Damn, I'd love Chelsea Clinton to be the permanent host, but I know there's not a chance in hell.  She's so smart, so articulate, so well-rounded, and yet polite, sweet, and down-to-earth.

And not combative and excitable.

Exactly.  Her background and future are so far above anything on television.  It will be nice to follow (quietly) her contributions to the world.

Is Tara is serious candidate or just a regular fill in when they need an extra body at the table?  Maybe Sara is back filming in CA.

God, no. And this list looked pretty nice to begin with.

At least there's Joy Friday with Ana and Chelsea Clinton to follow as the palate cleanser after three days of her.

What’s wrong with Tara? I think she is actually pleasant

Compared to other one she was pleasant but since auditioning to replace the other one I find her a lot less pleasant.

Yep, I guessed it. Tara will be filling in for Sara.

I’m surprised Sunny didn’t think the slap was romantic. I expected her to be on Team Offended Husband.

I wondered what Whoopi’s take would be since she is so thin skinned. She was sort of rationalizing Wil’s behavior.

Sunny, Will took focus away from ALL of the winners not just Questlove.

I agree with Joy about the In Memoriam, I could barely see the deceased on the screen because they pulled too far back to showcase the singing group.

Whoopi is now becoming defensive about Will Smith.  Has this woman no moral compass?

I think they should give Lady Gaga some props for the way she handled Liza Minnelli. The polar opposite of violence.

Yeah, that was sweet.  I thought Liza was pretty quick with the quips though.  She looked a bit confused but she may have been overwhelmed by the event.  I remember back in the late 80s(?) she and Sinatra were onstage and he was a bit confused.  She dealt with the situation with the same gentle empathy and covered for him when he forgot the lyrics.  Time marches on and now she's Sinatra, so to speak.

EXCELLENT point, Joy!  If anyone should have bitch slapped anyone, it should have been Judge Jackson at the hearing last week.  But keep on apologizing for your Hollywood friends, Whoopster 🙄

He also took the focus away from his own win.

His violent behavior is the lead story. His winning the Oscar is secondary.

I have to wonder if this is out of character for Will Smith or do we just not know Will Smith at all.

Rumors for decades but I wasn't there so they'll remain rumors, for me anyway.

Whoopi sounded horrified when one of the hosts asked if they would rescind his win.  I read the academy is holding an emergency ZOOM meeting to discuss the issue.  What's to discuss, he not only broke their rules he broke the law.  Actions have consequences and he should not be allowed to run roughshod over this institution or it's the end of the Oscars.  What's next, someone pulls out a gun and shoots someone live onstage?

Sunny and Ana gave perfect responses to Will's assault on Chris.

Joy gave the comedian's point of view which was similar to Kathy Griffin's which is fear for comedians' safety.

Whoopi fell back into her celebrity apologist mode and was trying to rationalize to the audience Will's response to Chris's joke.  Sorry Whoopi, there is no excuse for his behavior.  None.

Maybe someone here knows more details - Chris Rock's previous joke about the Smiths was 2016 - has he spent the intervening 5 years making jokes at them, or was that the main thing? Because holding a grudge for 5 years about a joke that you weren't even there to hear is not normal.

I'm surprised that there wasn't more of the "but he's a comedian" comments about Chris Rock from Whoopi, instead of letting Will Smith off easy.

IMO if the joke was that hurtful, Jada should have let it show on her face (maybe even cry?) and the sentiment would be all about Chris Rock bullying her instead of Will Smith assaulting him.

Whoopi, even though she plays it down now, was cancelled back in 2004 for making a joke.  She lost the Slim-Fast endorsement and no one would touch her with the proverbial 10 foot pole.  Barbara rescued her and hired her for The View.  I think she's super defensive when it comes to celebrities who come under fire.  She always defends the indefensible no matter what they've done.  I think her personal experience has her reacting out of emotion instead of looking at the facts.  It has definitely clouded her judgement.

Whoopi has always put foot in mouth and had Ms. Walters defend and give her a 2nd chance.  So maybe she's more forgiving because of that past experience.  But agree she goes for the emotion in this situation.

Lastly, whatever happened to hashing things out in private?  His win is now overshadowed by this.

I agreed with Sunny on Smith, how was he not escorted out by security after that? He's always been stuck on himself to me though (sort of like Justin Timberlake), so I'm not surprised, but especially since he did it to someone I really like on top of it all like Chris Rock... Chris Rock could've turned around and taken the piss out of him if he'd wanted to, have him brought up on charges, filed a lawsuit to get money out of him, etc. But Chris Rock is a better person by far.

