So Sam Lane actually knows Clark is Superman.  I guess he loves his daughter enough not to blab it to the world.

And it'll be interesting to see how Clark balances all of this.  When we saw him on Supergirl he was ready to take off for years because he trusted Kara to handle things while he was on Argo.  Now he lives on an Earth with Supergirl, Flash, Black Lightning, etc.

To be honest, that latest trailer made me less interested in watching. It's also kinda sad that CW stars who I once thought of as young are now playing parents of teenagers on The CW (Tyler Hoechlin, Jared Padalecki).

Apparently the CW went all out in promoting this series at this past weekend's Super Bowl...

‘Superman & Lois’ Cast And Showrunner Talk Bringing Cinematic Groundedness To Arrowverse – TCA

Helbing said that he and fellow executive producer Greg Berlanti talked about how they wanted to make Superman in general different. “We talked a lot about shows like Everwood and Friday Night Lights,he said. He added that they wanted a family drama with Superman in it.

“Whenever you do any of these shows, you want to make them slightly different,” said Helbing. “We just approached this as much as we could like a feature — from the aspect ratio to the cinematography to the look to the design of the house and farm. We are competing with shows on cable and streamers…we wanted to be able to do that and offer audiences something of equal quality.”

SUPERMAN AND LOIS WILL HAVE A BRAND NEW KRYPTONITE TO OVERCOME - TEENAGE TWINS!

For her part, Tulloch says she was immediately sold when Helbing and Berlanti pitched the series idea to her and Hoechlin as more like Friday Night Lights than Arrow. “It was really grounded and real,” the actress said. “The series makes Lois Lane and Superman relatable because of lost jobs, and parenting their hormonal teenagers. Superman and Lois could be your next-door neighbors.”
*  *  *
Garfin added that the first conversations they had about portraying their relationship were about making sure it was clear that they love each other. “They can have fights, and can hate each other sometimes, but that’s because it’s built on a deep and wide foundation of love.”
*  *  *
Garfin was also quick to praise how the twins are written in the series, without the trite, teen defiance seen on many other shows. “It’s great to express teen characters in a more mature light,” he said of Superman and Lois. “The writing makes me so happy to have intelligence written into the characters and people can relate to that.”

‘Superman and Lois’ Review: Tyler Hoechlin Soars in The CW’s Hopeful Superhero Drama

Tyler plays Clark’s concerns that he’s a bad dad beautifully. This is Tyler’s first-time playing Clark as the lead after playing him in 12 episodes of television across the Arrowverse starting in 2016. You’d never know he was just a guest star prior because he carries the pilot on his back considering he’s in like 85% of the scenes. ....
*  *  *
If you are wondering about the tone and feel of the series, think Friday Night Lights if it had Superman and Lois Lane. ....
*  *  *
This review has been pretty positive, but I will tell you the problem I did have with it: Lois felt like a supporting character when this is ostensibly her pilot as well. I understand why they chose to focus more on Clark in the first episode. The narrative in the first episode is dealing with his secret and his hometown. Pilots are a tricky beast. You have to set up a whole series without it feeling clunky. I think they succeeded with that, but I wish Lois had more of a point of view.

The problem is that Hoechlin and Tulloch are not all that compelling as Lois and Clark. But that’s not a fatal flaw; the twins are much more interesting.
*  *  *
While crossover episodes are probably unavoidable if the show survives long enough, any series must stand on its own first. “Superman & Lois” does, for the most part. Berlanti and Helbing have created a stand-alone universe that is easily opened up to other possibilities.

Family teaser!

A little weird, but it's interesting that they are emphasizing that this is another "version" of Superman; kind of telling people that this one is going to be different. But I feel that's true of every new adaption of the character anyway.

Wow, looks like my fears about this show were right.

Why is he hanging bow-legged?

Superman & Lois Review: This Great Arrowverse Pilot Sets a High Standard
By RUSS BURLINGAME - February 9, 2021

The episode, like early episodes of Black Lightning, leans heavily on the family drama aspect of the series -- and like Black Lightning, Superman & Lois has the feeling of a prestige series, with visibly higher production values than many of The CW's other shows and writers who don't back away from potentially controversial elements.

