Sweet Fellowship: Duggars and Friends (aka the Bates Family and Other Featured Families Thread)

Message added by Scarlett45

If a person/family was never featured on any of the Duggar shows, and is not related to the Duggar family by blood or marriage, they do not need to be discussed here..

The Politics Policy is still in effect. A participants social media is NOT an invitation to discuss their political view points. Consider if discussion of certain social media posts will cause you to violate the politics policy BEFORE you hit the "Submit Reply" button.

We may all agree that David Rodriques is quite unfortunate looking, but let's refrain from comparing human beings to apes, its got way too much of a loaded history- please review the new Inclusion Policy updated May 1, 2022 , which details guidelines around discussing body type, capabilities, physical appearance etc. Additionally, using body size as an insult is not allowed.

Hannah now has her first want ad for a husband posted.  Jill has all the descriptors listed just like she was trying to sell a product.  Courtship in a year, marriage in two years?  Jill had better get working.  (this makes me so sad)

Jill is so happy having so many daughters.  She's thinking that the more sons-in-law she has, the more money they can spend feeding and entertaining her and her Hunk.  Lazy doesn't begin to describe that greedy pair of grifters.

Tim and Heidi look so happy, and Tim is looking good.  I'm glad they are living near Heidi's family.  They look very comfortable together.

Did David actually write this?

It's not full of unnecessary commas, capitalizations, or effusiveness, so... probably? (At any rate, it doesn't sound like Jill, and who else would write it for him? I guess he could ask AI to write him an anniversary tribute in a godly style, but it has a certain Rodrigues-ness to it that I don't think AI would replicate.)

Now Jill is claiming that they turned down ANOTHER offer of a TV show. She's afraid that the producers wouldn't let her proclaim Jesus from the rooftops. This was Jim Bob's concern, but he still took their money.

I think she is just making things up.  CPS would be questioning her if she was on TV.  I doubt she would get all the praise and adoration from viewers that she expects.  She really does have a real personality problem.

Maybe it was Shiny, Happy People pt2? 😂

Is anyone even making these shows about large families anymore? If so, why would anyone want to put them on TV at this point? They are down to 6 minor children at home. The whole draw of those shows was giant families.

When Jill brought up being approached about a TV show years and years ago she claimed she said no because she didn't want to give up control of her home to outsiders.

How would Kaylee know about the "hollywood mentality?"    Unless she is watching those "sinful" shows.   Maybe she is secretly a Real Housewives addict?

Also you notice that Jill is responding to Kaylee's comments and now a word about Tim and Heidi?   She is sooooooo ticked they live close to Heidi's family and not her.

As our children grow, we choose a special time to take them out, present them with a nice gift, pray with them and express to them how important it is to God for them to stay PURE physically while single.  We lovingly ask them to please make a choice to stay pure until marriage.  We have done this with all of our oldest 7 children.  Now, it was Tessie and Hannah's turn.  We went out to eat at a nice restaurant in Vermont and then went and bought them each a purity ring, and then went to a lovely spot to talk about their purity rings and what they represent. Of course, these 2 precious girls were as sweet as they could be.  They WANT purity.  They CHOOSE purity.  They PROCLAIM purity as the best way and want husbands (someday) that have chosen the same.  We are blessed.  We love you, Tessie and Hannah.  😊❤️

1 Timothy 4:12 "Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity."

Heaven help us, a Jill Rod on tv, Look, when the Duggars and the Bates burst on to tv 15 odd years ago, big or unique families who were wholesome, weird and just outside mainstream culture enough to be freak shows were all the rage (see Honey Boo Boo and all the multiples shows). They certainly made no secret of their faith (part of the wholesomeness for some viewers, the freak show for others) but they did play down the proselytizing and the condemnation of  everyone who didn't follow fundamentalist Christianity. For Jilldo, wholesome fun is climbing things illegally and swimming in ditches. More importantly, her reason for being is lecturing people about their sinful ways. A tv show at that point was never going to fly (Plus, they lived large chunks of the year in an RV, talk about a logistical nightmare for filming).

Nowadays, things have shifted a lot. Outside of the "sweet friends", I think the number of people who see these families as just wholesome is pretty low. Heck, the Duggars (for sure) and the Bates (allegedly) both lost their shows when the Shiny Happy People facade dropped. I suspect this is why all of the big family shows are now about those families falling apart and losing their faith (see Plaths and Browns). There's a slim possibility that some producer somewhere caught the recent meltdown and thought "crazy religious folks melting down over son's wedding" would be ratings gold, but even Jill is canny enough to realize that would end badly for her.

No way Jill was offered a TV show. They are not remotely interesting or engaging. Who would watch Dave sleeping and Jill bossing her kids around. Oh and watch Jill guzzle plexus like it's booze.

Poor Sofia looks unwell and tiny. Janessa is almost as tall as tall as her.