And what's worse, that asshat overshadowed how good the hosts were! Even Regina Hall was pretty funny. Loved the Golden Globes, Weinstein, and Kardashian jokes in particular.

In reference to Will's temper in public - I don't know if this is off-topic but he once pushed and slapped a Ukranian reporter (not a good look now) who I believe, tried to kiss him on the lips after he gave him a hug.  For a guy who plays in a lot of comedies he sure doesn't seem to have a sense of humor.  Most comedians would diffuse the situation with a joke and walk away.

Apologies if it's off-topic.

And I thought his speech was awful.  No Will love does not make  you do crazy things.  Love didn't make you do that.  Your inability to control your anger did.  You should probably see someone about that.

I read somewhere that is a classic line from an abuser to his victim ie spouse, partner, etc.  I think he gave himself away in his speech even though he thought he was slick flipping the situation by making himself the great protector of his family.

Yeah, I would have been embarrassed. He's just lucky it was Chris Rock and not Ricky Gervais who I think hosted the Oscars some years ago. Gervais would've kept it going and going (both onstage and post-show), whereas Chris Rock has better things to do than get wrapped up with a manchild.

I fully agree that he and his wife are quite into themselves and then share pretty much everything with the world.  Their kids are a bit pretentious as well (weren't  they famously allowed to "educate" themselves from around 11 or 12?).  There was no excuse for any of that.  Meaner things have been said by comics hosting awards shows with no reactions.  He could have just yelled something from his seat, which would still have been an overreaction but less.  I was puzzled by the fact that he got a standing ovation for his win--really?  Just rewarding him for his behavior.  I thought he might apologize (for real) in his speech but he really didn't do that--sounded more like excuses than an apology.   I did read today that the LA Police Dept stated that Chris Rock did not want to file a complaint but that he was still able to do so if he changed his mind.  That was clear assault.  On another Will Smith note, I did like the opening comment by one of the hosts about the movie King Richard--that of course a movie made about the Williams sisters would be about the man/dad and not about the women.

Oh I'm sure Chris Rock will be talking about this in the right environment.  His comedy shows.

IMO it is something an abuser would say.  Much along the lines of "why did you make me do that" to the person you just hit.  I have yet to hear Will say he was sorry for what he did. He apologized to the Academy but didn't say he was sorry for committing an assault on Chris Rock.   His speech was all about justifying his abhorrent behavior.

Has anyone made this point yet?  Will LAUGHED at the joke--an innocent joke.  I assume he received A LOOK or AN ORDER--immediately from The One Who MUST Be Obeyed and he strode up the aisle to make one of the biggest mistakes of his career.

Starring opposite his son, Jaden, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the movie was panned by critics and audiences. Smith even told Esquire that "After Earth," the idea of which he conceived himself, was the "most painful failure" of his career, "After Earth" 2013.

Immediately after Chris Rock made the joke, they showed Jada rolling her eyes and Will chuckling.   I thought they eye roll was sufficient for the audience to know the joke was in poor taste.   The rest was unnecessary.

Ladies and Gentlemen, The Academy would take back the statuette under these circumstances (among others):

  • If the victim dies
  • If the perpetrator was NOT a major player...or
  • If the award was for Documentary and not Lead Actor

Yeah they aren't taking back Will Smith's Oscar.  They gave Roman Polanski an Oscar after he was accused of rape.

Even if this is true that still doesn't mean Jada is in any way shape or form responsible for her husband's idiotic behavior.  I really don't believe for one minute she was sitting in the audience hoping her husband was about to win a freaking academy award and then said "go  get him" to Will Smith when she was insulted.

According to the NY Times, the Academy has "officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our bylaws, standards of conduct and California law.”  Lord I hope Whoopi doesn't get a vote!

Especially after she called a boycott for Will not having a nomination a few years back.   I'm wondering if she is cool with him doing that on a live award telecast?

I know everyone's attention was on the slap heard round the world, but was I the only one who noticed the situation with Whoopi's shirt? I think it said Country? but the way the ends couldnt be seen because they crossed around her arms made it look like a promise to see us next tuesday. It was also wildy unflattering.

Well, Will laughed initially; camera panned to Jada, who rolled her eyes; next thing I saw, Will going up to the stage and hitting Chris.

She didn't try to stop him from going up there. Didn't indicate for him to not say anything when Will dropped that F-bomb about Chris not speaking Jada's name from his "fucking mouth."

ABC should have just cut the feed and gone to commercial. But then they got those "SPARKS!"

Of course all winners matter 🙂,   But Chris Rock was presenting Best Documentary which Questlove won.   I'm pretty sure that's what Sunny was referring to.  Questlove gave an emotional acceptance speech, but I can't help but wonder if what had just happened added to his emotion.
