I haven't watched this for a while.  Have Rachel and Stan divorced and Stan lives in Las Vegas now?  Did Charlie end up being Danny's son?

And the biggest question of all, why was Grace wearing earrings just after surgery?

I seem to remember a big plotline when Rachel and Stan wanted to move back to the mainland (but I'm not sure if it was Vegas or not) and Danny didn't want them to take Grace. A divorce happened sometime after that.  I also seem to recall that Danny found out that Charlie was his son when Charlie needed a bone marrow transplant (?).

I've already deleted the episode, and didn't notice the earrings, but I'll bet she had on some make-up too.  (And that bandage around her head looked too loose.  It looked like it was just kind of perched on her head like a paper hat.)

It was interesting that we didn't revisit Grace's friend's father.  He blew up at Danny, was escorted off-site by security/police and we never saw him again.  You would think that he would have been shown coming back and apologizing and acknowledging that Grace was being a good friend to his daughter.  Maybe there was a scene that got cut for time or something.  It just seemed that they should have finished that bit of story.

I was wondering about him too.  Especially after the scene with the bully, knowing Grace stood up for Katie at the party, it would have been nice for a bonding moment between the two sets of parents.  We never even found out if Katie was OK.

Rachel & Stan wanted to move to Las Vegas at the end of S2, I think. He was supposedly building a new resort & wanted Rachel & the kids to come with him. Danny told Rachel she couldn’t just move Gracie every time she wanted, just because she had primary custody; especially not once Gracie put down roots, made friends, & forged a life somewhere. Danny also said he thought that was already happening with Gracie & he countersued Rachel for his own custody modification regarding her: she would get to live with him half the time & Rachel had to get his permission to take her off the island/out of Hawaii. Danny actually got that modification during S4. Then in S5, Charlie got sick & Danny found out he really was Charlie’s father, after he was the best match of his immediate family as a bone marrow donor. That was when the divorce (Rachel & Stan’s) happened.

Rachel was having an affair with Danny at the end of season one.  She got pregnant, and they were all going back to New Jersey.

Then Steve and Kono got arrested (him for killing the governor, her for being part of the money theft out of evidence).  Danny sent Rachel & Grace on to NJ while he tried to work on things in Hawaii without the task force and without his ties (something about defrocked cops not wearing ties).  Also in the Show timeline week between the S1 finale and the S2 premiere, Rachel told Danny she had her dates wrong (Anvil) and the baby was Stan's and they were going to try to work things out, back in Hawaii.

So mid season 2 Rachel goes into labor early (Anvil) while Stan is on a business trip (China, I think).  Danny wound up being the labor coach.  Baby was named Charles William (Anvil) Edwards.

A week or so after that, Stan showed us all what a mensch he was when he allowed Danny to shoot him as part of the search for the kidnapped Grace.  That's the last we saw of Stan (who was shot "cleanly" in the shoulder and who did survive), because the actor got a role on GCB.

As part of his career progression and part of their marriage therapy, Stan got a transfer/promotion to Las Vegas.  This is when Danny put his foot down, and in Danny style embraced that he and Grace were now both locals.

Fast forward a few years to the season 5 premiere.  Danny & Charlie "know" each other from the parental hand-offs of Grace.  But Charlie got very sick and needed a bone marrow transplant (Anvil Hits Water And Makes Big SPLASH).  Testing showed that Rachel wasn't a match and Stan wasn't the father.  It is implied that a major reason for the Williams' divorce was Rachel's fear of Danny's professional risks as a cop, so when he chose 5-0 over his family, she decided to make as much distance as possible.

This was the point of no return for the Edwards marriage; they divorced and Rachel seems to have re-located full-time to Hawaii, with joint custody of both kids.

I don’t think Stan going to Las Vegas was part of his marriage counseling in his marriage to Rachel. Also, I’m pretty sure Stan, especially being so wealthy (wealthy enough to live in a mansion & give Rachel, Grace & Charlie anything they wanted, anyway) in his own right, was self-employed/the owner of his own land development company.