The CW's Superman & Lois Is an Uneven But Solid Addition to the Arrowverse
BY SAM STONE    FEBRUARY 9, 2021

There's a reason Arrowverse fans have been clamoring for Hoechlin and Tulloch to get their own Superman series: They're both very good at their roles and play off each other well. With the added time in the spotlight and any links to the wider Arrowverse wisely held off for now to put them and their family in the spotlight, Hoechlin and Tulloch continue to shine as they're given the room to really lean into the emotional side of their characters. The rest of the cast succeeds on varying levels -- with some not succeeding at all -- but once the premise and family dynamic solidifies by the pilot's end, Garfin and Elsass hold their own with their on-screen parents.

Don’t get us wrong, we loved Bitisie Tulloch & Tyler Hoechlin as one of the power couples of comics. The concern came from that trailer? It just looked so . . . grim & depressing. And honestly? It just kind of put us off a little because, well, look at the world. The reviews coming in, however? They’re actually pretty good. So, maybe, Superman and Lois just had a bad trailer for a good series. It’s happened before.

Superman & Lois Casts Angus Macfadyen as Jor-El (Exclusive)
By RUSS BURLINGAME - February 10, 2021
https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/superman-lois-casts-angus-macfadyen-as-jor-el-exclusive-/

Spoiler

Scottish actor Angus Macfadyen will appear in The CW's Superman & Lois, playing the role of Jor-El, ComicBook.com has learned exclusively. The character, previously played by luminaries like Marlon Brando and Russell Crowe, is going to serve much the same role in Superman & Lois that he has done in previous installments of the Superman mythology: he will serve as a spectral guide to his son, Superman, via the technology of the Fortress of Solitude. Whether it will be Superman, or his children (whom we know will learn his secret identity in the pilot), who benefits from the advice is not yet clear.
*  *  *
Here's the official (albeit pretty minimal) character description for Jor-El.

"Jor-El is Clark Kent's Kryptonian father. Though he died along with Krypton, his brilliant essence still exists within the arctic Fortress of Solitude to provide guidance when his son seeks help."

The character will debut in the series' second episode, which will air on March 2 on The CW.

The CW, TNT & TBS To Cross-Air Encores Of ‘Superman & Lois’ & ‘Go-Big Show’ As CW Expands WarnerMedia & ViacomCBS Corporate Collaborations
By Nellie Andreeva    February 8, 2021
https://deadline.com/2021/02/the-cw-tnt-tbs-promotional-encore-superman-lois-go-big-show-the-cw-expands-warnermedia-viacomcbs-corporate-collaborations-1234689721/

Quote

The CW Network and its ad-supported cable sibling on the WarnerMedia side, TBS and TNT, have teamed up to give two tentpole new series an extra promotional boost with a one-episode cross-network rebroadcasts.

On Feb. 27 at 9 PM, TNT will air an encore presentation of the premiere of The CW’s Superman & Lois, starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch. It will be immediately followed by the brand-new special Superman & Lois: Legacy of Hope, which takes fans behind the scenes with sneak peeks and interviews from the cast of the new series, plus special guests discussing the legacy of the Man of Steel. Leading to the Superman & Lois premiere rebroadcast, TNT will air a Superman feature film marathon: Suicide Squad (1:00pm), Man of Steel (3:30pm) and Justice League (6:30pm).
*  *  *
The cross-promotion stint comes on the heels of similar efforts between the CW and cable networks owned by its other corporate parent, ViacomCBS, MTV and VH1.

“The cable siblings have realized — and vice versa —  that the CW as a platform has enabled them to do great things. I think we got the first taste of that when we did simulcast the VMAs and the season premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the CW chairman Mark Pedowitz told Deadline last month. “We provided a big chunk of that audience.”

At the time of those events, the CW already was in conversation with TNT about Superman & Lois.

“That has been one of the blessings of the Covid thing, that we are all looking at the platforms together to see the value of each other, the value that we bring and the value they bring to us in terms of helping each other,” Pedwoitz said, noting that there has been “a really good dialog” with both WarnerMedia and Viacom CBS cable entities.

