S01.E07: Showdown at the Golden Saddle

Recommended Posts

Things are looking up for the Huangs when Louis gets the restaurant a billboard in a prime spot in Orlando. They even get an invite to the country club. But when someone repeatedly vandalizes the billboard, they're left wondering why. Eddie works hard to get the attention of the girl he's crushing on, but it doesn't help matters when his mom hires her to babysit him.

I thought this was a mediocre ep. I did like when one of the younger brothers said to Eddie, "Are you saving that seat for your attitude?"

Loved when Jessica did her Rodney Dangerfield impression, saying, "Hey everybody, we're all gonna get laid!"

And finally, I liked when Eddie was having intestinal problems, then sat next to the neighbor girl and said, "Ah. Now where were we? Nope," as he got back up to go to the bathroom.

I need to learn the names of the two young brothers. They are adorable, and I love their characters.

Emery's the middle kid, the one who's effortlessly cool.  His bus friends got him a breakfast burrito (with chorizo!) when they learned he'd be carpooling instead!

Evan's the youngest, the one who's most definitely a teacher's pet.  (BTW, I went to the Baohaus website today, and I learned that it was actually started by Eddie and Evan. Huh!)

peeayebee, click on About Us?

Yes, I did. I was just wondering what led arc to the site in the first place.

I actually don't know much about Eddie Huang, but it just occurred to me that when this show was starting, I read that he's a chef -- I never heard of him before -- so is Baohaus his restaurant? Does everyone else know this but me?

Here's that website, but I'm missing something: Where did you hear about it in relation to the Huangs?

I was poking around there as background research for my reply in the food thread, but also, bringing Cattleman's Ranch to the forefront this ep made me think about the adult Eddie's career.

Edit: and as a food nerd, that's why I'd heard of Huang before his memoir or this show.

I am beginning to like Eddie more and more.  His desperation to be cool.  Loved it when the babysitter took the c.d. that was for mature audiences only.  I was wondering whey his parents let him have that.  (Maybe they didn't know he had it.)

Loved that the mom could quote so much from Caddyshack!  Shows that she really does have too much time on her hands.

Sweet Evan.

This episode was only ok for me.  That is because I dislike story lines with young kids going after older people romantically (this is why Manny is my least favorite character on MF).

It bugged me when Eddie was hitting on the adult neighbor for that reason, but a 6th grader having a crush on an 8th grader is pretty age appropriate so it didn't bother me as much. And I loved that she took his CD.

I didn't quite get Eddie's dream on the bus. Was that the musical style of the CD he was listening to or something?

Eddie's dream music was Notorious B.I.G.'s "One More Chance (remix)".  It's a dreamy sounding song with a chorus of women begging for another romantic chance.  It was to relate to at first, his father getting a second chance of seeing the billboard on the way to school, and then at the end of the episode... I forget.  Another chance to be with his crush on the bus?

The CD he was listening to was Ice Cube.  Hardcore rap.  Whatever CD has the song "Check Yo' Self" on it.  Wikipedia says it's "The Predator".  The two pieces of music are not related.

not every parent cares. I was taught to not go around saying the stuff in those songs but I've been listening to hardcore rap and watching r rated movies since I was like seven. If you are raised right then it doesn't matter.

Yes, Baohaus is his restaurant, Eddie was pretty famous with people into food before his memoir. He has been featured in several different shows, his story of being a hip hop loving former lawyer who quit to cook the food his mom used to make was a good narrative for such shows. He also had a show on Vice.com about food.

I loved that the bus driver was drooling over that classic Rolling Stone with Janet Jackson on the cover. I felt like it was an error because the show takes place in 1995 and that Rolling Stone came out in 1993 but I pretended that the bus driver has been holding on to that issue for two years so he could stare at it every day while he tuned out the kids.

I keep finding small reasons to love Evan in each episode. I really want an episode that follows the one of the other brothers for a day! The actor is so adorable.

I think Eddie is starting to come across much better in the show overall. The writers seem to be finding ways to better make his character work. And to me, it felt like the writers incorporated hip-hop much more naturally. I read the AV Club review, and I appreciated what the writer said about how the show found a way to sell Eddie's use of hip-hop to connect with others through that acknowledgement he gets at the end with Nicole.

I KNOW this is nitpicky, but for a show that is so good at capturing the era, Eddie's using a bottle of Cha! siracha pulled me right out of the moment.  Isn't that a recent thing? Not siracha, but the Texas Pete Cha!

I only ask because I remember seeing it in the store recently and wondered if it was a way to get people to try siracha who might think the original bottle looked too exotic.

Wasn't the Scrooge swimming in money in the credits?   I really feel like I've seen it more than once.  But maybe not.

Texas Pete Siracha is new, but I thought it was the green rooster bottle that has been around since well before 95.   But yea if it was the Pete?  That's only a couple of years old.

The bears?  OMG.  I wasn't sure about this show at first but it has really grown on me.

Seeing how Jessica and Louis interact bumps Louis up for me (I found him only tolerable previously). He is a liar and thief, though. There's no getting around that he stole the Golden Saddle's intellectual property. He should have been sued, not just had his billboard defaced.

I continue to find Eddie distasteful, and the neighbor girl he's crushing on isn't much better. My dislike may stem from the fact that I don't like rap music, so given that the show's soundtrack is basically rap puts me off.

We recently got Ducktails on DVD. The only thing I remembered about the show was Scrooge McDuck swimming in his money.  Shockingly, it happens like once in the whole series.  I screamed at the TV when it was the one scene they showed.

Yeah, the dive is in the opening credits, which is probably why it's such a memorable scene despite only happening once. So it struck me as entirely reasonable that's the 2 seconds they showed.
