Catherine Rollins recruits McGarrett and Jerry to help her track down a uranium deposit thought to be hidden on an abandoned Hawaiian island before a suspected terrorist can make dirty bombs with it. Also, when Junior falls and is trapped in a ravine, he reflects on his estranged relationship with his father.

Original Airdate: April 13, 2018

Junior and Tani have a really good chemistry (of the platonic kind and hopefully that remains so). Did we know about Junior's sister before this episode? Loved the Lassie joke.

Poor Jerry, still stuck in the basement. I had been hoping that the fire department inspector (or whatever his title was) would get him out of there on safety grounds. Oh, well. Had to laugh when Steve wound that strap around Catherine's arm and made it look like a tourniquet. It was a scratch that needed disinfecting and some band aid (and I'm sure Jerry's fanny/butt pack contained a medical kit) not a grubby bit of gear. The banter was okay even if they were using Catherine as Ersatz-Danny.

Oh, and are we supposed to think that Adam offed his half-sister? Because that would require a level of competence he hasn't managed to conjure up so far.

So it took months for them to identify the guy that shot Danny and let's be honest they lucked into that. Because DNA and fingerprints work differently in the 5-0 world. But Duke can identify Adam's never before seen shadow sister while she is still in the ocean so like 5 minutes. She for sure isn't in the system they only had a sibling match to Adam. Even if they did run the DNA to match to the murder of whoever from 3 episodes ago she should on an autopsy table.

Sorry Junior but your tearful recording to your father was not as emotional as you wanted it. You just aren't there yet buddy. I thought they were bringing back his random prom date but I guess its his sister. Why can't anyone have nice normal loving parents/families. Steve's mom sucks, Tani's brother is a dick, Danny's brother was a criminal.

TV cops come in three flavors: those who are estranged from one or more (criminal) family members, those who are avenging the death of one or more family members, and those who are following in the footsteps of LEO family members.   No one ever has a nice, normal, happy, healthy family.

It seems like this season we have seen very little of the whole gang working together.  And it seems like, other than the two episodes where he was front and center, Lou is spending most of his time at the office.

I think it was a fun episode, especially compared to the rest of this season. I wasn't too engaged in the "crime," but the interactions were alright for the first time in a bit. Or, at least they were there. Catherine's comeback was much better than the last one, I liked the awkwardness between her and Steve, and Lou's reaction to her coming to them was fun too. As for Jerry, I miss him having his out-of-nowhere hero moments, I like it less when he's just a nerd with silly conspiration theories.

I still can't believe so much went wrong with Adam's storyline. I was really looking forward to it, in the absence of Kono and Chin. I don't mind that he seems to be making a lot of dumb mistakes, though it's also a bit out-of-character, he was way better at those things before. But the weird thing is where it's all coming from. For me, he used to be a good match for Kono, they were both calm and had the ability to stay so in difficult situations. And his reactions in the current season aren't believable at all. I'm all for showing that people have trouble dealing with things that happened. But he was kidnapped multiple times, his life was in danger once in every ten episodes (at least), so why show his mad driving with flashbacks now. Also, him saying that his half-sister deserves much worse than prison didn't sound like him either. He dealt with enough organized crime masterminds (who did much worse than killing Jessie, like trying to kill Kono, killing his father, etc.) and I don't remember him ever saying something like this. I mean, he didn't even care so much about killing Wo Fat, has becoming a "good guy" made him worse? I hope they are just trying to make us believe that he killed his new sister, him actually doing it would really make it even dumber.

(By the way, I know it has more to do with the previous episode, but it only occurred to me now - does what he said to Jessie about the money even make sense? He didn't know about them until recently and it didn't seem like him and Kono were in any danger anymore because of his family's unfinished business...)

Adam has made a lot of dumb mistakes. And it seems the show is setting it up for his demise or something. Really they could had written him much better. Really trusted the wrong people.

Steve and Catherine catching up while their lives were on the line. Really love them. But that was far too cliche

Jerry as Indiana Jones LOL but felt bad when he found out the treasure was all fake

But really think that Adam and Kono both need a happy ending like that of Chin and his niece now his adopted daughter.

Lou is so funny. Love him with Steve. Love McGrover than McDanno even more and funnier.

But give this 7/10!

