I am glad that the Panthers won against Atlanta and are now going back to the playoffs. :)

I was glad to hear Jimmy Haslem say that Coach Pettine is coming back as Head Coach. I think he's a good coach and I like many of the things he's done with the team this year. The Browns collapsed in the second half, for a number of reasons, but I think all things considering Coach Pettine has done a pretty solid job this season.

I thought that  Connor Shaw did okay today, he did some nice things. He seems like a nice guy.  I could see the Browns keeping him around in some capacity.

Johnny, Josh and Justin Gilbert need to get it together fast. I do root for all three of them and like them, but they are not going to be successful if they continue in the manner that they are. Johnny and Justin have already not lived up to expectations and have underwhelmed this season, the last thing they need to be doing is missing/be late for meetings.

I do give them some leeway as far as developing their athletic abilities goes, because they are rookies and often rookies struggle on field., And I think their two positions, are two of the hardest positions to adjust to in the NFL. But they will not get better if they don't put forth the effort and buckle down and learn to be better at their positions. I think it would be unfortunate if they ended up traded or worse yet cut, because of their lack of effort, immaturity/attitudes, but that could very well happen if they don't straighten up. Johnny already has a lot of things stacked against him as it is, he definitely can not afford to be messing up.

Josh Gordon needs to stop the irresponsible behavior as well, before he further damages his NFL Career. I think that Josh is very talented, but a couple more poor choices, and he could really damage his value and his chances of having a successful career in this league. It's already taken a big hit because of his drug suspensions.

The Browns have shown they will get rid of people they think are hurting/not beneficial to the team, and they will do it quickly. Look how many quarterbacks they've had over the years, and also how quickly they cut Ben Tate, after some comments he made regarding the RB situation. If Johnny, Josh, and Justin don't straighten up, I could see the browns packaging them up together and trading them or maybe just flat out cutting some of them.

And because Josh Gordon got suspended again for being involved in that stupidity, he will become on Restricted Free Agent instead of becoming an Unrestricted Free Agent. I don't know what that means other than its going to cost him a lot of money. Not like he deserves it anyway. Hopefully, another NFL team won't give him another chance to mess up again.

You know who else loses out because of this? Everybody's favorite agent! Drew Rosenhaus!

So, I guess Ben isn't feeling well tonight. As a Steeler fan, I sincerely hope he hasn't be hanging out with anyone from the mumps plagued Penguins.

Carolina wins the division with a losing record (and gets a 4th seed).  Now I'm rooting for them to win the Super Bowl.

They are one of my teams and I definitely am rooting for them. I want to see how far they go. I think they have been gelling more as a team these last few games. It would be interesting if they actually did go far in the playoffs. Earlier this season I had thought that they would win their division. But then they went into a slump, and then I thought maybe New Orleans would win that division.  I am glad to see that they pulled off the division win, even though they did it with a losing record. I am also glad that Cam seems to be doing okay after the accident and I think he's been moving well the past couple of weeks. I thought he moved really well last week against Cleveland. I think he will continue to push through, however long they are in the playoffs.

I think I could really get behind this.  That would be fun to see for sure.

It's officially official: Harbaugh is out.

I'm thrilled with the outcome for the Seahawks. They scared the bejesus out of me that first half, which I think speaks very well of the Rams defense. Their defense was stingy as Hell and they showed up.

Dang, what happened to 24 to 48 hours? That was like minutes....

I realllly don't understand why the Niners are so eager to dump Harbaugh. Yes, he's crazy, but so are plenty of head coaches. And he wins games. They could just as easily hire someone crazy who loses games. Plenty of those coaches in the NFL.

Well, I suppose he's going to make more money and be under less pressure in Ann Arbor. And if he can beat Urban once or twice, he's golden.

Here is some more news about some potential firings. According to ESPN.com there are league sources that are saying that the Jets owner Woody Johnson is going to fire Rex Ryan and GM John Idzik tomorrow.

http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/12090676/new-york-jets-fire-john-idzik-rex-ryan-monday

I wonder who will end up being the new head coaches for the 49ers and the Jets?

This is my closing thought to the regular season:

There are way too many recent players who have served as analysts in recent years: David Diehl, Donovan McNabb, Kirk Morrison, Brady Quinn and Ronde Barber, just to name a few.

I'm not totally against them, but what happened to the analysts from a few years ago? There are too many who haven't mastered the job yet.

Johnny Manziel, you better get your shit in one bag and grow up FAST. If you don't you're gonna learn the hard way that that NFL DOES stand for Not For Long. You have an opportunity to get back on track, but not a whole hell of a lot of time. You're on the wrong road my young friend, the road that's gonna make you the second coming of Ryan Leaf.

