Yeah, that "Picking up where my mom left off" line was...weird. That, and I think it's also the fact that it fits with the running joke of her selling stuff to stick up one's nether regions, like those weird egg things :p.

Plus, while I too am all for people using vibrators, that seems an awful lot of money to plop down for one.

Ten grand for Jason Momoa duct-taped to a cot in a sex dungeon/shipping container sounds like a steal to me, though.

The show will be dark until further notice as Stephen is apparently going through a recurrence of Covid.

1) didn't know a recurrence so quickly was a "thing"

and

2) FU COVID! Colbert was so, so careful for so long and he moved forward with the CDC guidance. He was the person that kept me going in my sea of isolation through the worst of it. He's vaxxed and boosted. Just move TF along.

I guess that cold wasn't actually a cold.

Sigh.

Recurrances are a thing, unfortunately. There's been a problem with people to took Paxlovid having rebound infections soon after going off it.

Also, the new variant is infecting people who have already had another variant, even recently.

I also wonder if he's got long covid. They say he's experiencing symptoms. They didn't say he "tested positive". 30% of people who get covid get long covid, so it wouldn't be that surprising if he was one of them.

Maybe he just came back too soon after testing positive last month. Hindsight is always 20/20, but maybe they should have waited another week or two before coming back. It's hard to say what the right thing to do is in this situation.

According to my DVR, Mark Esper and Judd Apatow will be on tonight's episode. I personally hope Stephen's questions will make Esper squirm, because I'm sick of members of the former administration being rewarded with book deals and cushy TV gigs.

Sadly Colbert treated Esper with a light touch. No squirming. Apatow, on the other hand, gave him both barrels much to the audience's approval. Really disappointed in Colbert. I don't think it's the host's job to be antagonist with a guest, but he treated Esper with kid gloves.  I think it needlessly makes Colbert appear as something of a softball interviewer, and to what end? It's not like Esper was some exclusive "get" and it makes Colbert look like all hat no cattle in terms of talking a good game in the monologue then going all teddy bear at the desk.

I know, and I was disappointed. Like you said, Stephen as the host should be polite, but he really let Esper off the hook. 😢😣 Too bad Sunny Hostin of The View wasn't doing the interview because she would have brought the fire.

Colbert has gotten less and less interesting as an interviewer over time. I don't know what is going on but he comes across lazy and like he's not even trying.

I wonder if some of that comes from the departure of EP, Showrunner and all around wunderkind Chris Licht.  IIRC Licht's contract with CBS ended in April so I suspect he's not even in the building anymore.  Licht, BTW left "The Late Show" to take the position of president of CNN going back to his roots of being something of a news guy.

I thought Stephen's interview with Ricky Gervais was more like his old self, and that was also the first time since he had Covid that his voice sounded normal. I'm annoyed that he was told to say he had "a head cold" and then later said something jokingly about how they're now calling it allergies. Apparently his returned symptoms and positive test can happen when treated with Paxlovid.

I appreciate that they discussed the awful box routine, about which I always felt intense revulsion like Rick Gervais.
May it never return.

I think it could be that he caters to the studio audience more and more (which also explains his increasing crassness in his attempts at humor).

Aand we are back to hugging guests again. Sigh.

I appreciated the interview with Secretary Blinked, he seems like a nice guy. Most of it was a "well, that is obvious" for me, but for people who don't follow the war 24/7 I'm sure it was informative, which is great. Plus, with all the disinformation and russian trolls out there, we apparently need to keep reminding some basic facts, like NATO being a defensive alliance, because even some moderately intelligent people seem to have problems with understanding that.

Can we play that clip of that rant she gave to those idiots in the audience on a loop where everyone can see it? Please?

Here you go:

The clip of Patti LuPone's rant as shown on Colbert begins at this point:

She talks movingly about Sondheim starting at about the 5 minute mark.😢

(and clip by itself on Twitter:

I don't see any mention anywhere as to whether the woman was escorted out.

There are also videos of her ranting in 2009 about people taking pictures (cellphone?) in the theater in violation of policy.

I'm glad the show taped in time yesterday for Stephen to address the tragedy in Texas. It was a bit of a catharsis, because Stephen was as angry and fed up as I am, and everyone else is. From there he went into the most biting and caustic monologue as he's had in a while, capped off with a visit from the NZ Prime Minister. Fantastic show.

I just watched the Mike Myers episode.  And I have to give a major shout-out to the untuckit parody commercial.  I haaaaaaate those commercials so much (because the product is so stupid!!!) and Stephen captured it so perfectly.

I don't get it. I mean the shirt, not the parody commercial. The same shirt can be worn both tucked and untucked. I wear them untucked most of the time.

New Zealand's prime minister is one of my favorite politicians. She seems so cool and down to earth. I like that she mentioned that Stephen sent them an engagement gift.

He looked to be about on the verge of tears when he first mentioned the news at the start of the show. I've no doubt he'll have plenty more to say about the tragedy and the response tonight.

I adore New Zealand's Prime Minister. She's so smart and so compassionate and so thoughtful. I've long wanted to visit New Zealand as it is, and knowing people like her are in charge there just further adds to my interest in doing so. The people of that country are incredibly lucky to have her in charge.

I've been to 26 countries, and New Zealand is the only one that I said "I want to live here!".  It's a beautiful country, with many cultures - Native, European, Malaysian, Indian, Chinese -  that live together in harmony.
