No, but my brother and I are planning a small dinner party for them next weekend. I also went over while they were out for lunch and left a card (I always get them a restaurant gift card - $1 for each year. My dad had to do something in the evening so they went out earlier.

I never met a cake I couldn't smash.

Seriously, I had never heard of smash cake. So I looked it up. It's a small cake for the birthday of a 1 year old, that they can easily smash with their fingers.

Genuine question and not being snarky: can 1 year olds not smash cupcakes?

I do think that smash cake looks delicious, though, either way. And now I want one.

When I was reading your description I thought "otherwise known as a cupcake??"

It was way back in the '90s but my two sons sure could! IMO, if one year olds can't smash a standard cupcake, we've failed as a species!

Ours did too (way back in 80's and early 90's)

Re smash cakes/cupcakes/steakbones... my 1 yr olds smashed everything! I have evidence (photos) of many literal faceplants into whatever I'd created (I guess their tiny fingers weren't fast enough). Chocolate was always a good look for pictures. LOL

I continued the tradition with the grandkids ;-) Again, some of my favourite pics.

You've inspired me to make something... how about some 'real' cheesecake with my famous whipped cream/sliced cotton candy green grapes/strawberies topping?

They're usually bigger than a cupcake. My cousin's wife made one for their daughter and it was probably big enough to have at least four decent-sized slices. I think it was also sugar-free or low-sugar...not that they're actually meant to be eaten (other than what baby manages to get into their mouth...).

That cousin's brother's wife just gave their son a (standard cupcake-size) muffin with a candle in it; a healthy recipe that she made for him often because he liked them. (The real cake was a rich fudgy chocolate cake that I certainly wouldn't have wasted on having a baby smash it. Kid's about 10 now and I still remember that cake.)

I stayed out of the conversation for that reason. I truly abhor pictures/videos of babies smeared with food.

Even though I posted the picture and recipe above, I had no idea what the "smash" part meant. It just looked like a yummy, healthy cake with a "1" for those of us who got 1/5 (and others who wanted a virtual slice).
Food waste is troubling to me. I have to hold my tongue when I'm visiting the grandkids.
I apologize for not googling a word usage I did not know. I try to never do that.

Oh. Well.
Here's hoping🤞 "Smash cake" will be a Jeopardy! clue or response — maybe even a FJ!

3/5 with no *. I couldn't get my brain to come up with Vonnegut in time and it took me too long to place Stax records in the right city or I might have gotten to the Lorraine Motel. If you ever are in Memphis, do visit the National Civil Rights Museum in the Lorraine Motel - very well presented and an excellent example of preserving the existing space.

1/5 (Vonnegut). I clearly neglected to eat my Breakfast of Champions last week.

I forgot to post, so I missed the whole conversation about smash cake. I’ve seen pictures of babies with cake all over their face, but I never knew it had a name. I just thought it was messy babies being messy. (And I don’t think it’s cute, either. It just makes me want to grab a washcloth and start wiping.)

So instead of a smash cake, how about a tasty smashburger? It’s designed to go into faces, not all over them.

PROFOUND APOLOGIES!!!!!!

I had to have my computer repaired and it took a long time to back up my files and then the computer had to be repaired. The scores are as follows:

WEEK 30 (31 MAR): 4/5, one *.

WEEK 31 (7 APR): 4/5, no *.

WEEK 32 (14 APR): 4/5, one *.

Getting files back is a nightmare! Been through it myself.

Pretty easy to fill in the spreadsheet, with those scores. :) Well done!
