Amy and Tina hosting? And it's the Christmas episode? Shall I prepare for massive cameos to a point that the actual cast may not even get in a few sketches?

edit: That's not to say that I'm not looking forward to it because I am. I'm just noting a trend that the most cameo-heavy episodes tend to be when former cast members are hosting, the Christmas episode, and the Season Finale (especially if there's a long time cast member leaving).

I know it's not for everyone, but I think it's hysterical.

I like that the current SNL features a variety of types of humor. I think it improves the show tremendously, even when I don't particularly resonate to a particular item they're airing at any given time. Knowing they mix things up keeps me open to things, whereas when it was more tonally consistent I was more likely to just stop watching if I didn't like the tone.

Love the article on Leslie. As I posted recently, she's one of the featured players who had "it" for me the first time they appeared on air.(Bill Hader and Jay being two others). She just has an energy and delight about what she's doing that is evident. Not to mention she's doing what I'd be doing, which is "hitting on" Jost, that cool little Peppermint Pattie. She's "older" and succeeded. Yay!

I also love how she confronted Kenan on day one about what he said, and to his credit, he pulled her aside and they talked it out, and now they're friends.

Someone told me last night while Dick Clark's Rockin New Year's Eve was on that this rocker Elle King who I guess is really starting to make waves is actually Rob Schneider's daughter.  Just found that interesting.  I don't know if she deliberately tries to keep it on the QT, but supposedly it's not that well known.

I recently read an interview with Elle King and one of the first things she told the interviewer was she didn't want to talk about her dad.  IIRC, he and her mom split right before or shortly after she was born and she grew up living with her mom, never seeing her dad, living a wild life. Glad she's making a name for herself, which is why she said she took her mom's last name. We liked her music well before learning who her dad is.

Radio 104.5 (the Philadelphia alternative station) plays "Ex's and Oh's" a lot and I think they were giving away tickets to her concert awhile ago. Anyway, they're really playing her up and one of the DJs mentioned after one of her songs when I was listening a while ago that Schneider is her dad. I didn't realize she didn't like to talk about it, but that's her business and who he is has no bearing on her talent (I've liked the couple of songs I've heard from her so far). It would be cool if she came to play on the show some day.

There's a nice, though rather short, article on Ceicily in Vanity Fair online: http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2016/01/cecily-strong-saturday-night-live

A new fact I learned: I knew she wrote "Girl you wish you hadn't started a convo with at a party" with Colin, but I didn't know that they also write the Porn Stars sketches together. I always assumed she did that with Vanessa.

Getting Reflective With Colin Jost, SNL's Most Resilient Comedian: https://mi.lk/feature/colin-jost-snls-most-resilient-comedian/?su=g89PhdL

Pretty good article. He took the criticism from when he first started Update pretty hard (can't say I blame him).

Thanks for posting that; it was a good article.  He alluded to something in the article that he also mentioned when he was on Fresh Air - he told her that his first half a season or so, he would deliver lines and segments like he "thought" they were supposed to be delivered, copying the mannerisms that previous anchors had done, and that it wasn't until he decided to be himself that it started to click.  I always feel a little bad for Colin, because I think he really became a lightening rod for a lot of the shows problems during their cast transition, when a lot of it really wasn't his fault - I noticed that a lot of criticism on the show was flung towards him soley, when there were two other head writers with him, who didn't seem to garner nearly the venom (which was probably because he was the only one on camera).  And based on the sketches I now know he does write (Drunk Uncle, The Two Porn Stars, that OJ jury selection sketch from a few years ago that was one of my favorites), I don't really think he was the problem.

So, long story short, good for Colin for taking the criticism he received, acting upon it, because WU has been extremely strong this season.

Here's a Mike Ryan article about the musical chairs on who's playing which Republican candidate this season.   He makes a lot of valid points, and I think he's correct that Bobby should be Cruz and Taran should go back to playing Rubio.

ETA:  Pretty funny promos this week.  I loved Leslie saying "Somebody call Lorne!"

The Story Behind Saturday Night Live’s Spot-On Oscars So White Parody

Excerpt:

It's interesting that it originally involved more early groundwork because I actually liked that the sketch didn't do that. Especially if you're watching the sketch live, you don't totally know what the game is until Pete Davidson is very annoying and white in the Straight Outta Compton parody.
The initial sketch had Cecily [strong] as a presenter giving a preamble. "There's been a lot of controversy about the a lack of diversity, but I think we can agree that these are the best people." Then, after dress, Lorne said, "That whole thing at the beginning is slow. You don't need it. The audience knows the story, and they're going to know what you're doing soon enough."

Even after he said that, I was working with a new writer, Sudi Green, and we were trying to do the rewrite between dress and air, and basically, I was yelling at her, "Is the audience going to know what's happening?! Are they going to be able to follow it?!" It was a tiny bit of a leap of faith, but it's so much better this way because it's more fun when it creeps up on you when you realize it instead of being told it. That was Lorne's instinct, which was really smart.

That excerpt is interesting, because one of my complaints about the general current state of the writing on the show is that they take too much time "explaining" and pretending like the audience is living in a well. Most people who enjoy SNL regularly, or even those who only tune in occasionally, generally have at least a passing knowledge of pop culture. If they didn't, they wouldn't waste time watching the show because about half of it is usually pop culture commentary. They would be well served by assuming the audience already knows the premise/joke more often.

Here's a Mike Ryan article about the musical chairs on who's playing which Republican candidate this season.   He makes a lot of valid points, and I think he's correct that Bobby should be Cruz and Taran should go back to playing Rubio.

Chris Christie really just needs to do SNL a favor and drop out of the race, because Bobby's impression of him is so good that he's shackled to the character while he's running. I don't think Taran's Cruz is terrible, and I don't even remember his Rubio impression, but I think that Rubio is a big enough contender that they need to replace Pete Davidson who seems like the kid that was picked last in dodge ball in these political sketches. The "I'm younger and 100000x less dramatic than the rest of the candidates" punchline was amusing, but won't cut it if he snags the nomination.

I feel like there's an obvious attempt to put out stories now about how Jost & Che have been trying really, really hard to improve Update and draw attention to the forced banter with each other that has been dramatically increasing lately. It's kind of amusing, but I gotta tell you, I'm never going to believe that those two people would ever so much as interact in real life were it not for the situation they've been placed in.

I keep thinking how odd it would be to be in a position that depends really strongly on conveying chemistry, comedic banter, and basically a genuine friendship with a person you couldn't be more naturally indifferent towards in reality. So essentially you've got to try really, really hard to mold a real connection of some kind with someone you would likely never hang out with normally, for the sake of a job. It's not that I think they disliked each other, but I just had the distinct impression that they had virtually nothing in common except the desk they were sitting at, and so they've had to really, really force this thing to happen, which I don't think was ever the case with past co-anchors. Kinda funny.
