Probably all characters that are either original, not from GA/Flash comics but other ones. SPTV has a lot of weirdly worded user polls and they've done a lot on the Arrowverse recently, I guess it's good click bait, especially if you can get an OTA/Felicity vs LL war going (very few care about NTA even there).

Ant-Man and the Wasp is doing well at the box office so far this weekend...

Happy to hear this. I really liked Ant-Man and the Wasp. It was a great way to recuperate with some fun after the darkness and angst of Infinity War.

Spoiler

Until the post credits scene. FUCK YOU THANOS!!!!

Apparently it had a big Friday opening and then dropped a little, but still out-performed the first Ant-Man movie...

'Ant-Man and the Wasp' Buzzes to #1 While 'Incredibles 2' Tops $500 Million

It's another Disney-led weekend as Ant-Man and the Wasp claims the weekend's #1 spot. This marks the tenth time this year a film based on a Marvel comic character has topped the weekend box office. Also releasing this week, Universal and Blumhouse's The First Purge is the latest success in the now, four-film franchise, Roadside's documentary Whitney fell just shy of a spot in the weekend top ten and Annapurna's Sorry to Bother You was a smashing success in limited release. Disney's success this weekend also doesn't end with just the #1 film at the box office as Incredibles 2 became the first animated title to ever top $500 million at the domestic box office.

As we enter the second half of the year, and the 27th weekend of 2018, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has now claimed the #1 spot at the weekend box office nine times. The latest is this weekend's release of Ant-Man and the Wasp, the 20th installment in the MCU, which debuted with an estimated $76 million over the three-day weekend, out-performing 2015's Ant-Man by nearly $20 million.

One interesting caveat to the film's domestic performance, however, is just how big the film's Friday was compared to the rest of the weekend. Ant-Man and the Wasp's Friday gross accounted for 44.5% of its overall weekend gross, that's the largest in MCU history, ahead of Avengers: Age of Ultron (44.1%) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (43.39%). However, before that's considered an issue, while Ultron only delivered a 2.4x multiplier, Homecoming delivered a 2.86x multiplier, the sixth best in the franchise, and the first Ant-Man enjoyed a healthy 3.15x multiplier. Ant-Man and the Wasp received a "A-" CinemaScore from opening weekend audiences, just a notch down from the "A" for Ant-Man, and 55% of the overall audience was male while 58% of the overall audience was over the age of 25. While the gender demographics are relatively similar to the first Ant-Man, the audience for the sequel did skew a bit older, as 48% of the overall audience for the first film was age 25 or older.

Looking ahead, should Ant-Man deliver on the average 2.75x multiplier for a film in the MCU we're looking at a domestic performance around $209 million or so while a performance on the lower end would be closer to $180 million.

Psychology and Shipping: Factors that Influence Character Pairings

What ships would you go down for? Do you ever wish your shows or fandoms would give you the couple you want to stay up all night writing slash fiction about? "Shipping" is used to describe when fans put characters together (a pair, trio, or group) into a relationship. These relationships are often romantic but can also refer to platonic groupings. These "ships" can come in many forms, including "slash" relationships (often same-sex, such as Kirk/Spock), a symbol connecting the names (such as Kylo Ren + Rey), hybrid names or fandom specific terms (such as Stony for Steve Rogers and Tony Stark), and even the OTP (one true pairing, such as Spuffy to refer to Spike and Buffy). These relationships can be canon or simply fan endorsed. One of the most interesting components of these ships is that they often defy social norms and can be seen as taboo. Same-sex, polyamorous, interspecies, and rivalry relationships are often presented and discussed with the same love and affection often reserved for heterosexual couples in most other forms of media. Given the amount of time spent on these pairings and the spending and viewing power of "shippers," a research study was conducted by April Fugett, Ph.D., Keith W. Beard, Psy.D. (professors of psychology, Marshall University), Britani Black, M.A., and Carrie Dean, M.A. (doctoral students, Marshall University) that examined several psychological theories in conjunction with participant characteristics to explore their impact on over 150 "ships" from across a variety of types of ships, genres, and pop culture references. The results demonstrate how psychological factors inform character combination preferences. This can influence marketing toward certain outlets and specific groups, such as the LGBTQ populations. It can also provide information regarding individuals' leisure time activities and hobbies.