This goes for you too, Josh Gordon. You have the God given talent to have the world by the balls right now. There are God knows how many other young players with the same talent that didn't get the chance you did and would KILL to get their shot. You did. Don't waste it.

Farewell Jim Harbaugh. Thank You for bringing my 49ers back to respectability for a few years. If you take the Michigan job, you're at least going to an organization where winning counts.

My dream NFC Championship game would be Panthers/Cardinals. Just to see how the pregame show pundits explain THAT one. Sadly, that can't happen. They're playing each other in Round One.

In a total non-shocker, NY Jets officially fire Rex Ryan and John Idzik. Are there any more that we're expecting to get cut?

As far as rooting for someone other than my team, if it can't be my Seahawks repeating as champs, (obviously far and away my number one choice) here are some outcomes I would enjoy: I would love to see the Panthers trounce the Cowboys just to watch Skip Bayless' head explode. If not the Seahawks, I would love to see Arizona come back and do it - the beginning of their season was really impressive. Seeing the Panthers go for it would also be fun. Cam Newton seems like an all-around decent guy and the Panthers are getting their game together. All that being said I'm so crossing my fingers that the Seahawks break the streak and do it big this postseason.

For once I don't have to come up with a team to root for because my team actually made the playoffs.   Of course, I will soon be looking for a team to follow all the way to the Super Bowl.    My nightmare scenario:   Cowboys v. Broncos.   Which would be a replay of the 1970s game that caused me to fall in love with the Cowboys in the first place.   But, but, but Peyton.

Link to comment

My nightmare scenario would be Cowboys vs. Patriots, because there isn't enough beer in all the land to make that game watchable.  There have been times I've grudgingly rooted for those teams when a victory would help one of "my" teams, but the two of them facing off in the big game where no one else's fate is at stake?  I'll root for the meteorite I hope falls from the sky.

If my nightmare game does come to fruition, I guess I'll attend my first Super Bowl party.  I always refuse to subject myself to non-fans who chatter their way through the game and shut up for the commercials, but that would be the one game from which I'd want to be distracted.

I've become a Seahawks fan since Pete Carroll took over, so I'm rooting hard for them.  Otherwise, though - teams I don't care about or actively dislike.  (I used to be a Steelers fan because they're my best friend's favorite team, but I can't root for Big Ben anymore.)  Although I've never liked Denver - and can't stand John Elway - I could wind up pulling for them for Peyton's sake (unless they play the Seahawks again, in which case I'd greatly enjoy another crushing defeat).

Three accusations of rape, yes.  None of which led to charges.  Shocking, I know. [/sarcasm]  (Especially when one of the investigating officers asks to have his photo taken with him.)  One of which led to a settled civil suit, and a detailed investigation report that left no doubt in my mind.

Yeah, I don't love the Steelers for a couple of reasons and Roethlisberger's alleged sexual assaults are high up on the list. And as much as many Seahawks fans I know don't like the Steelers for Super Bowl XL, I really blame Bill Leavy for that one. He blew multiple calls and while I'm not saying that the Seahawks would have walked away with the W, I am saying that Leavy and his coaching crew were as much a factor in the Steelers win as the Steelers themselves were.

One of my old FF team names from about three or four years ago was "Lock Up the Women, Ben's in Town." That was when it was fresh news.

Bastet I always root for a sinkhole like for Ravens/Steelers, for instance. Arizona has a nice stadium and I have fond memories of the last time the Giants played a SB there but I'm rooting for it to be swallowed into the earth if the Cowboys make the SB against either the Ravens, Steelers or Pats. Oh I better add the Colts to that list, don't want Luck getting a ring either.

Huh. So I guess that leaves Broncos (will ALWAYS root for Peyton as long as the opponent is not the Giants) and the Bengals (I was CRUSHED in their second SB against the Niners).

In the NFC I'm ABC. The other five teams are fine by me.

ARGH fucking Suh. He KNOWS he has no equity with the league so he needs to keep his feet to his damn self. This greatly diminishes whatever slim chances Detroit had. Also, if the WR's can catch the damn ball once in awhile that would help too.

That's similar to how I come out with the AFC - I'd grudgingly root for the Steelers or Ravens against the Cowboys, but I wouldn't enjoy it and my preferred outcome would be "none of the above."  I have an irrational level of dislike for Andrew Luck, so I feel the same about the Colts.  The Broncos or Bengals I could happily root for against Dallas, but I'm not enthused about them otherwise.  (I wish Peyton played for a different team.)

