Episode Discussion II: The TFGH

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?

Are her nails new? The glamour of them (and paleness) took me out of the mood a bit.

I was looking at Portia's long crimson nails the other day, and wondered how she could do her job.  They're okay for Chief of Staff tasks, but not so much in trying to revive Lulu.  How would one even get gloves on?

Does Cody know about Sam?  He's on the same property as all the grieving people.  he's Dante's best friend, but he's just mucking out stalls?  And what time is it anyway?  It's still Halloween night, right?  Danny and Scout had time to go trick or treating, come back, Scout went to sleep, had a nightmare, had hot chocolate, went back to bed and fell asleep again, and Alexis planned an entire funeral. Yet, Ric is conducting business like it's the middle of the day.  Tracy can't believe Sasha's nowhere to be found (even if she lives on site she can't be expected to work 24/7 can she?)

If Danny and Scout can't live with their fathers (and especially in Danny's case that seems legit), I think they should stay with Dante and Rocco. They're a family.

Why does Cody hate Drew so much?  You'd think he killed his puppy or something they way he was all in with Tracy and "as long as we get to take down Drew."  He lives in a soap opera. Drew can't be the first cheater he's met.

I'm assuming with all this talk about tracking cycles and whatnot, Brook and Chase are going to have fertility issues.

Man, this show does like its bombs doesn't it?

I didn’t find anything strange about there being a nanny cam. I have a camera in my living room so I can keep an eye on the dogs when I’m out of the house. For a busy parent, it’s an easy way to check in your kid when you’re at work, not necessarily to monitor the nanny. I did enjoy Michael’s expression when he saw the video— maybe the only good acting I’ve ever seen from CD. I’m in the drop-a-crane camp— or at least hoping for some good adversarial action. Millow Vanillow has always been boring, but Millow vs Vanillow? There could be something there.

I don't find anything strange about the nanny cam. I find it strange that two people who presumably should have known about the nanny cam thought that right in front of it was the best place to have sex.

I was wondering about this, but we have just had a surrogacy story so I'm not too sure we really need another story about fertility issues.

Although I do wonder who was the last couple who planned a child and didn't just have an unexpected pregnancy.

Michael and Willow? I mean I'm calling it planned if you're married and not doing anything to try to stop it.  I don't know if they were actively all like "we need a baby now."

I feel like every "planned" soap pregnancy ends up becoming a fertility issue storyline. It's like as soon as a couple actually says on screen that they want to have a baby and are going to start trying, you know you're getting a storyline about fertility issues.  In this case, I'd bet money that we're going to end up with BLQ, blaming herself and saying that their fertility issues are her karma for faking a pregnancy, or some such shit like that.

I thought that this would be given consideration, at least. I know Dante’s not their father and has no legal right to them, but they have been living as a family long enough that for stability’s sake, maybe they should be allowed to remain where they are if that’s what the want. They just lost their mom, now they have to go through losing Dante and Rocco, too?

I can only assume it didn’t enter their minds because they were too overwhelmed by passion to think beyond ripping each other’s clothes off and befouling the rug where their children play. 🤢

Dante is the single parent of a teenage son and has a fulltime job that requires him to work long and variable hours.. While Danny and Scout may want to continue living in Sam's condo with him and Rocco, is Dante willing or even able to take on two grieving children who may resent Rocco for having a mom while theirs died trying to save her?

Plus we the audience know that Lulu is going to wake up and with Maxie reminding us that Lulu was still in love with Dante before she fell into the coma while Dante thought Lulu accept Dustin's marriage proposal.

It will hell of awkward for Scout and Danny to watch Dante and Lulu get drawn to each other. They will see Rocco plenty of times at the Q mansion but I have no doubt that Jason and Drew are going to take their kid to live with them.

Ryan Lavery is enough reason to hate Drew, frankly.

I do feel just a tiny bit sorry for Cameron Matheson, who seems like a charming and likable guy IRL, but I'm sorry, my dude, seeing your face onscreen you're immediately classified under D for Douche.

I will say there have been times when there was potential to not hate Drew. Remember the beard? The beard worked.

Drew, yes, but I'm trying to imagine Jason raising Danny on his own, and I can't picture it. I guess he'd move back into his old apartment, once Dante moves somewhere? Or he'll end up moving into the Q mansion with Danny? The only kid Jason has ever seemed remotely interested in raising was Michael. I think he's at a stage now where he loves his kids, but he doesn't think his life is something they should be around 24/7. Of course, if this leads to him finally being fully mob free and getting a more legal job, that could be interesting. Brennan landing Carly and Jason could really piss off Sonny. (This is all provided, of course, that SBu will actually put the effort into that storyline).

