Once I was at a hall full of people and a man with long auburn/red hair stopped near me. I couldn't stop staring. He wasn't that good looking, but ... Jamie Fraser.

I answered Silly Putty for FJ! but heck, I've been out of the country for 2 weeks so my skillz are rusty.  I saw Starlight Express in London decades ago and knew it was about trains but made no connection to Thomas the Tank.  SE is performed on roller skates, FYI.  That may come up as a question.

When I just listened to FJ, I initially thought it was “dye” instead of “die.”  Once I read it, I got the answer immediately.

Aren’t you not supposed to shake a Magic 8 Ball? I thought agitating the liquid led to air bubbles.

This was my problem as well and why I was confused and missed it.

Those missed DJs killed her.

I'm so glad Ali won after Alex was kind of a dick to him about his DD wager. Alex, just host the game. Keep your opinions about wagers out of it! Alex also irritates me when he points out a contestant's reaction to the FJ category. I know the contestants should keep their composure, but that's hard to do in the moment.

Anyway, my gets were Mayflower Compact DD, semantics, Hoboken, "It was a very Good Year," Arizona, Dakota, Red Wings, and FJ in an instaget. At first I thought Jessica and Deirdre misread the FJ clue, but I can see why they'd guess Truman. The wording of the clue was, "On November 3, 1948, he sent a congratulatory telegram, then told reporters, 'I was just as surprised as you.'"

I suppose a player could use that to their advantage. Fake being upset about a category that's actually in your wheelhouse, maybe luring opponents to not risk as much because they figure you won't get it right.

I was a blank on FJ, but I don't feel bad because it was before my time.

Congrats to Ali, the Canadian!  Deirdre and Jessica deserved to lose.

A picture of Mia Farrow.  *facepalm*   I'm confused.  On what planet does Arizona come before Alabama alphabetically?

I got Hoboken, "It Was A Very Good Year" (half of the answer was in the clue), and Dakota (DD).

FJ was an instaget and it was before my time.

We got a "good for you".  Drink!  ???

Also, none of them knew Gordie Howe was a Red Wing...that, I can NOT forgive!

I instantly knew Detroit Redwings, but said Truman for FJ!  Arizona is first alphabetically in the list of landlocked states (category was the 27 Landlocked States).

The category was landlocked states, so Arizona is the first alphabetically among those.

On Planet Landlock States.

I call foul on the Sinatra answer of It Was A Very Good Year since very good year was in the clue. I knew the answer but figured it couldn't be correct if pretty much the entire answer is already in the clue. Gah.

I said Truman for FJ. It could have been him, sending that telegram when he got the Chicago Tribune with the "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN" headline. Then yeah, he was "surprised" when he found out he won after all.

I was glad Ali pulled it off in the end, after his gutsy DD wager and Trebek's "Oh, HELL-lo" snark about it. Trebek is such a snot to those people he loves to be with, the smartest people ever. I'm guessing he forgot he said that at the beginning of the episode. He can go from super smoozer to smart ass in no time at all.

That FJ question sucked.

It could easily have been Dewey or Truman.

What they should have done is included the day of the week, not just the date.  They said November 3rd, but they should have said Wednesday, November 3rd (I assume it was Wednesday when it happened), so it would be clear which one of them would be saying that.  The way it was worded, seemed like a complete toss up.  I could have been Truman sending a congratulatory message on Tuesday night , thinking he had lost like everyone else, and then being surprised the next day.

Is it going too far when to do that and making to easy?  Maybe.  But You give video and picture clues all the time that are totally unnecessary, so no worse than those.

I confidently said Truman for FJ, but then started thinking about it, and waffled between Dewey and Truman.  Unfortunately, in the end, I picked Truman.  Boo, hiss.

Ali pissed me off with the starting at the bottoms of categories and working his way up, so I just couldn't root for him, though I wanted to.  Better him than middle girl, I guess.

I disagree. I mean, I got it wrong -- said Truman -- but the actual telegram message, "I'm as surprised as you," makes sense since the newspapers declared Dewey the winner, and so Truman would be surprised to have really won.

As for my TSs, I only got Hoboken and It Was a Very Good Year. BTW, at the end of the interview segment, Alex said to Deirdre, "That's something positive to look forward to." I thought, That sentence belongs in the Redundancy category.

The clue stated: ON NOV. 3, 1948 HE SENT A CONGRATULATORY TELEGRAM, THEN TOLD REPORTERS, "I WAS JUST AS SURPRISED AS YOU"

So the "I was just as surprised as you" was to the reporters, not part of the telegram. Easily could've been interpreted as when Dewey's win was erroneously reported, Truman would've sent the congratulatory telegram and told the reporters he was surprised because he was favored and the papers thought he would win.

I mean, ultimately there's only one right answer. Only Dewey said that quote to the reporters. Mighty confusing, though.

My reasoning too. Embarrassingly for me, my first job in legal was at Dewey Ballantine, the law firm started by Thomas Dewey. Between that, and being a Chicagoan who sees that headline reproduced everywhere (it was on the cover page of the Trib's Archives for years when they were online), I am shamed.

LOL. One of my books was inspired by events that occurred during the filming of The Exorcist. My sister played the Demon (yup, the rotating bed, pea soup, etc.) for Linda Blair. The first sentence in my book is: "The woman who straddled Victor Madison had hiccups." The chapter is somewhat extremely raunchy, ending with a murder. When my sister recommends the book (it is, after all, her story), she always tells people to skip the first chapter.

For FJ I thought Truman, but reread the clue and recalled the emphasis Alex put on HE and changed it to Dewey at the last minute.

I ran the shapes category but decided not to brag about it.

