S05.E11: James K's Story

James K. used pidgin English when describing Chinese food.  Such mocking behavior of a presumed accent is racist.  Please do not perpetuate his use of that language.

Lisa: (exhausted, dejected, sad) " I'm going to bed now"

James: (whining).."Buuut WhassGon Happen tew Meee if ah  Mess the Baid and yew ain't here?"

Lisa then defeatedly makes a really uncomfortable pallet on the cold floor of their depressing single-wide in case Man Baby OWMAHLAIGS shits the bed. That way she can be awoken from her Bed -o-Nails sleep to wipe Jabba' s enormous ass.

That!

...Is how that went down.

I watched this episode again last night and I could not help but feel all the more sad for Bailey.  I'm sure she feels obligated to help out around the house because hey, this is her mom and dad and (I'm completely extrapolating here) since her older brother is only mentioned in passing, apparently he has abandoned them (and who can really blame him?), so she is all they have.

I can't imagine being in her shoes right now...wanting so badly for her dad to get better about his eating and watching him eat cheesecake like it's better than sex.  Then, while he's all wound up about how he's gonna show that Dr. Now that he can lose the weight and get down under 600 pounds, she sees an opening and says "you want those weights now?" and gets the answer "no...I don't feel like it now."  I didn't need to see her face to know he couldn't have crushed her any more if he had physically slapped her.  She should have gotten up, shoved the weights in his hands and said, "YES NOW!!!  IF NOT NOW, WHEN?  YOUR LAST HOPE JUST TOLD YOU TO GO BACK HOME...YOU'VE LATERED ENOUGH!!"

As much as I've taken negative inspiration from James K. (as mentioned in my previous post on this thread...oh, and things are going well, thanks), I don't know if I can watch it again because I just can't watch poor Bailey, along with James's dad the only innocent victim in all this, have her heart broken again and again.

Y'know...James talks about how he had such a rotten childhood with his mom...how dare he ruin his kids' lives to the point where one of them doesn't want to be around (again extrapolating here about Austin, the son) and the other one is taken out of school to wait on his fat ass hand over foot?

Damn you, James...get your act together.  Stop being such a selfish dick, eat the broiled chicken breast, and lift the damn weights.

Hey y'all!  I cleaned out my DVR today getting reading for the Scott Peterson multi-part and stuff I'll never watch.   I kept this episode.  I have no idea why.  Maybe because of Lisa, a classical abused woman, and was maybe an abused child.  I don't know.  He can't hit beat her if she gets away from his little bubble.  But he sure shames her.  Sleep on the floor, unwrap my burger, clean up my poop.  She's his slave.

There a new Scott Peterson show coming up? Do you have a network and day?

Back on topic - I wonder if Lisa unwraps Bailey's burgers or expects her to do it herself? What's James going to do if she doesn't unwrap it - throw it at her? Kinda doubt he's gonna throw away food.

A&E, starting August 15.  6 parts!

He'd probably throw the wrapper at her.

Re:  How the hell they pay for it all.

Is the whole money/benefits game the reason why James and Lisa are not married?  If they were married, would Lisa be (for lack of a better term) "contractually obligated" to take care of James and, therefore, not eligible to be paid by the State of Kentucky to take care of him?

(Personal update:  it felt good this morning to walk from my car to my office without getting out of breath!!)

(Well done vadare!  )

I can only watch this episode in bits and pieces because I find James K the worst of ALL Dr. Now's patients.  The only way I could see him making any progress would be if he was an inpatient with psychiatric therapy every day along with physical therapy and of course medical oversight.  But for him I think the mental health issues (like being verbally abusive) are something that really need to be addressed.

Whatever the reason Lisa and James aren't married, and the money theory does make sense, I wouldn't wish that on any human being!!

Sorry, I can't delete the badly written post above until I get on my desktop.

I was trying to say that with Asian fast food you get tons of food for very little money whereas buying the ingredients to make it yourself gets you far less.

What do you figure - $6-8 for a Chinese meal?  Maybe $10 in a big town like Houston? I eat a whole bag of Asian veg, $1.30-1.60; 1/3 of a bag of Gardein veg*n 'meat,' if I eat a 'meat' with my stir fry;  and because I'm diabetic and reduce my carbs, 1/4 - 1/2 a pack of ramen (whole pack $.20 (crap grocery ramen)- 1.70  (fancy brown rice & millet ramen).  So, taking the average costs, a very filling, big 1.5 bowls, of mostly veg, broth, and a little ramen cost me $4.11 roughly,  and a lot less if I do the cheap ramen or leave it out all together. And, I know the calorie counts and what's in it. I really think these people just are used to thinking about food and what you can do when you make it yourself.

