Well damn.  He was my sister's favorite on one of her favorite shows.  And while I did enjoy the show and am sad at his passing, it makes me miss my sister even more.

I know what you mean. It was Donny Osmond's birthday yesterday and I missed my sister so much. She loved Donny.

I am like your sister in that I loved Donny back in the day. He brought so much happiness to his fans. He had and still has awesome fans.  Nice memory of your sister.

I always remember his birthday. I forgot to come here and post about it though.

Conan O'Brien's parents died this week within three days of each other.

Thomas O’Brien, an epidemiologist, and Ruth O’Brien, a lawyer, juggled successful careers with raising six children, including the comedy star.

Sad to hear sorry for Conan and his five siblings.  I know there's a Youtube video about his mother's achievements along with comments from the family

Lives worth living and worthy of living. It's so easy to see Conan in both of them physically, but clearly from the article they were the sources of his genius too.

I'm no Conan fan, but that's tough to lose both your parents simultaneously.  The silver lining is that after almost 60 years of marriage, one didn't have to survive long w/o the other.  I'm sure that's a small comfort to the children of Dr. & Mrs. O'Brien.

This happens so very often in couples in long term marriages.  I have 2 friends who lost both of their elderly parents within weeks of each other fairly unexpectedly.

Conan's parents seem to have been amazingly accomplished and productive people who raised some great kids.  Lives well lived indeed.

Yes, and having lived through the tragic alternative of the remaining elderly spouse dying by inches in grief for the next 5 years, I am hoping that maybe in the 3 days Conan's elderly mother survived his father that it became apparent she could not be happy without him, and that her life now seemed complete.

Yes. I can imagine it.  My great grandparents went weeks apart. And, I expect to see it with my parents with a 66 year marriage.

One of my great aunts died the night of her husband’s funeral. Both had been in hospice care, so not a shock. Everyone believed she held on to see her children, grands and great-grands one last time before joining her husband of 70 years.

My paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather each outlived their spouse by at least 10 years. It’s difficult on the family for both to die so close together, but a blessing for the couple (assuming they were truly devoted and in love). My grandparents’ lives went on, but they were never the same and never truly happy.

I don't wish that my dad had died within a few weeks of my mom, who died 4 years ago this coming January, but my dad has been so miserable.  Between missing her dearly and some physical problems, he's practically given up.  He's even implied on a couple of occasions that he's ready.

I feel for you and your poor father.  My mother died at 53 and will be gone 30 years next year.  The first few years my step dad was miserable .  He even bought a gun.  We had to get him in counseling.  Then he met a lovely lady on a dating site and they were together 25 years until we had to separate them to put my step dad in a long term care facility.  He’s again miserable and depressed and won’t even feed himself.  Unfortunately there was nothing we could do, tho B visits him each week.

hubby and I will be married 40 years next year, and I know I wouldn’t survive w/o him.

My great-grandfather outlived majority of his family his wife and two daughters, his parents, his siblings and a great-grandson. As much as he loved the rest of us still here with him. He really wanted to be with them. I really get it.

I'm only in my forties and majority of my family has passed away. We just lost an aunt last month. It's really hard year around but especially the holidays remember Thanksgivings and Christmases tables full of families. Now it's just my dad, my brother, my sister-in-law, and nephew most Christmas. I have an aunt left and uncle but their in ill health to see and a few cousins. The excitement of the holidays is gone. My dad and I try to make holidays good for each other. But it doesn't work. Because majority of the family is gone.

Just to clarify but in no way to discount your worthwhile and totally relevant post:
“…Thomas Francis O’Brien, 95, an epidemiologist, and Ruth Reardon O’Brien, 92…” (nytimes.com/2024/12/13/arts/television/conan-obrien-parents-dead.html).

Age or length if time married isn't always the main factor when spouses or partners go through grief.

OMG, for a moment I thought I was seeing Diane Delaney!

Do you mean Dana Delany?  Because I did that at first glance, too (maybe because I just re-watched her episode of Moonlighting this weekend)!  When I realized, no, Northern Exposure I could only picture Janine Turner, as I never watched it, just knew about it through cultural osmosis.  I finally got it together and looked up Diane Delano -- I immediately recognized her from The Upshaws (Regina's boss Jan), and that she was the firearms instructor in the "Justice" episode of Cold Case and appeared in an episode of Mom (among other things, of course; these are just my associations).
