Bad thing: he also appears to be leading Jamie around on some sort of leash  ;-I

I'm guessing this is either after he escapes to go looking for the "treasure" or when he and John ride out to talk with the dying man who tells them of the "treasure." Interesting that Jamie appears to be in chains, so I suspect it is the latter.

Didn't he remove the chains before they left the prison? It looks like a rope to me so my guess is it's when he turns himself in after running away.  Assuming, of course, that these events remain unaltered.

Yes, there's a rope, but if you look at his wrists, there's also cuffs connected with chains. You're probably right that they did remove the chains before they left the prison, but, for some reason, I remembered it happening after they returned.

I remember that Jamie didn't have the chains when he served as translator for Lord John. I recall there was a scene in tavern where he and LJG were chatting and then John noticed black bruises left by the iron on Jamie's wrists, Jamie noticed that he had noticed and pfff...all their camaraderie was gone.

A fan posted a gif from a scene featuring the Dunsanys, Jamie and Ellesmere. All the credits for Manders 1984.

https://abreathofsnowandashes.tumblr.com/image/162984793313

Apparently they removed Jamie's dashing  jump to retrieve baby William from Ellesmere's hands after he just got shot. When you watch carefully, you can see that Ellesmere is falling to the floor while still holding the baby in one hand and the infant hits the floor right next to him while Jamie stands there among powder smoke. Now....huh....I don't know but wouldn't that just kill poor wee William?

Why should it?  People drop babies all the time - hell, I dropped my little niece on her head and she was fine (I was seven.)  That baby appears to be well-swaddled so there's no reason to think that the fall would result in instant baby-death.  Also, it looks kind of like the old man's body broke the baby's fall.

I'm a bit more concerned that they have this scene in what appears to be an open  hall way . Too many servants as potential witnesses instead of just Jamie, the Dunsanys and the other groom who was immediately pensioned off to Ireland .

Yeah I slipped on the stairs when my son was a week old and he fell down the steps banging his head.  He was fine.  Babies are more durable then people think.

- interesting that Jamie gets arrested in Lallybroch courtyard. I wonder if they removed his self-sacrifice alltogether or that was his plan - if so, I would think that getting arrested while visiting his family would compromise Janny&Ian and the rest of the Murrays.

I don't recall how they set up Jamie's arrest after Fergus was hurt, but maybe -- in the TV version -- they're going to have Jenny pretend to give him up to the authorities, which will put the Murray's in good stead with the English and keep Lallybroch in their hands. Just the look on Jenny's face suggests how she really feels about seeing Jamie being taken.

I sure hope you are right because I was really ticked off when I watched that trailer and saw that scene.   It makes sense that Jenny would pretend to give him up as it keeps his whole recapture simpler.

Random trailer- related thoughts:

- interesting that Jamie gets arrested in Lallybroch courtyard. I wonder if they removed his self-sacrifice alltogether or that was his plan - if so, I would think that getting arrested while visiting his family would compromise Janny&Ian and the rest of the Murrays.

- can't judge LJG after one spoken line but I hope that the show will do justice to his intelligence and his sassy nature, and that DB have a nice chemistry with SH. Because that's very important IMO

- Geneva is beautiful

- Caitriona Balfe's acting rocks

- is that Claire making love with Frank in the front of fireplace?

- the last 10 seconds is pure magic

- but the trailer music is an overkill.  Something by Bear McCreary instead would be better IMO

Can you explain where we saw Geneva in the trailer?  I didn't notice her and I would like to get a look!

My thinking was that they probably want to save all the Jamie stuff for the fan excitement factor, so they "plotted" the teaser to tell this story this way. No one I know is going to *squee* over Frank, no matter how much they like him or appreciate Menzies' acting, but they can get a lot of hype later if they make us wait for the iconic Jamie scenes. I'm sure once we have all the episodes that the percentage will be much more in Jamie's favor. Plus of course, everything we see here is probably packed into the beginning of the season and the promo just leads up to the print shop. (OMG!) Once Claire gets back to Jamie I assume we'll cut way down on any Frank stuff.

I agree with everyone else's ideas. I think it's probably the way they've arranged for Jamie to give himself up and let Jenny and Ian get the money.

I thought the people making out in front of the fire were Breanna and Roger, but it was so fast I wasn't sure.

It's super-quick, but LJG seems perfect to me. Compassionate, thoughtful, considerate, with a strong presence. His eyes - whew.

Oh - of course that was Geneva. I thought it was Mary, for some reason.

Agreed. It's cherry-picking, to whet our appetite. I bet it's a 2:1 Jamie:Claire the first several episodes. Jamie's story is so much more fleshed out than Claire.

