Gender On Television: It's Like Feminism Never Happened
DXD526 replied to Bastet's topic in Everything Else TV
I see this kind of thing all the time, and it never ceases to amaze me. A picture of a film or TV star from the 70s or 80s, captioned 'You won't believe what she looks like today!!' Um, really? Given that that was 40 or 50 years ago, I probably will believe it. Why is it being brought up? Idiocy. -
Say What?: Commercials That Made Us Scratch Our Heads
DXD526 replied to Lola16's topic in Commercials
This reminds me of a Dr. Pepper commercial from a few years back, where the slogan was, 'Diet Dr. Pepper; it tastes more like regular Dr. Pepper.' Than what??? Nuclear waste? -
A weak start, 1/5. Thanking Ringo, like many here. But that You're Sixteen cover of his, 'ick', indeed. The only person singing that song should be another 16 year-old. That triple chocolate mousse reminds me of Jello 1-2-3! Am I the only one old enough to remember the illustrious Jello 1-2-3? I loved the stuff! But then, I was 5...

A 'retreat for single ladies age 16+'? So, any 16 year-old who is unattached is considered a loser? 'Old maid' for this strain of fundies starts at 16? Gotta get 'em married and knocked up ASAP, that's what god wants for the ladies. Well, that's what they say their version of god wants, anyway. YMMV on what god actually wants...

S22.E24: Kaitlan Collins, James Carville & Dan Crenshaw
DXD526 replied to Mr. R0b0t's topic in Real Time With Bill Maher
I immediately dismiss any arguments from anyone who says 'Democrat party.' They've proven themselves to not be a serious person, and therefore, undeserving of attention. Carville's stained shirt was like sandpaper on my eyeballs. The guy shouldn't be going on TV if he doesn't know better than to wear dirty clothes. -
Homicide: Life On The Street - General Discussion
DXD526 replied to WendyCR72's topic in Homicide: Life On The Street
I was shocked the other day to see in a Sex and the City episode from 2000, Carrie smoking in a restaurant. I would have thought that it was illegal by then, but I looked it up, and smoking wasn't banned in public places in NYC until 2003. So while it seems like it's always been that way, it's actually only been about 20 years in many places. Smoking is a big thing on Homicide. Frank is always puffing away. Same with Felton and Crosetti. Both Howard and Bayliss try to quit at one point, and aren't quiet about it! -
I always hesitate to grow fond of any of the flotsam players on my favorite team, because they're often gone by August.

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

There's already Halloween candy in stores around me, too. I don't understand the concept of that; am I supposed to buy it now? That will be very festive, come October: "Here's a piece of 3-month-old candy, kid, happy Halloween!" -
1/5. TH only. I see I'm not alone in that 😁 Hard to believe S40 is over! It was fun. I like the new champ, though I'll probably have forgotten her by the time S41 starts! C U all in Sept!

2/5, TH/F. TH was an instaget, having been a Talking Heads fan for going on 50 years. But it was an unusual FJ, in that it would be hard to figure out for anyone who isn't a fan, I think. Chris and Tina being married isn't common knowledge, nor do I consider them to be 'showbiz' really, not in the classic sense. But it was still great to have the Heads be an answer to FJ!

Milestone Moments: All The Celebrity Vitals

A favorite quote from Lt. Howard Hunter, talking to Capt. Furillo about his date with the infamous Grace Gardner: "Frank, she heats up her body lotion in her microwave! (long pause) I mean, Judas Priest! How is any right-thinking male supposed to keep his powder dry under that kind of ungodly erotogenic pressure?" Nobody could turn a phrase quite like Howard! RIP, Mr. Sikking.- 4.7k replies

Night Court Media: Feeling MUCH Better Now…

I've always enjoyed Wendie Malick, so this is good news. I was really starting to like Olivia, though, so I'm not really happy she's being replaced. -
Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage
DXD526 replied to Maverick's topic in Commercials
This is odd, since the TV ad specifically states they do laundry and windows. Kind of weaselly if they charge extra for it. I assume the small print on the $19 first cleaning is that you have to commit to several more cleanings at the regular price of something like $50? -
Why Grammar Matters: A Place To Discuss Matters Of Grammar

Heard on a sportscast today: "He woke up at 4:30 a.m. in the morning..." As opposed to 4:30 a.m. in the afternoon? Grrrrrr...- 4.7k replies

The current Jeopardy! champion told a story in yesterday's show about how his car was used in a B99 episode. He didn't say which ep, but did add that they were looking for a beat-up car, and his fit their needs!

S22.E21: Ray Kurzweil, Chris Matthew’s, Tulsi Gabbard
DXD526 replied to Tara's topic in Real Time With Bill Maher
Gabbard was another in an ever-growing list of right wingers who go on this show to spout their talking points, and bask in the glow of being considered 'brave' to go on a 'liberal' show. I don't know why Bill keeps inviting these people on, but he does. It's never fun to watch. All Gabbard did was deflect, and sit there with a dumb look on her face when Bill tried in the least to call her out. -
Wow, clues referencing The Bridges of Madison County and Mommie Dearest are TS?? Go ahead and make me feel ancient. While I have to give kudos to Drew for managing to amass a fair amount after falling so far into the red, his smugness annoyed the crap out of me, so not sorry to see him go.

Milestone Moments: All The Celebrity Vitals
DXD526 replied to OtterMommy's topic in Everything Else TV
Heartbreaking news. I was introduced to the wonderful Mr. Mull at a young age through Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, much like the recently deceased Dabney Coleman, and have been a lifelong fan of both. Mull is best remembered from that show as Barth Gimble, who went on to host Fernwood 2 Night and America 2-Night, but it's often forgotten that he was preceded by his brother, Garth, also played by Mull. He was an ill-tempered and violent character, who memorably met a nasty end, being impaled by a Christmas tree! On F2N and A2N, while Barth claimed to be fond of Fernwood, he also sometimes referred to it as "the town that killed my brother"! Mull was also very versatile, and was a painter and musician. His 1977 album, "I'm Everyone I've Ever Loved" is highly recommended. It's a fusion of great music and jokes, and I've had portions of it memorized for over 40 years. Here's a tune you may have heard and didn't know was his! RIP, Mr. Mull. You will be horribly missed.- 4.7k replies

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

It was Lenore Skenazy who popularized Free-Range Kids, and now has a website. I really enjoyed her columns when she worked at the NY Daily News. https://www.freerangekids.com/ As for clothes shopping, I always try on women's pants, but wind up buying men's. Those women's sizes never fit right. Give me a waist and an inseam! -