He did point out that the cross-promotion opportunities are limited by the CW’s affiliate agreements as “the backbone of our distribution system,” which would not allow a simulcast of Superman & Lois on a cable network, for instance.
*  *  *
The CW already is forging deeper ties with WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, which has emerged as the current SVOD library home of new CW series. The two companies also are discussing co-financing original summer CW series to premiere on the streamer with a next-day airing on the broadcast network.

SERIES PREMIERE

After years of facing megalomaniacal supervillains, monsters wreaking havoc on Metropolis, and alien invaders intent on wiping out the human race, the world’s most famous superhero, The Man of Steel aka Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin, “Teen Wolf”) and comic books’ most famous journalist, Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch, “Grimm”), come face to face with one of their greatest challenges ever – dealing with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society. Complicating the already daunting job of raising two boys, Clark and Lois must also concern themselves with whether or not their sons Jonathan (Jordan Elsass, “Little Fires Everywhere”) and Jordan (Alexander Garfin, “The Peanuts Movie”) could inherit their father’s Kryptonian superpowers as they grow older. Returning to Smallville to handle some Kent family business, Clark and Lois are reacquainted with Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui, “Entourage”), a local loan officer who also happens to be Clark’s first love, and her Fire Chief husband Kyle Cushing (Erik Valdez, “Graceland”).

The adults aren’t the only ones rediscovering old friendships in Smallville as the Kent sons are reacquainted with Lana and Kyle’s rebellious daughter, Sarah (Inde Navarrette, “Wander Darkly”). Of course, there’s never a dull moment in the life of a superhero, especially with Lois’ father, General Samuel Lane (Dylan Walsh, “Nip/Tuck”) looking for Superman to vanquish a villain or save the day at a moment’s notice. Meanwhile, Superman and Lois’ return to idyllic Smallville is set to be upended when both a mysterious stranger (Wolé Parks, “All American”) and impassioned self-made mogul Morgan Edge (Adam Rayner, “Tyrant”) enter their lives.

“Superman & Lois” stars Tyler Hoechlin as The Man of Steel aka Clark Kent, Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane, Jordan Elsass as Jonathan, Alexander Garfin as Jordan, Emmanuelle Chriqui as Lana Lang, Kyle Cushing as Erik Valdez, Dylan Walsh as General Samuel Lane, Inde Navarrette as Sarah.

Superman & Lois: Behind the Scenes of The New DC TV Show
By Mike Cecchini    February 16, 2021
https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/superman-lois-behind-the-scenes-of-the-new-dc-tv-show/

Quote

“Part of why I find the character of Superman appealing as a fan, let alone as a part of the show, is that he has the power to destroy the world and he doesn’t,” Elizabeth Tulloch, who plays Lois Lane on Superman & Lois, says. “He’s doing the right thing because it’s the right thing. If he wasn’t Superman and he was just Clark Kent without the powers, he would be the same man. In other words, you don’t [need] powers to be good, decent, and kind.”
*  *  *
“Honestly, I was at a point in my life and my career where I didn’t want to commit to something that was a full-time thing on a show,” Hoechlin recalls via Zoom during a break from filming. “I had just left [Teen Wolf] and was enjoying the opportunity to try different things and move around a little bit. So it felt perfect. [Filming] was going to be a couple of weeks up in Vancouver. I could check the list and say I got to play a superhero– and Superman at that.”

But Hoechlin, who had previously auditioned for the role on the big screen for 2013’s Man of Steel, found himself drawn to the way the hero was being presented for TV.

“I liked what Supergirl was representing at the time and what it has continued to represent,” Hoechlin says. “I really loved that the show was just shamelessly optimistic and hopeful. I was happy to do something that was just very, very bold about it.”
*  *  *
“They were reading a lot of other actresses I recognized,” Tulloch recalls of her 2018 Lois Lane audition. “I kind of had a feeling, after I did it once, that I totally was doing something different from the other actors. The choice I made was just to have fun with it. I think, based on some of the feedback I got in the room, a lot of women had been reading that scene more seriously because, on paper, the scene did read as serious.”

The audition reading in question was a deleted scene from 1980’s Superman II, in which Lois, determined to prove that she knows Clark’s secret identity, pulls a gun on him and fires. A horrified Clark reprimands her, only for Lois to reveal that the round was blank. But by then it’s too late: he’s already confessed to being Superman.

