Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage
Browncoat replied to Maverick's topic in Commercials
OMG, shut up about that kitty litter, Martha Stewart! -
Almost instaget FJ for me tonight. I actually pre-called it when I saw the category, but gave it a little thought before writing it down. She was the only one I could think of who wasn't primarily known as a suffragist. I also got the TS of wine, graphite and diamond, and Ecuador. I visited Ecuador several years ago on the way to Galapagos, and some of the Ecuadorians I met seemed a little salty that their hat is known as a Panama hat.

I got FJ, mostly because Lois Lane was the only girl reporter I could come up with. I didn't think it was right, though -- I was trying to think of Brenda Starr, but her name just would not come to me. If it had, I would have said Brenda Starr. The only TS I got were Oktoberfest and Krishna.

Almost makes me want to get HBOMax, but I'll probably hold out until it airs on TBS.

Buying books or borrowing from the library? Which do you prefer?
Browncoat replied to RealHousewife's topic in Books
Library most of the time. I've run out of space in my tiny house for any more books! -
I think it's the bait-and-switch that bugs me. I love the original one, and get all excited that that's the one I'm going to see, but then get let down when it's the new one. Also that the little girl picks the "Whew!" kiss for her cookies.

I did not get FJ tonight. It was another of those that I could have sat here all night and never come up with the correct response. However, I did get the TS of Cedric the Entertainer, and Excalibur. Congrats to Steve Martin! He was brilliant in the before and after category.

Say What?: Commercials That Made Us Scratch Our Heads
Browncoat replied to Lola16's topic in Commercials
Why didn't he just have it delivered to his own house? Then he could have unpacked it and wrapped it nicely. -
I am really sucking hard on FJ this week. Once again, I had no idea, and suspected I wouldn't when I saw the category. At least I was right about that. The only TS I got were valet, peplum, and crystals. I can't imagine anyone looking good in that paper bag thing.
-
I also said Wyoming for FJ, but wasn't confident. I don't think the correct state would have come to me if I'd sat here all night. I didn't get any TS, either, although there were a couple that I should have.

Holy moly! I just caught up with last night's game. Not the best showing, was it? I also did not get FJ, bu I got an astounding number of TS. Those include Suffolk & Norfolk, Osage, mathematics, evolution, photoshop, Jaguar, Henry Fonda, motorcycle, lime, and Zapata. It made me incredibly sad that Henry Fonda was a TS, especially since one of the movies mentioned was Mr. Roberts. Can someone enlighten me as to why Alisa bet anything on FJ? Or actually, why any of them bet anything on FJ?

I saw this last night, and while I didn't love it, I didn't hate it, either. I mostly just wanted all of them to go into therapy. There was way too much "I'm fine." going on -- they were not fine. I will say, though, that the three leads were fantastic. I believed all of them, especially the kid.

The Business: News, Rumours, Analysis, and More
Browncoat replied to sdpfeiffy's topic in Everything Else About Movies
Too bad it's probably not the real original Return of the Jedi, with the "Yub Nub" song at the end. I miss that when I watch the movie nowadays. -
I totally said Mary Queen of Scots. Oops! I guess I thought that since her son was King of both England and Scotland, that Scotland was no longer independent? Who knows. Or it could just be that Mary is my go-to Scottish monarch. And the only TS I got was dint. Good game! It doesn't hurt my feelings that Steve Martin won.

I think the guy has just put a bow on the old shirt for the dog. I like the ad, though!

It's worth it to see on the big screen. The cinematography is really quite good as well.

But I didn't think Ansel was awful in the movie! Or maybe I had low expectations? I thought he did quite well as the somewhat bland white boy. As I said above, I was impressed with his singing -- especially his ability to hold his own with Maria, whose voice is truly impressive. I honestly wasn't aware of his past misdeeds. I can, however, see where not subtitling the Spanish could be problematic for some people. I knew about that going in, but it didn't bother me. Sure, maybe I didn't understand every single word, but it was easy enough to get the gist. When I went, the crowd in the theater was about average based on the other movies I've seen recently. Only "Encanto" had a larger crowd.

Oh, man, this was so great! I loved this adaptation. Who knew Ansel Elgort could sing? But he knocked it out of the park. In fact, all the leads were great. I loved what they kept from the original, and I loved the changes/updates they made. It all worked really well for me. The absolute standouts, though, were Maria and Anita. Those women are fierce, and the actors (and Spielberg) did them justice. Their voices are fabulous. Happy Birthday today to Rita Moreno, who brought me to tears this afternoon in the movie theater as Valentina, Doc's widow. She solos with "Somewhere", and that song always gets me, but it extra got to me with Rita singing it. I might have more thoughts later, but my main thought was, "Damn, this was good!" ETA: the scenes where the Jets were purchasing the gun, and later playing with it were a little unnerving, given the recent on-set accidental shooting. ETA again: I absolutely adored Maria's dress at the end. That intense sapphire blue is one of my favorite colors, and I loved the cut and style as well. Anita's yellow dress is pretty fabulous, too.

I can't stand Will Ferrell, and I hate the movie "Elf".

RE: opening gifts: After our free-for-all, we had the extended pleasure of showing off our gifts. My mother always asks everyone, "What did you get?" So we still get the instant gratification of opening presents right away, but everyone else also gets to see what we got. Works out better if something's a little disappointing (like silverware place settings when you're six. I appreciate them now, but I certainly did not when I was six.).

2/5 this week, with the asterisk.

Another bust on FJ tonight. I just couldn't come up with anyone. The only TS I got were Richard III and Docs. JP needs to learn to use his inside voice.
-
I remember that! I wouldn't have been able to tell you what it was from, but we used to quote that all the time.

In Memoriam: Entertainment Industry Celebrity Deaths
Browncoat replied to Kromm's topic in Everything Else TV
Oh, I'm terribly sad about Mike Nesmith! I loved watching The Monkees back in the day. RIP Mr. Nesmith. 😢