Props to Jerry for not burning the whole bunker down (and exploding all those shells) when he found out spiders had dropped on him. I guess they startled him and he's not really an arachnophobe. Because if he was he would have checked that cave first before going in there.

I feel like although Catherine could have called upon her CIA resources but she went to 5-0 not out of any fondness for Steve but rather because she knows 5-0 isn't bound by any rules and neither is she while she's under their protection.

I had a feeling Adam was more gangsta than he looked. And who among 5-0 hasn't murdered someone who kinda-sorta deserved it? I guess Tani and Junior haven't yet but they'll get there. And Jerry doesn't pack heat but I do recall him slamming into bad guys with a delivery van once.

I am not at all famililar with Honolulu but the geography in this episode seems a little strange to me. Junior leaves from Steve's house to go for his run. He falls down in some wilderness area which is presumably nearby and Eddie goes back to 5-0 HQ rather than going back to Steve's house. I know Tani said Eddie was dehydrated implying he traveled quite a ways but something doesn't line up unless Junior is driving out to some wilderness area to go for his run.

Same here. But tv shows are notorious to play fast and loose with geography. And with a show located in Hawaii you have to throw in the occasional landscape porn to make the sponsors happy. I think Junior's running ground was around Koolau Range - not that far away from Honolulu  But it still has me wondering how Eddie managed to get from there to 5-0 HQ navigating the city and its traffic.

If Adam didn't quit, what exactly would his job have been? He got his partner killed like two weeks after she was hired, due to his own stupidity.  He has NO idea who's doing any of the bad stuff and had not one clue where to start in terms of hunting down this mystery person who's gotten the best of him at every turn. He's not proactive. He just reacts to situations.  And he continues not to learn his lesson by only letting the team know AFTER everything has gone FUBAR, because all of his previous plans worked out so well!

He would have done less damage and gotten more done just sitting and eating shrimp at Kamekona's.

I agree with almost everything, but I don't think that he got his partner killed. Steve is right that she made her own choice that got her killed.

And when he met her it was only after her police inside man took him and she had multiple bodyguards standing close.  She doesn't seem like the type to take foolish chances without a plan (basically the opposite of Adam) so what sort of scenario would mean he got her alone long enough to kill her and dump her body?  Or did he get the bodyguards too or did he hire a hit team through his "bank manager"?  If she has the money she got what she wanted and I can't even think of a reason she'd want to see Adam again.  Of all the possibly scenarios the "Adam killed his sister all by himself" plot is the least believable.  Of course that brings up the question if he didn't what did he want that alibi for - which is exactly what the show wants us to think and wonder about.

Juniors down a well was an OK subplot, I don't hate or love the guy.  Jerry put fun in the main plot but I have to say - there is no amount of money per episode that show could pay me that would entice me to do that scene with the spiders.  Honestly that would have been my line in the sand....Use fake spiders, do something else or fire me but I ain't doin it.........Oddly though if it were my scene and they wanted it with snakes I'd have agreed.  But creepy crawlies --- Nope!

Didn't Adam go back to the "banker" and said he needed a favor? Perhaps he arranged a hit on the half-sister.

Actually, after he said "I need a favor", the banker said something like "what" and Adam said "An alibi".

Yes, that points more towards Adam killing the half-sister. However, I'm wondering if he (Adam) has the wherewithal to pull that off, especially when she seems to be surrounded by her goons.

Thought this was a rather terrible episode. I'd be fascinated to know just how much show writers get paid because on this evidence it's waaay too much. Totally disjointed storylines, each as annoying as the others.

I really don't understand the point of bringing Catherine back for this - her coupling with Steve, which once held some credibility at least and, on their break up, real emotional angst, should not be revisited if everyone (except Lou - Lou's reactions were really the *only* thing I liked this week) just shrugs and jokes. Hated it.

As everyone seems to agree, the Adam storyline is beyond ridiculous. If they wanted to keep the actor he could have been used so much better as a consultant within the team - what a waste.

And I love dogs myself but the whole Eddie/Lassie to the rescue thing was a cliche too far ... just, no.

