One clue to Elektra's coming downfall was her mentioning that her wealth was "permanent." Tempting the fates there. I applaud her wanting to treat her family to extravagance they haven't known, and I don't fault her for being extravagant herself after having gone through some very hard times, but yeah, I hope she's saving a lot of that money.

As rough as it was to see Angel deny Papi, she is not ready to be a mom. At one point, Blanca was grooming her to take over the family but since then, she has been pretty much in "take" mode (and there are no new kids shown anyway). So if she's self-aware enough to know she's not mom material, that's a good thing, heartbreaking as it is for Papi.

That said, if they write a fantasy situation where she suddenly comes around and is the best mom ever thanks to Blanca's influence and a pep talk from her, I won't complain because Papi will get his happy family. (The marriage license thing needs to be realistic, though, with them maybe opting for a commitment ceremony after that wakeup call in being denied a license.) BTW - Papi has absolutely become a favorite.

I wonder if since this was such new ground - having trans actresses was promoted so heavily as a real breakthrough - it was perhaps necessary to have the ultra-feminine, model-like cast so that the network would even greenlight the show, exactly because it would have a better chance at gaining a foothold with a mostly cis audience. Then, writing Blanca as worrying over being clocked, and it happening to her and others, was a valid effort to portray the real-world issue. The problem is that the two elements don't mix well. They should have - maybe in the 2nd season - brought in someone in a leading role who might not pass so easily. It is a disservice... but then, it's a typical Hollywood problem. Most people don't look like the perfection of lead characters in any Hollywood shows. (Other countries do better with having more average-looking casts.) Frustrating as it may be for being somewhat unrealistic, the fact that this show was produced and they were able to tell these stories is wonderful. The fact that only Billy Porter (deserving as he is) has been recognized at awards time is telling, and even his Emmy was a big deal. There's still a long way to go, but they opened the door, and that's at least something. I hope that trans representation going forward is more than just supporting or sidekick roles, but it may be slow going. I hope I'm wrong.

When Lulu, Blanca, Angel, and Elektra were dress shopping I had to explain to someone who walked in the room why it was so ground breaking. She thought it was just 4 women excited that their friend is getting married.

When the owner was throwing them out, she was like there was no way in Hell he clocked these 4 very feminine looking women. It’s an unfortunate disconnect.

What a fabulous time that was had by all, myself included.  I am typically punctilious as it gets when it comes to realism and to continuity and congruence of characters.  Yet, Dominique has won me over utterly.  I also loved having the moment of fantasy for those folks.

One thing I was beside myself over was the callback to the mopping of the museum for ball costumes in the first season.  This time, the gowns got boosted and put to another awesome use.  Sooooooo much fun to see.

I don't understand why Blanca was not moved to very respectable living quarters and merely got the furniture makeover.  Then, the thousands and thousands being lavished on trifles and Blanca was reveling in it.  Head scratcher, that.

Of course, Elektra presaged Oprah's famous car giveaway..."You get a dress!  You get a dress!!  You get a dress!!!"  LMAO

A subtle, but profound, point was made with the depiction of the Mafia bosses as treating the trans Elektra with utmost respect while the doyen bridal shop owner was a pure pig.  I agree with all y'all who are convinced this will end very badly for Elektra.  It's absolutely tragic that she would have been swimming in cash as she expanded organically.  but, being the Mother of all Mothers, she had to have it ALL.   NOW.  The observation that she would make a helluva boss was great.  It was the ultimate respect, the lack of which in all of their lives has left gaping wounds.

Since this was a fantastical ep, I was hoping for Angel to be inspired by Lil' Papi's noble and loving decision and for her to recall the speech she had just given as to finally understanding what family truly is.  But, sadly, no.  I did, however, reeeeeealllly appreciate her citation of the struggle she was having maintaining sobriety.  I hate that she is almost certainly an addict, though.

I am completely unspoiled and I hope that Elektra somehow is able to sing such a great tune that she walks from the likely legal issues.

Finally..."One-Thousand, One-Hundred and Four plastic trophies."  Glorious line.

I'm trying to remember. Did the show ever explain how Papi came to be so enmeshed in the queer community?

I don't remember from previous seasons, but his baby mama's sister said "You have a type" when talking about Angel.  So my initial assumption was that the ex was a trans gal who had passed of AIDS and that's what Papi would find out.  So when it was revealed a bio woman who had a baby, I guessed that he had been busted cheating on the ex with a trans gal.  Someone who watches closer can correct me.