Since this is probably all we get of Tobias, I hope we find out how much Frank knows. That shot of him looking at the clock made me wonder if that's him knowing, with his heart condition, he's living on borrowed time. Of course, it could be the obvious reference to time-travel. Still, I'd really like to see what he's learned (records in the past, Brianna's family tree, etc), just like how we're going to actually watch Culloden happen, instead of hearing about it piecemeal over 6 books.

During the second half of the trailer, when you see Jamie looking like he's naked from the waist up - if not all the way - and the next snippet has him standing in front of a young dark-haired woman. They both look like they may be without clothes. I'm assuming that's Geneva.

I ended up watching the trailer the first time with 2 co-workers and they both questioned the capture scene too. Like others said, I figured Jamie and Jenny set it up so she would "turn him in" and get the reward money/ get on England's good side. It looked like Jamie was just making a big show for the soldiers of being Hello! I am home! I haven't been living in a cave near by or anything not at all! So same idea as the book, but slightly different execution.

They also grumbled a bit about all the Frank, but I said it's not like they'd show us anything with Claire and Jamie. I was surprised we even got her walking up the print shop! Teases! :) I wish we could watch it now.

Here is a screencap of Geneva:

http://www.outlandertvnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Screen-Shot-2017-07-18-at-7.05.09-PM-768x409.png

Can't get over the gazillion of emotions playing out on Caitriona's Balfe face: tearful joy with baby Brianna, tentative hope with Frank at the beginning, anger and bitterness later, but then a hint of warm smile for him as well over a family breakfast, proud with adult Bree - all during barely 2 minutes. But most of all: that moment of terror when she wakes up in the hospital and Brianna is not with her (such a sad throwback to "Where is my baby?" scene in "Faith") and finally, lips trembling when she is approaching Alexander Malcolm's printshop (gorgeous art design BTW I also love that Edinburgh seems to have something of Harry Potter's Diagon Alley feel to it, only more dirty and gritty ). WOW she does really have book Claire's "glass face".

Thank you Grashka!  Those trailers go by so fast.  Great trailer.

Here are the "character portraits" of the leading characters who will be in season 3.

http://www.outlandertvnews.com/2017/07/new-outlander-season-three-character-portraits/

Of the three, Sam doesn't look like he's in his 40s. He looks like he's in his 30s. I bet the makeup folks were erring on the younger side. Easier to age him up as the seasons (hopefully) continue.

This is in the magazine they're passing out at Comic Con. Look at Jamie in the photo on the right.

I had to zoom in - thankfully that is not all hair, like it looked initially. That's just weird lighting in/on the photo.

Scrolling through those I didn't see the character names at first so when I got to the young man with the blue eyes that I didn't recognize who looks a lot like Sam I thought "hey, did they already cast adult William?" LOL. I expected Fergus to be a bit darker, I guess. They all look great in any case.

They're definitely changing up the story line. I don't think it was Jamie who picked Fergus up after he was hurt and took him to Lallybroch but the soldiers, themselves, who then tried to pay off "his family."

Also, his hair should be hidden under his hat, right?

Link to comment

Should we assume from those portraits that they've aged up Marsali to avoid the squickiness of 30-year-old Fergus running way with a 15 or 16-year-old girl? Because she looks noticeably older than Brianna there.

Sam's quote in the accompanying text mentions that "He’s not himself for maybe six episodes."   I can't remember how many episodes this season is supposed to have but wouldn't that put the reunion somewhere around the halfway point, assuming that's what he means?

Blonde Ian is giving me pause too for the same reason.  What's funny is that the guy they've cast as adult Fergus looks like he could be related to Jamie, and at least the coloring would be in the ballpark.  The shape of his face and Sam's are very similar.

I will reserve my judgement of Young Ian until I see him on the screen but based on the portrait he seems completly off the mark to me. He is supposed to be dark-haired, dark-eyed and swarthy, his look combined with tatoos in later books make other people mistake him for Native American. Cannot imagine this young man to blend into a tribe.

Funny you say that, because I must have missed that description completely in the book.  I always thought Ian was blond, and I always wondered how he fit in with the Native Americans as a blond.  Thanks for sharing!

I don't mind such changes, I can see how Jamie carrying bloodied and screaming Fergus (instead of the Red Coats doing so) would make for a gut-wrenching on-screen moment. The same about Jenny being the one to "sell" Jamie to English soldiers instead of one of their tennants. The end result is the same but on the screen we also get a powerful image of "betrayed" brother and sister whose heart is breaking, surrounded by armed British soldiers. Altough I have to admit that this particular change gives me a pause - I can see the benefits for the Murrays, getting on the British good side by "betraying" their hiding Jacobite relative. But wouldn't it also put a huge stigma on Jenny in the eyes of other Highlanders - a sister who sold her own brother to the enemy? Because how many people could have been on the joke?

