Sweet Fellowship: Duggars and Friends (aka the Bates Family and Other Featured Families Thread)

If a person/family was never featured on any of the Duggar shows, and is not related to the Duggar family by blood or marriage, they do not need to be discussed here..

We may all agree that David Rodriques is quite unfortunate looking, but let's refrain from comparing human beings to apes, its got way too much of a loaded history- please review the new Inclusion Policy updated May 1, 2022 , which details guidelines around discussing body type, capabilities, physical appearance etc. Additionally, using body size as an insult is not allowed.

My opinion is that it’s a sort of roll your eyes, unkind hand signal to everyone that doesn’t think like they do.     People who consider  the modern medical and other advances to be a good thing. People that they consider ‘woke’.   The Rods seem to think that the morals, beliefs, attire of centuries past are better than today. That it’s better to swim in filth in your street clothes than to go in a pool with swimsuits because that’s how it was done a couple hundred years ago.  That it’s better to be exposed to various diseases than to be vaccinated.

However they are more than happy to take advantage of modern things when it suits them.

The guy on the radio was talking about something similar of times past. He mentioned how hundreds of years ago, if you felt sick they bled you!

I thnk they are brainwashed to think that anyone outside their conservative christian bubble is wrong. That's how you keep them in the cult.

Is there some correlation with being Fundie and doing activities that are clearly dangerous, unsafe, unsanitary?

1.   You have to actually care about your kids in order to be concerned about their safety and wellbeing.   They have a bunch of kids, but don't really care about them -- except as being obedient little soldiers in their Army of Dog.

2.  They really don't have a sense of humor.   Hence all the outrage at EVERYTHING.   They have no chill.  Everything is an offense.   But also, they don't get funny.   Notice all their "jokes" and "funny" stories are usually something cruel, or demeaning, or both?   Thus, a kid falling into an orchestra pit  or getting his head stuck in the banister or sticking a mean sign on a sister's back is the height of hilarity for these people.  Because it harm to someone "lesser" than the one finding humor in it.

This is very true with Jill's family. You can find so many examples in Jill's posts. Horrible treatment made worse by Jill's need to post their humilitaion and suffering.

Way back  Jill mentioned Phiilip was a Cowboys fan and Dave and the other boys were Washington fans. She said "you can imagine the teasing Phillip gets". I bet we cannot imagine.

Sign on Kaylee's back. All the kids "teasing" Kaylee about her Hello Kitty shirt when she was maybe 12.

Hot pepper contests anyone?

The worst to me was that bad flavor jellybean thing they did not to long ago and poor olivia or sadie got some bad flavor and cried. The others (mostly adults) sat there and laughed at a child ready to vomit and wouldn't allow her to have a drink of water because "that was the rule".

There is a definite cruel streak that runs though these people.

As recently as the 1950's, women who developed eclampsia, seizures related to high blood pressure from the pregnancy, often continued seizing for hours on end, eventually dying from lack of oxygen.  Eclampsia was considered fatal, every time. There are a couple of episodes of Call the Midwife where this is part of the plot.  One of the main characters in the first seasons on Downton Abbey succumbed to this.

OMG, that was such a hard episode to watch.

It was really beautifully done, the writing and acting were superb.  Call the Midwife has the most accurate depictions of what labor and delivery are really like; no other show or movie comes close.  Not to mention the regular sized newborns unlike the 12 pound 'preemies' on other shows.

As soon as you mentioned eclampsia it was the first thing I thought of.

I remember when I was a kid, there was this book at the library that I loved to read over and over "The Good Old Days... They Were Terrible" printed in 1974. There were so many things I just never would have considered. I have to get a copy of that and re-read it. Too bad we can't send one to Jill.

How many tributes does JRod need?  She must be super butthurt over this one.  Nurie made two separate tributes to her.  I wonder if Kaylee will have to write another one as well before Jill calms down.  Sheesh, get a grip, woman.

