S04.E01: Be My Baby

Okay, I'm sorry, but I have to start with my first complaint...  Mel said it's been 5 weeks since the end of last season.  Charmaine wasn't showing at all, and now - just 5 weeks later - she looks like she's 8 months pregnant.

The pacing/timing on this show is the absolute worst.

The timeline on this show moves waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too slow, that's my biggest gripe about it.

If you think about it, Mel and Jack have only been together for a matter of a few months and they're ready to settle down. I still hate the plot of Mel getting IVF with her and Mark's fertilized egg(s) immediately after her and Jack broke up. They were only apart for a matter of days if not a week. It might have worked better if time on this show actually moved, but since one year hasn't even passed since season one, it all comes off as ridiculous.

Needless to say, it's going to be annoying if Mel's baby isn't Jack's - for multiple reasons, but chief among them would be that her IVF took on the first try, very quickly, and without her having to take hormone injections. I already hate that Jack is stuck tied to Charmaine because she's having twins, can't Mel and Jack get a win without extra convoluted dRaMa on top? No? Okay...

It just doesn't even make ANY sense, whatsoever.  Of course the IVF, but any of it.  TPTB aren't even trying.

Jack is so controlling. He is angry chopping wood because Mel doesn’t want to see a specialist in LA?  I don’t remember exactly where this is supposed to be set. My google says only California, but it would have to be Northern California based on the setting. So, the dr wouldn’t even be close by. So, what good is it?  Also, Mel had a point- you can have the best specialists and do everything “right” and still lose a baby. I get being scared, but I’m so sick of Jack getting mad at everything.

The Paige storyline continues to be so boring and stupid and she’s not even on the show anymore.

The new Dr flirting with Mel, because of COURSE he is.  What’s worse is Mel didn’t recognize it as flirting and didn’t shut it down. Just so there can be drama later.

First time I ever actually felt sorry for Hope.

Also agree that the timeline for this show is bonkers. Why not have at least a year pass in-between seasons?  This much drama doesn’t happen to a normal person and if it did they’d all be on serious meds. Let the storyline breathe a little bit!  I get this is based on a book(s), but STILL!

Nothing has changed. Hope is still annoying and nobody can keep a secret for more than 10 minutes.

Of course it’s Jack’s. He’s perfect*. His sperm muscled it’s way in and kicked out Mark’s embryo.

*Perfect except for the fact he’s overbearing and a control freak.

Oh Virgin River.  You're still bonkers but I love you.

The crazy thing about this season is, I've almost come to terms with the timeline.  Charmaine goes from not showing at all to at least six months along practically overnight?  Ok, whatever.  But now what's starting to annoy me is Calvin and the drug people.  I feel like that subplot probably made more sense in the books, which I'm guessing were written pre-legalization of marijuana.  As it stands, it just doesn't make sense at all that there would be this massive underground pot growing operation that has spies and corrupt police officers scattered around.  You don't need to do that anymore.  In the real world, California has Mom and Pop Pot Shops everywhere.

I've yet to understand why anyone sane would want to marry either Jack or Mel.

Last season, Mel was in LA for exactly two days during Joeys divorce hearing.  Somehow her fertility doctor gave her an appointment, consult  and an IVF procedure all in an afternoon.  With no pre approval needed from anyone.
I assume we are going to get told on her ultrasound that both embryos took and a third one also shows up too.
Jack didn’t buy any  of that prenatal stuff for Charmaine.  He wants to micromanage  the pregnancy of a medical professional who has what seems to be a very capable obstetrician.

Do we know if Jack is actually the father of Charmaine's unborn twin boys? Was there paternity testing done?

Now, Jack is in the same boat with Mel, not knowing if her pregnancy a result of the IVF or from Jack. Is this a soap opera or what?

Pretty Little Liars prepared me for this.

So Doc had a girlfriend that didn't tell him she had a kid, and now he's got a grandkid? Huh? I'm kind of surprised they didn't go the G.I. Baby route as Doc is the age of someone that could have served in Vietnam. Why do I feel like Hope is going to be an insufferable bitch when she finds out about this?

I bit the bullet and decided to watch. Last season was so ridiculous and I hate watched most of it, but I was ok with this first episode. I thought Jack was just trying to do anything he could think to help because there’s literally nothing he can do. I interpreted it as fear.

Glad to see Preacher’s doing well, and now he has some competition for hottest resident! Gotta give the viewers what they want, and I guess the doctor is for the people who like intellectuals as opposed to the rugged outdoor types.

Too much Hope and Charmaine. They could be exclusively in the opening credits and it would be too much Hope and Charmaine.

To refresh you--all I notice that has changed in first episode is Lizzie has now gone from trollop to helping the less fortunate in less than a week (in the show's timeline).

I did remember her as being a self indulgent brat.

But, sadly, I have no idea how the one guy ended up in prison and who the guy is that has a beard and hangs around the bar.  And I don't know where the kid went, either.  Kidnapped?

Maybe I didn't watch the whole third season?

It's a soap opera with beautiful scenery and LOTS of kissing.

I watch as much for the scenery as anything else.  The photography is stunning!

Brady was in jail awaiting trial for allegedly trying to kill Jack. The other guy hanging out at the bar is Mike -law enforcement of some sort - DEA maybe?  Both Brady and Mike served with Jack and Preacher in Iraq.
Christopher was kidnapped by his paternal Uncle  Vince. His mother is on the run after his father’s accidental death in her house.  Only a few people know he is dead though

Jack is losing his appeal for me. Instead of the rugged ex-marine of the books, we get unkempt mountain man. :(

Preacher is as handsome as ever.

Mel seems more mellow and confident. I like her this way.

Unkempt mountain man with David Cassidy hair, the worst kind of mountain man.

I'm now wondering if I finished season 3 as well, I'm only vaguely remembering some of the characters/ storylines.

I am wondering that too, Mike is acting very suspicious & trying to throw Brie off the clues.

There's something off about the way he acts.

They are not involved with marijuana anymore, they are dealing in fentanyl now.  Nick's crime boss sister mentioned they were getting a shipment of it.
