Ooo! One more thing!
Sometimes episodes are listed out of order on a device or Roku app.
Did you try scrolling/arrowing up as well as down?

The list literally only included one episode.  I haven't tried searching the other way yet.  That might make a difference.

Even so, try highlighting that one episode and arrowing up.
I was so sure there was only one episode of a show in Peacock, but for that show it turned out if I arrowed up the others were there, hiding.

This is a shot in the dark but is there any chance you got accidentally signed out of your paid version?  What you're describing sounds like what we "peons" get on the free version.

Maybe.  I'll try checking on that.

Huh, I'll try that too.

The last couple of days, my Roku TV, YouTube app, and my PC have been spatting. I have the PC on, then turn on the TV, then open YouTube and the connection keeps dropping. If it was just YouTube dropping the connection, I could deal, but it takes the PC offline, too, and I have to turn off one device or the other.

I can find things online about the Roku/YouTube conflict but no one seems to have the more important problem of YouTube crashing the wifi on the PC. I have restarted the TV, checked for updates for both Roku and YT and both claimed to be up to date. Next thing would be iuninstalling and reinstalling the YT app, I guess.

Now, if I don't have the PC on but do have the ROku TV running YouTube, and then turn on the PC, everything seems to be OK. WTF? And why did this just start happening yesterday?

I've had troubles with YouTube on my Roku TV starting months ago and just gave up on it.
But I don't have the subscription YouTube, so I'm okay watching stuff on my laptop or phone.
Anyway, just thought I'd share, FWIW.

I remember! I got premium just to be commercial-free and everything has been fine until this week. I did get bumped off of Prime a couple of times last weekend but the PC wasn't knocked offline when it happened. If there are more issues today. I'll un- and reinstall the app.

I'm glad I paid for a year in advance since I had an offer from American Express for a nice sized discount. My cashback from one of the sites I use for it is in limbo though....😕

Even though this is the first increase since 2020 it's after they went on a cancellation spree and pulled other stuff from the site.

Just as an FYI: I know a $1 increase is less than increases from some other streamers.

HBO Max Announces Price Hike to 'Provide Even More Culture-Defining Programming' to Subscribers

Quote

Effective Jan. 12, the price of a new HBO Max ad-free monthly subscription in the U.S. will increase from $14.99 to $15.99, the streaming service announced Thursday.

Existing HBO Max subscribers who currently pay $14.99 per month will see their monthly rate increase to $15.99 beginning with their next billing cycle, on or after Saturday, Feb. 11.

For those keeping track at home, that is more than the monthly rate for Netflix’s standard, ad-free subscription tier, which currently costs $15.49/month.

I finally subbed to HBO last month and I'm struggling to find things I want to watch. I don't really get what's so great about HBO. But I'm feeling cranky in general and I'm not really liking other services more.

I think if you really just want to see one or two things on a service, the only way not to feel like you're over-subscribed is to compare it to the cost of going out to the movies, because otherwise, it's like zillions of unwanted stuff you have to pick through and you wonder why you're paying for all that stuff you don't care about, just to see one or two things.

HBO tends to be heavier stuff. I don't know if I'd subscribe myself, but I'm glad I have access through my daughter's household.

Some HBO stuff I've watched:

  • Barry
  • Chernobyl
  • Kaley Cuoco's The Flight Attendant is on HBO if you just want a bit of escapism.
  • Perry Mason (with a new season starting soon)
  • White Lotus
  • True Detective

I noticed "murder" was a common word in the descriptions -- 20 of those shows are about murder.  But that's only about eight percent of the listed shows, so less than half the percentage of broadcast shows.  And the really nice thing is, unlike on the networks, most of those shows are from the perspective of someone other than cops.  Since studies consistently show cop shows often result in a disturbingly warped view of the criminal justice system among viewers, kudos to HBO.  (I'm still not signing up, but kudos.)

I liked Six Feet Under.

Trying to get into Barry, but the first few episodes are kind of repetitive and I am not interested in the insispid acting class buddies or the annoying criminals. I think Barry's attempts to become part of the non-criminal world are interesting, his fish out of water lack of social skills makes him an interesting character, but so far I just haven't gotten caught up in it.

I don't mind heavy, though. It just has to be interesting.

I hate it when stuff like that happens.  It seems to always be some kind of glitch going on…..whether cable, phone, internet, streaming, etc.  for me.  My dad cheers me on.  He’s amazed when I am able to sort it out and fix things.  I sure get enough practice.  Lol.  Lately, his tv wouldn’t come on and I had to press, reboot, etc.

So, maybe some of you can help me with my latest issue.  It’s so simple yet…..I had an original power cord and adapter that came with my Firestick.  It stopped working. The input kept going out, then back in.  I tried my newest Firestick power cord and problem solved.  I ordered a new one off Amazon that was advertised for Firesticks, but it doesn’t work.  I have to return it.  So, I’m back to using that same cord that goes with a different Firestick. I have to move it around depending on which room I’m in. So not practical.  I also bought one in a store..,think Dollar General and that one doesn’t work either!  I hesitate to buy another one until I figure out the problem.  I’m not amused.

