Chit-Chat: What's On Your Mind Today?

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

We all have been drawn into off-topic discussions, me included. There's little that's off-topic when it comes to Chit Chat, so the only ask is that you please remember that this is the Chit Chat topic and that there's a subforum for all things health and wellness here.

do the same thing with the paper towels, LOL. Do you also save slightly used paper towels for another use or two? If they are not dirty with any grease or food on them I use them to wipe down the counter, sink or stove

Yes! Exactly. My son-in-law does too; my daughter thinks it’s a little weird.😆

And I also save plastic containers from the supermarket and take out to use again and again.

Same.
I only recently learned that my kids were embarrassed by my reusing large yogurt containers in the 80s (instead of Tupperware).
These days I put leftovers in a Corelle bowl and set a small Corelle plate over it.
(Corelle because it’s lightweight and can go in the microwave)

The compostable utensils I use are from Walmart, like these.

Thanks!

I listened to a podcast a while back and the fellow on it was discussing recycling (not composting) and the pros and cons of paper vs washing, styrofoam which is forever, etc. and that to use regular dishes and cloths and wash them vs. disposable perhaps that would degrade over time sometimes is a wash as far as resource usage and eventual benefit or not.  He said he was not taking a position at all.  It takes energy to produce the paper, etc. and then if one uses washable stuff, energy to get the water, make the soap, then if a dryer is used, etc. Not very easy to ferret it out.  Then, the grandson did a paper on recycling in college I think and he decided that individual community recycling is great, but to make a real difference everyone as in all, would need to do it with a general overarching plan.  That being said, in our family, him included, we do what we can on an individual/family/household basis.  If nothing else, makes us feel good about it.

On the wrapping for the green waste/organic bin, I had to stop my housekeeper from taking two new paper towels to wrap things she was putting in my green can!!  She was used to when I composted almost all the food waste and it went directly into a compost bin and had trouble with the green bin concept.  That would be a good use for used paper towels.  We (the neighbors and I and now my housekeeper) use small take out paper bags, pharmacy bags, etc. if we put something in the green bin that really needs to be bagged.  Otherwise if I have some yard waste in the bin, I just make sure the kitchen stuff goes on top of yardwaste no bag required.

This reminds me of the great debate with regard to disposable diapers vs cloth diapers that erupted around the time my kids were in diapers.  Basically most of the conversations I saw about this came to down to each "side" having already decided which way they were going to go and spending a lot of time and energy defending that and never convincing anyone to change their minds.

My SIL was saying we're doing disposables!  No question.  Otherwise we have to buy another washer and do plumbing for it.  No way my clothes go in a washer where the diapers have been.  He didn't think quite far enough ahead to toilet training, but by then he was a little more realistic about children.

Today was one of those days I did like nothing.  Only left the house to get a few groceries.

And I feel better for having done so

I wish I hadn't told my parents I'd go to their house for dinner tonight, as I've done absolutely nothing but watch football and nap with my cat all day, and would love to continue doing that this evening.  Oh well, at least there's more football.  And my dad is grilling ribeye steaks.  So I'll go drag myself into the shower and see if I perk up.

Yes, exactly, I ended up in a stalemate over it after thinking over all these factors so I feel better about using the paper towels and plates and washing the rest by hand even though experts think it uses more water to wash dishes by hand than in the dishwasher, which doesn't really impact anyone else in my case because I'm on well water with septic. And I wouldn't put a lot of things in the dishwasher anyway because it's too harsh on stuff like steak knives and some cooking equipment including certain frying pans, plastic spatulas, etc.

Also I'm very much a germaphobe and I like having a fresh clean paper towel to wipe my hands with when I'm touching food. Plus I already deal with cleaning my sponges and everything else re-usable so it's a little less work for me. As I get older I have to pick my causes, lol.

