Tim's character is 17 in the book and Armie's is 24.

I guess he looks 17-ish. Possibly younger. I didn't think he looked that scrawny on stage. But Hammer looks much older than 24 (he's actually 30) so with Hammer's character looking aged up and Tim's character looking age-appropriate to aged down there's a wider discrepancy (at least to me) than in the book. Based on the trailer, there doesn't seem to be anything predatory but with all the sexual content that may or may not be in the movie once they get together I feel like it will be a bit uncomfortable... at least for me.

Re: Marjorie Prime

I missed this when it was a play. Not going to lie. The cast has my attention... the trailer less so. I was confused while watching it. I thought it was like Her and Walter was just a voice. But it turns out he's more of an android/robot?

Re: Surburbicon

That... did not go where I thought it was going and it made me laugh twice. In.

RE: LBJ

On the one hand, I admire the makeup work. On the other hand, I still see all the actors through the hair and makeup. Also, there's something a little tiresome about trotting out the same (let's be frank... white, male) actors all the time. Also, are all these other guys in the movie supposed to be tall? Because I feel like LBJ should look taller. Also, like more of a dick. (They hinted at it a little with the bathroom thing.) But as biopics go, I don't hate it. It seems like it occupies a middle ground. Not too cloying or sentimental or Hollywood-ified. Not too serious and dramatic and trying to be important. Just a solid movie, if one with a narrow scope.

Armie does look older.  If they stick to the book, it shouldn't come off as predatory because Tim's character is kind of special given his background and parents.  While there's a physical attraction, the book highlights that intellectual one quite a bit more in the beginning.  Based on the reviews, I suspect they pulled that off but only time will tell.  I see they're releasing it on Nov. 24th.  That's pretty much admitting they're aiming straight for the Oscars.

I scrolled up the thread and couldn't find this trailer, so I went to youtube and watched it, and I'm confused by what you mean. Not that the idea of, say, Jamie Foxx playing LBJ isn't hilarious, or even Taraji Henson come to that, but it is a biopic.

I don't know... it's like, we've got a historical drama. OK, who've we got? Jeffrey Donovan, C. Thomas, Howell, Bill Pullman, Rich Sommer, Richard Jenkins... Cool, work done. I don't know, it's something about the combination of historical stories that "require" a lack of diversity and trotting out the same actors (which I get is something that's going to happen for anything that's vaguely prestige fare because they want some "famous" faces). But I'm a little bored. I do think it's better than the glossy biopics full of famous people which I can rarely get into because it just feels like a bunch of famous actors play-acting. But again, I think it goes to how LBJ falls into this safe middle ground. I would watch it on a plane. Or Netflix.

Molly's Game looks sadly generic too me. I know Sorkin is directing this in addition to writing, but I think he's the type of person who really benefits from having a powerful collaborator to keep him in check (eg. David Fincher, Tommy Schlamme). And while I liked Jessica Chastain a lot in A Most Violent Year, I'm not sure that these power bitch roles she seems to love (this, AMVY, Miss Sloane, her upcoming Xavier Dolan film) are what she's best suited to. Idris Elba was the highlight of that trailer for me.

Yeah, Jessica Chastain is one of my favorite actresses, but during the entire trailer, I jus came away with the impression that she is just trying way too hard to be badass.  It doesn't feel as natural as her other, more superior performances, like the one in Zero Dark Thirty.

Other then that, I could totally tell from the dialogue that is was totally written by Aaron Sorkin.  For better or worse, he really does have a recognizable style.  But him out on his own is interesting, because I'm wondering if he'll be able to keep his weaknesses in check or will we be seeing a variation of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip on the big screen.

The Florida Project

This got major raves in Cannes, overshadowing some of the much more hyped English-language films. And hey, Willem Dafoe playing a good guy!

I haven'tseen any reviews for this yet but A24 really is on a roll with its films and that's good enough for me. In fact, this film might do what Lionsgate was aiming for with The Glass Castle.

The Meyerowitz Stories: I can't get a read on the acting or story. I did have a few seconds when I first saw Dustin Hoffman when I couldn't place him. I thought he was Harvey Keitel at first. Is this covered under the Adam Sandler/Netflix deal or is it something else?

mother!: Guys, it's real creepy that Jennifer Lawrence looks like she could be the daughter of most of her on-screen love interests. I can't get past it. Also, her acting looks... bad.

Darkest Hour: Doesn't sound like Oldman is trying to mimic his voice. Good makeup job... not Churchill but very well done. Doesn't look like a mask or anything. Seems like mid-level Oscar bait... not that great of an actual movie.

The Star: Well... hrm. The animation is pretty good. I like all the hair texture, etc. The voice cast is diverse and they also have very different fan bases they could possibly attract which is an interesting strategy. But if you wanted to tell this story from the perspective of the animals (not that I'm sold on that premise to begin with) I don't think this is how you do it. It's not a Veggie Tales which is an easy sell to the Christian market. And I don't really see the appeal for general audiences. So who is this for? Maybe it's just a bad trailer?

The Death of Stalin: Seems amusing. I bet I'd be more into it if I watched Veep. I do think it will be a little tough to remember it's in Russia when everyone is using their own accents.

The Florida Project: It seems very... naturalistic. But I guess I like kids when they're either a little older or they're more like regular actors. Basically, I don't think I like kids enough to sit through this.