I have not used a Firestick, but have used an external Roku, so similar, I would imagine.

Have you checked the points of input for either dust or corrosion?
Of course, be very cautious when "removing" either so you don't damage delicate connections. YouTube should demonstrate safe techniques for your specific brands.
A few months ago I removed a surprising amount of lint from the charging port of my iPhone.

P.S. I love that your Dad appreciates your expertise. 🥰

I don’t think it’s the points of input, based on my tests. But, thanks for your suggestion.

The actual Firestick works with my one cord fine.  It just doesn’t work right with any other power cord that I’ve been able to find.  I’ve switched input from HDMI1 to HDMI2.   Same problem.  Does the same thing on different TVs too.  It’s sounds bizarre.  It’s 2023 and I can’t find a working power cord!

There’s one upside to having so many issues.  You learn a lot of tricks. Lol  I think I may be the most tech savvy in my office now!  Which is crazy, since I’m not the youngest.  Lol

Three ideas:

It might be the jack, not the cord?

Intermittent things tend to be loose in one way or another.

I wonder if there's an adapter that might bridge between the device and one of the other cords?

I’ll check some things again tomorrow.  But, with switching things around, the Firestick works.  It works in different TVs.  I’ll keep searching, because moving the same cord from room to room is getting old.  Lol

Not sure if this has been discussed recently.  If you have Discovery Plus, are you happy with it?  There are so many shows where D+ is the last to get the episodes and I've had access to them elsewhere.  Am I the last holdout?  I'm ready to hit the cancel button because I'm not seeing the point.

I have access to it via my mom's account; it's not something I'd pay for.  The Food Network shows I watch are all available there before they air on FN (available on D+ in the morning as opposed to airing in the evening) and without commercials, so I like it for that.

I canceled because I wasn't watching.  It was neat for a minute to go back and watch old shows not on TV anymore.

I subscribe through my Amazon account, but that means having to navigate it through the incredibly crappy Amazon interface.  I was in there yesterday trying to see if anything was new, and discovered they weren't marking as read episodes I've already seen.  If they're not at least going to track where I left off, there's no reason for me not to drop it from Amazon and consider the free-standing version.

OTOH, since I found almost nothing I wanted to watch, maybe just drop it altogether.

I signed up for discovery, with an amazon deal, and quickly cancelled, because of the ads. I feel the same way about Peacock (if you pay anything, there should be no ads), but at least with the movies, they only run them at the beginning.

I’m really disappointed in the Amazon viewing options. Most of what I find there is to rent or purchase. I like the free delivery and that’s the only reason I still have it.

It has received excellent reviews and I like it quite a bit.  So it does what it wants to do really well but only you'd know if you'd love it.

But if someone were to ask, I'd recommend Peacock for Poker Face and The Traiters (US version).

Heh. Aw shucks, guys.

More:
In most of the episodes, Columbo (Natasha Lyonne as "Charlie") doesn't show up until a third of the way through.
And it's also part The Fugitive.

So, since the last of 10 episodes drops March 9 (newsweek.com/poker-face-release-schedule-episode-guide-peacock-natasha-lyonne-rian-johnson-1776030)
I would recommend maybe planning to subscribe to Peacock for just a month or 2, unless you get a good deal.

Also, NL's character is not formally a detective. She's messy like Columbo and she solves things with her smarts rather than a crime lab, and she's underestimated. Also, Columbo did most of his work convicting spoiled rich people (which I loved). NL doesn't move in those circles... the opposite, really. All of these things make the show interesting and likable, but it doesn't have the same atmosphere of Columbo, which I also love.

Paramount+ and Showtime to Merge

* The Showtime cable network will be rebranded as Paramount+ With Showtime. All that changes is the name.

* The Paramount+ Premium tier ($9.99/month with no ads) will also be rebranded as Paramount+ With Showtime, and host Paramount+ and Showtime original series.

* The Paramount+ Essential tier ($4.99/month with ads) will host Paramount+ original series only. Nothing changes.

The current Showtime apps are supposed to disappear before the end of the year. No word yet if cable subscribers will get the new version included but it seems likely since the networks name is also changing.

The cheaper, ad-supported tier will be Paramount+ only.

I'll be interested to see how this plays out.  In our 2-person household, we have one smart TV, 3 Fire Sticks, 2 smart phones, one laptop, one desktop, and one tablet.  Do I need to set a reminder to go around to each device once a month and make sure we've logged in?  Or maybe they're saying, a particular device (that hadn't been logged in recently) will be blocked until you do some kind of two-factor-authentication?

That also doesn't make sense for hotels and vacation rentals, where one of the amenities is often a smart TV that you can watch your own streamers on.

Okay, maybe it would help if I actually read the linked article...  It's both better and worse than I was guessing (italics mine):

Quote

Can You Still Use Netflix While Traveling?

Signing into Netflix outside of your home may lead to the device in use being blocked from Netflix. This could prevent you from signing into new devices while traveling, but Netflix has devised a workaround.

Traveling users who want to use Netflix on a hotel smart TV, company laptop, etc. can request a temporary code from the service when signing in. This will give them access to their account for seven consecutive days.