He didn’t get a transfer/promotion to Vegas; he/his company apparently simply signed a deal with whomever you do that to build a new resort there—which is taking a really long time, unless he’s building more than 1, since he started building it at the end of S2 or the beginning of S3 (as I remember). As for moving there like Rachel mentioned this week, either he still has construction in progress on something or he just likes the place.

I’ve always thought Stan was supposedly modeled after the wealthy real estate developer version of Donald Trump—only nicer & not as shady & potentially corrupt in that line of work. At least not shady & corrupt by the time he allowed Danny to shoot him to hopefully save Grace’s life after she was kidnapped by Danny’s old partner from the Newark PD who came to Hawaii because he was out for revenge against Danny as the partner was a dirty cop & Danny’s testimony at his trial, once he was caught, was a key part of the ex-partner being sent to prison for 10 years—he was now paroled/released—& his wife divorcing him & his kid refusing to talk to him after that.

I've been on tenterhooks waiting for this episode with all its predictable angst and, yes, it delivered - thought the Danny & Rachel dynamic was done well, very credibly, by both actors and SC truly revels and excels in all the emotional stuff. As a mcdanno shipper, I admit I would have liked a bit more of Rachel's role to have gone to Steve (as I wished Catherine's had gone to Danny in 9x11) but this balance was believable. It's clear that TPTB want a Danny/Rachel reunion - just as they insist on leaving the Catherine door open.  We heard last week that Steve's girlfriend (forgotten her name) is no longer in the picture, and here, Melissa was not mentioned at all either (although in the circumstances maybe that's OK) - there's a definite feeling of the way being cleared for a return to the guys' relationships of the earlier seasons (y'know..as if there was a desire to end the show in a neat, come full-circle, bookends kind of way).                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Chi's delivery to bitch-girl's father was very well done. TPTB know how to play to his skills. Noelani's little interaction with Charlie was v cute and the family feel of Danny's kiss of thanks and the support of the rest of the team was nice (although, oddly, particularly considering I am a fan of his acting, I found Chi's description of the situation to Junior near the beginning somewhat 'detached', considering he must know Grace extremely well through son Will).

The Grace montage of real life and on set photos was a good and moving device - felt like a real swan song for the character (other than as a named reason for SC to be away from the show in future ie: visiting Grace at her mainland university). I doubt we'll see her again.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      The secondary case (although it took up at least as much time) was yet another good showcase for Tani (although the beating-up scene in a restaurant was ridiculous in the traditional H5-0 way)and Adam & the actor playing Koa did well with it too.                                                                                                                                                                                                            All in all, personally, I was more satisfied with this episode than last week's underwhelming delivery of promise.

As others have said, it was very weird that they left the Katie & her father loose end.  Thought it would be Katie's dad apologizing and joining the McGarrett/Dano fan club.  That was really lazy writing to leave it open like that!

Was it just me or did Rachael look like she was wearing a wig?

Regarding the bolded & italicized: Teilor Grubbs is in the cast list for next week’s episode, per the press release CBS issued for it that was linked, by me, in the thread for that ep a couple of days ago. So, unless it was a mistake, we’ll be seeing her again this season. And don’t forget, the verdict’s not in yet on whether or not we’ll get an S10. If we get 1, we’ll probably see her then too.

Random observations while watching:

  • Geez, Tani and her brother may have had a rough childhood but they sure won the great hair gene lottery - the two of them on the road were giving me weird Charlie's Angels flashbacks.
  • It's raining in Hawaii!!!
  • Noelani looks cute - she could join the luscious locks siblings to complete the trio.
  • So, this week it's Tani's turn to ignore police procedure and civil rights?
  • Oh, wait - Steve's joining in with a little bit of intimidation and a forced confession. Too bad little Miss Smug did not get some of that treatment, she was the episode's true villain (and kudos for the actress of selling that poisonous mixture of cute and awful that rendered Grover and Steve speechless and sent McBride into one of his epic monologues).
  • Danny and Rachel are the most exhausting OTP since Ted and Robin.
  • Wow, those pics of Danny, Grace and Steve don't look photoshopped - must be behind the scenes pics collected over the years - cute.
  • And another person undergoing cranial surgery without getting her head shaved - because luscious locks are this episode's running gag (and probably because Teilor Grubbs wouldn't have liked that much realism. Also: everybody has to look good on this show - s. random doctor in the hospital).
  • Has anybody ever made a list of all the traumas Grace has been put through?
  • Well, I'm glad we got to hear that Katie's doing fine.... oh, wait...