It's just my opinion, but the angst stuff is no longer cute when you're pushing 40 or older and especially on a procedural show.  It was nice for the fans of Catherine and MB to see her again, but I don't understand the need to bring her back for only one episode a year, unless they are working around her schedule.  At the least PL has another show that films on the mainland that her character could be used in more if she doesn't have time to make the flights to film regularly in Hawaii.

I sometimes wonder if the EP and writer's know what direction to go in, but I have to say this season has been entertaining and I've enjoyed it more than I thought I would.  I guess having the two recruits has renewed my interest in the show.  I thought I would be less interested with Chin and Kono leaving, but I'm more interested this season.  I don't know if they will be renewed for another since they are probably in contract negotiations, but I'll see if I'm still as interested next season provided it's renewed

The alibi for Adam could be a number of different things. I agree with everyone's comments that he could not have pulled it off on his own, although I don't know how they could have had a believable plot line giving his fumbling. If, indeed, the half-sister was the one who had Jessie killed and took the 20 million. But, what it the Gardener/Bonsai Banker had his own hit men intercept Jessie, kill her, and return the 20 million to him? Plus, if Adam was using the 20 million to pay off debts or interests for his deceased father, how did he make those payments prior to finding the money on Lanai? He was out of the Yakuza when he and Kono left for Japan, and he didn't find the money for some time after that.  He explained that you have to give up everything when you leave the Yakuza. Also, 20 million in 100 dollar bills would weigh about 420 pounds. I don't remember if they showed the exact number of duffel bags thrown into the back of Adam's Dodge, I thought I only saw 2, and he and Jessie were handling them like they were very light. The 20 million seemed to be a "deus ex machina" as it had never been mentioned before he showed up at the gardener's place with Jessie. Oh well, I'll keep watching.

I have the feeling a renewal is coming. Right before the end of the season, the show & a charity group--I think children-related, somehow--announced a contest, or auction, with at least something to do with Children's Hospital LA, with the big prize being the winner gets to fly to Hawaii & have lunch with the cast (on the set, I think). Considering they finished filming for the season a week or so ago (actually around the same time they announced the contest winner), the only way they'll be able to fulfill that, the way they intended, now is if they do it during filming next season--ergo, there will probably/most likely be a Season 9. They really can't do the lunch now, during the hiatus, because nobody's probably in Hawaii--not even Alex, or anybody else who lives there; everybody's off on a vacation, or on a staycation, or maybe even working on another project or projects.

Another reason I really think there'll be another season is, all/pretty much all of those websites that attempt to predict whether a TV show will get renewed or canceled had the show as being "more likely than not (however they say phrases like that on their individual websites) to be renewed for the next fall season by the end of this spring season" all the way from the start of this season through the last time those websites were updated. That, if you remember, hasn't happened since S1; for all of the seasons between S1 & this season, all the cancellation predictor sites had the show as either having "a 50-50 chance of being renewed for the next season", or "more likely than not to be canceled by the end of the season involved", however the sites word it. None of them had the show, however they word it, as being "a safe bet for renewal" until right before, or right after, CBS actually renewed it.

And, of course, there's Alex's most recent interview where he said that he'd been undergoing stem cell treatments in an effort to help a bad back injury he apparently incurred while trying to do a stunt (or an accumulation of stunts) that he should've left to his stunt double, & that he's also been doing rehab type workouts (on equipment he put in his garage) since taking the stem cell treatments & he feels better than he has, & can move better than he was able to before the treatments; &, after telling an Australian newspaper (during S7) he thought he'd be ready to quit playing McGarrett at the end of S8 (the current season, & apparently the last on Alex's current contract), so as to still be able to do physical things with his sons now, & with his grandchildren in the future, he now thinks he's physically able to play McGarrett for a 9th season (& possibly at least 1 more after that), if CBS can come up with the right deal.

If CBS & Alex can come to terms, then I think we'll get an S9. Even if it means Alex starts doing a disappearing act 1 out of every few eps, like Scott's been doing since, I think, the season before his daughter was born, as part of a new deal with Alex, to try to maintain the better health he seems to have regained since his stem cell treatments.