Dante is, by far, the best option out of the three fathers, and he's been the only consistent father figure in their lives. I agree he's going to have a lot on his plate, but also the story of all the kids adjusting to Lulu being back in his life (and, therefore, theirs) could be interesting family drama, along with Rocco and Danny maybe being at odds for a while because of the circumstances.

I've been meh on Holly for many, many years but if I wasn't before this mess will definitely do it. She's a complete buffoon and her daughter is still another useless character who has been on this show way too long, like most of the cast. The term 'veteran' no longer has meaning on GH when the bulk of the ensemble is just people Frank refuses to let go of. It is deranged that both Willow and Sasha (among others) have been on this show the better part of a decade.

Even so, Sonny and Jason now feel more irrelevant than ever. When all you've got for them is Sonny with Eva LaRue's chest or somehow plugging him into the latest jewel-hoarding evil baldo plot with Carlo Rota, and Jason taking a week to get involved with Retiree Robert (please, it's time), Holly and Sasher you can tell they're at a total loss. It feels completely alien to those characters. Meanwhile Carly has her exciting new romance with Dayplayer B. Who cares? Carly is salvageable because you can plug her into various stories, but what are Sonny and Jason going to organically do on this canvas? People love to bang on about Lucky but JJ is out here selling and has a lot of ties. What are the Big Two doing?

Why can't someone just give me 50K for being mad at them for no reason? Damn, Cody. Buys a lot of oats!

Only on this GH would they forego the obvious custody war Alexis (and Drew) would absolutely wage against Jason at this moment.

I honestly can't see Jason insisting on Danny living with him. Jason leaves his newly grieving son to go play hero to Sasha—that's not a father who's deeply invested in his son's well-being. Danny might want to live with Jason, but Jason is not going to drop everything for the next however many months to make sure Danny is okay.

I agree, but it's still a dramatic story to play.

Damn, they are really pushing Holly as the love of Robert's life with everything they've got. Are they trying to make Robert deadtome? Felicia may have left Mac a few times but she never hid a secret child from him. That should totally be a dead breaker but no, on this show it's just proof that they belong together.

And then there's Felicia pushing Sasha to forgive her mother. 🤢

I understand if TR wants to retire but Robert deserves so much better than this.

Meanwhile Drew refuses to leave Willow alone, and Michael, instead of talking to her, makes an appointment with Diane. Typical Michael.

And to no one's surprise, they are teasing Sasha being pregnant with Michael's baby.

Zzzzzzz  (Nice scene with Alexis and Diane though.)

Someone on staff is into them bad. They've chosen the worst possible way to go about it. I've never hated Holly before excepting the monkey virus period, but now with this and foisting more Sasher upon us I'm done. It's just ridiculous.

I love how Felicia didn't blink when Sasha told her she got injured when she was kidnapped and almost blown up. FINALLY someone realizes they live in Port Charles, where this stuff is commonplace.

Did I miss the car crash happening last week?

Oh, poor Anna. In the dark about Sidwell and not getting the answers she wants from Jason. Who'd've guessed?

They are pushing this so hard. I don't want Robert and Diane together, but Holly's return makes him look like a real dick for saying to Diana that Holly is in the past, but we're getting this crap.

Noted Bigot Natalia is sorry for how she treated Alison in the past. And she was nice to Kristina. I guess that solves that. Everything is fine now!

They fucked a week ago at most. There's no way Sasha would be pregnant yet. She should get the x-ray. (And the show needs to stop that flashback. Ew.)

I will give it to the kid playing Rocco: I thought he was mostly mid for awhile but he has brought it for this stuff and is quite good. The best since Hudson West. You could see Genie lighting up having someone young who's actually a talent to work with, even if their scenes were cut to ribbons so we could have more of the Scorpio geriatric reunion tour. Whereas I knew the kid playing Danny was green and weak awhile back, and he remains so. I know Steve had been working with him since he came back and Steve is seasoned enough to be able to teach him physical control; Danny had some emotion in the early scenes but kept grinning through them. Oof. (Also, did Jason really tell Sam's kids about their mother on the bench outside Bobbie's?) Not a tear shed with Carly either. He seemed weeks or months past it.

