The Annual Academy Awards - General Discussion

That was a good piece.  I always like when voters share their insight and going against expectations even when they know someone is locked (like voting for Adam knowing Joaquin will probably win).

I've changed my tune on predictions since OUaTiH has lost momentum.  I'm now going with Parasite and 1917 splitting the top 2 (which way I'm not sure probably Parasite winning picture and Mendes winning director although I would prefer it the other way).  I came to that conclusion before the alleged leaks.

1917 will probably take a decent amount of the tech awards.  I'm predicting it will split the two sound awards with Ford v. Ferrari since it's the only award that one will likely win.

Deakins or bust on cinematography.

Here are EW's secret ballots. I love reading these secret ballots. We, as the general audience, have our own perception on who should be the nominees and winners, but it's interesting to see that perspective from actual voters and how various factors determine their ballots (like that actress who is friendly with Quentin - "if you're not voting for your friends, then what are friends for?!":

I love reading these and especially love the divergences, like one saying, “When Adam Driver sings, you bawl” and someone else saying, “When Adam Driver sings, how ridiculous was that?!”

I would love to know the identities of those voters.

Well, this is certainly something:

Some gems:

Parasite is beautifully done, but it didn't hold up the second time, and I don't think foreign films should be nominated with the regular films.

Quote

I want an American director to win. The Oscars is an American thing; English things win BAFTAs and the French vote for the French, and Quentin Tarantino should be honored for a great American movie.

Quote

I was irritated by Florence Pugh [Little Women]; she is so much older than her character is supposed to be that it was laughable. "You're, like, 30 years old [Pugh is actually 24], why aren't you a grown-up?"

My God, this, so much THIS! I just watched LW on Thursday and every time the movie flashbacked to the past, I couldn't get over them trying to sell us her as 13 years-old. It took me out every single time. I've seen it mentioned here, but I'm so grateful that someone else mentioned that.

Regular films?  Xenophobic much?

Little Women was back and forth [chronologically], and you didn't know what was going on.

Maybe *she* didn't know what was going on, but most of the rest of us had no problem.  I  mean really, you notice that Tom Hanks's eyes are "calculating" rather than "warm" but you don't notice the consistent use of different color palettes in Little Women?

At least she' s not voting in categories she didn't bother to watch.

I know, right?! Just say foreign films should not be nominated with American films, and should be relegated in their own category. It's a valid opinion that she's entitled to have, although not a good one.

I mean, she dragged Sam Mendes for not being an American director who should not win the award, but yet she didn't consider 1917 to be a "foreign film". Why is that?!

Pugh’s voice was the deepest and most mature of the sisters. It was hard to believe she was 13 and the youngest sister.

Yeah, I want to become friends with The Actress in case she's ever on the jury in a trial against me!

The prevailing sentiment is that "The Actress" in the EW piece -- the past nominee who always supports her friends, is close with Diane Ladd and has known Laura Dern since she was a baby, wants to be in a Tarantino film, etc. -- is Sally Kirkland. They say she had a "memorable" previous nomination, implying it was just one and that she didn't win. Kirkland's nomination for 1987's little-seen Anna, up against heavy hitters Cher, Close, Hunter, and Streep, was definitely memorable.

It could be someone else, of course, but the rest of the personal details match up too.

Not to be confused with the actress in the Hollywood Reporter piece, who doesn't want foreign films up for Best Picture and doesn't want non-Americans playing Americans (except for Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate, which somehow was fine).

That article perfectly illustrates why people get so upset over the nominations and the winners.

I want Parasite to win everything it’s nominated for, and for things it wasn’t too. Loved loved loved this movie. I also loved Pain and Glory and Little Women but loved this one the best. I saw all of those very close together. And I want Elton to win for song. I also loved Rocketman. That is all.

When do the red carpet arrivals begin? I'm just about to leave to run a couple of errands and don't want to miss too much. I know not much happens until the last hour or so when the bigger stars start arriving but it would be nice to catch as much as possible.

I remember that there was a time when I used to enjoy the pre-red carpet all-day Oscar coverage on the E! channel, as well as the post-ceremony after-party coverage.  The guests used to be better and more entertaining.

But now it's the cast of Vanderpump Rules playing games and trying to guess movie titles (and I refuse to believe that these people were actually guessing correctly as much as it looked like they were -- I think they were told the answers before they started playing).

We're having a rainy day in Los Angeles today, and it always seems that rain clears up in time for red carpet arrivals in any other year.  Today I don't know if it will clear up, so the tent is covered -- but the local news folks on the carpet are concerned that the pools of water are going to leak through, which should be fun!