I had a lazy day too, which has actually been a rare thing these days. The weather was suddenly a little damp out which has not been the case in a while as we've had nice clear skies and cool but not cold weather for over a month now. So I just felt tired and unmotivated. I had planned for more strenuous housework but only got the floors done and made lunch and dinner. Otherwise I was watching YouTube travel videos as my husband and I think over our next vacation for next year. Neither of us are into football or team sports in general although I do love baseball as long as I'm not forced to watch it on a regular basis, lol.

That said, what I would give to be able to have a steak dinner with my parents again! I know I sound probably sound like that insufferable old lady but after they're gone you'll never regret going over there even when you didn't feel like it. I have no regrets that way as I was close with my parents and saw both of them a lot before they died. I feel very fortunate that I was able to do that because I know people that didn't or couldn't and now regret it.

I hope you perked up and enjoyed yourself!

I used to think my mother was weird for doing those things but I'm like an insurance commercial in that I've been steadily turning into my parents since then and I 100% own it, LOL. My husband is worse than I am - he washes out every large yogurt container like he wants to keep it but we already have enough so I end up having to throw out the older ones and replace them with the new ones.

The thing is I also have enough Rubbermaid and Ziploc containers too but it seems like I always need one in a size I don't have. So I have a storage bin full of containers out in the garage. I know, I need to get rid of some, lol.

I’ve long suspected those water-use studies presume those washing dishes by hand are running water the entire time.
I wash a sink (or bin) full, and then turn on the water to rinse. Then I turn it off while washing the next tub/sink/bin-full.
If I successfully find the methodology, I let all y’all know.

I go over for Sunday dinner almost every week.*  This was the first one in quite a while, because while my mom was recovering from surgery and adjusting to her new cancer meds, I did all their cooking (meaning dinners; my dad handled breakfast/lunch and any snacks) for months, so once or twice a week I took food over, helped my dad with anything he needed a second pair of hands for, chatted a bit, and then came home so they could eat early (we are hours apart on our preferred meal times, so for Sunday dinners we compromise at 7:30, but when she was already struggling with appetite, I wanted her to eat at her ideal time, I just cannot eat a meal at 5:00 in the afternoon).

I spend Wednesday through Saturday with them in their motorhome at Thanksgiving.  Christmas Eve dinner and all day Christmas.  All our birthdays.  Mother's Day and Father's Day.  I'm glad we live close enough to do that, and are emotionally close enough despite our issues to want to do that.  I'm going to miss them with every fiber of my being, for the rest of my days, when they're gone.  But, because of all this, I'm not going to regret I didn't spend more time, so I'm going to freely groan "Ugh, I don't wanna go anymore" when that's my mood.  And when I wake up already not in the mood, I call and say unless it's something that has to be cooked that night, we need to do Monday night instead.

*For anyone wondering, no, this does not mean my mom does all the work for our family dinners.  We used to alternate, one week at mine and the next at theirs, but as they got older they were happier being at their house -- my mom can retire to her recliner afterward and put her feet up, they can just traipse down the hall and go to sleep when I leave rather than having to drive home in the dark, etc.  So it's always at their house, and I'd make the salad (I make really good salads) and help with the rest.  Now, they (which means my mom unless it's something on the grill) make the main course, and I make the salad and side(s).  My dad, since he doesn't cook, takes care of the dishes.

My cat George, was sleeping in different cupboards in the kitchen. He started opening the doors under the sink, and sleeping there, until the weather turned cold, and now he's on the couch, most of the time.

Cutie was sleeping in the bathroom cupboard, and now he's on the landing.

Here is the recipe:

1 cup diced ham or bacon

2 c tater tots (still frozen)

1 dozen whisked eggs

1 can (8) Pillsbury Grands biscuits (diced up…raw)

2 c cheese (your choice)

1/4 c milk

All mixed together. Put in greased Bundt or casserole dish. Bake at 400F for 45 minutes. When done, flip over onto platter and cut and serve. Or in crock pot 6-8 hours on low.

