So from that, I figured it was probably the second word so that it can follow the first, assuming the language would have a similar grammatical structure and that, like in English, the word meaning "palace" would come second. Far from an instaget for me, given the above reasoning, but I got there just in the nick of time. Good thinking! I didn't catch the "follows" clue or I might have got it. I should pay more attention to every word in the clue and maybe I'll get more FJs. 1 2 Link to comment

Every time I have ever seen a case debated on the internet it has either been a situation where the host reminded the contestant about phrasing in the Jeopardy round before accepting the response, the host rejected the response in the Double Jeopardy round, or the contestant said "what's" in such a hurry it was easy to miss but if you replay it's definitely there. I spent an inordinate amount of time reading the meaning and origin of names and I guessed Guinevere as soon as I saw Jennifer in the clue without reading a single other word. I wondered if the contestants might not have made the connection to Welsh since the spelling owes more to French and I think the Welsh version is more like Gwynhyfar Gwenhwyfar. 4 Link to comment

Not just wrong because the rules are not only for the studio, they are part of what the viewing audience expects to see, but also because it seems unlikely that they would stop the clock to check anything between the contestant ringing in and giving their response and therefore you would have to be inexplicably desperate for time to go to the trouble of making an edit at that spot. 2 hours ago, proserpina65 said: Yep Hellman play is ALWAYS The Little Foxes. chicagofan October 23, 2023 Share October 23, 2023 Fair to middlin' game today - not great, but not horrible either. J round was better than DJ - ran "The Real Old College Try" and got 4 in "A Woman of the World" and "Stupid Proverbs". TSs were Padua (thank you Kiss Me Kate), old soldiers never die and money. Only one good category in DJ - got 4 in "Smart Answers". Guess I'm equally smart and stupid. TSs/missed DDs were Baltic Sea (DD) and Bringing Up Baby". Should have gotten FJ, but I talked myself out of Motown - somehow I thought it was a little later than 1959. I don't know why, but I went with Capitol Records. I should have made the connections in the clue - Lincoln-Mercury/car assembly line/Detroit/Motown, but alas, no. 2 Link to comment

Ran Stupid Proverbs (guess I'm stupider than them), missed one in Woman of the World, two in The Really Old College Try, Just Kidding, and Always Say Never, and three in The Name of the Game. In DJ I ran "Baby" Movies, missed two in People with Muppet Names and No, I Don't Need a Doctor, three in Smart Answers, four in The History Channel, and five in A River Runs To It. Had to think a few seconds but I got FJ, at least. secnarf October 24, 2023 Share October 24, 2023 I do not have nearly enough American "common knowledge" to equate Lincoln-Mercury with Detroit. If you asked me what city Motown is associated with, I wouldn't have been able to tell you. Somehow, though, this question immediately reminded me of the infamous Barry/Berry debacle and from that I knew the answer was Motown. That clue, from 2020, reads: In 2019, at a 60th anniversary event in Detroit, this producer announced his retirement saying he had "come full circle". Tonight's clue: Before creating this record label in 1959, its founder worked on a Lincoln-Mercury assembly line The only link I can find there is that 2019 - 60 years = 1959. I had never heard of Berry Gordy before the 2020 clue (and tonight could only remember "Berry"). Anyways, it was somehow an instaget for me. No idea how that happened. 6 Link to comment

So I could not possibly get Mercury Records out of my head for FJ, even though I knew they would not have the word Mercury in the clue if that was the correct response. 30 Helens October 24, 2023 Share October 24, 2023 (edited) “Calvin and Hobbes” is not the same as “Calvin”. Adding Garfunkel when asking about a solo Simon work would definitely be wrong, but I think it's more like having a clue that refers to this lead singer of the group that sang Baby Love and responding with "Diana Ross and the Supremes". Or some of the cases where they ask for the title of a song and the response is a lyric that starts with the title of the song and adds a couple more words. As long as the additional words don't turn it into something completely different they accept the response. Ken tried to make that clear by confirming that Calvin was the boy. 2 Link to comment

SomeTameGazelle October 25, 2023 Share October 25, 2023 I guessed Sweden for ärtsoppa since I was sure it must be a Scandinavian language. Mildly annoyed with Ken for inserting his comment about the Vegas sign before Steve's Bellagio response.