Major venting by a comics fan (this article is very long, so I only quoted portions)...

BATMAN #50 Aftermath – Where’s My Honeymoon?
By Dispatchdcu - July 10, 2018
https://www.monkeysfightingrobots.co/batman-50-aftermath-wheres-my-honeymoon/

Quote

Do we blame New York Times? Well, let’s face it: you don’t have to read the article to get spoiled. They did a fantastic job ruining the issue with the title alone. However, we find out later that John Cunningham, DC’s Senior Vice President of Sales, responded to a private comic retailer on Facebook in an article from CBR. In summary, DC Comics was aware of what they were doing and intended to spoil BATMAN #50.
*  *  *
[Tom] King appeared upset and had no idea, but I have a hard time believing that the creator of this story, who went on Late Night with Seth Meyers promoting the issue, had no clue this was going to happen.  The blame needs to be shared across the board. New York Times should have never put the outcome of the issue as the title of the article. That’s just bad taste.
*  *  *
DC Comics could have found other ways to promote the issue with traditional media without spoiling the story; such as interviews with King, interviews with artists on the book throughout the years, as well as discussions with DC executives.
*  *  *
Honestly, I don’t know. But, I know where you shouldn’t direct it; at your Comic Shop. After talking to my local shop, they said that they were lucky to break even. BUT, one of the owners followed up by saying that they  EXPECTED to make a massive profit off of BATMAN #50 and now they didn’t. Heck, some stores threw parties and ordered wedding cake for Midnight releases. Take a look at this article of a release party at Infinity Flux.
*  *  *
DC was trying to find a way to expand their company in a way that benefits them. Comic sales are not doing as well as fans may think. If DC doesn’t adapt, they may be in trouble. Comic shops need to adjust, or they’ll be gone too. If the stores didn’t exist, more comics would be sold at Walmart and other large department and bookstores. Why do you think DC is putting the 100-page comics at Walmart? They’re testing the waters for the future.
*  *  *
DC knew from preorders who was buying and will crunch the numbers on whether or not this publicity stunt hurt or not.  We shall see when the sales numbers come out.  But overall, this was just an experiment for the future. And I bet as a whole; sales were at least the same. But, many individual shops took some hits.
*  *  *
King gave us a proposal in issue 24 and spent 26 issues (off and on), as well as an annual and special wedding issues, for the Bat and Cat to NOT get married. King spent a year’s worth of storytelling to lead up to an event that was never going to happen. And he knew it and wasted our time.  We had wedding one-shots of bachelor parties, deciding who the best man would be, suit fittings, and issues dedicated to dresses for no wedding. I hate to say cash grab but what else were the extra issues for?

We were given dating issues and arcs about wedding gifts. We were given long-winded proposals and fights with ex-girlfriends, all for nothing. A year’s worth of stories for NOTHING. Now many would say, “You can’t honestly think they were going to get married?” And to all of you, I say; yes! I’ve read every issue of King’s run, and it led me to that very conclusion as I’m sure it did for many others.
*  *  *
Sure, legally it wouldn’t make sense. Bruce can’t marry a criminal and alter egos can’t get marriage licenses. But the wedding, the feeling, and the emotions could all happen without it being “legal.” I feel tricked for the sake of being tricked. More importantly, this issue shakes faith in DC, REBIRTH, and its direction for the future.

I feel like DC, in general, has lied about the purpose of REBIRTH. In an interview from The Hollywood Reporter back in May 2016, Geoff Johns said he was going to bring back hope and optimism to the DC universe. What’s more hopeful than love? Marriage?
*  *  *
I’m sorry, but I can’t wait for 50 more issues. You just gave us about 26 issues that amounted to nothing. Literally nothing. Are you going to give us a wedding at 100 or just another bait and switch? I’m sorry but 50 more issues from a writer I can’t trust and a company where my faith is shaken, maybe a bit too much.