Dewey or Truman sending that message would make sense, one as much as the other.

I guess the congratulatory message part was what we supposed to tip it off to being Dewey, since Truman won, but I thought maybe Truman sent a message to Dewey before figuring out he actually won.  And its not clear that the two events were one right after the other.  It could have been Truman sent the note thinking he lost and then the next day declared "I am as surprised as you", which was actually to the reporters, not the other candidate.

I thought it was very realistic, and pointed out that even someone with Canadian citizenship. crossing in an area where it is usually a pretty easy crossing (British Columbia to Washington State), if he didn't "look right" would have problems getting through.  Apparently they decided to verify his credentials, and the implication obviously was that ti was because of his appearance, since he has almost no accent.  Possibly it was his birthplace, but even that is pretty narrow minded.  I also liked that even though he had to go through this, he seemed to make it a bit about how he overcame the hardship, and I'm glad he won.  Despite starting at the bottom toward the end of each round.

I popped in here after 7 pm but before I saw the game so I knew Ali won.  All the way through the game I wondered how he did it with so many wrong answers. Glad he pulled it out in FJ.

My ts's were It was a Very Good Year, Alt, Pennsylvania and Detroit Red Wings.

I knew who they wanted for FJ but had a hard time dragging his name out of my brain.  The think music ended and then Dewey came to me before any answers were revealed so it was almost a get.

For me it was easy - it was clearly the election and for me it didn't matter what day - since often elections were called on the day of. But in this case, it was the year that made the difference for me, and the word congratulatory. Losing candidates don't typically send congratulatory messages until after the election results are confirmed (not by newspapers), and they've conceded.

Only one newspaper, the Chicago Daily Tribune (sorry @ChicagoCita).

From Gabaldon's website:

Quote

How is Gabaldon pronounced?

My name is pronounced GAB-uhl-dohn (long o). In Spanish it’s pronounced gav-ahl-DOHN (still with a long o).  It rhymes with “stone.”

Reading thru the posts after my last post made me all confused. I reread my post and saw that my argument was opposite of what I was trying to do. Doh. Anyway, I still don't have any problem with how the clue was written. ON NOV. 3, 1948 HE SENT A CONGRATULATORY TELEGRAM, THEN TOLD REPORTERS, "I WAS JUST AS SURPRISED AS YOU" Yes, one could guess either man, so maybe this just comes down to what you actually know. Not a bad thing on a quiz show. However, I also believe one could reason that when just one newspaper declares a man the winner, the "loser" wouldn't automatically send a congratulatory telegram. Everyone would wait until the results were official.

Travel tip: stop at the Duty Free and use the restroom before crossing into the US because it is a major pain in the ass coming into the US from Canada even when you're a US citizen. Not to mention getting stuck on one of the bridges for 45 minutes because no matter how many lines are open, getting through US customs takes so long traffic is backed up onto the QEW.  It's like it's a crime to leave the country and then try to return.

That saddens me. The last time (only time really) I visited Canada, it was easy both ways. Then again, we took the ferry back and forth (sans car) from Port Angeles, so I don't know how that process is different these days.

I haven't been to Canada since my college days when I went to Niagra Falls on break. That was before passports and all the other problems. I distinctly remember driving through the border crossing to Canada since the guard there wanted to know what I had in the paper sack on my passenger seat. Instead of letting me hand it to him, he reached for it, feeling up my boobs as he reached across me, both on his way in and out.

The only thing Canadian customs officers have ever doen to me is inform me there was a gigantic bug on my back. But first he asked if I had a nervous disposition. (It was actually a butterfly and dead--I'd been driving with the window open.) Oh, there was one who quizzed me on weaponry. By the time he got to pepper spray I was wondering if there was a crime spree in Ft. Erie I should be prepared for.

In the scores of times I've crossed into Canada before and after 9/11, I've been asked to open my trunk once, once had to explain why on earth anyone would be going to St. Catharines, and one time had an unusually grumpy officer. But usually, it's more like, "Where are you from, where are you going, how long do you plan to stay" and enjoy the Timbits, eh?

On the return trips, I've been pulled over (they wre pulling over every 5th car that day); had to open the trunk everal times, once while driving a hatchback (..?); been iterrogated about why I would drive across southern Ontario to get from New York to Michigan instead of adding hours onto the trip and dodging triple tractor trailers in Ohio; if I'd stopped anywhere; been treated very rudely; and had to explain that yes, I only spent a few hours in Canada because I drove from Ft. Erie to Niagara on the Lake along the parkway and back.--because my plates are Connecticut but I'm from the area and just wanted to have some time to myself while visiting family and I like seeing the Falls.

I've crossed at all of the bridges over the Niagara many, many times, as well as Port Huron/Sarnia, Detroit/Windsor, the 1,000 Islands several times, and a few other places once. Things get much worse here and I'm going to pack up the cat and head for that road in northern New York.

ETA: it is just weird crossing a land border!

The easiest border crossing that I took to Canada was through New Hampshire. I hadn’t realized that I had crossed until I got to a Canadian McDonalds. They actually had a server that offered refills on coffee. I was impressed. Very beautiful scenery along the way. Back then there was little to no traffic either.

Wow, the two times I went to Ottawa and crossed the border at the Thousand Islands crossing, it was easier to get back into the US than it was to get into Canada.  Although even then, it was only maybe 15 minutes the second time when we were stopped at the crossing on the way up and had to go into the building.  Had to fess up to the peaches we hadn't eaten at our lunch stop and the cereal which would've been much more expensive in Canada, but the guard was cute.  And at least my friend had taken her gardening tools out of the car before the trip; might've been hard to explain the loppers and the shovel.  This was maybe 2010-2011.