Legit ridiculous that Lulu's kid is grieving harder than Sam's own children. But I rarely expect much from soap kids, especially ones FV hires bc they're cute and then refuses to let go of. It's just embarrassing given GH's history with hiring a lot of good kids in the past. They should level up Rocco in story now, but if I know this show he'll be in backburner city just like Jake. I am ready for Lulu to wake up - I want to see this poor kid happy.

Anna acting like a jealous girlfriend is not a good look.

Oh, Robert. Holly is not inevitable. But if this is your HEA, I guess I can accept it. TR deserves a proper send-off. After losing so many vets, the writers need to be more proactive.

And Drew is still gross. Humphrey Bogart he is not.

Also: Kristina howling away at the top of her lungs in the hospital chapel was embarrassing, nasty work. It is mortifying how quickly they have tanked Kate Mansi, who was admirably carrying a lot of the show on her back in the spring-summer under Mulcahey IMO. The character has become utterly unrootable, is still calling her sister's child hers and shrieking through scenes. I think KM can recover but not with this kind of material.

I know I'm behind by a couple days but it is amazing how none of Robert and Holly's endless, interminable conversations about their relationship (which honestly feel like poor Tristan is a pull-string toy occasionally interjecting lines) seem to mention the fact that he had to have cheated on Anna in '92.

It's terrible. I do think Robert needs to be removed from active story at this point - TR looks terribly feeble, and I hate how they've so wasted his last decade of viability - but to go off with her with this kind of material is just kind of pathetic IMO.

Yes, Tristian can't really be on anymore.  I looked it up he's only 78.  I realize that's old, but my mom is that age and honestly, very strong looking and sounding.  But people age differently of course.  I will miss him, I have so much affection for Robert.

Yes Dante is the best option, and I assume he's going to put Rocco's needs first. Rocco will not want to leave Lulu's side from the moment she wakes up. I predict that the Sam's kids + Rocco blended family will end at that time. Danny and Scout may feel a little happy for Rocco, but ultimately they will feel Mom got "sacrificed" for Lulu's life. Seeing Lulu awake and getting better will always be a reminder that their mother is gone. "You lost your mom for a few years; we lost our mom forever" type of thing. While they know Sam's death wasn't Rocco's fault, that kind of bitterness doesn't go away.  I think there will be a permanent rift between Lulu's son and Sam's kids.

Yes, he sat Sam's kids down on the bench to tell them because Scout was pleading to go see Mommy now. Danny already sensed bad news because he could see Jason had been crying after he made them leave the hospital.

I don't agree that Lulu's kid is grieving harder. It seems like a case of Scout being traumatized and I think the young actress is performing that well. Mommy assured Scout personally that she would be fine after the surgery. Scout got teary-eyed and withdrawn because she just saw Mommy, who was saying I Love you, and now the adults are saying Mommy is dead - you'll never see her again. That's a lot for a child's mind to process.

Holly blows into town with trouble nipping at her heels then goes all over creation asking for help because she's in trouble. Miss me, show. And I have a hard time with Robert forgiving everything under the sun.

Drew climbing up a tree (he didn't say that, but it's Drew, so he probably did) to wait for Michael to leave his home so that he can go on his fishing expedition with Willow, swears he'll leave her alone before he starts hitting on her.

What in the ever loving fuck is wrong with Anna? I thought we were friends. Are we friends? Can we be friends? Why are you keeping things from me? You're so loyal to Sonny. Dear God! Get a hold of yourself, Anna. Are we sure this is Anna and not some pod person doing a poor job impersonating her?

Please, no babies. Especially for the baby hoarders. Enough of that.

NLG continues hitting it out of the ballpark. Her scenes were the best of the day.

Absolutely deranged the 180 they had Anna and Laura do on Sonny. I can't even process that or this whole Jason thing which makes it even more clear they are out of ideas for him. If they blamed Alex again for a lot of this year in her character I wouldn't squawk.

It may even have been only yesterday as Drew is just now returning Willow's earring unless no one ever cleans the playroom. A shoulder is far enough from her uterus and they'll put a lead apron over it anyway.

I'd like her to have a win too, especially that now she no longer has Cody and Robert is probably leaving the show.

But no one, not even Willow, deserves baby-hoarding Carly as your child's grandmother, especially if you are not married to the child's father.

I felt so bad for both Tristan Rogers and Finola Hughes for the drivel they had to recite today.  Pros they are, if they didn't need an emesis basin nearby.

I would a thousand times rather have had Robert go out in a blaze of glory than this.  We're talking about Robert Superspy Scorpio, not some sniveling idiot!  Ugh.