How do I know you’ll get to finish 100 issues and tell your entire story? How do I know DC’s direction won’t change? You had 50 issues to tell your story which is more than most writers ever get. But, somehow that wasn’t enough. YOU NEED MORE?

The spoiling hurt the comic book shop sales. But even if it wasn't spoiled comic sales would've taken a hit after that. Not many are going to want to read 50 more issues of nothing happening.  We could've finally had a different story and seen Batman and Catwoman as a married couple. I'm sure we could've seen Batman be happy for a bit and been okay with it. I'm sure something would've happened to make him grumpy and moody again. Or you Batman being a hero would still want to save the city he loves because that's what he does. Having a wife wouldn't change that. Instead they choose to keep the characters standing still and never growing up.

I haven't bought a comic in years and was going to for the wedding.  Now I know they are still not worth it.

DC Explains Why They Spoiled Batman’s Wedding
By CAMERON BONOMOLO - July 1, 2018
http://comicbook.com/dc/2018/07/02/batman-50-spoilers-batrimony-DC-Comics-explains/

Quote

DC Comics have a five-point explanation for spoiling Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle’s wedding in Batman #50 via The New York Times Sunday morning ahead of the book’s July 4 street date.

John Cunningham, Senior Vice President of Sales for DC Comics, wrote the following on a local comic shop retailer Facebook group:

“1. DC Sales strongly advocated getting the news out ahead of the OSD, so that the Moment of Realization did not occur hours before events began. We even did our level best to try and spoil it here on this page over and over again (and failed). The NY Times article was posted here at 630 a.m. PST not out of “Pride” — please — but to get you the information as soon as we could.

2. In the abstract, we believed the news would break on Monday morning, given the arrival time of physical copies in store and the reality that a copy or a scan would end up being passed to uncontrolled comic book outlets (much like Marvel’s wedding issue last week and every other major comic book event in the lat decade).

3. As mentioned here before, any discussion about financial remedies for problematic DC product must occur after the product is on sale.

4. While The Times piece is more fulsome that [sic] some might like, it does not spoil the shock ending of the book for fans. We’re working on getting this posted here for you.

5. I stand by my belief that BATMAN #50 is one of the best single issue periodicals of the last decade, that it is a special moment in comic book history, and that if it’s not the book we (think) we want, it’s the book we need.”

I think it was spoiled because someone with DC clued into the fact that everyone was expecting them to get married, including the aforementioned shop parties, and would be PISSED that it wasn't happening.  Maybe it was the Marvel bait and switch that clued them in when they saw that reaction and realized that 50 would be worse as they didn't even have another couple waiting to step in.  They realized too late that this wasn't going to earn them any good press and tried to mitigate the reaction before the issue was actually released.  I'm not surprised that DC is standing by the decision because they really have no alternative.  Tom King wrote it but, as I posted above, I think the decision to delay was all on the DC brass.  We won't know for sure until someone leaves, lets the truth leak, or comments on it during the next reboot, but I do not believe that the man whose goal was to show that Batman can be happy would just want to revert to the Batman everyone knows.

20 Wild Fan Redesigns Of Unexpected Arrowverse Couples
BY BEC HEIM – ON JUL 10, 2018
https://screenrant.com/arrowverse-unexpected-couples-fa-art/

Quote

All the many characters introduced over the years has led to some interesting talk of couple combinations amongst fans. Some are easier to support than others. For every Oliver/Felicity or Iris/Barry, there’s a definitely another pairing that can seem a bit out there or, at least, unlikely to happen.

For every popular pairing, there’s one that’s like John Constantine/Kara Danvers or a Captain Cold/Heat Wave. These pairings become popular either because a) people think it would be interesting or b) interactions between the characters make sense to fans in a romantic context. It can definitely lead to some interesting corners of the fandom, especially for one as character rich as the Arrowverse. Fans' creative minds get going and map out whole new arcs for their favorite characters that will never be seen on screen.

