  1. I even rewound the DVR and listened again, and I did not hear her say "What is..."
  2. I appreciated Johanna's gutsy wagers, but she lost me when she didn't start at the top of the category in the second round. Also, I did not hear a "What is" when she answered the inertia clue, so it doesn't hurt my feelings that she lost. Congrats to Michelle -- agreed, though, that she got lucky that Johanna missed FJ. What was with Michelle's wager? Was she protecting herself against Wes -- if he doubled his score, but she missed FJ, would she still have been ahead of him? Maybe she didn't think Johanna was a threat? Who knows. FJ was another instaget for me. I did at least have to read the whole clue, though -- mostly because the important bit was at the end. I also got mini-stroke, drive drunk, Trojan War (lucky guess), and macaroni, just from the "feather in your cap" part of the clue. Michelle reminds me a little of Mary Steenburgen.
  3. Glad George whiffed FJ. He was kinda slow on the clue-picking, though he seemed to have a pretty good knowledge base. I answered FJ before Alex finished reading the clue. I've read all three of those books. I can't believe Three Little Kittens was a TS! And it made me sad that Speechless was -- it's a really good show. I also got ape, Denzel Washington Monument, Google Earth, and wadi -- thank you, crossword puzzles! Wadi shows up a lot in those.
  4. I generally wave in the direction of the camera when I do something like that.
  5. Me, too! And I was definitley not the target demographic for marketing (I was in college!). (But I bought one of the plush toys anyway, and I still have him.)
  6. I saw this tonight, and honestly, I coild barely recognize anyone, they’ve all had so much work done. But it was an enjoyable piece of fluff — I laughed a few times, despite hating the trope that a woman just has to have a man or she’ll be lonely and unhappy forever. It also bugged me that the daughters just gave in so quickly after Diane Keaton’s extremely weak and unconvincing speech. However, I would leap at the chance to fly in that little airplane. It was gorgeous!
  7. So glad Becky didn’t win. Something about her didn’t sit right with me, though I can’t put my finger on what it is. She did need a BMS for Hoover, and it’s a Get Out Of Jail FREE card, not just a get out of jail card. Boo, hiss to the judges on those. I also didn’t much care for Wes’s jacket tonight, but maybe I’m just cranky. I first said dates for FJ, then changed to figs. Cherries never occurred to me — I couldn’t even think of a fruit that sounded remotely like the town name.
  8. Good for you, @M. Darcy! :) I had several ideas, but none of them was correct. Boo, hiss. Also boo, hiss that Lauren lost. I hoped she'd have a nice run. Not to disparage the new champ, mind you. Third place guy wagered wisely, I thought. It could have worked out well for him. I did get Briggs & Stratton, moose, and Delaware, and I also learned that ketchup is derived from a fish sauce. I had no idea.
  9. I give myself an allowance every month. It helps keep me on budget and also on track with savings if I have a finite amount of money to spend freely or frivolously each month.
  10. I might be able to tolerate that if their pizza were tolerable.
  11. I am disinclined to patronize Sonic because of their commercials. I hate those guys, and the women aren't any better. They give me the impression that if I eat there, I'll become an idiot like them. I have plenty of other choices for food, thanks.
  12. One of my college roommates had one. I had a regular electric typewriter, but it had a cartridge with a ribbon in it, so instead of having to change a ribbon, I only had to eject and replace the cartridge. Actually, now that I think about it, I think it had a correction ribbon as well as an ink ribbon. I think it was a Smith-Corona. I remember one professor would not accept a paper if it had any White-out, erasures or other errors. It had to be typed perfectly. I also remember getting to the bottom of a page, and making a typo in the last line. I had to retype the whole page! I borrowed my roomie's display typewriter after that.
  13. I've only been through/past it on the interstate -- it's nothing special. But a little further on, on the way down the mountain towards Mt. Airy, there are spectacular views of Pilot Mountain.
  14. I watched the original on USA yesterday, and they had TONS of ads for the new movie, including shots of the guys as Donna originally meets them. Unfortunately, one of those ads was right after Donna sees them in her goat shed and remembers them as they looked 20 years prior -- the guys in the new one look absolutely nothing like Donna's flashback. Disappointing, really.
  15. I think I first heard fivehead in association with Kelsey Grammer/Frasier.
  16. Grrrr! I was out last night, but dutifully set my DVR to record Jeopardy! Unfortunately, there was a severe thunderstorm during the show, so the signal was lost and I missed all of the second round and FJ! The signal came back as the credits were rolling. Boo, hiss. I did get to see Lauren dominate the French category, and cause Alex to fall hopelessly in love with her -- he didn't even pretend to try to correct her pronunciations! Pretty funny. Marilyn's story wasn't much better than Thursday's, but I'm glad she got to say hi to her grandfather. It might have been better for Alex to have asked about that the first night. Of the (few) clues I got to see, I got the TS of Joe Louis and Maytag. I don't think I would have gotten FJ -- I don't watch any of the shopping channels.
  17. Not that I'm aware of. The last car I bought with a carburetor was in 1989, and even then, maybe half the cars I test drove had fuel injection systems instead.
  18. It’s a common phrasing around here, regardless of education, but it’s “a couple or three”, meaning two or three.
  19. It’s not too far from Pembroke, I guess. I’ll have to ask some of the folks around here who were extras and/or worked behind the scenes which bits were shot here, but it was more than “official” information sites would have you believe.
  20. I couldn’t remember Michael Flynn’s name, and was randomly shouting out names of former members of this administration. And there are quite a few. LOL @saber5055 about the pendant — I thought the same thing! @Mindthinkr, I believe that scene of Dirty Dancing was actually filmed at Mountain Lake, just a short ways up the road from where I live in Virginia. Lots of the movie was shot there, despite it not being mentioned in the E! True Hollywood Story about it.
  21. But at least you picked an American Author, which was the category, unlike the guy on the end. Agatha Christie was a very bad guess. It took me about half the think time, but I did finally come up with the correct FJ. I might have only had time to write down Stowe, though -- do you think they would have given it to me? I also got Dostoevsky and manifold. And didn't the new champ get a resounding "Good for you!"? Big drink!
  22. My parents do, and several of my neighbors and I get a print paper, but it gets put in a mail-box-like box, not just thrown in the driveway. Though as far as I know, none of us goes to get the paper wrapped in toilet paper.
  23. I wanted them all to win! Well, with a slight edge to middle girl, but they all were great contestants. FJ was an ultra super instaget for me -- I had it before Alex finished reading the question. I love them, and have seen them in concert a couple of times. Can you start writing before he finishes talking, or are there lights to indicate when your pen is activated, too?
  24. Sorry about your loss, @Gimmick Genius, but at least Dave didn't win! I could barely watch the first round with his jumping around crap. It seemed less bad in the second round, but maybe he just wasn't buzzing in and picking clues as much. I also said Poland for FJ, but didn't think it was right. The peace palace part threw me off. I did manage to get Atlanta, aloof, and jetty, though, and wondered if we really needed to hear a bit of Reveille. I got that one before Alex finished reading the clue. I was disappointed that Upton Sinclair and Sinclair Lewis weren't in the confusing authors category. And good for you, Jim! Drink!