I loved "Pose" and it's just gotten... bad.  Even with mob ties, I don't think Elektra would be able to swing the charges she's racking up.  I was glad there was no Pray Tell this episode.  The constant Emmy-bait speeches and situations they put him in really burned me out on that character.  There hasn't been enough Blanca, she is the heart of the show.

That’s what I thought as well when the sister said he had a type until I realized Marisol was a cisgender gal who just looked a bit like Angel.

I mean, take this bit of dialogue from this episode:

Elektra: She [Angel] will be the first. The first from a community that has been excluded from happily ever after.

Yeah, I just did not get this at all. Elektra gives this big inspiring speech (which sounds incredibly fake and out of place and it clearly just the writers speechifying for the audience) about how amazing it is that Angel will be “the first!” Uhhhh, the first what? Do the writers expect the audience for this show to think that never before has a transwoman married a male partner in a commitment ceremony? Because it certainly would not be the first legally recognized wedding, not in 1998. Which their audience would also know. So, what is she supposed to be the first of!?

God this episode was so stupid. Just everything about this episode was bad. I kept expecting it to be someone’s dream or story they were telling. Suddenly out of nowhere Elektra is a millionaire because she’s in with the mob. (Who very nicely say she would make a good boss. Because of course they would say that. 🙄) Plus the stupidity of trying to pretend like a random guy would actually clock those women as being trans, come on now.

They didn't have Yelp back then but she could have just spread the word about how he treats trans women.

He wouldn't care.  I doubt that very many transwomen could afford that shop.

The sister doesn't know that Angel is a transwoman.  Both Angel and Marisol are/were pretty, thin Afro-Puerto Rican women with dark curly hair.

I remember him saying or implying in the first season that while he was basically straight, he sometimes had sex with men for money, so I guess he had that in common with the transwomen working the piers, although their clientele would have been different.  He also seems like the kind of guy who would have looked out for the women.

Ok - so now I have to put my two cents in.   Yeah, have to agree that this was really over the top (but fun) fantasy porn here.  Top Tier Wedding Gowns, private Spa services, new furniture (where was the badly needed paint job for Blanca's apt?), male strippers - I'm a 63 year old woman and I was drooling!  It was fun seeing our gang getting such good things but after one of Elecktra's speeches, the first thing that popped into my head was "Pride goeth before a fall".   Elektra is way full of too, too, much pride and it's gonna bite her in the ass.  Going in with mob guys, oh no, no, no.    But man!  I could not get enough of Elektra's outfits!   All straight out of 60s, 70s, 80s Vogue.   The makeup, the hair, the JEWELS.   Swoon....

Blah, to the Papi kid drama.   Seems to be a trope everywhere now - the stand-up guy with the child he didn't know about.  Since the show seems to be doing fantasy fulfillment here, I guess that Papi's ultimate fantasy was to have a "real" family, and he wouldn't be able to have that with Angel (bio kids anyway).  Bring this little boy into the mix and when Angel comes around to the idea - well Papi will get his dream.

And just a comment to the "clocked" thing:  back in the 70s, my sister and I used to go to the original Lime Lite club in Montreal.  We used to like to go during the week as it was mostly Gay people in there and we were left alone (and BTW, my sister was underage, but nobody ever checked our ID).  I used to gasp at the gorgeous women I'd see dancing away - and again, the clothes, hair, and makeup - I couldn't ever think I'd be able to compare in beauty to these visions.   Then, I'd see one of these gorgeous creatures headed to the bathrooms - and without exception, it would be to the men's room.   Clothes may make the woman, but the law was the law.    So I'd begin to look a bit closer - and I don't care how beautiful the person looked, the usual giveaways were hands, feet, and adams apples.   Maybe adams apples can be made smaller in some way, but your hands and feet are pretty much what you're stuck with.   Maybe that is how the "clocking" happens...

I know you're right about rlektra, but I'm hoping against hope that you're wrong because she is my favorite.  I can't help it!

But I know, I KNOW that pride always cometh before the fall and that wedding dress caper will probably be the tipping point.  I just hope elektra can eek out a happy ending.....while wearing something spectacular.

Me too, fingers crossed for elektra!