20 SUPERGIRL/GREEN ARROW
19 SARA LANCE/MICK RORY
18 LENA LUTHOR/KARA DANVERS
17 SLADE WILSON/OLIVER QUEEN
16 SUPERGIRL/THE FLASH
15 ATOM/CISCO
14 SAM ARIAS/ALEX DANVERS
13 THE FLASH/CAITLIN SNOW
12 SARA LANCE/BATWOMAN
11 THE FLASH/CAPTAIN COLD
10 SUPERGIRL/LIVEWIRE
9 KILLER FROST/THE FLASH
8 HEATWAVE/CAPTAIN COLD
7 HARRISON WELLS/KILLER FROST

Why Are Comic Publishers So Afraid of Married Superheroes?
07.09.2018   by Mike Fugere
https://www.cbr.com/why-comic-publishers-hate-superhero-weddings/

Quote

Comic books, for better or worse, are designed like soap operas (just with more punching and aliens and magical entities). Romance, love triangles, and marital strife fill their pages just as they fill daytime television. When characters aren’t punching the aforementioned aliens and/or magical entities, they’re living their day-to-day lives, and readers often find what makes the characters compelling in more quiet moments of comics. When we see Superman with a cup of coffee as he slinks around the offices at the Daily Planet we stop and say, “Hey, I drink coffee in my office, too.” When a young mutant class member gets detention at Xavier’s School for the Gifted for setting his desk of fire or what have you, we understand that heroes aren’t born heroic; they were once young and made mistakes, just like us.
*  *  *
To be fair, a wedding fake out makes for some great soapy drama. Someone walking away from the altar, leaving their would-be spouse holding the bag sounds like one of the most mortifying things someone could experience. The fallout over an event like this can shift alliances, create doubt among fellow friends and family, and fracture relationships. Again, this all good drama.
*  *  *
It’s possible publishers are moving away from big weddings because, well, the times are a’changing. Family dynamics are different than they were even twenty years ago. Some folks see marriage as an antiquated ceremony that doesn’t really prove anything in the realm of commitments and doesn’t change a relationship status (except for tax breaks, of course). And who’s to say they aren’t wrong. Or, perhaps, this is the new normal. Superheroes need drama to keep things going. Maybe the pendulum has swung in this direction to make things feel fresh by comparison.

The other reason might be some fans feel like marriage dulls the edge some heroes have, especially when it comes to vigilantes. DC’s Dan DiDio seems to think so. In the case of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, two tough-as-nails heroes with some serious skeletons in their closets, when they married, settled down, and had a child, that firey passion for cracking skulls and solving cases seems to have waned, to some degree. While this could certainly be seen as a sign of growth or a shift in priority (things that often come with building a family), some fans consider it defanging heroes. Perhaps publishers agree or, at the very least, have listened to a certain faction of readers.

Why We Need More Superheroic Marriages
By CHASE MAGNETT - July 6, 2018
http://comicbook.com/comics/2018/07/06/batman-catwoman-colossus-kitty-pryde-marriage/

Quote

In the course of a month, both Marvel and DC Comics have marketed entire events around weddings that never actually occurred. They bought into the soap opera flair and drama only to “surprise” fans at the finish line with twists straight out of Julia Roberts’ Runaway Bride. Many fans have been notably upset, throwing out backlash about the publisher’s dedication to making both weddings an event and a general lack of commitment within superhero comics.
*  *  *
None of this is to say that marriage is the only or best outcome for a romantic relationship. There are lots of healthy modes for adults to advance their personal connections and lives, and marriage is certainly not for everyone. However, for many, many people it is the ultimate goal of a successful romantic relationship and an important step in life. While many superheroes aren’t forced to perpetually remain in high school, at their original jobs, or even under their first pseudonyms, this is one common change in life that is denied to them. It part of a perpetual adolescence within the genre, and one that both Marvel and DC could do without.
*  *  *
There are just as many story possibilities to be found within a strong marriage as a young hero who is dating. That sort of long-term commitment evolves just as much as Tony Stark’s rotating roster of dates, but is far more interesting as a bond that develops with time instead of being regularly replaced. It also connects with a readership that is largely at an age where they seek stories that reflect their own lives with the grand metaphors of the genre. While Spider-Man and Mary Jane might have gone through battles no real person will encounter, they were always a relatable duo when dealing with their anxieties together and worrying about one another. Marriage is a common part of life and a spectacular adventure, and it’s one that will only make superhero comics better when embraced.

