I had pre-guessed Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsberg for the category of 1960s PEOPLE, but I didn't know Timothy Leary had been in prison. In 7th grade in 1965, our English teacher wanted us to be prepared for High School, so he assigned us research papers with footnotes. Mom dropped me off at the next town's library with index cards to take notes while she went shopping. My paper was about therapeutic uses of LSD. Wikipedia indicates Leary wasn't imprisoned until the following year. 12 hours ago, ams1001 said: Week 45: 2/5 (Monday/Friday, performative and Sacagawea) Same. Week 45: 2/5 A Wegmans across the street from a medical appointment had wonderful biscottis for dunking. Sadly, the Wegmans in my neighborhood does not have the same. Apparently they are made in a local monastery by monks. I promise to share if I get more. To paraphrase the old Oprah meme: Everyone gets 5 biscottis! Clanstarling July 20 Author Share July 20 (edited) Week 45 – July 15 – Two Asterisks 1. NEWER WORDS - Philosophers use it for language that accompanies an action, like "I dub thee knight"; it also means done for show or signal (performative) 2. *1960s PEOPLE - He said that California prison psych tests he took were ones he had designed, so he made himself look docile & unlikely to escape; then he did (Timothy Leary) 3. * LITERARY CHARACTERS - In a 1980 National Book Award winner, we learn this title character gets his name from the rank of his late dad--technical sergeant (TS Garp) 4. SHOW BIZ MARRIAGES - Married since 1977, the year of this band's 1st album, 2 members referenced another album with their 2023 "Remain in Love" tour (Talking Heads) 5. 19th CENTURY WOMEN - The National Park Service says there are more statues of her, often with her infant son, than any other American woman (Sacagawea) Edited July 20 by Clanstarling 1 4 Link to comment
Driad July 20 Share July 20 Week 45: 3/5 + 2*. Garp was a total guess but it counts. It's stone fruit season so I'll bring fruit salad: peaches, plums, cherries, etc. 1 1 3 Link to comment
Prevailing Wind July 20 Share July 20 I got two, one of 'em being the Leary asterisk. I'm bummed. My cat's bummed, too. It was her birthday yesterday and I had to take her to the vet for her monthly arthritis shot. The dance with the carrier was NOT fun. What a crappy birthday. I might just go back to bed.and bring Stella with me. We can cuddle. 2 4 1 Link to comment

Trey July 20 Share July 20 1/5 Thank you, Sacagewea! I did also consider Mary Todd Lincoln but stuck with Sacagewea. Fruit salad sounds lovely. I am picking up nectarines today so will bring some to add to the fruit salad. 5 Link to comment

DXD526 July 20 Share July 20 2/5, TH/F. TH was an instaget, having been a Talking Heads fan for going on 50 years. But it was an unusual FJ, in that it would be hard to figure out for anyone who isn't a fan, I think. Chris and Tina being married isn't common knowledge, nor do I consider them to be 'showbiz' really, not in the classic sense. But it was still great to have the Heads be an answer to FJ! 3 2 Link to comment

30 Helens July 23 Share July 23 Oops, forgot to post my pathetic results! 1/5, but at least it was an asterisk (Garp). I was mad at myself for missing Talking Heads, because I listened to them a lot back in the day. But while I knew that Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz were married, I thought the band split up a long time ago so they never occurred to me. If the Special Brownies are still available I'll take one. 4 1 Link to comment
Grundoon59 July 23 Share July 23 2/5 with one *. Got Leary & Sacagawea (who would make interesting dinner party guests). Mad at myself about Garp but couldn't find the answer anywhere in my brain. Know of the Talking Heads of course but not enough to answer questions about them. Monday's grammar question stumped me entirely. 5 1 Link to comment

Clanstarling July 27 Author Share July 27 Our last week...😪 Here are the answers. Winners and other awards to come sometime in the near(ish) future Week 46 – July 22 – One Asterisk 1. AUTHORS - "Love" is within the titles of 3 of his most famous books; a fourth, "The Rainbow", calls love "the flower of life" (D. H. Lawrence) 2. *HISTORIC SPOTS - Known for a fabled event of 1881, it housed an auto repair shop after the disappearance of the horse & buggy (the OK Corral) 3. U.S. PLACE NAMES - This name of a national forest means "fool" & may be one Apache group's name for another group; it's also a problematic TV character (Tonto) 4. FAMOUS WOMEN - Adding to her nickname, one legend claimed that earlier in life, she was saved from drowning by family friend Mark Twain (Molly Brown) 5. ANCIENT ANIMALS - The first fossils of these creatures with an elongated 4th digit were described in 1784 by naturalist Cosimo Collini (pterodactyls) 3 Link to comment
secnarf July 27 Share July 27 Finishing off the season at 0/5. I averaged 1.2 per week (down from last year's 1.5) and got a total of 54 correct, down from last year's 69. Also fewer asterisks - 9 this year, 12 last year. On the plus side, I did get my first perfect week this year! In celebration - a tiramisu. Shaped like a 0 in honour of my most frequent score (16 weeks this year), but containing lady fingers shaped like a 1 in honour of my second most frequent score (15 weeks this year). 4 2 4 Link to comment