Interestingly, I think the mob ran a few gay clubs so I don't think it was absolutely impossible for them to work with elektra.  The deference?  Maybe not so much but the asshole at the bridal store was enough realism for me!

I'm totally in agreement about not buying the mobsters being so kind to her. Apparently all a transwoman needs to do is get another transwoman to introduce her to the mafia, and then she's in good with them.

Also, they keep emphasizing that Elektra doesn't need a man, and refuses to rely on a man ever again. And now she's put herself in a situation where she's beholden to men for money, her freedom, and her life itself. Are we not supposed to notice that?

I'm wondering if her storyline will end with her in jail, maintaining that she has no regrets because for a brief time, she got to live like the queen she knew she always was.

I didn’t know that at the time. I knew Angel was a successful model that was clocked as transgender and now openly models as transgender. I thought perhaps the sister had heard of her.

Not feeling the secret baby who is now 5 storyline.

I hope Elektra is okay in the future.

Yes, I think she's made that point in two different episodes and it just is not true.  I'm not sure what they think they are doing by having the character say that, given how obviously she relies on men to support her lifestyle.

The only thing I can think of is that Elektra thinks she's not, well, servicing, any one man, who, in turn, buys her stuff. Which is a skewed view of the ways things are. So skewed as to likely be found in the DSM-5.

I'll be bummed, but not a bit surprised, if this doesn't end well for her.

I hope she’s smart enough to make some offshore investments, open a Swiss bank account, and whatever else rich people who made their money in questionable ways do to hide their money. Otherwise she really will lose everything.

I think Elektra defines leaning on a man as having a Sugar Daddy (which she had for many years) or a rich husband. She looks at what she is doing with the mob as a business arrangement.

I hope that she is saving something or has some plans to flee the country to some offshore paradise, where her money is waiting for her (one of the guys from Enron did the same thing in the nineties).

For all her fabulousness, it often feels like she is a little naïve about money. I hope I am wrong.

It's just so hard to believe that Elektra, who came up in NYC in the '70s and '80s (and probably "serviced" many a mob guy on those piers), would even entertain the idea of going in business with the mob....especially when she knows the cops are cracking down on illegal activities now. It just bothers me every time I think about this episode because Elektra has never been a stupid woman.  She has been around long enough to KNOW that isn't going to turn out well for her.  I really hate how RM shows tend to crash and burn after starting out so freaking on point and wonderful. Ugh.

Elektra is as smart as the writers need her to be at any particular moment.

She was an idiot about Christopher Meloni's character - he told her that he'd end their arrangement if she had genital surgery, then she was completely shocked that he ended their arrangement after she had genital surgery.

And as great a TV moment as it was, it was an unbelievably reckless move to steal the costumes from that museum in the pilot. The characters should thank their lucky stars that no charges were pressed, because they could have done a lot of time for it. (And going to a men's prison would have been horrifically awful, especially back then.)

And she was furious with Blanca that Christopher was involved in saving her from murder charges, because she can't be beholden to any man - except mobsters, who would be more likely than just about anyone else to ruin (or end) her life.

If anything, Elektra's cavalier attitude towards Hot Chocolate will be her downfall.  She's not hiding her mob ties around him and just cuts him loose when she's bored.  Yes, he's not going to go to the cops because he's angry at Elektra, but he seems to be a corroborating witness if she gets indicted.

I dunno, because this is a Ryan Murphy show, I wouldn’t be surprised if Elektra still somehow came out through all of this still smelling like roses. Unless RM has a real beef with the actor playing the character, his characters never really face the consequences of their actions in a meaningful or realistic way.

This was probably Elektra's swan song, and she will only appear in the background with one more read next episode.  So Elektra lives on rich from her phone sex business and mob money.

Agreed, it's just a terrible situation. The one person who's at fault is the one we never met - Marisol. Keeping a child's existence a secret from the father is bad enough (outside of cases of abuse). But when the mother is a drug addict with an extremely limited support network, deliberately keeping the father out of the picture is just unconscionable.

I know. Why did no one tell Papi this boy existed? Especially since Marisol had a drug problem and they knew Papi wasn’t into that stuff?

The only thing I can think of is that Jimena only recently got clean herself and that’s why she hadn’t mentioned it until her sister died.

