Small Talk: The Prayer Closet

This is a reminder that the Politics Policy is still in effect.

I understand with recent current events there may be a desire to discuss political social media posts of those in the Duggar realm- this is not the place for those discussions. If you believe someone has violated forum rules, report them, do not respond or engage.

Political discussion is not allowed in this forum- this includes Small Talk topics. Please stay in the spirit of the policy- I have noticed a tendency for some to follow the letter but not the spirit.

Finally found an ad blocker that's easily disabled if I need to print. But it really shouldn't have come to this. They're just going to drive people away.

I'm so glad you found a "fix".  You are right, it shouldn't be this hard.  What's the deal, anyway.

I had a long conversation with an Apple tech last night.  I couldn't get on to Safari on my phone--at all--and she found the setting that had mysteriously changed.  She surprised me by saying that she never uses Safari on her phone.  She uses the Chrome app and loves it.  I'm not a Safari user on my Mac because I don't like the cluttered screen with Safari.  Now I may put another browser on my phone so I can ignore Safari.  The things you learn from the Apple techs.

I’m following the case that involves an arrest of a serial killer in ny. I thought this case would never be solved.

I saw that on the news.  Is serial killing more prevalent, or are they getting more press now?  They caught a serial kill in Stockton CA last year (quite near where I used to live).  I haven't followed the NY case very closely, but I am interested to get more facts.

My review: wow it was not that impressive. Why the Rods love the Olive Garden?

The Hunk probably fully appreciates the unlimited soup and breadsticks.  After my cousins group decided to try other restaurants (yay!), I've noticed that their lunch specials are cheaper than most restaurants, although many of their menu items are considerably more expensive.

Those mushrooms with your entree look good.

To anyone with a virtual hug to spare (or prayer if you're so inclined), I'd be grateful if you'd send it my way.

I'm trying to deal with a whole bunch of resentment towards a couple of people whom I felt were amongst my very closest friends.  For decades the four of us have been, I thought, best friends, our kids are like nieces and nephews, etc.  A month ago I was the only one not invited to the wedding of one of the "cousins".  I thought I had got through/over that, but now I find I'm excluded from another one.  I don't know what to do or think really.

I'm doing my best not to wallow in self-pity, but some old demons are scratching at my door.  Thank you.

@Leeds - I'm so sorry you are going through this. That sounds upsetting, especially when you don't know why. Is there someone in the group of friends that you would feel comfortable asking about this?

Thank you everyone for your support.

@BetyBee.  Yes, after I sleepless night, I've decided I need to talk to the fourth member of the group.  Then at least (I hope) I can have some information to deal with, and not just my imagination.

@Leeds so sorry. And unexplained is painful. I just got similar by Mr lookeyloo's elderly father. Apparently after 41 years I am still "not family". No reason given.

I'm so sorry, @lookeyloo, especially after all the heartache with your son.

Cavendish is so beautiful @Scarlett45. Glad you had such a good trip and I totally get your relief at being home!

Absolutely. One gorgeous cat. Thanks for sharing that photo.

Also, thanks for the report on your trip. It's great to hear that you enjoyed it and that your mom had a good time. Seems like she really needed that boost. I know you did so much to make it happen. As your mom's contemporary in age, I just want to reach through the screen and hug you in gratitude for all you are doing for her. ❤️

That is all. Welcome home!!

How did your Mom do with a scooter, @Scarlett45?

She did well. She was more confident the second day than the first, but because she’s lost peripheral vision she’s cautious about turning, so doorways and elevators were difficult. Her spacial understanding is much poorer now, for example she will just stop in the middle and not pull over to the side of the path way.

But I think her skills will only improve as she continues to use it. Regular use is very different than once every 18months on vacation.

How did you transport the scooter? Those suckers are HEAVY!

You are so sweet. K, L and I are all very lucky to still have our mothers with us, and to have such wonderful ones. Not everyone is so lucky, so even when they work our last nerve, we try to stay respectful and appreciate them. L’s mom did not come because of her health issues- after a family wedding in 2019 she said she would never get on a plane again, but it would’ve been nice to have her there. L had charge of K’s Dad who’s the sweetest man, he could play Santa Clause. Again, to see them all so happy and enjoying themselves was worth it.