“I just sort of played it joyfully,” Tulloch says. “And at the end, when he doesn’t die, I squealed happily and said, ‘I knew it.’” Tulloch recalls a note from Supergirl co-showrunner Jessica Queller: “She was like, ‘This is what we were looking for… there needs to be a joie de vivre about Lois.’”
*  *  *
“I can’t think of a more important time in recent history to be playing a journalist,” Tulloch says. “After the last few years, where I feel like journalists and members of the media have come under a pretty constant onslaught and had their roles diminished, I think it’s really important to be doing what she’s doing, using her words to fight on behalf of other people, and to fight for truth and justice.”
*  *  *
“Our first readings were on set,” Hoechlin says. “We didn’t get to do any of the readings together beforehand. I immediately thought she was perfect for the part. That feeling has only grown.”

“We really just have so much fun,” Tulloch says. “I think that’s part of why I hope people respond to us. Obviously there’s a level of gravitas to these roles, and what they’re doing in their roles in the world is really important, but they’re also really playful and they really like each other.”
*  *  *
“The way we approached it was, if Flash is the guardian of Central City and Supergirl is the guardian of National City, Superman is the guardian of the world,” Helbing says. “So it really doesn’t matter where Superman’s based. He can fly anywhere in the world in a matter of seconds. Once you understand that, it really doesn’t matter where his home turf is… it could be anywhere.”
*  *  *
“It’s such a polarized world that we’re living in,” Hoechlin says. “Superman’s ability to stand for what’s right without having to, for lack of a better word, demonize, is something I really appreciate about him. For me, that’s really that idea of compassion and empathy towards everyone. I think his hope is that everyone finds the right path.”
*  *  *
“Superman has always been hopeful,” Helbing says. “Considering everything that we’ve gone through this year, hope is infused in there and it should be. But it has to feel real, and it has to come out of hopefulness for real struggles that anybody watching this can relate to. If Superman can struggle and he still remains hopeful, and if Lois can struggle and she remains hopeful, then I think maybe we can, too.”

[Do we want a separate ratings/scheduling topic?]

It’s a bird, it’s a plane — no, it’s Superman & Lois! The new CW superhero series flew up, up and away with its 90-minute series debut Tuesday in primetime, with the pilot earning a 0.4 in the demo and 1.71 million viewers, marking the largest audience for a DC series since the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover episode of The Flash on December 10, 2019.

Superman & Lois was also the second-best CW premiere since the October 2019 debut of Batwoman. Last night’s series premiere matched the Nielsen Live+Same Day fast-affiliate demo of the debut of Walker, which drew 2.43 million viewers on January 21, sparking the network’s most watched Thursday primetime since 2018.

A second 30-minute Superman & Lois episode (0.3, 1.28M) followed the debut last night.

In the latest TV show ratings, Superman & Lois‘ 90-minute premiere event averaged 1.71 million total viewers and a 0.4 demo rating — with its first hour delivering The CW’s largest audience in that time slot (1.71 mil) in two years, since The Flash 5×12. And while it was not quite a Walker, which debuted last month to 2.44 mil and nearly a 0.4, it did deliver The CW’s second-largest season or series premiere audience since Batwoman circa Fall 2019.

Eh, god knows I realise The CW doesn't care about ratings and it will probably do amazing on HBO Max or wherever but I can't help but feel like it under performed a wee bit and that it would be higher for the premiere. Not hugely but for one of DCs most famous characters with a lot of buzz behind the show it seems like it should have beaten Walker and All American premieres in the demo.

To me it failed. It shouldve been on par/if not bigger than Walker in overall audience. Demos are hard nowadays, .4 is pretty good regardless and on par with a lot networks but it barely winced to a .4....if the ratings arent consistent I do think CW will cancel it due to budget.

The Jared Padalecki effect is real.  To me that is the only reason that show got higher ratings as it sucks.  This pilot was one of the best pilots I have seen in a while. I couldnt even finish the Walker one it was so bad.