No I just think Angel and Marisol looked a lot a like- from the photo we saw of Marisol I would I agree. She and Angel easily looked like cousins, similar face shapes and Marisol was probably slim and small busted as well.

I was more shocked that she had not saved a dime from her decade of being supported by a generous sugar daddy. You never know when the guy will cut off his support and you should always put a little money aside for a rainy day.

The extreme wealth due to drug money is a turn off for me.  And, the meanness that went along with it….just a big let down.  I’d rather Elektra got the money by winning the lottery.  It’s difficult for me to root for a person who uses others and brags on it.  Don’t be cruel just because you can.  But, I did enjoy the male strippers!  Lol

The bridal gown shop scene took me back to Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.  There are plenty of dresses in NYC.  Don’t create enemies or call attention to yourself……if you have things to hide.

Does Angel have a career, job or something to do all day?

I loved the blue on blue outfit the real estate agent was wearing.

If any character was going to glorify consumerism and excess, it was Elektra, so it was easier to shake off the icky feelings of empowerment through consumption and having servants (though not entirely). Working with the mob was an interesting angle, though I have no idea how you franchise a phone-sex business. It's nice to see Lulu and Ricky back in the fold but I think I'd be losing track of the side characters even without the two month break. Lulu looked so good I was surprised when Elektra brought up rehab. I thought she'd just gotten clean offscreen and the show was going to ignore it.

Loved the colorblock sweater they put Bianca in as her furniture was being moved. Why is Elektra buying Blanca new furniture anyway? Wasn't she going to move in with Christopher once all her kids were gone? Also, the new furniture highlighted how Blanca's apartment really needs a fresh coat of paint and better lighting. That's why everything looks terrible.

Elektra looked incredible with her fur and that gold necklace in her office. Now that outfit looked expensive. Small wedding vs. big wedding felt like a weird artificial conflict to just throw into the episode. The show is about chosen family supporting each other and I would think Esteban would want Angel to have a dream wedding. I do think they went a little over the top with the Plaza and the doves but letting Angel dream bigger than City Hall wasn't inherently bad. It felt like another one of those times where they wanted to write that dialogue for Elektra and Blanca and then had to work backwards to justify it. Angel's freak out about Beto at the end of the episode was much more natural. It was a real shock and something she'd need time to adjust to.

I'm glad they quickly backed off of 80's/90's style dresses to stuff that's more modern. (Though even the first one didn't look that old fashioned.)

Dominique looked INCREDIBLE in every wedding dress they put her in. You can tell she has actual modeling experience. The set down of the wedding dress shop owner was fun but... a little corny. Especially with Dominic also quitting his job at the end. But Elektra calling her mafia friends to get the dress and get revenge was a nice way to tie it all up that felt much more satisfying. Everyone getting a wedding dress reverted back to being silly again (because yeah, it did make sense for the mafia to make a profit unloading them).

The fact that so much of Jimena's dialogue was absolving Esteban was weird. It didn't sound like what Marisol's sister would have said, especially after JUST learning that her sister had lied about him cheating.

I'm sure it was partially covid and also not wanting to pay for extras but after their wedding dress experience, it kind of made sense for Elektra to buy out the spa so they could have it to themselves.

There’s happy endings and then there’s...whatever this is. I don’t like it because it conflates a satisfying conclusion and character happiness with ridiculous wealth and success. It’s still not a great message if you can only be happy if you somehow magically achieve the unattainable.

I think it's partially a show/tone problem as you described but I do really think it comes down to the writers. There are some people who achieve success and see the world through the lens of materialism and consumption. Luxury and access and ease. And then they go to therapy and meditate and pay lip service to what's "really important" from their huge mansions.

Quote

I was really hoping that there might be some women in that huge bridal shower scene who couldn't easy pass in real life - but if there were, I didn't see them.

True. There were so many women in that scene they didn't need to justify them all as series regulars.

Quote

Raising a kid is real work, and also means you are not the center of attention anymore.  Papi is a pretty selfless individual.  Angel is not.  I have the feeling that if Angel had somehow impregnated a girl in her youth and the kid showed up, Papi would welcome him as the child of the woman he loved, and because he has a keen sense of responsibility.  He enjoys taking care of people.  Angel enjoys being taken care of.

Yes, while it wasn't an admirable choice, it felt very true to Angel's character so I didn't have much of a problem with it. Of course, I also know it's a TV show so she needs time to come around.