Quoting myself-made it this morning in the casserole dish. I should have checked it at about 35-40 minutes. 45 was a bit too long. It was ok, but a bit dry, I think. I froze the leftovers. When I thaw and reheat, I might put some butter over it and see if that will “wet” it.

So where does everyone get their entertainment news from? Gizmodo is dying. Yes, it's unblockable autoplaying videos again. But the great thing, it doesn't just have TV and movie news and articles, but books, games, and even science stuff. Is there anywhere else with that range?

Haha, I get my “entertainment” news here. I rely on the posters here to filter out what I might be interested in. Sorry, I guess that doesn’t answer your question.

I found your recipe intriguing and tried it last weekend. It turned out to be about 90% biscuit, a lot less eggy and cheesy than I was expecting. I think if I try it again, I’ll use one of those mini sleeves of biscuits, or maybe bake half of the biscuits separately.

I actually had to bake it longer than the recommended time. Definitely a ymmv situation!

Pretty much the same.
@Anduin, do you follow the Milestone Moments: All The Celebrity Vitals thread?
I'll follow links in the posts if I'm interested, or Google the name and "cause of death."
I currently have access to the NYT and WaPo;
so if the news is a big enough deal to get covered in those publications,
I'll often share their articles on this site as free Gift Links.
Circle Of Life … and death; marriage and divorce, etc.🙃

But most shows have "Media" threads with links to Deadline etc., especially near the start of a new season.

If you're talking about reality TV stuff; I got nuthin'.

The great thing about Gizmodo is coving all sorts of things. IT doesn't just stick to TV and movies, or games, or whatever. That's what I want.

Given that the moon affects the tide, and people are ugly bags of mostly water, maybe people who drink a lot of water are more affected than others? I don't know, that's just off the top of my head.

"The average patient volume for the three sites was higher on supermoon days than on non-supermoon days. However, the difference was not statistically different (p=0.06). Just letting folks know that I got up in the wee hours and Early Voted ! I managed to be the very first in a long line at the polling place when the doors opened but alas due to the clerk needing to be taught step-by-step by the manager how to operate the online registry, I wound up being the 8th or 9th actual voter.Oh well. Still, I'm very happy it's DONE!

That's great.  I live in the land of peaches and voter suppression so it is always a crap shoot on whether I can vote.  Once recently I was almost denied because my hair was a different color.   Went to DMV for a new picture and people there said that hair color doesn't matter. Well, to some people it does.

I’m going to try on Monday, because my dad might not be home on time to get me there, on the actual day.

when I asked him if he could please take off Christmas Eve, he said that he’s pushing it, taking off thanksgiving,  Christmas Day, and new year’s. I knew that was where his job was going, this summer. This bit should have been in peeves.

Early voting starts here on Monday and I'm trying to decide if I'm voting early or waiting until November 5th. There's something exciting about voting on the "official" election day, I feel like I'm part of something big. However, I also don't want to be waiting in line for hours.

I got my covid booster yesterday and while I always get sick after each one, it wasn't as bad this time, thankfully. I'm waiting until next week to get my flu shot, getting both at the same time last year knocked me on my ass.

For many many years I happily voted in person unless I knew in advance that I would have a conflict. My precinct never had much of a wait so I realized I was fortunate on that point.

But since 2020 I’ve started being a little more paranoid. What if I wake up with the flu? What if I have to go out of town at the last minute to help a family member?

So, tl/dr, I voted early in-person and the website confirmed my ballot has been received. Jimmy Carter and I have one less thing to worry about.

We've had voting by mail here for a long time; you used to have to request an "absentee" ballot in advance, but then at some point any registered voter could mail in their ballot.  And then at some other point they set up ballot collection bins.  There are early (in-person) voting stations, and then still the big production on Election Day.  I had always voted in person on Election Day, until 2020.  It felt weird not to do the usual routine, and I missed it.  But by the next election, the convenience of just dropping off my ballot while on a stroll whenever I wanted was too good to pass up.

This is how I feel, too. Plus, voting early, sure, your part is done, but then there's the waiting until election day to see how things turned out :p.