If you do not have the amenities set to prepare the food that is an extra cost. They like lots of meat and all the extras (and usually all those extras are not veggies if they can help it from what I've seen). I doubt if they could get away with paying as little as you do. I know where I live even if I shop in the Asian markets $4.00 will only cover some meat. But at the Chinese Fast Food you can get a serving of meat and two sides for about $6.00.

I don't see any of them preparing their meals from bags of frozen vegetables until Dr. Now puts them on that diet. I don't see any of them going to Chipotle's or Flame Broiler Chicken either. They are at the windows of the fired food and burger with a pizza on the side palaces.

So...an update on me and my legs so that we can explore the mystery that is James and "MY LEEEEGS."

I went to my GP last week when the lymphedema in my legs got much worse.  It was fine while I was walking around and moving, but the second I got into bed and elevated my feet, it was horribly painful.  It was a burning, angry pain...it felt like two jellyfish had wrapped themselves around the backs of my calves.  Plus they were oozing as well.  (Sorry...I know...TMI...but it's relevant, I promise.)

My GP (who has been my doctor since I was knee-high to a flea) tells me this is now cellulitis.  He wants me to see a wound specialist where I will be fitted with something called a Unna boot.  This is, essentially, a great big boot-sized bandage that is lined on the inside with some sort of ointment.  They put it on you, you walk around with it, you go back in once a week for them to change it out, you keep this up until the legs are healed.  But in the meantime, my GP wrote me a prescription for an antibiotic and, before I left, gave me a shot of antibiotic in my left butt-cheek.

Fast forward to today...I go to the Wound Center (for those of you familiar with the Richmond, VA area, the one at Chippenham Hospital on Janke Road).  By now, I've been on the antibiotic for nearly a week and my legs are much better.  They don't hurt anymore and there are no more open sores.  Wound Doctor examines my legs carefully and asks me what my GP did.  I tell him I don't know what he shot my butt-cheek up with but this is what he prescribed me and handed him the bottle of pills I've been taking.  Wound Doctor tells me he "100% agrees" with the course of action my GP took, my legs are healing nicely, I don't need the boots, and unless my legs get worse for some unknown reason, I don't need to see him again.  Nice meeting you...have a nice day!

So...now on to James...THERE IS A TREATMENT FOR THIS!!  He could go on antibiotics and/or he could do the Unna boots.  He apparently DOESN'T have to suffer.

SO WHY DOES HE?

It boggles the mind!

I'm speechless....

First of all:  Dr Now is from Iran, which is not part of the Middle East.  Second of all, not all Americans weigh 800 lbs.

These fat people are the laziest, self centered people.  They really think they'll be able to eat whatever they want after surgery....   NOT HAPPENING

The thing about this is, they all call weight loss surgery their "last chance", but don't seem (or want to) to understand, Dr Now requires usually 50 lbs of weight loss before he even considers surgery.  When they do lose 50 lbs, they are losing weight by doing something called DIETING.

Dont tell me they can't Diet...   don't give m this "it's an addiction" BS when addicts abstain every single day from whatever they are addicted to.

The one thing I cannot stand is when they say, "we are doing this together" or "we are all going to eat healthy".  ??????   Charity made her daughter and boyfriend throw out a bunch of food she can no longer eat and says she cares aboit then, but a few days later is eating pizza and other foods they are not supposed to eat. It's like, if they can't have it, nobody can.

Erica's family was the best. No nonsense.  I love it when she complains everyone else gets to "eat what they want" and her sister says, "WE DONT WEIGH 600 POUNDS".  YOU got yourself into this situation that everyone has to completely uproot their lives and change (completely unappreciated ) and now you say bullshit like "my family isn't supporting me".   Ba ba ba BULLSHIT...   Selfish.

I'm glad you are on the road to recovery. Like you, I wonder why some of these people don't seek help when things first start to go wrong? Considering the pain, the possible disfigurement, the loss of mobility, etc., who wouldn't run to the doc to see what can be done?