And poor Finola.  She actually did look sick while she was talking to Jason.

Since it's obvious the writers haven't a clue how to write for the characters they've got on canvas---and those they're trying to escort off---I propose they open it up to fans.  They can still write the dailies, we give them the story arcs.

The only scene worth watching today---and it was golden----was that moment between grieving Alexis and stoic Diane, when Diane brought the book over and Alexis clung to her, and thanked her.  No other dialogue was necessary, and both of the actors were skilled enough to pull it off.

ETA:  I don't think Sasha could be pregnant enough for a test to be positive yet.

It seems like this storyline should have Robin involved, to confront/call out Holly like she once did to Lisa, the woman who had a ONS with Patrick. And to talk some sense into Robert (esp. if this is TR's exit storyline).  Robin has enough history with Holly to do so, and her putting Holly on blast would have more impact than Anna's weak "this is low, even for you."

And what’s the point of making Sasha a Scorpio when Holly is only here temporarily and Tristan seems to be on his way out. I hope what actually happens is we learn Robert is not Sasha’s father after all, but his nostalgia inspires him to move closer to Robin so he can live his remaining years with his daughter and grandchildren.

Whether you love, hate, or are indifferent to him yourself, Steve Burton's Jason is like a big planet whose force affects smaller bodies in proximity when it drifts back around. His returns are always bad news for other guys in the cast who got more or better things to do in his absence.

Zander in 2002 went from being a fairly competent character with many strong relationships on both sides of the law, to a whiny, jealous fuck-up whose number would eventually come up in the dead pool. At the same time, the Billy Warlock AJ shifted from interesting-gray to dull-black. The Billy Miller version of Jason became Drew, lost his romantic pairing, and was put on the B/C-list with Kim and Oscar while the actor's contract burned off. Dex became a day-player cop who has love scenes with Joss once in a while. CamMat's Drew actually does pretty well in action/adventure/rescue material, and I think the actor likes playing that stuff, but it usually goes to Jason, so Drew has to be a glib aspiring politician.

Based on board commentary here, I may be in the minority, but making Sasha Robert and Holly's daughter FINALLY made her interesting to me. Yes, Sofia Mattson isn't the greatest actress (although she's a beautiful crier), but she's gorgeous, and projects an incredible likable warmth.

If they could just get her a dynamic love interest that she sparks with--NOT Michael, nor Jason--there could be real potential for the character. Ppl want to root for her. Cody was not it. I'm glad that's done.

Due to current circumstances, hopefully she'll leave the Q's because going from famous model/businesswoman to being treated like a lowerclass servant is just not cool.

Anyhoo, I'm actually watching her scenes now, and I want better for her. I'm just hoping, sigh, we aren't heading back to her and Michael. Please, please, no.

it's fine being the rebel hehehe goodness knows i'm on that side all the time.  For me. it's just more that they are literally warping history to make this fit after warping history to make Cody fit, and in my mind.. Nina was right there.. So I am like it would be kinda cool if Holly was working some kind of con and she was the kidnapped baby anyway. (Because for me Sasha/NIna make more sense that way than Willow or Nelle) not to mention GH basically makes EVERYONE related now so we're really heading into 2000-2008 DOOL territory that basically everyone was dating their relatives because EVERYONE was a DiMerra, a Black, a Kirakis or a Brady/Horton.

like my rebel thing is this - I really don't think Drew is being creepy. (I think CamMat is trying really hard bless his heart to make this work) but the COTD on youtube was the "you're blushing" scene and I was like i can buy this. it doesn't seem creepy or stalkerish or whaever it seems soap operaish.

again i kinda like Sasha. but legit. let's just buy her a puppy. or at least a stuffed elephant. those are cool.

(and i am also severely rolling my eyes at people wanting Michael to basically read Drew and WIllow for filith as if he hasn't cheated on Willow too AND hasn't cheated in the past. he is not as pure as the freshly fallen snow here).

Michael calling Diane after seeing Drew and Willow together is such a classic turd move from this classic turd. His first thought is of course divorce, rather than talking to Willow and getting marriage counseling. And of course his cheating with Sasha is justifiable—what else is a cuckolded penis to do but find someone else to fuck?

So much for wanting to make the marriage work and keep his family together. It's so stupid and unsoapy. But that's GH.

it's fine being the rebel hehehe goodness knows i'm on that side all the time.  For me. it's just more that they are literally warping history to make this fit after warping history to make Cody fit, and in my mind..

