Small Talk: Out of Genoa

Hi folks!

No doubt you've heard of what happened on the Fitzgerald by now. It's a story that's close to my heart, as it was my first ship in the Navy and one of the two sleeping compartments that took on flooding was where I was assigned to during my time aboard. I've been discussing it all weekend with my former shipmates and for all the salt we have about our experiences, we'd never imagined or wish for this thing to happen and for seven men to lose their lives. But they kept the ship afloat, as we once trained to do ourselves and we are all proud of what they did.

If anyone is looking to send anything to the crew, the address is

USS Fitzgerald

UNIT 100173 BOX 1

FPO AP 96665

In particular, they're in need of toiletries...not just the flooded berthings where the ship was hit, but likely everyone onboard if they still do the "caddies on top of racks" thing we all did when I was there that drove poor DCC McGee up the walls when she'd do her fire marshal reports. She always told us that shit would be a damn hazard if we needed to do major de-flooding ?

Yokosuka base has them all covered on uniforms and the Navy will be issuing replacements in short order, but if you have things like extra phone chargers or Amazon gift cards (NOT specific store cards, as not all stores ship to military addresses above) or unusually large/small shoe sizes (one of the crew wears a size 14 or fifteen I’ve heard), that will help. Or even something nice like cards or non-chocolate food/snacks will be appriciated. Lucky for me I'm currently moving anyway so its,a good excuse to get rid of a lotta extra stuff I would've donated locally anyway.

Thanks :)

@Anna Yolei, this has to be so tough for you, to hear of this tragic news that hits so close to home.   It's a very sad story. Thank you for giving us concrete things to do to help.

Attaboy, George!  Sleep it off tonight and get those belly rubs in the morning!  Now we just have to get Steve McQueen sorted out...

I'm dropping him off tomorrow at the vet on my way to work. It's the same bus route, just 5 stops before I get off so I always do an 8:30 drop off on my way to work. If he's well enough, they'll also draw blood to see if the liver treatment had any improvement on his liver.

Summer Solstice Festivities begin precisely at 9PM. It recommended that you keep your costumes on; the local constabulary will be making regular patrols, and does not want a repeat of last year's cross country fire ritual ...

<clears throat> Merkins, codpieces and breechcloths are no longer sufficient attire for our neighbors.

Food and refreshments will be provided, with merry talk, joyous song and dance, and sallies of wit and laughter.

May the Goddess Litha be with you.

How is Steve jewel, have you heard anything?

Steve is once again in infection. The tech said it seems to be the same recurring bacteria so instead of doing the biochemistry to check his liver we opted for a bacterial culture. It'll take a week to get the results, so for now he's on Baytril, and once we figure out what bacterial strain he has, they'll tailor the antibiotics so that they use the most effective one. Thanks for asking :D

this morning, when i checked my email, there was one from pay pal advising me of my payment to netflix...

we don't have a pay pal acct, we don't have a net flix acct either but my daughter does.  i called her and asked if she was using our email acct for her net flix acct and she said no..her payments also don't go thru pay pal....so i deleted the email.. went to google and put pay pal net flix email scam and sure enough, it came up..said not to open the invoice number it gives you which i hadn't..

anyway, this is just a warning for y'all if you happen to get this type of email.