We didn’t bring our own. I already rented one because I didn’t think hers would arrive on time, and I wouldn’t want to damage hers at a location where they are easily rented. For a trip to a location that’s not Las Vegas or Disney World, I would take the battery and basket off and check it at the gate like a stroller or personal wheelchair. A young woman with CP has a YouTube channel- Chelsea Bear detailing how she travels independently with hers, and I’m 99% sure my mom has the same model. It comes a part in 5 pieces and I put it in the car.

I totally forgot about renting! Yes, I've seen them in the casinos. 😃

The price is not unreasonable either.  You can also customize the rental to get a canopy for use on sunny days, a cup holder, bigger storage baskets.  Last one I rented actually had a couple of USB ports to charge the phone on it.  Very convenient.

How much do you get on a charge? Do you have to charge it overnight to get through multiple days?

Here is a story about a scooter - "borrowed" at Longwood gardens in Pennsylvania.  Went there about 2 years ago with elderly father in law.  It was supposed to have a full charge but it gave out after a little while.  He rode back to return it for a better one. Same deal. They have cords here and there to boost them back up.  Our thought was that the batteries are old and can't keep up a charge.  So, something to be aware of with a borrowed/rented one.

I've never tried to go overnight.  There's a cord with a plug that you use to plug it in in your hotel room or where ever to re-charge it overnight.  I've rented them at least half a dozen times and they were always fully charged and used them all day long, maybe 10 hours or so, going here and there without a problem.  The main place we used them was at Disney World where you can either rent at the park or contact a private vendor who will deliver it to the hotel.  Obviously, running around Disney, there's a lot of stopping and starting, we weren't continuously on the move, but never had a problem with the scooter dying.

Both the rental company and Disney give an 800 number to call if the scooter breaks down and they promise to come and get you and/or bring another one.  Never had to use it, but a couple people I know did and had no problems.  Someone came out in a reasonable amount of time and took care of it.

Yes you’re supposed to charge it when you go back to your room, or if you have a particularly long/active day, you charge it during meals. My mom has never had a problem with battery, but we always charge when we come back to the room for naps/the evening.

I also think when some people have a problem with charging capacity they have rented the wrong size- the larger capacity scooters cost more to rent, but it’s important to rent the proper one for your weight class if you are a bigger person. My friend’s Dad requires the scooter with a higher weight limit so she makes sure to get that for him, while her mom can fit into the standard.

So happy to hear that you, your mom, and family had such a good time in Vegas! We haven’t been there since Covid arrived, and we miss it! But always nice to come home to your own bed. 😊

I highly recommend the Park MGM if you are not smokers. It’s conveniently located, no smoking, mid price point and there’s an Eataly inside!(we have one in chicago but I hadn’t been since the pandemic). I don’t know if you’re familiar but Eataly is an Italian restaurant/market place/coffee shop where you can buy Italian products.
The food is excellent. You know me, “what are we eating and what are we wearing?”Are the two big questions of my life.

There is a Target across the strip which is where I got us snacks and water for the room while my Mom waited in the shade. Blimey that AC will chill you to the BONE and then it’s super hot outside!

My mini vacation to Lake Lure and Chimney Rock last week was magical! I can’t believe how much it helped me. Here’s a pic taken from our dock behind our lake house. I had heard noises behind the trees a couple of days before the bear came out!  The neighbors said he’d been around a while lately. And we had no bear spray. Lol

Sunday K rented a cabana (which I have never done!) and it was amazing. There was a mister, mini fridge, sofas, snacks etc.

Thanks for the great trip report, @Scarlett45, so glad you had what sounds like a great time.

(I have to say that when I read the sentence quoted above, my dirty little mind completely misinterpreted "mister" as another service that might be provided in Vegas!!!!)

Does anyone have any thoughts on this dilemma?  So, I got my new fridge delivered last weekend.  It works great, though I hate the stainless steel finish, but I’ll live with that. The issue is that there is a noise when the door is opened and closed.  It’s not super loud, but loud enough to be annoying.  The reason seems to be that the little button that gets pressed in when the door shuts that cuts off the light gets hit by a shelf on the door of the fridge. It’s built in  There’s no way to avoid it.  I put a fabric bandaid over it and it doesn’t help.  The reason this happens is that they switched the opening of the door to open from the right, instead of the left.  The specifications say it’s reversible and I asked. The store model opens from the left and doesn’t make the sound, since the button is on the right.  This sound is obviously due to me needing the door side switched, but I need it that way for proper flow.