Why are the girls wearing their purity rings on their middle fingers? Is this a thing or did Jill and David not have the rings sized for them? I wear a size 5 ring which is hard to find and I usually have to have rings sized to fit my little scrawny fingers. (Don’t get me started about small wrists and watches!). Considering Jill’s girls are rail thin, I would guess that the rings are pretty loose, even on the middle fingers. Jill. With her giant sausage fingers and circulation cutting rings would not understand this.
or…maybe it’s a subtle way to say f.u. to all of the girls who aren’t wearing purity rings. 🙄

I see Renee has had that terrifying smile for quite some time. She must be scared to hell of Jill.

I can't even imagine going out somewhere with my parents and have them give me a purity ring. I would be humiliated, but these girls have it drilled into their head every damn day.

I wonder if Jill is afraid Timbo will go all Jill Duggar on her ass and spill the beans some day?

Especially odd since Tessie has the nail on her ring finger done with sparkly nail polish like she knew she was getting the ring.

So Hannah gets a purity ring for her birthday… while Ellen’s daughter Hope gets  a beach weekend 18th birthday with several girls/women of her own age( and her family).    Hannah and Tessa are  dolled up what Jill considers modest ‘prom’ dress while Hope and her friends wear comfy lounge pants.

Did we ever find out why the Bateses were canceled so suddenly?  I thought that was very odd timing, but I have never heard a plausible reason.

There was never any announcement except that the network had decided to do a shift in their programming away from reality shows to scripted programs.  Except they didn't.  We also know that there was a full season of the show already finished and ready to air and ads for the new season had aired repeatedly when the announcement was made; so it was obviously something not only sudden but pretty major.

A small hint might be that the fools posted a clip online of a group of the them  playing a game and one of them made a joke about the George Floyd killing and they all laughed like hyenas.  Between that and the shrine to KKK founder Nathan Bedford Forrest at Gil and Kelly, they might've decided that there was no way to redeem them.

She (Hannah) looks a lot like Nurie. And while we joke about eyebrows, really what is it about plucking them when a girl gets a certain age?

I always thought Hannah had a unique look about her - very pretty but different from her sisters, until Jill got hold of Hannah's eyebrows.  Now she definitely looks like Nurie.  It's too bad because Hannah had lovely thick eyebrows, but I guess eyebrow destroying is the girls' rite of passage or something.

This is exactly what I thought when Jill lied that she was approached again for a television show.  There is no way she'd ever agree even if she was approached - they'd have to get rid of the map, bring the printing shop and the Barndo's electrical systems up to code and worst of all, she'd have to feed her kids which would really cut into her hair, makeup, and grifting time.

Didn't she make a very brief appearance on SHP Part 1?

As for showering in the RV, I'm certain that's only for Jill, lest she bump into a partially-clothed woman in the campground bathroom.  The kids get to swim in muddy ditches and jump fully clothed into the campground's pool - that's how they get clean.

For sure the eyebrows are what did it because I never really thought so before until that birthday picture.

If Jill and the Rods were offered a TV show, it was most likely an expose on the failure of religiously based homeschooling to turn out well-rounded graduates who actually have a basic education.

Or, it's about fundamentalist Christian women and their love for MLM's and their willingness to lie and cheat to get other women to sign up.

Or, maybe, it's an overview of the huge amount of snark followers/non-fans there are who make up most od the internet posse of these weirdly religious women on social media.

Heidi’s sister Hope celebrated her 18th birthday at the beach, with actual friends and family. They rented a house for the weekend. I’m not including pictures because they include her friends.

Ellen’s post:

So grateful we could give Hope such an amazing 18th birthday!! 🥳

I'm so thankful for these amazing friends Hope has. They made it an amazing weekend!🩷

I'm especially thankful for my husband for paying for it. Lol He is such a hard worker, amazing father and husband.

It was a great weekend!!

Hope, we love you! You are amazing!!

Thank.  That's all I remember, too. TLC should have known the background and feelings of this family in advance.  The did film the pictures in their home.

I thought they were on UP or something like that. But yes, there were on TLC first (with the Duggars). Honestly, I don't think TPTB cared until people noticed.

Nurie is dressed like a saloonkeeper in the Wild West; Kaylee and Renee are dressed and made up to look like they work upstairs in the saloon. Tessie appears to be wearing a tablecloth or old curtains with a lace trim.  I thought Jill didn't celebrate Halloween.

Why does Jill think these looks are attractive or wholesome? Even on a budget, she could have found decent dresses and skipped the ton of makeup and outdated hairdos.

These poor, poor girls. Their mother always seems to want them to look as bad as possible. I'm glad Jill never got a reality TV show to embarrass her children to  a national audience every week.

You are spot on with those descriptions. And the hair? What young girl wears their hair like that all poufed up! Poor kids just look so outdated and sad.

The networks didn't film the pictures. Kelly showed them on her now defunct blog. But no worries, her post is all over the Internet.

Even if they didn't film the pictures, there is no doubt the production team scouted the location, toured the house and knew they were there.  Presumably, somebody asked Gil and/or Kelly about them and their feelings for the Confederacy and the KKK.  If TLC or UP didn't know, they should have.

I think the pictures were removed after she received massive backlash on the blog. They've never been seen since. And that was LONG before UP came knocking. Not sure about the timing with TLC and I ited Bates of America. That might be why that show only lasted the one season.