Viewership and Ad Insights for ‘Superman & Lois,’ Plus More From The CW’s Arrowverse
ELEANOR SEMERARD  FEBRUARY 25, 2021

First, a look at the Superman & Lois premiere: Of all the live, linear minutes watched during primetime on the night of the premiere, 0.97% was spent on Superman & Lois, putting it at No. 20 for watch-time that evening across all broadcast and cable networks tracked.
*  *  *
The CW has a passionate fanbase, so it’s worth asking: Are viewers of one Arrowverse show more likely to watch others? Inscape examined viewership crossover for the last year among Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Batwoman and Superman & Lois. Some key findings:

  • At the high end of crossover: 61% of Legends of Tomorrow viewers tuned into at least ten minutes of The Flash.
  • At the low end: Only 2.8% of Arrow fans watched the Superman & Lois premiere.
  • People who checked out the Superman & Lois premiere were most likely to have also watched at least 10 minutes of Batwoman (30%).
  • Of the Supergirl audience, 49% have also tuned into Batwoman

The Live plus three was a considerable improvement over live plus same day. Viewers up by 1 million, to 2.7 million, demo up .2 to .6. Of course with that improvement, Live plus seven days should be even better.

One thing to keep in mind. Because of disputes with local stations and cable providers, many viewers can’t even watch CW programming live. While my local market is one, I’m not able to watch the CW live because my streaming service doesn’t include the CW. So I have no choice but to view CW shows on a delayed basis.

New interview with Nadria Tucker, the writer who was let go after raising issues with TPTB on race and other issues. Everything I've seen on this focuses mainly on Captain Luthor but they should probably also mention that the only? other Black character is Sarah's boyfriend who has been angry and violent every time we've see him.

I'm in the Orlando market, I have ATT streaming, used to have Uverse but dropped the cable and went with their streaming service. And I can attest that in this large market ATT does not have a deal with the CW, so I can't get it through my streaming service. We're going to pick up a Roku and hopefully I'll be able to access the app through that. But yeah, lack of access especially in larger markets makes a difference.

After the Supernatural finale fail, I honestly didn't give a damn about having access to the CW anymore. But my husband wanted to watch the premiere, and so we had to watch it off the website next day. I figured, eh, probably won't keep up anyway. And wouldn't you know it, the show is really good, we like it a lot, so now we have to jump through hoops to watch it due to lack of access to the network app for now.

Luckily ratings mean absolutely nothing to the CW, so the show should run for a few seasons. Still, it's clear the CW is asking for more money than it's worth, yet it's still seen as the bottom of the barrel network. So a lot of services are simply choosing to do without.

So we get five episodes and then it goes on hiatus?  So stupid... if we were only going to get five episodes before they had to pause because someone got COVID, then why couldn't they have just waited to air the entire season all at once?  Is this to keep people interested in "Supergirl"?  I've never seen Supergirl and have no interest in it and won't be watching it while waiting for "Superman and Lois" to come back.

My guess is that outside of the COVID pause, post production issues that took longer than expected.  I mean, This Is Us had to hold off airing a new episode the morning of a few weeks ago as the creator said they were doing post production work until the last minute for each episode and realized they couldn't keep up any more so they had to wait 2-3 weeks so they could catch up and the episodes could air.  There have been a number of shows that had positive results and had to pause but didn't put a dent in the scheduling.

I don't think CW cares much about Supergirl since it's ending & they are last minute throwing it on the air since S & L episodes aren't ready. Plus they already announced S & L's return date in the same announcement & as soon as its back Supergirls back on hiatus.

From Deadline.com Today:

Quote

Superman & Lois is flying high following its debut. The premiere episode of The CWseries drew 3.25 million total viewers in L+7, up 80% (+1.5 million) from Live+Same day, according to Nielsen, making it the most-streamed series premiere in the network’s history.

Superman & Lois also ranks first among The CW’s premieres this season in A18-49. The series premiere had the largest percentage growth in the key demo among the network’s new series debuts, up 105% over L+SD to a 0.76 rating in L+7.

Additionally, beginning with episode two, each episode of Superman & Lois’ first season will feature additional footage or scenes when it becomes available on The CW app and CWTV.com after its broadcast on the network, the CW said Friday.

If you have an internet connection you can use the CW.com website or the free CW app (iOS and Google) to watch episodes. The episodes are available as of midnight local time a few hours after broadcast. For most people either option shouldn’t be a problem. That’s how I’ve been watching CW shows on my iPad since 2015 since the app went live as I can’t get over the air reception and I got rid of cable several years ago.