I think it was the best episode in a while. To tell the truth, considering that plots tend to get more and more ridiculous, I find it hard to get excited about episodes focused on crimes that are in no way connected to the characters; I usually just keep them on in the background. But even most of those which are related to the characters IMO haven't delivered since Chin and Kono left. And it's not even that there's something wrong with Junior and Tani, maybe I find Junior a little boring, but they are alright, it's just that the writing is not good enough anymore to bring the best out of any character. So, for example, I was kind of looking forward to ep 10 and 11, but they were disappointing - plot holes were too big to overlook them, the chemistry between characters/actors wasn't quite the same, all in all they offered nothing that this show hasn't done before, but in a much less entertaining way.

But this one was kind of different. The tension was relatively well done, and I was thankful that both investigations were connected to the characters, because the one about Grace's accident didn't overshadow the one related to Koa's patient too much. Usually, when one of them is random, I just want to fast forward those scenes. Also, I thought they managed to balance the action, the Danny-Rachel/Koa-Tani scenes, and a little bit of Ohana stuff well, and I liked that even with Tani's funny outburst and Steve's "test drive," the action wasn't crazily over the top.

It's true that they forgot about Katie and her father. But I think it makes sense. They only needed them to emphasize that there was something fishy about the accident and to get Grace from being a possible villain in the situation to a hero. But in the end, Katie's father's outburst was understandable under the circumstances and I doubt anyone involved was too bothered, it was more important to show the characters we know interacting with each other.

Yes, and in such a public place, no less. If only one person had filmed this encounter with their cellphone, Tani would be in a world of trouble… oh, wait, this Five-O, they can do whatever the hell they want, and no one is allowed to question their methods.

Too bad little Miss Smug did not get some of that treatment, she was the episode's true villain.

Yes, she's mean and a bully, but at least she didn't force two girls off the road and left them for dead in a ditch. I think the villain crown goes to the driver.

The pics were a mix of CBS PR pics (I think), behind the scenes pics of them as their real selves & not in character, & screencaps from various eps. I recognized those. And at least some of those, including the 1 at/towards the end of the slideshow, where Scott, Teilor & Alex were making screwed up facial expressions, were on show-related social media accounts or on Teilor’s social media accounts—I saw the weird faces pic there.

I was following along on Twitter last night as I watched; especially since they plugged the episode as an event that was happening in its timeslot (besides, I have the CBS app on my phone & I can watch an ep whenever I want if I get distracted). Some of the fans/viewers were wondering if any of the “younger Grace” pics that didn’t obviously look like Teilor were of Scott’s real life daughter, Josie, when she was younger (either with or without Scott in the pic—they could’ve also photoshopped other people in, like Alex & Claire/Rachel); Josie’s 4 now, I think. Kind of like some pics of Alex’s eldest son, Saxon, when he was much younger, were used as some of the pics of “young Steve” in the ep where the Savannah talk show got the Governor’s permission to follow the team around & try to interview them. The fans/viewers probably wondered if some pics might’ve been of Josie since her mom/Scott’s partner, Kacy, has dark hair & I don’t think too many people know what Josie looks like—like if her hair color’s more like Scott’s or Kacy’s.

Yep, my dad was in a bad car accident a few years ago.

I was surprised to see the earrings - also, she likely would have been on a ventilator.

My dad had a severe traumatic brain injury, and they did procedures to relieve pressure - but he never had his head shaved. I think it depends on where they work and what needs to be done.