Home Depot is coming on Saturday to evaluate and do an adjustment.  I anticipate that I’ll need to decide, can I tolerate the noise? Or, can I tolerate switching the door back to its original state of opening from the left?  The downside is that opening from the left is not conducive to free flow in the kitchen. It would be awkward….reaching to the left.  Not good. But, the noise would be gone.  I studied a lot of options and I’m not willing to go with a different fridge. Long story…..Also, this is not a primary residence, though it could be one day. Just used on weekends.   I just can’t decide what is going to bug me the most.  Any thoughts?

My humble opinion is that you'll get used to the little click and soon won't notice it at all, but having a door opening "the wrong way" will bug you for ever!

Are the shelves on the door adjustable?

(edited)

I would call the manufacturer and ask them if this is  a known issue, and is it supposed to do this.  Or check for complaints on line.  There may be a fix someone has found.  Have your answers before the store people show up so they can't say it is "normal" and walk away.    If the manufacturer says it should not do this, demand a replacement.

Edited to add:  There are usually owners groups on line.  Be sure to search with your model number.  I have found a lot of answers to questions for different appliances.

@SunnyBeBe, I hope they get the door fixed right for you.

Today I bought a roof top cargo box for my minivan. I've wanted one for awhile. I got a (barely) used Thule, saved about $200 over the cost of a new one. I have no prior experience with these things, but the guy at the shop where I bought it, showed me how it all works. I'll need some help to hoist it up onto the roof and lock it in place, but otherwise I can handle everything else.

The other sweet part of this deal is that my minivan (a Dodge Grand Caravan) came from the factory with not only roof rails, but crossbars. I just had to swing the crossbars out into place and secure them. The box fastens onto those. As the shop guy said, having crossbars already, means I didn't have to pay a few hundred more bucks for crossbars to mount the box on. Yay!

Obviously I can't have the box on top of the car and put the car in our condo building garage; the clearances there are too low. I brought it home in the back of the car and now it's up here in my living room. It only weighs 34 pounds and is easy to move around on my little wheeled cart/dolly. It's a bit bigger than I thought I'd like but I'm happy with the size.

I've just cleaned it up and will store it - with some closet Macgyvering - until I need to use it. I'm very happy to have it. I'm hoping to take some road trips when the weather gets a bit cooler. The rooftop box will carry a lot of my campsite stuff and a some other things, leaving the back of the minivan less crowded.

So that's my silly little accomplishment for today. The next item on the minivan camping wishlist is a side awning to. use when camping. I've been researching these for awhile, and watching YT videos of vanlife folks who've used various kinds. They range from spendy brand name retractable awnings that mount on the side of the roof, to cheap strange-looking things, to DIY solutions with tarps and poles and zip ties. I've decided that although I don't want to spend to the max, I think the cheap and DIY stuff would be a waste of time and money because they're flimsy and not durable. There's a shop not far from here that sells them, so I'll start there with a lot of questions and see what they say.

We are in Mexico with family vacation with Sweet Son's brother and family. He and daughter in law and granddaughter (age 20) watched the Duggar thing like we did - to snark. So we talked a little about it here. Well last night I had a vivid dream that I went to visit Joy and Austin after little Gunny's birth. It was the most pleasant dream experience. They were happy to see me, even Austin. And I guess they knew I was a Jewish grandma who had a gay son. But we visited, I admired the baby, Giddy and Evy were sweet and normal and Austin gave me some garlic he grew. Then I got in my car to go home and woke up. Oh also we had beach pictures made on request of daughter in law (who is the daughter I never knew I wished I had) and two were of me and Mr lookeyloo "kissing".  All I could think of was how it it looks in the pictures - like Derick and Jill. Because we Were on beach with family watching and didn't want to go "all the way" so I guess it is possible they like each other different in private. We do.

I've been off visiting my kids and grandkids for a week. I'm headed home tomorrow. The grands are all so sweet and fun, but I'm also looking forward to getting home to the peace and quiet of our home and to being with my husband and our kitty. The weather has been gorgeous, but it's hot at night here. I'm upstairs and there's no a/c. It cooled off yesterday and became better for sleeping. The kids range from ages 4 to 14. I've gotten to spend some one on one with every age!

My niece called in tears today. My sil (her aunt) is demanding money she claims to have "lent" to her mother who passed suddenly in December. My sil is very controlling and selfish. The sister who passed away left a house with a big mortgage, credit card debt and student loans. There will be very little left after probate. It's an ugly situation that will likely end their relationship. Some people!