Perhaps the servants will be in on it too and spread the word to their tenants? I'm not too worried about Jamie carrying Fergus instead of the Red Coats, but I do find it interesting Fergus is so young. In the book, he must be about 17 years old, right? He was 10 in France, less than a year in Scotland before Culloden, and Jamie lived in the cave for seven years...wasn't it Fergus getting his arm cut off what prompted Jamie to turn himself in?

Anyway, I think it'll work out okay in the end, just got me to thinking.

Yeah, I'm not feeling him either, but I haven't seen him "act" yet, so it might work out fine. They've done a fantastic job with casting up until now. I had the same reservation with Lord John at first, too, but after seeing the promo photos--and watching the actor in another role--I think it's going to be fine.

I have to say though, I didn't realize how much Caesar and Sam resembled each other. Are we sure they aren't brothers? CRAZY!! ;)

They have to cut things somewhere and it doesn't really matter much how Fergus gets home.  And if he's rushing to get Fergus somewhere because Fergus' freaking hand was cut off, I doubt he's giving much though to his hairdo.

I'm with you. I always thought that young Ian had his father's lighter coloring - I never pictured him dark.

It's 13 episodes.

Yeah, it seems like the reunion is in episode 6 or 7. People were making that guess based on some filming spoilers and other things the cast has said. At one point Cait said they filmed episode 8 early to accommodate filming schedules of some cast (and it seemed like episode 8 was when they're back in LallyBroch.) and that when they filming episodes 6 and 7, she and Sam would be together for the rest of the season filming from that point.

Ouch... They are showing the first episode of season 3 in San Diego.

Yeah, I'm not "feeling" that decision. Why water down the premiere with an episode that is entirely spoiled? Oh well.

I'll just flat-out say it pisses me off. SDCC has always annoyed me a bit. It's haves vs have-nots.

This world needs more socialism, and that includes the entertainment industry.

I'm angrier at STARZ that demands all this secrecy and then spills a whole episode which they know will be spoiled. What's the point of all the -- "We can't say this; can we say this?" -- if you're just going to show the damn episode. Ugh!

I'll be tip-toeing carefully around the internet to avoid spoilers from the first episode but I don't mind that they showed it at SDCC.  They did the same thing for the first-ever episode and it was a good way to generate buzz for the new show.  The gap between season 2 and season 3 was longer than usual due to their moving it from April to September so creating buzz to bridge that gap by having an sneak peek viewing of the first episode in July seems like a reasonable decision.  I'm sure the fans in the audience fairly lost their minds so I'm happy for them.  But I'll be treading carefully for a few days.  Diana has invited people to discuss the ep under a posting on her Facebook page so if you don't want to know anything about the ep, steer clear of that.

I read a glowing review of  episode 1 on tublr from a fan who saw it in San Diego and described it as probably the best episode of "Outlander" to date (she also seemed pretty critical of season 2). The episode is titled "Battle joined". The review was almost spoiler-free with the exception of indicating the fate of certain character.

She indicated that the episode doesn't show what happened with Murtagh, it doesn't show his death. Which could mean they are either saving it for future flashback, or that Murtagh survives in the show version of this story, maybe to be found by Jamie&Claire later in colonies?

Some folks have speculated that Murtagh will serve the Duncan Innes role in the colonies.  And how interesting would it be to see him married to Ellen's sister?

There's supposed to be a TCA (television critics assn.) panel today, although I don't know if we'll get a chance to see it.

The TCA 2017 Summer Press Tour OUTLANDER panel is on Friday, July 28, 2017. TV Tango will live tweet at approximately 3:35-4pm PT (on day of panel check @tvtango Twitter for start time updates)

Tweet I just saw:

#TCA17 #Outlander @RonDMoore - it takes 5 episodes for Claire and Jaime to reunite in season 3

That's fewer than people were speculating - most folks thought it would be around the 6th or 7th.  It kind of makes me worry that they won't spend enough time on Jamie's journey.

Moore means episode 6...the TVLine article says RDM explains that Jamie has 5 parts to his 20 years, and they're giving Claire's story and equally divided 5 parts. So they're reunited in episode 6.  And I suspect episode 6 addresses how Roger and Bree find when/where Jamie is and develop their relationship.

This is a buzzkill. From EW, about TCA:

Quote

But one reporter wanted to know whether the series — which is about to kick off its third season — plans to go for any many seasons as there are Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon. There have been eight novels, and Gabaldon is currently working on the ninth, titled “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.”

Moore seemed to suggest they may not make it that far. “I can’t imagine a scenario where we catch up to Diana [and her books],” he told reporters Friday. “She will tell us the end of the story.”

Anyone know if there's the typical 6 season contract?