The Cowboys are my worst-case scenario, for sure, but there's a big gulf of "meh" between that nightmare and my dream of the Seahawks repeating.  I'm a Bears fan, so I loathe the Packers.  I have some residual affection for the Lions from the Barry Sanders days, though, and it would be kind of nice to see them succeed again after all this time, but I cannot stand Suh.  I didn't like him in college, and I like him less now.  And Matthew Stafford bugs me.  The Panthers and Cardinals are just sort of there to me.

Thanks for the information about Roethlisberger.  Since I'm originally from the Pittsburgh area, and the Steelers are my second favorite team (behind the Redskins) I'll just have to ignore him, because that won't stop me from rooting for the team as a whole.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/12/29/donte-whitner-ive-been-told-browns-will-cut-guys-who-dont-buy-in/?ocid=Yahoo&partner=ya5nbcs

Donte Whitner: I’ve been told Browns will cut guys who don’t buy in

Browns safety Donte Whitner was signed this year in part to be a veteran leader. But many of the young players on the Browns’ roster don’t seem to want a veteran leader to push them. Now Whitner says he has an assurance from the team’s decision makers that those young players are on the way out.

“I’ve been assured that we’re going to bring guys in and get guys off this bus that don’t really want to be here and do what they are supposed to do,” said Whitner, via Cleveland.com.

The problem facing the Browns is that the players who aren’t doing what they’re supposed to do are some of the team’s most talented young players: Both of the Browns’ 2014 first-round draft picks, Justin Gilbert and Johnny Manziel, were disciplined last week for showing up late to work, and the Browns’ best offensive playmaker, Josh Gordon, was suspended for skipping the final walk-through practice of the season. It’s hard to get rid of your best receiver and your two first-round picks.

But maybe that’s what the Browns need to do. Whitner says the Browns can’t succeed without players who care enough to put in the necessary work.

“Any team in the National Football League where you have a good locker room, you have guys who understand what they’re supposed to do,” said Whitner. “They understand when they are supposed to be there and when they’re not supposed to be there. When you have those distractions, it kind of equals losses. Like I said, we need to get some guys off the train and get some guys on the train who want to win.”

It’s a bad sign for the Browns that the guys the team most needs to build around are exactly the guys Whitner is talking about, the guys who don’t seem to understand what they’re supposed to do.

I vaguely recall Big Ben being involved in some kind of rape case but I don't know the outcome.  Is that why he's hated by some people?

I don't need the extra ammunition, because I'm a Ravens fan. I find Ben Roethlisberger perfectly hateable, regardless of his personal conduct away from the game. I find his drama queen, 'oh look at me limping. I'm so hurt, but I'm also tough and manly, so watch me suddenly effortlessly throw this pass. Oh, now I'm limping again. Ouch' antics tiresome and desperately obvious. And did I mention that he's a Steeler?

But it's difficult to try and take the higher moral ground against any player, because you never know when someone will become Ray Rice, and allow anyone to cast aspersions on a franchise and a fanbase as a whole. That article previously linked, which attempts to paint all Ravens fans as Ray Rice supporters, is one of the countless lazy takes on the incident.

Anyway, There are three teams in the playoffs this year that I desperately do not want to see win the Super Bowl. Steelers, Patriots and Cowboys. Because the media fellatio that would ensue would be unbearable. It's generally unbearable anyway, with those teams. I also really don't want to see the Seahawks repeat, because they seem like such an unlikeable group of people. So if (when?) the Ravens get knocked out, I'm throwing my support (such as it is) behind the Packers, Panthers or Cardinals.

Is the Niners' job going to be the worst "good job" spot ever? Following Harbaugh and the previous success of that team is going to be almost impossible. Even if management/ownership are as brilliant as they clearly thing they are.

The 49ers are looking for a teaching coach. A coach that will also take the team to and win a Superbowl (in year one) or its one and done. (quoted on The Aftermath) Good luck with that.

Apparently during the press conference they mentioned someone that could coach like Bill Walsh. To paraphrase Rick Pitino, "Bill Walsh is not walking through that door friends."

The thing with Manziel is that he's a spoilt child who has a family oil fortune to fall back on if this NFL thing doesn't work out. That's one reason he'll never grow up -- everything has been handed to him on a silver platter, and he was even gifted a starting NFL qb position before he was ready. I doubt Manziel ever winds up broke and destitute and arrested in Montana because of family money, but yes, the clock is ticking on his NFL career. He was a great college quarterback (although now one has to wonder how much Mike Evans contributed to Manziel's college success) and is a good athlete. It would be a waste if he just threw it all away on partying and tweeting.