Panera pagers?! We should have been so lucky. Also, the beautiful, large empty waiting room. Our was tiny and had a TV blaring, plus a gigantic Eastern European family with literally a table full of food (apparently their family member came into the ER at the same time). It was all overwhelming, when you're in a tremendously anxious state, and my mom and I wound up sitting at the elevator bank. So I really envied that room!

Good episode. I would have liked followup on the other girl, though - that was a huge hanging plot thread.

Really the dad of the other girl should had apologized and really bonded with Danny and Rachel.

Not the best episode but really should had followed up in the other girl. That is strike two of misses

But Grace standing up to that bully as she may had gotten it from Danny.  But nearly cost her and her friend's life

Tani being a female version of Steve. Really taking off the badge may had been a good thing. As she went after the person whom her brother's patient had relapsed and beat up her brother. Or wait, Five 0 has immunity and the rules do not apply to them.

Steve driving beware never let him drive. Oh wait he gets car sick.

So sorry Moxie Cat that happened to your father. And really glad he recovered.

Thanks, Long road and lingering issues, but he did for the most part. I was kind of hoping that they would play Grace's injury out over a few episodes, because that kind of recovery is so rarely (or accurately) shown on TV.

I wondered about the hair shaving, too.  Thank you to Moxie Cat for explaining that it doesn't always happen.  I'm glad your dad seems to be okay.

So, we know Lynn's gone, but Danny (nor Steve) never mentioned anything about Melissa being out of the picture.  So what gives, there?  Either shit or get off the Rachel pot, TPTB.  (Personally I would never forgive her for lying about Charlie).

Damn Tani, at least Steve uses excessive force in the basement where there're no camera.  Out in public like that?  And the intimidation of the two guys that wanted to help?  No wonder people have a disrespect for police right now.

Sounds like Will & Grace are still dating.  Is Will in college now?  I thought they were the same age.

Stan & Rachel didn't divorce until S6 or S7.  They tried to work it out, with Rachel flying out some of the time to live in Hawaii when she had partial custody of Grace, but for the most part, Grace lived with Danny.  It looks like she still does, because the address of the house Grace came "home" to was Danny's address - 905.

I have to say, as much as Five-0 tramples on civil rights, Tani beating the dude after "I'm a cop. It's professional" was funny.

We've been talking about the actors over this week - Caan was really good here.

I mean, Five-0 is going to trample over everyone anyway, so at least do a few more like this that are a little more character focused.

Holy hell, Grover gave a look at the Asian girl like he was going to snap her neck.

Someone posted a cut scene, although I can't remember if it was on twitter or another board of what appears to be a cut scene after Grace is in the hospital awake and Katie's father returns.  I assume it is to apologize.  They really need to figure out what scenes to add and what fluff to leave out on this show.  There are some scenes from last season of Scott Caan that ended up on the cutting room floor, which I'm sure makes it appear that he's barely there even when it's his week to film.

Episodes 10 and 11 were filmed out of sequence.  I have no idea why.  I know that was the case for last season's 24 and 25.  I suppose it could be to make allowances for Scott Caan's off weeks.  Episode 11 was filmed around the end of October, I think and 10 was filmed around the week of October 10 or 11.  Episode 12 was filmed around the beginning of November, I think.  Clair's Van der Boom has some instagram pics from something in October with her hair dyed blonde so if the pictures were posted around the time of filming for H50, give or take a few weeks, she might have been wearing a wig to keep character continuity or recently changed her hair color.  I noticed that it was a much lighter brown than her normal hair color and looked very stiff in some scenes.

I remember reading that they filmed the “Cocoon” update (Season Premiere episode) out of sequence too. I’m not sure why though.

I was gonna say maybe eps 10 & 11 were filmed outta sequence due to Teilor’s availability—she lives in LA now & probably goes to either a regular high school or a professional children’s type school & both (especially with having to be at school for mandatory tests/finals, etc.), plus trying to pursue other acting/maybe modeling jobs may not mean she’s available, or it’s harder for her to be available, whenever they want her back in Hawaii to film—then I remembered this was ep 12 (I’m pretty sure), & probably not affected by a switch in production order of the episodes.

