In an earlier season when Ali first got her motorized chair, didn't we see Leah transporting it on a little trailer behind her vehicle? What ever happened to that? Seems easier to load maybe than shoving it into the back of an SUV. I guess not important if you aren't planning to actually let Ali use it.

Hearing Leah tell it, Dr. Tsao's warnings were just due to Ali's "allergies".  How can they watch her play baseball/run bases when her legs are all twisted. No wonder poor Ali is tired and has trouble breathing. The energy she must use to try to keep up would be exhausting.  Why don't the people closest to this child feel her pain and stop the madness?  (I know, as we all walk away shaking our heads.)

I think because their idea of what makes a full life is so limited. They think the only worthwhile children's activities are sports related-- and the sports are also limited to ones they are familiar with. If Ali is really interested in sports, I am sure there are wheelchair based ones that she can participate in but, I think, for Leah and Corey, if you can't cheerlead or play-ball what even is the worth of your life? What happened to Ali's choir? Why don't they put her in an art class? I am not super familiar with the range of elementary school activities but I am sure they're not all sports based? My niece is in both a swim team and a chess team-- she's 8 years old (she's a smart kid but not a savant). My 11 year old nephew is student council treasurer. There are a range of things that Ali could do that don't involve her straining her body in this unnecessary way. Why not find out what her strengths are and cultivate them?  I don't understand why Leah and Corey don't get that skipping out on cheerleading isn't depriving Ali of her childhood.

^This, exactly. But Leah can't be bothered. Taking time and effort to research and find activities that would be more suitable is something neither parent seems to want to do. Is it because in doing so they would admit that Ali's disease is incurable? Do they think that would be like admitting defeat? They both think prayer will cure her. Too bad neither can understand that forcing her to run bases is not helping her.

But again, I'm nor surprised. They refuse to use the wheelchair, equip their vehicles so they can transport her safely and consistently and tailor Ali's activities to meet her needs. Holler mentality at work here.

Thank you for the insight. I really did not know how much of a hassle traveling was when a passenger is in a wheelchair.

Now, Leah has publicly used the wheelchair three times that I know of (not counting travel to Dr. Tsao). Twice in airports, and once at the Orlando/Tampa theme parks. The theme parks I will give her some room on- that's a full day of walking and I can see how even someone as negligent as Leah would realize that theme parks are going to be extremely burdensome for Ali to walk through all day. But what was the point of lugging the wheelchair to the airport? You don't walk that much through them, and Leah had that girl running on the beach and running through water parks- probably took a much larger toll on her than an hour walk through airport security would have. That is the reason I concluded Leah thought (perhaps not realistically) that there would be some benefit to bringing the wheelchair (not related of course, to the benefit of Ali not exerting herself).

I agree in general that Leah would rather just not deal with the extra responsibility of traveling with the chair, but I do think she trots it out when she thinks she will get some kind of additional benefit from doing so. Or when she knows she will be judged by not doing so. I would say 90% of the wheelchair use (minimal as it is)  is not for Ali's benefit, but for Leah's.

I don't know what airports you travel through... but the ones I travel through you walk A LOT.  And then there are times when you think you're hanging out near your gate - not at your gate because another flight is scheduled to take off before yours - and then about 30-45 min before your flight you decide to check, because that other flight still hasn't left, and you find out your flight has been changed to a gate that in an entirely different terminal.  Not to mention you're usually carrying 1-2 carry-ons per person. So in my opinion the wheel chair would be VERY helpful in an airport.

I feel that argument is somewhat tainted when you are going to follow up that airport trip with yoga on the beach and a full day of running through water parks.

ETA: my point was not that there is NO benefit to a wheelchair in an airport (which I think was clear from my original post), but that the physical toll of walking through one is still LESS than the other things Leah has freely allowed Ali to do, so why bring the wheelchair for that specific instance? Taking a wheelchair through an airport and then not using it for the rest of the trip (Leah posted many pictures on instagram of Ali running around at various times in CA) is weird to me.

Tatum was pointing out how Ali walks and runs constantly whereas in an airport she would likely not be exerting herself as much. Sure, there is walking in any airport and some airports are huge such as LAX and you may walk for quite a distance, but considering how much Ali is allowed to be WITHOUT her wheelchair at home (five days a week her chair is at school, not at her home) walking around in an airport for an hour pales in comparison.

Ali using her wheelchair 24/7 would be VERY helpful to her. Not just in an airport.

I read it as she sometimes rents a van to MOVE Ali's wheelchair. Which makes me wonder why she doesn't get rid of one of her two vehicles and buy one that accommodates Ali's wheelchair. It seem as though Ali doesn't use her wheelchair too often if Leah has to rent a van just to transport it.

(Not a defense of Leah in general, but...) I read it as her actually only owning one car/mini-van but saying she owns two vehicles: her regular vehicle and Ali's wheelchair.  So, the laughing was in response to people thinking she has an impressive fleet in her driveway...?