But it is nice to have it done, and early voting is a good thing to have and so doing my part to help ensure it remains a thing is worthwhile as well.

I've been lucky in that I've never had any big side effects from the vaccines. A bit of an achy arm for a day or so, but that's about it. Normally I got the Moderna one, but those weren't in stock this time, so I got Pfizer ysterday instead. No issues thus far though.

I always get a slight fever after getting the COVID booster, but didn't this time. I'm wondering if it's because I got the Pfizer one, because all the other times, I got the Moderna one. No reaction this time at all, not even a sore arm. I waited a good 2 weeks afterwards to get the flu shot.

I had a sore arm the first time I got it (Pfizer) but was fine for all subsequent doses so far.  The new one won't be available in Ontario for another week and a half so I'll have to wait until then.  I plan until after Halloween, just in case (because I'm not only taking the little one out but am volunteering at his class party).

I've only ever gotten Pfizer and it's always made me sick, although the amount of time I'm sick gets shorter with each booster.

Funny little tidbit, the pharmacist hit a vein in my arm and I had a small river of blood flowing down my arm while she scrambled to grab cotton balls. Then she was marveling over watching the injection site bruise in real time. None of it hurt, but she gave me a little sticker that they usually hand out to children. 🤣

Why do we almost always get some proposition that requires research?  Last election one of my kids kindly deconstructed it for me.

The county closed our polling place quite a few years ago and made us all mail in voters.  We can, of couse, go in somewhere and vote, but I don't have any neighbors that I know of that do that.

In Calif, the initiative process allows petitioners to put proposed laws on the ballot instead of depending on the State's legislature to propose, debate, & vote on new laws.  The initiative process was created in the early 1900's as a response to the railroads' & other special interests' alleged abuse of the traditional legislative process.

I can appreciate the original basis of the process, but I don't support it now.  I have no expertise in the myriad fields involved, & the public pays our elected representatives to research these issues & represent our collective interests with respect to them.

I recognize exceptions -- such as legalizing marijuana, for example -- but my general response to propositions that are on the ballot through the initiative process is to just ignore them.  I don't vote NO, I just don't vote on them.  Which makes the ballot pretty fast work for me, since there are SO many propositions in Calif!

Signs I’m getting old: I officially prefer Saturday afternoon Mass (which draws a lot of senior citizens, at least in the Catholic churches I’ve been to around here since converting) to Sunday mornings when it’s bound to feel louder because of more kids being around, cars picking up the kids after Sunday school like it’s a McDonald’s drive thru, and doesn’t always feel peaceful if a baby is being baptized and the whole family comes into church talking like they’re walking into a party at home or a hockey game. (I have said in the past that it’s my pet peeve that people feel the need to enter church as loudly as possible; you can tell they think the whole Mass is all about their kid’s baptism and their likely last visit to church until the kid gets first communion…babies get baptized afterward so it’s usually mentioned once in the Mass if at all.)

I’ll still go to Sunday Mass for times the choir is singing or holy days, but if not, I’m really starting to appreciate the vibes of going on Saturday when it’s much quieter and people know how to behave themselves. :) It feels like actual church at those times, and that’s a nice break for me after the sanity of the work week.

I’m registering to vote at my second home this year. My neighbors are doing it too. We are allowed to do that in New York, and there has been a local movement to get people to do it.  There’s a House race for which our votes could make a difference. In NYC we usually don’t feel like our vote makes a difference. We will switch back to NYC  next year for the mayoral race.

Our pharmacist speculates that so few people are getting reactions to either one of the Covid vaccines is because the virus is circulating and we are building up immunity.  Or resistance.  But, that is a good thing.  We had no reactions to the Covid shot and the flu shot just made me sleepy for a day.  Easiest ones so far.

We all have been drawn into off-topic discussions, me included. There's little that's off-topic when it comes to Chit Chat, so the only ask is that you please remember that this is the Chit Chat topic and that there's a subforum for all things health and wellness here.