I really don't see Alex making really outrageous, "diva" type demands though, for example akin to DDK & Grace P demanding to be paid the same as Alex & Scott, per episode, for this season [& Grace P actually wanting to be paid the same, per episode, as Alex & Scott, but wanting to get that salary equality for doing less than half--more like a quarter--of this season's eps, & then being written out of the show after that], & I don't even think Alex & Scott actually have salary parity with each other; even if you include whatever percentage of the show's profits either or both has on top of their salary per episode. As far as I know, Scott started with a salary a few thousand dollars below Alex in S1 & I don't think he's ever pulled even with Alex, even if both have a percentage of the show's profits.

Long answer is long... Sorry about that!

So Junior falls down, he hurts his leg, he manufactures some type of splint in order to climb up to a mini ledge to grab his phone, yet he can't manufacture a way to get all the way out?  Instead he wastes valuable cell battery life taking selfies and looking at old pictures?  Doesn't seem really smart in my opinion.

Wasn't there some sort of flashback with Junior and his prom date?  Wasn't that his old girlfriend?  Or was that girl really his sister and we just all kind of assumed it was an old girlfriend?  Maybe they are two separate people and I'm just mixing it up.

Waiting for Tani and Junior to hook up.  Seems like it's going to happen.  When is the last time a platonic friend stopped by unannounced with coffee and dog treats?

Certainly seems like they want us to think that Adam offed the half sister to get the money back.  So he goes from bumbling idiotic fool who can't get anything right to all of a sudden some sinister mastermind?  Right...  He can't head off to Texas or wherever Kono is holed up soon enough.

The Catherine return was so out of the blue and not sure what is happening there.  Are they really intending to bring her back?  So now we'll have Tani and Catherine?  Who is that Lynn woman again that Steve was keeping it casual with?  I don't remember her at all.

He still had the money when he was back from Japan/Canada. I think that he was only really in the Yakuza for a brief period when his father was kidnapped/killed*, then, after Steve and Kono convinced him not to kill Wo Fat, he was cleanish for a while with occasional get togethers with bad guys (for business). But Kono told him that it's not good enough for her and that his business will always be dirty, so he decided to sell it. There, the problems started because the guy whose name I don't remember said that he can only leave the business like his father started it - with nothing. While the business was possibly tied to the Yakuza in countless ways, I think that at that point Adam wouldn't say that he was "leaving the Yakuza." Only after Gabriel took the money and Adam killed two Yakuza guys and put himself in prison, he was really without the money. But still, it was quite a long time ago and I wonder how he would manage not to get himself and Kono killed then. Maybe he was just keeping the money for lolz but he had to explain it somehow to Jessie.

*Now that I'm thinking about it, maybe he was never really good at this? I've just remembered how he desperately tried to get the information about his father out of Joe White, but his attempts were pretty pathetic too. I guess he was unexperienced then though.

Adam just seemed to stumble around in the dark and was basically ten steps behind everyone else.

I believe the favor/alibi conversation was to throw us off and make us think Adam killed her, but no way he was able to outsmart her enough to get her alone, and making him a murderer doesn't seem like a wise move for a main character. Not only that, but another season of Adam behind bars would not be a fun time.

Agreed, it was stupid to leave her with the money. But I still think that in this case, Adam can be blamed for being dumb, and Jessie for being dead.

I  think that Junior's story was a 5-0 version of the Magnum P.I. episode Home From The Sea. Just transfer the lost surf ski  and having to survive in the ocean to a broken leg on a mountain.

Will they time jump to heel his leg? Maybe Scott Caan can step in to fill his role.

Quick question for east coasters: did we lose part of this episode due to a news break about Syria? A friend who watches said he tuned in about halfway through and only saw Syria stuff for awhile, and then turned it off after the episode didn't seem likely to return. Just wondering if I should watch what my DVR recorded or if I'll have to track down the episode somehow else.

It started about 15 minutes late but the whole episode aired so it ended 15 minutes into the Blue Bloods time slot.

Yes, there was a flashback with Junior & a girl who appeared to be his prom/other school "dressy" type dance date; Junior's father might've been in it too, at least vocally. They seemed to be talking about the prom/dance they seemed to be going to, & taking pics (mostly of Junior & the girl); at some point, I think I remember at least Junior & the girl talking about his apparently upcoming, sooner rather than later, entrance into the Navy for training. I think it was supposed to have been Junior going because of 9/11, & it was probably supposed to be just general training; not straight into BUD/s (SEAL training). It was in 1 of Junior's first eps, I'm pretty sure.