I feel so uncomfortable with Jill and Dave leaving the kids with some random pastor while they go on their anniversary trip.  I seem to remember that they didn't even know the guy the first time they left the kids with him and his family.  I know Jill thinks pastors who agree with her are perfect paragons, but she's dead wrong.  I know if anything untoward happened none of the kids would feel safe speaking up.  Remember one of her sons provided a backrub to another creepy pastor and Jill thought nothing of posting it.  Even her fans warned her that it was inappropriate and she denied that there was anything wrong.  Those poor kids.  I hope Philip is OK wherever he is.

Even if one of the kids spoke up, Jill would probably choose not to believe them over the pastor who agreed with her.

One instinct I do not get from Jill is Mama Bear. She's more of a throw 'em in the deep end and make them swim.

Unless someone had the nerve to comment on their singing skills.  I could see her coming unglued with any criticism.  After all, everyone is perfect in that family.

This Bri has something wrong with her. What is she supposed to be Scarlett O'Hara? The first dress was find but this second with the gloves?

ETA: make that Cinderella. Does she do children's parties? Did she dress up for the little ones? Regardless, she looks kind of stupid. 25 years old, not 10.

#respectfultoparents ? She really can't stop being a b-word, can she.

She has nothing else to say about them because they are devoid of personality.   They aren't allowed any individuality so all Jill has is generic phrases -- about all her kids.   And her new DIL to be.   And hooo boy is that going to be a battle.

Right? And once again, she doesn’t understand the purpose of hashtags. does she really think others will be searching for that phrase? 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Like Jill has even given a single thought about whether Bri is respectful of her parents.

Without swimming lessons, or a life preserver, or even a plastic noodle from the Dollar Tree.

I think that Bri is simpering up to Jill R something fierce - being all of the things she knows Jill loves - demure, meek, proper, virtuous.  Compliments Jill's hair, makeup, clothing, singing talents, her impeccable sense of interior design.  Bri is courting Jill harder than she is courting Sam.  And once Sam puts a ring on it, Bri is going to out-Fundie Jill like a maestro violinist outperforms a 4th grader.  That is the sense I am getting.

Also, I had the misfortune of waking up today at 4am EST.  I stupidly opened Instagram and the first thing I saw was Jill's tribute to Sam and Scarlett.  It had been posted only a few minutes prior, which means Jill was putting her little film together and posting it sometime around 3:30am.

On lighter note, and one that would also be equally lost on Jill and her adoration of Andy Griffith and Mayberry.

That’s not true.  They showed several couples who were married.  One of the married couples fought all the time and threw plates at each other.

Too bad Jill thinks dancing is of the devil because the perfect christian song for this video is Stephen Curtis Chapman's "Cinderella".

That looks like one uncomfortable couple(I use the term "couple" loosley). I feel bad for Sam, having to wake up every day, knowing Bri is the rest of his life.

I also find it sad, that in every post about any of the kids or courtships, all Jill can describe of her kids, is "God loving, God fearing" because they have nothing else to describe them. They have no education, no real jobs and probably very few interests.

Yes, it is sad that that is basically all they got on their kids. No fun stories, special  moments...... what a drab and depressing life they lead.

As for Sam, I really wonder if he knows what he is getting. Is he saying a cute, godly woman his mother really loves (Jill should court her)? As for Bri, sure she is drinking the koolaid but considering her past, how long until this game ends and she is sick of it? Or will she go off the deep end and be even worse than Jill?

I honestly don't think Sam is bright, but I could be wrong, who knows? I do know he is very sheltered and has not gone out there and done things on his own. At least Tim did somewhat.

Finally, Jill is able to control her sons in law, but she can't seem to control Heidi. She is enamored with Brianne because she sees someone who will say yet to her all the time. She isn't taking a chance with this one.

Where were they when these pictures were taken, and why were they taken? Did they change costumes for a courtship photo shoot?  His tie matched her dress in both pictures.  Were they going somewhere special, or was it only for Jill's pictures?

The answer to these questions is shocking. Or maybe not so much, considering it’s fucking Jill.

Heidi has a strong support system around her. Her family is what is keeping her from being absorb by the Jill collective. Brianne seems estranged from her family, but she's a college educated woman who's lived in the outside world. She might be docile right now, but it might change later on.

I think those photos were taken at Heidi and Tim's wedding venue. Jill could make some coin giving seminars on Grifting Through Life, Professional Level.