I'm not being snotty, but how would he get the boot on?  He has ginormous elephant legs and itty bitty feet.  Wasn't he in the hospital for awhile when Dr. Now chewed Lisa out?  It seems like the boots would have been used then.

Also, one of these shows had someone (I can't remember who) that kept cheating on the diet and was on her way to dying from the cellulitis infection.  The infection was due largely in part to her eating habits.  FRIIIIIIED rice, cheesecake and great big burgers five times a day probably kill any antibiotic in James system.  Now I know that's not true, but you get my drift.

A person has to be willing to help themselves.

All points taken...but I wonder if, the two times that we saw that he was in the hospital for a month on the 800-calorie diet and lost 50+ pounds, that they could have tried to put him on an antibiotic to clear up his legs.  They could have even put him on something stronger, which would have the added effect of acting as an appetite suppressant.  That has also happened to me at the hospital.  I had a ruptured appendix and the IV antibiotics they put me on afterward left me with NO appetite at all.  I mean NOTHING...they put my favorite foods in front of me and I tried to eat...nada.

But this is all just my stories.  Dr. Now is trained in this matter and I will defer to his superior knowledge.  But I'm just saying that's not been my experience and I'd love to ask Dr. Now about it.  (Is he on Twitter?)

James K's episode is rerunning, and I've set it to record.
Hey, I'm running out of things to watch.
It's like a balanced diet of food.  I have to have trashy to balance my true crimes (some are also trashy), and I like few of the offerings in my first love DIY, anymore.

I'm watching reruns of What Not to Wear, and am even recording Catfish episodes.  Kind of fun to think how I'm skewing their demogs.

I couldn't help myself...I watched this AGAIN last night. It's not enough that I've seen it 10 times, and own this episode on Amazon.

But things still jump out at me, that I've never noticed before.

When Lisa is bringing him that big honking plate of steak, corn and potatoes.  After he inhales it, she asks him, "Do you want more?" Are you mad, woman??? Why are you even asking him that????? Keep your mouth shut. What's going to happen if you don't give him more? He's certainly not going to jump up out of bed, and chase you with a meat cleaver!  And then, after he eats the second plate (except for a few kernels of corn he couldn't glue down with this fork) she gives him a giant slab of coconut cream or lemon meringue pie!

The filth of the first home they were in....my gosh, does no one have any time to dust, vacuum, or just generally dispose of dirty dishes?

The total, bald-face lying by both of them to Dr. Now.  I don't know how I gained weight.....He's been following the plan real good.....etc.

I just want you to know you are not alone in the James K fixation. : )

One of the things I noticed is that the medics are quite curt with James when they arrive in Houston. They yell at him to keep his hands in (I understand why they would need to  be firm, but the tone of their voices is not the way you would speak to a person who hadn't otherwise driven you crazy on the trip to Houston).  They also yell at him for something else. It seems that James yells at Lisa to get into the ambulance,  "Get (the f..k?) in here!"  I get the general feeling that the ambulance crew would have tipped the gurney over and left him on the sidewalk if they could have gotten away with it.

I'm rewatching it now, but have fastforwarded some.
I loved it when amid all the screams and drama of James' arrival at the hospital in Houston, Dr. Now saunters in and says "how're you all doing?"
I paused it after they'd ordered the fried rice.

OK, now I've finished it. Can't remember if we found any information after the show end, where James, hoisted by several strong men from his PT, and poor Lisa where he'd crush her if he fell back, is sitting up.
He assured us yet again that he's going to lose the weight, etc.
Anyone with updates.

I was in the process of watching this episode yet again and I noticed something else.

When he's about to be released from the hospital the first time, after he'd arrived there straight from Kentucky and been admitted, he says he "has been here for a month now on a controlled diet and he's ready to be out and be with my family again."

So...Lisa and Bailey didn't visit him the whole time he was in the hospital?  Or has the fatty food he loves now become his "family"...aka the thing he loves and misses the most?

Judging by his treatment of Lisa and Bailey, he obviously loves the food more than he loves them, so I'm convinced that when he says he's "ready to be with my family again" that he's been planning for days, if not weeks, the great big meal he's gonna have as soon as he gets out of the hospital.

And that's the "family" he's referring to.

Because I'm sure Lisa and Bailey have been there every day at his beck and call all day.  They're in a new city...what the hell else are they gonna do?