I'm pretty sure Tani & Junior are supposed to end up a couple at some point. In the ep where Danny was shot while the team was under hospital quarantine from exposure to an illness or something else in another ep, & they were waiting for Lou & some other people to get them out of isolation (I think Danny's assailant had left explosives attached to the door, so they couldn't just walk outta there, & they did need outside help to get Danny into surgery quickly), Danny was also seeing his life at different points in the future (kinda like Steve imagining what everybody's lives would've been like if his Dad hadn't been murdered & the late Governor Jameson hadn't had a reason to ask Steve if he'd be interested in heading her anti-crime task force which eventually became Five-0).

Among the things Danny saw was an older, but still a fairly young adult, version of his son, Charlie, graduating from the HPD Police Academy. Besides Steve & Danny being there, so were Tani & Junior. They were behaving like they were married, it seemed like; at 1 point, I think Junior even called her "Mrs. Reigns" (or they called each other "Mr. & Mrs."). We also found out that Tani was apparently the head of the Five-0 task force at that time; I think she tried to recruit Charlie for Five-0.

As far as most people know, this is Catherine's only appearance this season, & she's not coming back on a regular basis... just doing an ep here & there, like the last few seasons.

Lynn was the blonde lady who was some kind of counselor, or something, with "at risk" kids. I think she's also supposed to be a friend of the local female Prosecutor with the Australian accent whose dad was murdered during a robbery at the bar he owned & they lived over, & whose case (finding out who murdered her dad) was taken over by Five-0 as it was still unsolved at the time of John McGarrett's murder.

Lynn was also the person who accidentally hit Steve in the eye, on Valentine's Day, with her shoe when she was supposed to be doing a striptease for him (they had started sleeping together by this point). And Lynn helped Danny's girlfriend, Melissa, plan a secret weekend for the couples to spend Valentine's Day, the year after the Ill-fated striptease, on a "staycation" with each other in a local resort on Waikiki Beach, where Steve & Danny don't seem to be enjoying the activities arranged by the girlfriends, & Steve & Danny appear to have more fun with each other.

Last Friday, in the East & Midwest, the President's statement on the latest Syria bombing by a group of Allied Nations, including the US, started airing in the space for the commercial break between MacGyver & H50. It ran long enough to pre-empt H50's first, 15 minutes in the East & Midwest; but when the statement ended, CBS started H50 from the beginning (like they do/might do, instead of joining it in mid-episode, like usually happens during football season). So the ep aired in full, with a start time delay of almost 15 minutes (I think) in the Eastern & Central time zones. Which means, unless the DVR was set to run long, you probably don't have the last 15 minutes of the ep.

Now that you mention it, you make a good point.

That didn't even cross my mind until I came here. If that's even remotely true, then that's the most patently ridiculous plot in the entire show. Basically, what I'm getting is that the show didn't want to pay the Asian-American leads, let them walk, promoted another Asian-American actor to regular, but either 1 - didn't know what to do with him so made a mess of a plot or 2 - deliberately sabotaged him so we don't like him and think he's an idiot.

1 - didn't know what to do with him so made a mess of a plot or 2 - deliberately sabotaged him so we don't like him and think he's an idiot.

It wouldn't be the first time this show did that with a storyline or a character.  I can think of at least a couple of actors they've made regulars and then had nowhere to go with their storylines and characters.

If Eddie could find his way back to 5-0 headquarters, then he could have led Tani right back to Junior. I think he chose not to because Junior ate his dog biscuit.

Animals can find their way to familiar [laces, and Eddie's been to 5-0 quite a bit, but he may not have been to the same location as where Junior fell that much.  I like that they subverted the obvious Lassie comparison.  Eddie went to 5-0 because it was "home", not to convey a message, and he only lead Tani to the approximate location.

I don't think he even led Tani anywhere. She said she knows where Junior usually runs and was going to start there. When she found him she said she was looking for over 2 hours.

Lou is so funny. Love him with Steve. Love McGrover than McDanno even more and funnier.

I very much enjoyed him shaking his head behind Catherine's back - looking out for his buddy like good bro code dictates. :-)

I enjoy McGrover more than McDanno. Because it is not bickering or mean spirited. Bickering in the right kind of way. They are like brothers. As it is all in good fun.