I found it funny that Tani’s brother had to explain to the two geniuses that the overdose scene was staged. Did they think that people injecting drugs just leave the needle sticking in their arms? Also you would think that they would remove the tourniquets since that would tend to hinder the drugs from going where they needed to go.

Yes, and in such a public place, no less. If only one person had filmed this encounter with their cellphone, Tani would be in a world of trouble… oh, wait, this Five-O, they can do whatever the hell they want, and no one is allowed to question their methods.

Well you see Tani removed her badge. According to 5-0 logic, as soon as she took her badge off and started whaling on the guy, the restaurant crowd was like "OMG some strange woman is beating a dude up. Where'd that cop go??? She was just here a second ago!!!"

Four lines of dialogue and he was already more useful than Adam.

Lol, I almost expected Steve to tell him "hey, why don't you join 5-0" when they talked at the party for Grace. BTW, weird that he was even there.

Ha! I had the same thought :).

At least he referenced the 'weird family' he'd become a part of at the party - wasn't he part of the Thanksgiving football game too (didn't watch it because it was a Danny-less episode)?

It was interesting that we didn't revisit Grace's friend's father.  He blew up at Danny, was escorted off-site by security/police and we never saw him again.  You would think that he would have been shown coming back and apologizing and acknowledging that Grace was being a good friend to his daughter.

Yeah, speeding up to 80 mph was such a great idea -- he should apologize for getting his girl's legs shattered and giving her a punctured lung.  Why not just tell the bully that she's calling her Uncle Steve?   No way Katie's dad should have apologized.

He accused Grace of driving drunk, which was not the case and should warrant an apology. A panicked teenager with limited driving experience crashing the car is a higher occurrence than it should be, it's kind of hard to pile on Grace. The guy came in the restaurant and was all screaming at her. She grabbed her friend and booked it out of there with him right on their heels. By the time they got to the restaurant, she figured the whole thing was over and done with. She dumped a girl's phone in a drink because she was being mean. It's hard to make the leap to life threatening road rage from there.

One could argue fault at the parents for allowing her to drive at night without more hours behind the wheel.

If the guy accused them of not making sure she was skilled enough to drive, then ok. Obviously, anyone on Five-0 is on the 'right side.' Nuance ain't the show's forte.

While it would have been nice to see Katie’s father apologize, it also would have been nice to see someone acknowledge that Danny would have acted the same way if the situation were reversed.

I didn’t care for the episode at all, but I have a general hatred for cop show episodes where “this time it is personal”.  On this show alone we have had -

  • Grace kidnapped
  • Lou’s daughter kidnapped
  • Chin’s niece kidnapped
  • Duke’s granddaughter kidnapped
  • the entire Grover family hunted down and threatened
  • Will trapped in the hotel (school dance storyline)
  • Grace held hostage twice (the school dance & the storage shed on her scout trip)
  • Danny’s brother (kidnapped? and) murdered
  • Steve’s sister held hostage (or whatever it was)
  • Chin’s wife murdered
  • Kono’s boyfriend/fiancée/husband’s many travails
  • Other things I have forgotten

The actor playing Tani's brother sure is beautiful!  He's actually pretty interesting now that he's not always in a drugged stupor and whiney-yelling at her.

I was glad to see Claire van der Boom back as Rachel.  I've always liked the Rachel character, even though she's a lying liar who lies.  I think it is CvdB's very sympathetic portrayal of Rachel that really sells it for me.  She seems to have mad chemistry with everyone in the cast, but most especially with Scott Caan.  The Danny/Rachel angry, passive-aggressive, snotty, civil, loving, platonic, sniping, supportive mercurial still-sexually-attracted divorced parents relationship they have just really rings true.  Danny really can't quit her, even though she cheated on him with Stan, left him for Stan, took his daughter away across country, tried to do it again, and kept his son from him.  That's a lot of damage on a relationship, but they still are compelled to orbit around each other, even without the kids.  I really would like to see Rachel more often, but I guess Claire van der Boom's schedule is problematic.