Leah has been shown driving more than one vehicle. Not counting the rental van. It has been commented here a few times why is it she owns two vehicles (or more?) when she is a single person.

I'm not surprised. They will be encouraging Ali to play sports until she is unable to move because a life without sports is "deprivation". I don't even think Ali wants to play, but she knows how happy it makes her parents/family so she probably fights through the pain. Poor girl- NOT because she has MD, but because her family is encouraging her to do things that are harmful!

Why can't they get Ali a regular non power wheelchair right use for things when they "can't" bring the power wheelchair? I mean the kind that folds and fits easily in any trunk. Is there ANY reason why they couldn't, at least, do that? I really don't know.

Because that would make too much sense.

I asked that question long ago here and the responses I received were, Ali needed to learn to be self-sufficient by becoming accustomed to her chair and maneuver herself around, especially if she was going to be using the chair for the most part while in school. It would give her freedom without having to rely on others to push her.

Well, sure. But isn't it better to preserve her muscles and at least attempt to show they give some sort of a fuck about following Dr Tsao's orders? (I know you probably agree, so this is more rhetorical.) This is just a last resort thing since Leah, apparently, can't/won't accommodate the power chair on a regular basis.

It's not about preserving her muscles, because that can't be done.  She could be carried everywhere and the disease would do what it is going to do.  At this point it's about her not getting injured, by falling down or oh, I don't know, being hit in the head with a baseball.  She isn't doing any harm to her muscles by walking more, but her joints are obviously taking too much stress.  So it's about collateral damage now.  I'm sure all of this has been explained several times to Leah and Cory, but did they hear it?  Were they bright enough to understand it?

Yes, I do agree :-).

If the motorized wheelchair was an issue with Leah having to haul it around, not being able to get it in the SUV, etc. then why not use a wheelchair? We know the answer. Leah and company don't want Ali to be seen as a special needs child. She wants Ali to be seen as her sister and the rest of the kids. To have Ali be in any kind of wheelchair, motorized or not, she is seen as being different.

You got it. Decades of medical research, education, and experience, and the achievement of being the top specialist in the WORLD just cannot compare to a mother's intuition.

And if Ali's needs just happen to line up with whatever is most convenient or comfortable for Leah...well that is entirely a coincidence.

I watched this tragedy for the first time in like two years and I can't believe these Mountain Dew-tooth hicks still have this child running around without a wheelchair. Is the excuse still, "the other kid broke it, we'll get it fixed?" Because that's the excuse you give your niece when she comes over to play and is disappointed that the Barbie Powerwheels Jeep is sitting in the basement collecting laundry. Not an actual tool for your child's livelihood, Leah and Cory. What the hell.

I see more defenseless animals have made it to their imminent deaths at the American Horror Story known as Aleeeeah. She's definitely the toll booth operator on the Rainbow Bridge to hell.

Their excuse is, she has been physically able to walk longer than what the original specialist predicted (which may not even have been Dr. Tsao, I believe this prediction took place many years ago, perhaps before her diagnosis was what it is now), which Corey and Leah have credited entirely to them "not giving up" on walking. Their assumption is, if they let her get comfortable using her chair, she'll no longer want to walk, and if she does decide down the road to try walking again, she won't be able to after months in her chair. They seem to think as long as she can walk, she should, and numerous falls and general discomfort be damned.

On top of the risk of injury, they are teaching her that her chair is something to be dreaded and avoided, and that walking with pain > riding in comfort. Assholes, both of them.  And throw in Poppa Jeff for encouraging this mess.

My son's was free.  No questions asked, no paperwork.  It was a company/organization-I really don't know- that came to my parents house one Saturday and hooked him up with the machine, tubing, and mouth pieces.  It was supposed to be about $75, which I left with my parents, but when I got off work they handed it back and said the people said "no charge".  I was at work that Saturday and my parents were babysitting so I'm unclear on all the details.

Anyway, I do think they have at least one now.  We saw her use it in the office and Leah told Cory about the prescription for Albuterol during their phone call.

I think the fixing the wheelchair thing may have had as much to do with logistics as money. It can take months to get someone out to fix one properly, and I can't imagine there are that many wheelchair repair-trained folks in the holler. You also usually need an insurance claim from a doctor first. I can't imagine Leah being willing to put up with all that red tape rather than lying around taking Instagram pics and it's another convenient excuse for Leah and Corey to not have her use it and then say it's because she's 'so determined.' If I am remembering correctly, Dr. Tsao said to Leah the hospital could have made arrangements to ensure Ali was given a temporary wheelchair while her own chair was being fixed. Doctors know those things can happen and usually children hospitals are in contact with agencies that can temporarily supply a family with a much-needed item such as a wheelchair. Children's Hospital of Los Angeles has this in place this for children who come from families whose parents are cash-strapped or are given a temporary chair until the insurance approves one.

Even if that wasn't the case, Leah and Cory have the means to have rented a chair while Ali's chair was being fixed. Another thing, they could demand their other kids stay off the fucking chair and not break it because it is not a fucking toy.