Molly's Game: I don't know if it's the way the movie was shot or the way the trailer was cut together or if it's just her performance but Chastain seems kind of... dull. I almost wish it were glossier and more Hollywood. More Ocean's Eleven. Be more charming, make it more fun. Like, imagine Julia Roberts or Catherine Zeta Jones in their primes in this part. Right now it doesn't seem like an Oscar-worthy dramatic performance nor a fun, charismatic one. She only seems to light up when she's smiling. But then, I didn't like The Social Network. Sigh... I'd rather see that Chastain/Elba rom com. Also, woo, Brian d'Arcy James!

Bodied: Don't entirely get what it's about (the plot, I mean) but I'm into it. That's how to do a trailer.

Our Souls At Night: Also have no idea what it's about but I'm into it. Jane Fonda looks gorgeous. That's a great wig. It had a good vibe. I hope that trailer's not misleading because I would totally just watch a sweet romance with those two.

Escape Room: LOL. It was only a matter of time but still... so dumb.

Tulip Fever (Red Band):

Pretty shameless but I guess nothing else has worked!

I just saw the trailer for this. Looks like overacted soft-porn with a religious persecution story shoe-horned in. I could be wrong, but that's the impression I got from the trailer. Yawn.

Hearing the buzz, I checked out the trailer. I don't think I would be as into it without hearing that it's getting positive buzz. But I did know that watching the trailer, I'm kind of into it. What they show of the creature looks great. Sally Hawkins looks like she's giving a good performance. And I miss mainstream romances that aren't La La Land (which isn't really a romance). To me the French music in the trailer is giving me an Amelie vibe that makes me think date movie or something I happily catch on Netflix. I'm not expecting something great but something very pleasant and a bit quirky with an edge that's being hidden in this trailer. I'm curious how far they'll go with the scientists and the ending of the movie since I know del Toro likes horror.

Lady Bird

I was stoked to find out that this is actually a period teen coming-of-age drama set n the early 2000s. I love teen indie movies set in the past, and I've been wanting one set during my "time".

They did a great job of dressing the characters to give them a Y2K era vibe without being too obvious.

Re: The Man Who Invented Christmas

If that woman in the house and in bed with him is his wife and not his mistress, I call shenanigans. Given the publication date, I guess this would be before the worst of their marital troubles, but still. It's well known that he was a dick to her.

Re: Lady Bird

Saoirse's accent is quite good. I do find a slight oddness in the name choice since the most famous Lady Bird I can think of is Lady Bird Johnson. Strong cast of theater actors. As far as these types of movies go, this feels like a strong entry. Greta Gerwig seems to be carving out a place for herself as a Lena Dunham that everyone doesn't get mad at.

Re: Marshall

As far as these somewhat glossier biopics go, it looks good. I think it helps that it's focused on one particular case and the particulars of the case evoke To Kill A Mockingbird. It's weird to see Kate Hudson in a significant role again. Could she make a comeback? I will say that a lot of what I liked about the trailer was supported by the music and I'm not sure how well it will all work with the typical underscoring of melodramatic piano and violins.

Re: You Were Never Really Here

Not for me. I'm sure it'll get praise but... it's not for me. I don't get where they're going with the human trafficking and possible mental illness and it has none of the fun that I want from my crime/detective stories.

Re: Jungle

Oh, boy. Some of the setting/visuals are appealing and make it seem like the movie is somewhat well shot but... oh, boy. Racial/cultural politics aside I've never been into Hatchet style survival stories.

Re: Mudbound

Seems like one of those things everyone will say is great and I will never watch it.

Yup, so it's official, I will never see the word "Mudbound" without thinking it says "Mudblood".

Agreed about the clothes, and I love Ronan's shitty Kool-Aid dye job, which feels just perfect for the time and character. There are a lot of bits in the trailer that feel very authentic to me and will (along with that terrific cast) hopefully set this apart from being a generic quirky-girl indie comedy.

Do you know when this movie is due out? Also if Rami is doing the vocals or lip syncing? I'm excited to see it as I love the music. Thx

My understanding is that it will be Freddie's vocals but Rami is in the recording studio to get the lip syncing down.  This movie is backed and produced by the remaining members of Queen. Sort of like what Angela Bassett did to play Tina Turner.

I look forward to it. Freddie Mercury's duet with David Bowie's 'Under Pressure' is in my top ten. Thumbs up for the info. Glad that the group Queen is on board with this biopic. It will be their ideal of real, and I'm sure a good story to tell, but then there's the real story.

I agree with you here.  Part of me likes the idea of Queen being involved and part of me thinks we may get a sanitized version of things.  Rumor is that is what forced Sacha Baron Cohen to leave the movie, he wanted to go darker with Freddie's story and Queen didn't.  Here is hoping for a good movie overall.

Re: Downsizing

At first I thought it was going to be dumb like We Bought a Zoo. But it actually seems like a cool concept. I'm not sure if it's going to be a comedy or thoughtful/intellectual or uplifting/life lesson-y. It certainly doesn't seem like there's going to be some kind of horror/thriller twist to it unless they really want to surprise the audience when they get in the theater.

Re: The Current War

Ooph. Cumberbatch's American accent... God, that trailer was unbelievably boring. It was a struggle to get through those few minutes. Glad Tesla's in it. Not into it if Edison's not an asshole.