I'd understand if they had established a rule that you had to work with the character's assumed orientations or something. But there were plenty of same-sex couples on that list with heterosexual halves, and it's not like AtomWave is unheard of, so I've no idea where the hell they were going with that.

Shazam! reveals Zachary Levi’s costume in first official photo
JAMES HIBBERD  July 11, 2018 at 11:28 AM EDT
http://ew.com/movies/2018/07/11/shazam-zachary-levi-costume-photo/

Quote

Here we see orphaned 14-year-old Billy Batson, who can transform into a grown-up superhero (Levi, who starred on NBC’s Chuck) with an array of powers by saying the magic word. Billy is shown on a soda run with fellow orphan Freddy Freeman (Grazer, who played the hypochondriac Eddie in It).

To re-design the iconic superhero costume for the big screen, director David Sandberg (Lights Out) took elements from throughout the character’s appearances in comics and animated shows.

“I wanted to keep the shorter cape as a throwback to the original because that’s something that sets him apart from Superman or Batman,” the director tells EW. “It makes him feel a bit more Golden Age superhero, which is the vibe I’m going for.” Yet Shazam also has a hood from DC’s 2011 “New 52” relaunch, a glowing lightning bolt that can appear across his chest and wears the gold gauntlets from one of Shazam’s animated movie appearances.

‘Supergirl’s Jeremy Jordan Rounds Out Cast Of Broadway’s ‘American Son’; Joins Kerry Washington & Steven Pasquale
by Greg Evans  July 10, 2018
https://deadline.com/2018/07/jeremy-jordan-american-son-broadway-kerry-washington-steven-pasquale-1202423433/

Quote

Jeremy Jordan (Supergirl, Smash) will round out the Broadway cast of this fall’s American Son, joining the previously announced stars Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Steven Pasquale (Rescue Me).

Jordan’s casting was announced today, and marks the actor’s return to Broadway since his stint on the CW series Supergirl. Jordan’s previous Broadway productions include Newsies and Bonnie & Clyde.

American Son, written by Christopher Demos-Brown and directed by Kenny Leon, will be Jordan’s first role in a non-musical Broadway production. He’ll play the character of Officer Paul Larkin.

“I’m thrilled for the opportunity to join this remarkably talented group of artists,” Jordan said. “I’ve been dying to return to Broadway for quite some time, and American Son is everything I could ask for: challenging, timely, intimate, and a vast departure from anything else I’ve ever done.
*  *  *
The play is set in a Florida police station in the middle of the night, with a separated interracial couple (Washington, Pasquale) attempting to locate their missing 18-year-old son, whose empty car was found during a traffic stop.
*  *  *
American Son will begin performances at the Booth Theatre on Saturday, October 6, with an official opening night set for Sunday, November 4. Producers are Jeffrey Richards, Simpson Street LLC, Rebecca Gold, Will Trice, Stephen Byrd, Alia Jones-Harvey, Bruce Robert Harris & Jack W. Batman, Greenleaf Productions, Van Kaplan and Gabrielle Palitz.

WB really putting all their eggs in that Riverdale flop basket. I guess they figure Riverdale will be their next DCTV, when it comes to an end. But still, I don't remember any of the DCTV shows getting a fraction of the promo Riverdale has, and all these shows have done better ratings.

Riverdale is huge on social media. I remember seeing some of the tweets and they had a ridiculous number of likes/RTs which really surprised me considering their ratings. I guess it's more popular than it seems.

Yeah, it seems like the ratings metrics are off for Riverdale when compared with its social media. Also, The CW and WB hasn't had breakout stars like the Riverdale stars in a while. I mean, when was the last time you saw somebody on a CW show appear at the Met gala?

I dont think they actually as huge just that they have the type of PR that pushes them on every media.

I kind of side-eye Riverdale tbh.

I looked at LR's twitter not to long after Riverdale started and she was getting a crazy amount of likes/rts. I thought she had to have been in a hit before Riverdale, like CS.

