getting a cast that's there to play the actual game versus wanting to launch their careers is dwindling.

I think there is room for a PhD dissertation on the inevitable, inescapable deterioration of a tv program over its long life span. If a show is on tv long enough, it morphs into something else as it panders to the lowest audience expectations and the producers lose interest. A key element is the show and its actors or participants becoming self aware, knowing they are part of the zeitgeist rather than trying to just entertain or in the case of reality shows, to just win the competition. Once it happens, there's no going back. It's ruined so many shows of all types over the years, including reality shows, dramas, and sitcoms.

Anyone remember the original The Real World on MTV? Great example. The first few years were a serious, insightful documentary series about young people living together and experiencing real things. Then the producers realized the viewers just liked seeing the cast get drunk and screw and have fights, so the show became nothing but that, giving them a luxurious house with plenty of booze and no need to do anything real in their lives. Each new cast had people who clearly wanted to be the villain or the sweetheart or the good guy and they played those roles, trying to maximize screen time. It was a real waste of a good premise.

He has had a contestant cohost the last two seasons.

Three seasons of contestant co-hosts.

S1 (S44) had Brittany Crapper, a Survivor producer, along with Jeff and Jay.

S2 (S45) had Rick Devens, from Old Era Survivor (Edge of Extinction)

S3 (S46) had Dee Valladares, the winner of S45

S4 (S47, the current season) has Charlie Davis, runner-up from S46

I stand corrected.  Just as long as Rome isn’t next on the list.

And I admit, if felt good to see Andy and Rome's faces immediately fall when they saw their names written, especially given this was right after they were laughing about enjoying Anita's blindside.

I died laughing. His smug turned off real quick.

Andy at TC still being all happy and gloating about Anika being voted out.  I really hope he's next.

Me, you, and probably Anika at home, wishing for Andy to experience the "fun" of a blindside. Please Survivor gimme it.

So here's how the schoolyard pick 'em went down:

Any real surprise at who was picked last?

He is so embarrassing, I can't look.

@Tango64 your post was great, and I agree. I just finished the chapter on Survivor in Cue the Sun! The Invention of Reality TV by Emily Nussbaum, and was fascinating reading. There were crew/production who brought up the issues with the way Survivor changed from the OG vision and the casting really early on after the first season.

Rest of the episode was great - the editors really had a great time with Rome and his speech about home teams etc, and how he's playing the game at 100 and Sol is like negative 55.

I was so happy for Sol when at tribal, like he earned that reprieve from Rome!

I was alittle surprised Genevieve didn't fight at all for Rome since she threw in with Rome at their last tribal. But so far the last couple of episodes since I've known of her existence she is playing well. I like all the members of the red tribe left, kinda rooting for them.

Andy with his "Anika had my name in her mouth since day 2" like man you had a MELTDOWN at a challenge and run over your whole tribe with a bus - she had every right to say your name.

Also still getting the weird vibes between what Andy perceives Rachel should be like towards him. He was so happy to see her down and at the "bottom" since she didn't baby him and admit her undying loyalty to him those first couple of days at the beach - seemed like he was happy she was being punished for it.

Also glad that Caroline and Tiyana put it together about Sue's idol after seeing all the red paint again.

I was hoping for a tribe swap into 2 teams instead of a merge but oh well. I love swaps because it really changes up the dynamics of people's games, and allows for different connections to be made.

With her red and white striped shirt, it was almost like a Where's Waldo in reverse.

Jeff, what's the point of making such a big deal of a schoolyard pick if you're not going to show the damn thing. Who were the captains? Who was picked last? This is the kind of content 90-minute episodes are dying for!

I think the schoolyard pick outcome  comes into play next episode.  Should be fun.

Good grief now I'm glad they didn't include the schoolyard pick. They are really building up a framework around Andy aren't they? That can't be for nothing. And Jeff Probst is so far up his own ass it's coming out of his mouth again. Between moments like this and the torturous Tribal Councils he really does believe he's Dr. Phil and this show is some sort of therapy camp.

Also glad that Caroline and Tiyana put it together about Sue's idol after seeing all the red paint again.

That still bugs me that they saw Sue with all the red paint/supposed blood and......just took it at face value?  Didn't stop to think, OMG, that's more blood that would come from a scratch, and if "playing with the machete"resulted in that much supposed blood, then where is the detached limb or bone deep gash?  Where are their other tribemates?   They just shrugged.  Maybe Sue intimated about some deeply private perimenopause issue that caused them to ick out and move on.  But still......that red paint was an orange-y bright red, not a deep blood red.  Then days later when they're all merged and other folks point out the still freshly red paint they go "OooooOOOOOooooooh!"

Sigh.

Queen Sandra would have strung her up, made her talk, and use the information to her advantage.  No shrugging and walking away for her!

Yeo, Kyle is like a southern fried Ian, my goodwill toward Ian makes me root for Kyle by default. I liked Kyle and Sol together, I hope they continue to work together in the future.

Sol is so low key that it's easy to overlook that he made some pretty good moves this episode. The way he undermined all of Rome's attempts to stir the pot without showing that he has a personal grudge against Rome was pretty smooth. And he's an underrated challenge performer, he whipped through that course with an agility I didn't realize he had.

I've never liked the amulet advantage so I didn't care that they burned it. It seems complicated and hard to envision how to use it effectively.

I was glad to see Rome go but then he went and made me feel sad for him on the way out. Not a fan of his vague comments about Kyle though, if you're gonna bring something up, then bring the damn thing up. Not at all a fan of "he said something really bad, but I'm not gonna say what it was."

Andy and his gorgeous teeth and beautiful hair live to see another day.

Andy really is striking looking, he always draws my eye when he's onscreen even when he's being a giant doofus. I like his cozy sweater too.

The best way to use the amulet idol is after the merge, to engineer the ouster of the other 2 people who hold it so that you now have a complete & independent immunity idol without any complications.

That's easier if all 3 don't go back and immediately spill their guts after the Journey, like these 3 did.

I agree.  It's very passive aggressive and usually leads people to imagine something much worse than the reality.

It's going to be a whole load more relaxing without Rome coming for my boy Sol, and with Kyle and Sol being sympatico. I loved the way Kyle said, 'What a dick!' about Rome.

If Sue gets in there, too, it will be a great season for me. But then she does like to hold a grudge. I really don't care about anyone else left.

At this point, most of thilesw contestants are idiots so I'd be fine with a Sol, Kyle, Sue final 3.