(I think Ryan is trying really hard bless his heart to make this work) but the COTD on youtube was the "you're blushing" scene and I was like i can buy this. it doesn't seem creepy or stalkerish or whaever it seems soap operaish.

OK, I mostly love Sasha and Nina, but I disagree that Nina and Nelle and Willow didn't make sense. They totes laid the groundwork for both of them. Nina and Nelle's VERY first scene together lays that down. The fact that it was NINA who ran the article about Joss' kidney that helped bring Nelle out of the woodworking, then Nelle worked for her. Of course, there was all the obvious Willow stuff, tge Charlotte class stuff, Nina and her grappling with each other, but the Nelle stuff was there too, no doubt planned as the 'ooh! Shock' reveal after dust had started to settle with Willow.

The kink in their plans came when Chloe Lanier decided not to re-sign.

As for Drew and Willow, I agree that it's soapy goodness, lol! I don't think Drew is stalking her, because it's obvious she wants him too. I do think he's taking advantage of her, buuut, she's not even trying to fight him. OTOH, this woman has severe psychological damage, I can't even...how that is not being explored, such a waste.

As for Sasha and the Robert/Holly retconning of it all. Uhm, yeah. But this is a soap opera. Luke Spencer would NEVER have cheated on Laura. EVER. But we got Ethan, and Luke whorin' all over the globe cuz reasons. Drew was utterly devoted Scout, a family man, and now he's a slimy, two-timing hound dog cuz reasons. Retcons happen all the time. GH has been on the air for decades, it's just, yeah.

But no one, not even Willow, deserves baby-hoarding Carly as your child's grandmother, especially if you are not married to the child's father.

I had totally forgotten that a child of Michael's would be a grandchild of Carly's. I'm voting for a puppy or kitten for Sasha. But honestly, Sasha deserves something positive to happen to her and for it to have some staying power.

yeah. but i'm consistent. i whinged about that too. especially because it was Tony Geary throwing a tantrum that he wanted a son who wasn't Greg Vaughan. I know that it's a soap and they make retcons happen, but make the retcon make sense is all i'm asking. I would have bought Ethan being Robert's a LOT more than Ethan being Luke's. and the fact that they're basically running the same story again just.. it's a no for me.

Like I can actually buy this Drew. and again I don't even think it's slimy. outside of it's your nephew's wife. but the reasons why Drew could be acting this way is actually pretty sensical. [mostly because this show refuses to have anyone actually EVER visit Kevin). he was captured [didn't really get anything for that], rushed into a relationship with Carly, was pushed aside for Jason, got beat up in jail and is probably just triggered a LOT of stuff. and now here is a woman blowing smoke up his butt and obviously doesn't "want him to leave." and he feels important. that all makes sense to me. what would make more sense if they realized that they BOTH need to see Kevin.

and i'm not talking about the story plots and the obvious We're repeating stuff that we did with Sam & Alexis stuff. I just mean. it would have worked equally well with Sasha and instead of having a massive. obvious "I always hated you. oh look we're close." thing. you could have it like "i was Conning you but oh acutally. you actually ARE who i want you to be." it still works, and as I said Sasha & Nina work a lot better together than Willow and Nina. just my cents on that.

Like. honestly sometimes i feel (and i'm guilty of it too) we just say "it's a Soap Opera" as if it's supposed to wipe away everything that we have a problem with. Yes. soaps do bend time and space to their will but it should also be stemmed in realism. it's one thing to adjust someone's age (and sometimes you just.. have to be "whatever tell the story" (someone brought up on how DOOL, Sami who was already a teen mother, had a massive relationship AND KIDS with someone who was born on screen  about 2 years after her kid was).  but when you're actually destroying characters and a lot more actual relevant history to shove a square peg into the round hole it should be, no. respect the history. find some way else to introduce the story that doesn't spit on it.  that's all.

Oh I love Sasha and always have.  I also think she's a fantastic actress, and don't understand why people would say she is bad.  Are people saying that?  I think she's better than many actually.  She blows Mansi out of the water IMHO, for one example.

I like Sasha, but tying her to the Scorpios seems pointless. Marrying Cody would have given her the same connections. If Robin or Robert were still major players then yes, introducing a sister/daughter would open story potential.

The best thing they could do with this revelation is to lean into Sasha’s con artist past, because the willowy victim isn’t working. Maybe she can fill the PI void that Sam left behind (run the pesky dog lady out of town.) It would be a good opportunity to chem test her with JJ.

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?