I don't think I'd be surprised if it was revealed The CW was buying some of this SM.

I don't think that the CW are buying social media followers/likes etc, rather Riverdale has a huge international following.

It's a Netflix show in the UK so it's pushed pretty heavily there. Other shows like Arrow/Supergirl/Flash are aired on Sky which is what I think you guys would call cable channel. That means that it's not as accessible as a 'Netflix show' like Riverdale is branded as. Plus we get the episodes very quickly after they're aired in the US (you can watch them the next morning) so people are more likely to watch via Netflix rather than through other less legal means. This makes the following look bigger when compared to a show like Arrow.

Most other Netflix shows are huge, Stranger Things, OITNB etc. It makes sense that internationally Riverdale follows suit.

Yeah to me Lili, Camilla and Madeline are breakouts. Espically Lili and Madeline who both once Auditoned for Thea Queen back in the Day. David Rappaport Rembered them when he was Casting for Riverdale and of course hired them for Betty and Cheryl

Smallville' Star Kristin Kreuk Would Do An Animated Revival
By RUSS BURLINGAME - July 11, 2018
http://comicbook.com/2018/07/11/smallville-star-kristin-kreuk-would-do-an-animated-revival/

Quote

Add Kristin Kreuk to the list of Smallville alumni who would consider doing an animated follow-up to the long-running Superman prequel series.

Kreuk is at least the third -- after Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum anwered [sic] affirmatively to the question at Awesome Con in April -- to say she would be willing, citing a chance to play off her old co-stars as a factor.

"Yeah, absolutely," Kreuk told ComicBook.com. "I've never thought about it, but that sounds like it could be a lot of fun."

Kreuk is currently filming the second season of her CBC legal drama Burden of Truth, which will make its U.S. premiere on The CW on Wednesday, July 25 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.
*  *  *
Kreuk, who appeared in the long-running CW series Beauty and the Beast after leaving Smallville, told ComicBook.com that she was glad to be working with The CW again -- even if she laughed at our suggestion that they should really just invest in keeping her around full time.

"I am so happy to be back with the home network," Kreuk said. "I love Mark Pedowitz so much, and it really feels wonderful to be with people that I know and who I care about and they care about me. It's pretty special."

I don't think so, not here in the UK anyway. It was more like halfway through the first season that the hype started and then just continued. I'd heard about it from being on these forums, but it was around then that a lot of my social media were talking about (and not necessarily fandom blogs) and they're still now talking about it. 'Black Widow' Movie Finds Director in Cate Shortland (Exclusive)
JULY 12, 2018 2:12pm PT by Borys Kit
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/black-widow-movie-be-directed-by-cate-shortland-1126708

Quote

Cate Shortland, the Australian filmmaker perhaps best known for the Nazi drama Lore, has signed on to helm Black Widow, Marvel’s action-adventure project that will star Scarlett Johansson.

The move caps off a search that lasted over half a year as the studio met with over 70 directors in order to find its ideal candidate. A female filmmaker was the priority even as the search stalled at one point and the studio looked at male helmers.

The hunt narrowed in June with Amma Asante (Belle, A United Kingdom) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate) being the finalists alongside Shortland. Melanie Laurent (Galveston) and Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry) were also in the next-to-final mix.

Shortland, who does not have agency representation, had a fan in Johansson, who pushed for the helmer. The actress admired Shortland’s handling of the female lead in Lore, a critically acclaimed 2012 drama that tells of a young woman who leads her siblings through Germany as the Allied forces roll in. Shortland's most recent film was Berlin Syndrome, a 2017 thriller that stars Teresa Palmer.
*  *  *
Johansson’s Black Widow is reportedly set before the events of the first Avengers movie and sees the actress reprise the role of the Russian spy turned superheroine. The movie will be Marvel’s second female-focused film after Captain Marvel, which is set to open March 8, 2019.

The first episode is not great.  I think it was the third one that hooked me and it was through Betty becoming a much more interesting character than I'd supposed.

The show also did some course correcting fairly soon with a not so pleasant initial storyline.  Aka Ms. Grundy.
