I don’t really understand how the new setup works, but I think Jade Carey is going to get the floor/vault specialist spot that MyKayla would be in the running for. I don’t see her making it as one of the four for the team event with how stacked the US is with all-arounders.

The US can earn a 6th spot via the AA World Cup or continental championships which I believe will be PanAm’s. If they had gone this path both spots would have been chosen by the selection committee. If Jade wins a spot but gets injured it goes to the next eligible person not a US gymnast. If Skinner can be one of the top AA girls she has a shot for team and the 2nd individual spot. The test will be how fast she can get her bars/beam back to elite as she’s kept up her floor/vault skills.

Can the people from the team also qualify for event finals? Is there still a two per country rule for ef?

Ohio State team doctor sexually abused 177 students, investigation finds

Quote

Coaches and athletic administrators at Ohio State University knew for two decades that Dr. Richard Strauss was molesting male athletes but failed to sound the alarm or stop him, a long-awaited independent investigation into the scandal revealed Friday.

“Students openly discussed Strauss’ examination methods or complained about his loitering presence in the shower and locker room, including in front of coaches and other Athletics Department staff,” the 180-page report states.

“Many of the students felt that Strauss’ behavior was an ‘open secret,’ as it appeared to them that their coaches, trainers and other team physicians were fully aware of Strauss’ activities, and yet few seemed inclined to do anything to stop it.”

...

Of the 177 victims, 153 were student athletes or students affiliated with athletic programs at Ohio State, the report states. They included 48 members of the wrestling program, 16 from gymnastics, 15 from swimming and diving, 13 from soccer, 10 from lacrosse and seven each from hockey, track and field and baseball.

A bit of clarification; Strauss abused male athletes so the gymnasts were male. He was also known to have frequented the locker room of a Columbus Catholic boys' high school where he would literally spend hours watching teen athletes shower after games.  Despite numerous complaints and the fact that his behavior was an open secret amongst the athletes, OSU didn't report him to the medical board and he was allowed to retire after more than 20 years as team physician.  He committed suicide in 2005 at age 67 as some of the accusations became public.

This story first came to light last year when one of the victims, a former OSU wrestler came forward to single out a former assistant coach on the wrestling team who is now a Congressman.  He and others claimed that they told the coach about what Strauss was doing and the coach did nothing.  The coach turned congressman insists, of course, that no one ever told him and that, being such an honest public servant, he would've gone to the authorities right away had he known.  Sure, right.

Yes, the article specifies that he abused male athletes (which is also included in the portion I quoted in my earlier post).

Like the Nassar case, people knew he was abusing students, primarily athletes, and they did nothing to stop him. They continued to give him access to more student-athletes to abuse for over 20 years. So horrible.

Anyone watch the US Classic? I really like most of the gymnasts. Simone of course, Morgan, Grace and Riley are really good. Jade's good I've been watching her in the apparentus final meets. But I just love watching Simone. She's so good and its so much fun watching a gymnast who keeps up grading her skills and nails them.

Anyone watching the Pan American games? They had the women's team gymnastics last night. Morgan, Riley and the rest of the team looked really good. I hate that they only showed Brazil, and Peru team. A couple of the grouped together but different countries. I was really hoping to see the other teams! They kept saying how awesome the Argentina team was. Well, that would have been nice to see. Same with Cuba since they kept saying they were doing well. Why is it so freaking hard for them to show the entire competition? Even if they don't want to show it their stupid two hours. Give us the option of going on demand and watching the entire thing. I wanted to see all of the teams not just three. It was great to see Peru and Brazil. They did do very well. I've seen some of Brazilian gymnasts when they popup on that Apparantus competitions. I want to see them all.

I watched the US Classic highlights, I don’t know why NBC/Olympic Channel haven’t posted the event on YouTube like they do the others, they only posted a version with no commentary which was quite boring to watch because they never gave any scores.

It’s going to interesting to see who makes the team next year. Of course Simone is in, and I imagine Morgan is a lock. Grace and Riley seem to be in good shape but I wonder if they’d like to have one more good vaulter or bar specialist.

Which network is showing it?

732 ESPNU, 734 ESPN2 it keeps going back and forth between the two channels. I only learned it was on after watching the US Classic gymnastics that I DVRed on Thursday when they mentioned the Pan American gymnastics. I DVRed the whole thing since they don't seem to let you record just specific games which is fine I'm having fun watching the beach volleyball.

I watched the US Classic. Simone is just in a league of her own. I do want to see her complete her floor routine entirely in bounds, though.

Does anyone know why Simone asked to be taken out of the running for the Pan Am games?

I don't know. I tried to find out online if there was a reason she didn't go but couldn't find anything.