Sentiment has me rooting for the Lions, the last team in the league that's been here for the entire Super Bowl era to have never played in one.  It would almost have to be something short of miraculous, but I would love to witness another moment like this:

I really didn't know much about Johnny Football's home life, so I did some googling and...wow. The Deadspin version is even more colorful (long reads, both). I guess when there's a history of grifting, federal indictments and prison stints, poor work ethic and overzealous partying can't exactly disgrace the family name.

If the Panthers make it to the conference championship or Super Bowl, the talking heads might be hung up on the losing record, but I think the mainstream media will be all over the "human interest" angle of Cam surviving the car crash and getting a new lease on life.

They just FIRED the coach who is most like BIll Walsh. Right down to his Stanford pedigree before being hired by the 49ers. Idiots. What do I care though, I hate the 49ers.

manziel is Ryan Leaf. I would say he is like Jeff George or Jay Cutler, but they actually have some NFL talent, just bad attitudes. Manziel has none. He actually combines Ryan Leaf's bad attitude with Tim Tebow's inability to adjust from the college to NFL level. Just bad. Cleveland should just dump him now and run

I find it interesting the Browns basically used the Trent Richardson trade with the Colts to draft Manziel. That may go down as one of the worst trades in history. Richardson sucks and Manziel is going to be an epic failure.

I don't care about Suh, lucky he was not suspended. I dont think he purposely stepped on Rodgers initially, but the then stepped on him AGAIN after that, that is no accident.

Carlina may beat AZ but they have little chance beyond that to beat whoever they play in the divison round.

Lion's Suh cleared to play this week, will pay fine.

http://sports.yahoo....32122--nfl.html

I don't get this decision at all.  Even the fine seems like a pittance to me.

I want Jon Gruden.

He just signed an extension with ESPN.  I don't think he's going back to coaching anytime soon.

Rex Ryan  probably has some value as an assistant, but I don't see him as Head Coach caliber.

Link to comment

They should slap the suspension back on Suh simply because of the stupid lie he used to justify his behavior. (He claims his feet were too cold to feel the ground.)

Has he ever acknowledged wrongdoing in any of his dirty plays? And does he believe the bullshit coming out of his mouth?

Then they are too stupid for the job. (ETA, that was too harsh. I actually think everyone in the league office and the appeal process knew he was lying. They just thought it legitimately didn't warrant a suspension.)

But this isn't the first time Suh has lied about his actions. Remember when he claimed to have "accidentally" kick Matt Schaub in the nuts? Or when he claimed to be afraid of losing his balance when he stomped on a Green Bay Packer?

Edited by xaxat

If Suh helps the Lions beat the Cowboys, I'll forgive the NFL for letting him get away with that blatant offense. But the guy is a dirty player, there's little doubt about it. Still, I've seen other cheap shots this season that went unpunished, so there is precedent for it.

Apparently John Harbaugh told Andy Reid he'd buy him dinner if the Chiefs beat the Chargers. Harbs said that Reid "responded enthusiastically to the offer", but admits that he believes it "probably won't be cheap". Poor Andy, that big, loveable walrus.

In the surprise coaching change, Doug Marrone has opted out of his contract with the Bills.   All signs pointed to him staying.   He did have a 3 day opt out clause if there were new owners.   He chose to exercise his rights.   Sad.   He did a good job, its not his fault he is in the same division as the Pats.

Link to comment

The Marrone move is a the surprise I think no one saw coming. I would have to think he has another strong job offer to just quit. Not only that is comes right after Kyle Orton, their QB, as well just retired out of nowhere right after the season. Really makes you wonder what on earth is going on in Buffalo. I thought they had a good season and seemed to be an up and coming team. I don't recall a starting QB AND head coach ever both just quiting a team after a season. Very odd.

I don't think Kyle Orton just retired out of nowhere.   He was in all but name retired from the Cowboys.   He hates going through training camp and was pretty much donw with football.   The thing in Buffalo was one last gasp.

Word is Bill Polian is going to become President of the Bills, so he would want his own people and that's why Marrone is taking the out he had in his contract.

Since the Bills were in flux when Marrone was hired, he negotiated that the Bills would still pay him in full next season if he opted out if the Bills were sold to hedge against the changes a new owner would bring. He could take the Jets job and the Bills would be paying him while he's trying to beat them twice a year, plus what he gets from the Jets.   I want his agent.
