I'm not really seeing shenanigans in Yazan's father speaking Arabic in his own home to his family.  I would think that even if you were fluent in another language, the chances of you sitting around at home speaking it aren't all that high.  And just because you don't want to show your face doesn't mean you can't have the temper from hell.  She was going off on Brittany.  The fact that Brittany wasn't showing the "respect" mother Yazan thought she should probably pushed her last button.  (I also think there is a chance that mother Yazan also saw Brittany's social media and decided it was her duty to teach her proper behavior.)  Brittany could very well be doing it for social media exposure (this really is the most likely scenario) but I'm not 100% convinced the parents are in on it.

Not agreeing with this POV, but in that culture, One of the big challenges is family honour.  Whatever Brittany does reflects on the family now that she is engaged.   His parents are probably dreading what would happen after marriage since she shredded their hopes that she’d studied up and was prepared to be a proper Muslim wife, especially the mother who would be responsible for keeping the DIL in line, What would happen to their reputation?  I can’t image the looks Brittany’s social media would generate.   Total humiliation for the family.

Yes, wait until Mama Yazan finds out Brittany isn't divorced, and hasn't even started the process, but came to Jordan knowing the family expected her to marry Yazan a couple of days after arriving.  

I'm sure someone clued Mama Yazan in about Brittany's social media presence, and Daddy Yazan seemed to know about it too.    I can't wait until the fact that Brittany is still married, and hasn't even started the divorce process comes up.

Something jumped out at my last night as I watched the full episode of this craptastic duo:

1. For a self-proclaimed conservative woman who doesn't want her face shown on TV, Mother Yazan sure seems to know quite alot about 'social media'! I mean, if you're that conservative, I'm thinking you're not trawling social media to check up on your son's girlfriend.

2. Brit has BRACES on her teefs. And they're the kind of old school metal braces that you don't up and go to another country half a world away, without either removing them or making clear plans with a competent orthodontist in Jordan. I'm not saying there aren't any good orthodontists in Amman, but I AM saying that when I had braces I remember going in about monthly for check ups to see how the progress was going and to adjust things. To me this clearly shows she had no intention of staying there for more than however long the filming took.

Being religious or conservative has nothing to do with how you use technology (unless you are Amish, of course.)  It's kind of like how some very conservative Muslim women wear a hijab or even an entire face covering but love make-up and sexy lingerie.  Not wanting to show her face on this shit show does not mean she lives under a rock.  I would think they would make it a point to check Brittany's social media.  They want to make sure they know what she's doing and showing everybody else.

No, and I don't like all the assumptions that are being made about Jordan.  I have said this elsewhere, but thank to the American Queen Noor, formerly known as Lisa Halaby, Jordan is one of the more progressive countries in the Middle East.  King Hussein was progressive, too.  As a western woman I would not be held to wearing a hijab, however, if I was going to meet my conservative in laws, I would probably wear one out of respect.  Same with whenever I met any serious boyfriends parents*, I did not show up looking like I just got off work from Diamond Aces Gentleman's Club.

Ha ha, yeah. Jordan is definitely one of the more progressive Muslim countries. I always cover my hair in predominantly Muslim areas out of respect and not wanting to really stand out. But I've never felt like I "had" to in Jordan.

And didn't her daughter, Stephanie maybe, also have injuries? I've always said that if I were going to marry into a royal family it would be Monaco's. Although Liechtenstein isn't far behind. I was eating lunch in Vaduz (I literally took the train there JUST to pay $1 to get their glorious passport stamp) and this beautiful couple walked by holding hands. Nobody with them. They stopped and chatted with folks along their walk and even threw me a wave. Once they were gone I asked the server who they were. Apparently, the king and queen. She walked down to him every day for lunch and a walk. 

So did Brittany convert? She went from "I'm NOT becoming a Muslim!" to "Prophet Muhammad says that..." awfully fast.

I never felt uncomfortable in western wear, but I definitely didn't feel comfortable enough to go full cleavage or short skirt. I like to blend in a little. I'm all for wearing what you want, but what a lot of the women on the show don't seem to understand is that just because they CAN dress as they do at home it doesn't mean that they should. (And some shouldn't even dress that way at home... looking at YOU BGL and your mullet dress!)

While you are correct about Queen Noors Jordan, and it is still probably the most open and modern Arab country, it is a bit more conservative under King Abdul, and behaving and presenting yourself like Brittany does is still inappropriate and will make one stand out and not in a good way. Last time I was there was 2014 and I felt much safer and unobtrusive wearing a scarf over my head. In my western skirts, a little below the knee, with a nice blouse, I was still stared at in the hotel breakfast room by leering Saudi men, who were plentiful there. I also walked to a slice shop one day after work with a male colleague and I walked behind him, and wore a scarf over my head, my skirt was, I felt , a little too short but I had not other clothes to wear. In the spice shop I told my colleague what’s I wanted and he told the male shopkeeper because the shopkeeper wasn’t comfortable talking directly to a woman. So make of that what you will. Aside from the fact that’s I’m fairly certain this is a producer set up, Brittany could not survive there. She’d likely endanger herself with her dress and her foul mouth.

(asking in all seriousness). Is the shopkeeper's wife/sister mother there to transact with the women? I cannot envision the man of the house doing the shopping but maybe I am clueless.

A few years ago in Saudi Arabia, a man dropped some bread/food off to his friend’s elderly Grandmother.   She was punished for being alone with a man she was not related to.   Jordan isn’t that strict and they make allowances for tourists, but there are very clear deliberations about appropriate behaviour for a female.   Whether or not Brittany likes them is irrelevant.   I can see why Yazam’s family was upset that her social media was still up.   They were under the impression the wedding was imminent, and if their community saw Brittany’s twerking videos, there would be repercussions.

Since you asked, its typical that male relatives escort women shopping. I was in the old city of Amman on a Saturday and everywhere were women shopping and all were accompanied by men. This could be the husband but more often was another male relative- son, nephew, uncle, and so on. Its very common.

A bit of an update on the little boy:

I read something on Reddit a bit ago and the mother is still missing, her sister is heading to Florida to get the boy, and her brother saw the social media posts and identified his nephew. No one realized she was missing until the photo started circulating and people are making all kinds of negative comments about it, like her siblings should have known where she was 24/7, even though she lived on her own and was missing less than 24 hours when they found out. Seriously, people are judgmental assholes. 

You can also hire Brittany to record a promo for your social media accounts, or something.

I work with 26, 28, 32 year old women who want botox so bad!!!  I tell them, Y'all are too young for that!  And they think I'm crazy.  But then I tell them about a lady I know, who started that shit at 27, and at 57 looks like her face is melting!  She couldn't stop at just the botox.  She had a number of half facelifts, eyes done, eyebrows done, cheeks, lips... you name it.  Now she looks like a melting candle.

They're dumb. They think this will make them BEAUTIFUL.. But, they aren't beautiful NOW.  I just don't have the nerve to tell them THAT.

I'm thinking to myself: Save your money girl! Your FOUR CHILDREN might want to go to college!  You MIGHT want to take a vacation.  YOUR FREAKING HUSBAND MIGHT GO AWAY ( for whatever reason ) YOU MAY NEED A NEW TRUCK.  You know... that other shit thrown at you in life.