E!'s red carpet coverage starts at 5pm ET, so in about ten minutes or so.

I think E! is saying that their coverage begins at 2 p.m. Pacific time -- so in just 10 minutes,  I don't know if anyone interesting will show up then.  We might not see anyone good until 3 p.m. or 3:30 p.m.  But it's hard to predict.

Some of the Documentary Short Subject people have arrived.

Ready to do this! I'm showered and 'glammed up' in clean pajamas from Kohls, lotioned and moisturized to the max; I will be snacking on a spread of fresh fruits and veggies, and drinking either mint decaf tea or water. My footwear is from the $1 bin at Target with those rubber things on the bottom so I don't slip and slide, and I have passed on the variety of bling that was available tonight (although I may pull out my birthday tiara as the evening wears on, that was designed by Party Store).

Bring it, Oscars!

Nice. I'm ready as well. Pasta for the Red carpet and Popcorn and Candy for the Oscars.

Y'know, I love Billy Porter, really I do, but I feel like he's just trying too hard now to keep up with this edgy, campy image.  But I do like his outfit tonight.

I always feel like there's two Billy Porters. There's the Billy Porter who works, and is one of the finest all around talents in the business. (I still have fond memories of his Lola from Kinky Boots.) The same Billy Porter shows up to interviews and is always funny and thoughtful. Then there's the Billy Porter of Awards Shows who is ... well, it's sort of a costume party.

Great idea!

I myself am wearing a long pajama shirt from a couple weeks ago for $29.99. I've chosen to pair this with a pair of plaid pajama bottoms from a few years ago for $10. Rounding out this high quality ensemble is a pair of socks from a $9.99 pack and a worn out pair of loafer like slippers that I bought for less than $2 years ago during a 90% off sale. The entire ensemble was purchased at Target.

My meal for the evening is a bowl of linguine red sauce with a plan to have dark chocolate brownies for dessert. This meal was also purchased at Target.

I assume Target will be one of the commercials we see tonight so they are an appropriate sponsor of my jammies and food.

I'm fortunate to have two escorts for the event: Gus and Cleo. Gus is an all grey cat and Cleo is a grey tabby cat. They are excellent escorts even if they are currently trying to get me to feed them an early dinner.

That's funny. I was trying to guess all the "anonymous" ones and Sally Kirkland was the first name that came to mind on the actress one.  Can't wait to see what horrendous outfit she dons this year.

Red carpet time!

I always feel like the Academy Awards has become the most boring of the major awards ceremonies. I hope this year is different but with all the acting categories a virtual lock I'm not hopeful.

Actual award categories aside, just as far as the entertainment value, energy level, dynamics of the presenters, the various audience members interacting with each other, the unpredictable moments onstage, wacky acceptance speeches, etc. ..... I find that awards shows in general are either way too safe and too dull, or they go in the complete opposite direction and try to be way too zany and edgy.   I tend to dislike either extreme.  I don't want a show where people are trying too hard to be as crazy and irreverent as they can be.  I tend to like the shows that I expect are going to be pretty run-of-the-mill and safe, but that end up becoming crazy as the night goes on, and are full of unexpected moments that shake things up.

The Tony's and Grammy's are my favorite awards shows because of the live performances. But I always find the Golden Globes to be the most entertaining film award show.

I hate gold, so that was 1 strike against it for me. I also didn't think the top matched the bottom very well.

Hi, everyone! I don't usually post much every year because we always have guests, but this year, its just me and my husband,  so I can join in.

The acting categories are a virtual certainty but I am beyond excited for Best Picture. I'm pulling for Parasite personally but I expect Mendes to win another Director Oscar and that could sway some of the voters to giving 1917 Picture as well. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was very well received in the industry and we know they love awarding themselves so it could be the spoiler. Or maybe Joker will follow up all those nominations with the big one. Or the ranked voting could allow Marriage Story, The Irishman, Little Women, or Jojo Rabbit to sneak in and take it (sorry, Ford vs Ferrari but I'm legit surprised you got nominated at all). Given the support for Parasite and the two standing ovations it got at SAG and Independent Spirit Awards respectively, it's my pick but it could legit to go almost any of the nominees.

Regina King looks flawless.

The same cannot be said of Sigourney Weaver. Check the calendar, ma'am: It's not St. Patrick's Day, yet.

I don't HATE Giuliana's dress. That's saying a lot for me.

I like her hair shorter, too. When she has all the extensions in, it drags her face down. I loved Kelly Ripa’s bob a few years back, too. I wish she’d go back to it. She and Guiliana have very thin faces, but they can both rock a bob.