She really is amazing. And she'd won. Plus she wouldn't have been the only one to be out of bounds in the floor routine. That one gymnast landed way out. But yes I'd like her to see her stay in bounds. Its really the only thing she does wrong. Although with all her skills it doesn't matter.

But they usually do have a specialist. Those four do seem to be a lock. I hope so but a lot can happen between now and then.

Simone looked so unhappy even before her floor set. I'm worried about her. And I'm not at all someone who polices these girls' faces or thinks they need to smile all the time (Nastia, for example, was naturally quite serious during competition). But Simone always seems so sunny out there. I hope she's doing okay--she looked much happier after her beam.

Morgan also looked devastated after her floor. Stay strong, you beautiful gymnasts! We all love you!

I think Simone just had a lot on her mind with two new things planned.  Then she was really mad about her mess up on floor.  But her interview at the end of that night was great. She is just really motivated and is ready for night two to get the floor routine down.

I’m glad Night 2 was better, because I was worried about everyone after Night 1!

Is it just me, or have leotards gotten uglier and uglier?

The side by side comparison of MyKayla Skinner and Simone seemed really mean-spirited, even if the commentators tried to act like it wasn’t! And I say that as someone who really dislikes MyKayla.

I had no idea Ragan Smith retired from elite. She had bad luck. I hope she does well in the NCAA.

They are starting to look like skating costumes.

I didn’t watch the entire event. What did the commentators say?

And yes, Simone is amazing. Her dismount from the beam: what kind of physics and strength were required for her to launch herself into the air and essentially do 4 flips before gravity made her hit the ground? She had a few wobbles in the routine itself, but she absolutely nailed that dismount and landing.

Yes, they were quite ugly. It was actually distracting.

I actually thought the leotards the Gage(?) gymnasts wore night two were borderline creepy on young girls, with the flesh colored section to give the illusion that they were wearing a plummeting neckline. Why was that necessary?

Its just so much fun watching Simone. Another awesome skill! It was so cool. Its so much fun watching someone who can do all the hard stuff, keeps coming up with harder stuff and can actually do it. Land them all. She also managed to finally stay in bounds in the floor routine! She's just so fast, so strong and has so much speed.

I really hate that they cut it down to four gymnasts for the Olympic teams. That just seems so risky. I know they have alternates but still seems way too few. I still really like Morgan, Riley and Grace.  But I really like the other girls too.

Is anyone else watching rhythmic gymnastics on the Olympic Channel?  The Israeli athlete, Nicol Zelikmann (sp?) is wearing a leotard with a most unfortunately placed piece of dark fringe(?).  I cannot believe she was allowed to wear it.  What was she (her parents, coach, team officials, etc.) thinking?

From her social media it seems like they were in contact but not close. But still, Simone's had to deal with a lot. I'm so tired of articles praising her "bubbly" personality. From what she's said about her childhood and also what happened with Larry Nassar it's clear that between learning triple doubles this young lady has had a lot to unpack.

I fully agree with this team (and figure that Skinner is the likely alternate). Morgan seems like a nice person but I've gotten a bit tired of the narrative around her that she "peaks when she needs to." She was given a lot of benefit of the doubt the last 2 years, and luckily for her it worked out, but now that the competition is stiffer, it's just not good enough to bank on reputation and not have a single consistent competition over the whole summer (IIRC). I think sitting out Worlds will be good for her to get some rest for next year, especially since she'll have to peak earlier to really aim for the Olympics.

I feel bad for Morgan but it's not as though she hasn't already had an incredible Worlds career. (And hopefully will again.) And I am thrilled for Mykayla. She looked GREAT at camp. Kind of hoping she is on the team proper and Jade is the alternate--I love them both but I am still pissed that Mykayla was left off the Rio team. I love her big tricks. Happy with the rest of the team--I guess it's easier that Riley was sick because I would love for her to be there as well.

I like the ones named. Congrats to Simone, Jade, Kara, Sunisa, Grace and Mykayla! They'll all do a great job. I'm a little sad for Morgan but not really surprised. I've been worried about her since she didn't make it to the individual all around of the Pan American Games and after her fall at U.S. National Championship it was pretty obvious she wouldn't make it to the worlds. Same for Leanne Wong. I like both of them a lot. I wondered if Jade Carey had been picked when she wasn't at the last two FIG Gymnastic World Challenge Cup Apparatus Finals after being at the first two.

The World Challenge Cup Apparatus Finals are not part of the Apparatus World Cup Series that Jade is participating in (yes, I know, it's not confusing at all). I don't think there was ever a plan to send US gymnasts to these recent events.

Oh, your right. I keep getting the two confused. They really should have more of a different name. Jade was kicking ass at those competitions.