I also liked to see the Danny/Steve supportive relationship.  No question, Steven went right into investigation mode to prove Grace's innocence and to find out the truth of what happened.  When Steve came back to the hospital and without a word just joined Danny sitting in despair on the floor was a nice scene.  The scene with the mean girl, her father, Steve, and Lou was perfect, very well acted by all involved.  The mean girl was trying to appear all innocent and naive, but her mean girl kept showing through the cracks, and her fiercely loyal father's horror each time that nastiness peaked through was compelling.  As was Steve's surprise each time the ugliness came out, and his disgust in her, but he shone with pride at Grace's actions.  Lou--who knows full well how nasty teen girls can be to each other was way more skeptical, and pushed hard, and he had that righteous rant.  I do love me some outraged Chi McBride.

That said, other than Tani's pretty, pretty brother and Danny's sexy-rumpled waking up, the styling in this episode seemed a little short.  Claire van der Boom's hair was an atrocious wig, and Teilor Grubb's post-surgical bandage looked like a jaunty little pillbox hat ready to take afternoon tea with the queen in the rose garden.

1) I don't see why not.  She's only got one movie, and that's in post-production.

2) Exactly, and that was why it was so dumb to run, at 80 mph!! on a back-road!!! which could have dead-ended at any point!!!!!!!!  After she exits the restaurant and sees the bully following her, she pulls back into the parking lot and calls Uncle Steve.  A few hours in the Blue Box will cure the bully.

It was 2am.  She might not want to bother him.  Even tho he wouldn’t consider it a bother, that might not be how she sees it.

@Moxie Cat, you nailed it! Mrs. Torqy had a TBI also. She has more hair than Tani and Rachel combined, and kept almost all. They just shaved a strip about 1/2 inch wide around her head for the craniotomy. The waiting room for ICU looked like yours, with sleeping bags even. Crazy!

Random thought: I can't look at Scott Caan's current haircut without seeing Brenda Warner (wife of former Arizona Cardinals QB Kurt Warner.) Google her and see if you agree! LOL

WTF is up with Rachel’s hair?  It’s so bad I kept getting distracted from the story every time she came on.   SO BAD.

It’s also always bothered me that Grace does not look biologically related to either of her parents in this show.  And I’ve felt this way since day 1, but even more now that they cast the son who does look like Danny.

Will & Grace.  Heh.

Enjoyed the episode, but I could do without any more Koa.  Can't stand him.  The look, the hair, the slow dimwitted delivery of his words... meh.  I hope he doesn't get the Adam treatment and become somehow become part of 5-0.

I don’t think all children necessarily look anything/exactly like their parents. Teilor Grubbs does have brownish hair, as does (or did, when she was introduced in the role of Rachel) Claire van der Boom. That works for me, & apparently for the Casting Director & TPTB with the show. I think they just got lucky when they found a kid who supposedly looks as if he could be Scott Caan’s son in real life (& the kid has a twin, but I don’t know if the twin’s identical or fraternal—it seems only 1 actor plays Charlie: he’s billed as Zach Sulzbach, not like Mary Kate Ashley Olsen or Lindsay Sidney Greenbush who were twins sharing the roles of Michelle Tanner on Full House & Carrie Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie & had their combined names in their credits).

Not sure about a wig but I did notice how at the hospital her hair was a light brown/almost blonde and then at the coffee shop and subsequent scenes it was back to a dark brown.

I watched this one a few weeks ago, but did they ever actually state that Katie survived. It seemed that they kind of forgot about her towards the end of the episode, although I wasn't paying perfect attention. If they did forget maybe she died and that is why her dad didn't apologize.

I have never been chased by anyone in a car but it seems like finding a super busy street or driving to a police station would make more sense then driving super fast down a rarely used road.