How Can You Prevent Netflix from Blocking Your Devices?

Signing into home Wi-Fi at least once every 31 days on your devices will make them “trusted devices,” which Netflix will remember and leave unblocked.

If your device has been blocked incorrectly, you’ll need to contact Netflix in order to get it unblocked.

Update:  Netflix Claims It Errantly Posted Password Sharing Rules that Would Block Devices Outside of Subscribers’ Homes in U.S.

Quote

Netflix will be rolling out enhanced efforts to curb password sharing in the United States by the end of March; that much we know for sure. That was confirmed by co-CEO Greg Peters in January as part of the company's fourth-quarter 2022 earnings report. However, the exact specifics as to what those efforts will look like have yet to be revealed by the world’s largest streamer; at least not officially.

Earlier this week, the streamer’s official domestic Help Center detailed new protocols to prevent people from using someone else’s account to access Netflix’s platform. The new rules would require subscribers to verify their home devices every month and devices outside of the home would be blocked and encouraged to create an account of their own.

The news that Netflix would be blocking devices without a full explanation of what that would mean for people who travel for a living, students in college who live away from their parents, people with multiple homes, and more was not well received by users — whether they were subscribers or those who stream on a subscriber’s account.

However, those new rules were removed from the Netflix website as of Wednesday, Feb. 1, leading to confusion as to exactly what the world’s largest streamer was planning for its already-announced initiative. It turns out, according to a Netflix spokesperson, that those rules are in fact currently in place, just not yet in the United States.

“For a brief time yesterday, a help center article containing information that is only applicable to Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, went live in other countries,” the spokesperson told The Streamable. “We have since updated it.”

So, it may happen here eventually, or, depending on how things go there (they've been testing all sorts of things in certain Latin American countries and tweaking as they go), maybe not.

Good luck with all of that Netflix if those are really the methods you're planning to enact to try to stop sharing this late in the game. People are already pissed off with how they handle cancelling shows and price increases when they've lost a lot of their content to other services. I've been sharing an account with a friend for a few months and when I started it was the first time I had ever used Netflix. These supposed new rules don't make me inclined to get my own account at all.

Edited to add: My laughing reaction to the post above mine is due to Netflix claiming they errantly posted those rules on the US site. I wonder if they had employees checking social media to gauge peoples reactions and ended up putting out that statement after seeing what I'm guessing were a majority of negative reactions in response.

I've been done with Netflix for some time now and don't plan to ever start again.  Gone are the days when it was a tossup between Netflix and Hulu.  (Remember when Netflix revolutionized DVD rentals by mailing them to you and you just easily sent them back in their bright red pre-addressed postage-paid envelopes?)

Netflix has turned into Netfux and the streaming options are so many and out of control now.  I finished all my shows I watched many seasons of and have moved on.

I have access through my parents' account, and I have a long list on my profile, but there's no way I'd pay for my own account.  I'd just go back to watching at my parents' house when I'm staying there.*  But if it was a small fee each month to add me as an authorized non-household user to my parents' account (which Netflix is offering in some countries, although I'm not sure how small the amount actually is), I'd be fine with that.

(*Which is what I did for years.  Only in summer of 2020 when courts being closed meant work was really slow, and my cat being sick meant I was spending time in bed during the day but there's hardly anything worth watching on TV during those hours and I'd basically run out of DVDs to re-watch, did I finally hook up an old Fire stick in there [I have no Smart TVs] so I could check out streaming content.  And I only downloaded the apps for things that are free, or that I had access to via someone else's account.  Now, I like having it, for when I can't get back to sleep in the wee hours - again, when there's nothing worth watching on TV - and don't feel like getting up to get a DVD.  But none of these streaming services are worth it to me that I'd pay for them if I could no longer access through someone else's account [in addition to Netflix and Discovery+ via my parents, I have Prime and Paramount+ via one of my best friends].)

I agree with limiting the number of people outside your household you can share your password with (but it's rather silly that if a whole bunch of non-existent siblings and I lived with my parents they'd be allowed to give us all their password, but because little ol' me is not even ten miles down they road, they're not supposed to), but not disallowing it entirely.  At least at this point; if Netflix was new and one household only was their policy out of the gate, I'd find that a perfectly reasonable position.  (Indeed, I was surprised to find it was allowed.)  But they did, and in fact they used to encourage it (their whole "sharing is caring" campaign or whatever it was).  So of course they're getting a lot of push-back.

I still have that.  I'm working my way through a list of things that I don't want to buy, just rent, and aren't available for streaming anywhere (or at least on anything I have).

Remember when the whole family gathered around the television set and watched the same shows together?  (I'm that old that I lived through this too, even before the DVD player was invented!)

I never engaged in password sharing but I think the crack down is ridiculous.  It's like they want to get each person to pay their high price with no shared account profiles and separate accounts for everyone.

Seems like they would have to have the webpage ready in order for someone to accidentally make it live. They had to know as soon as the new rules were announced for Latin America it would be huge news. I could see them using Latin America as beta testers to work out kinks but these are probably the rules they intended for everyone eventually.

They created the password sharing FAQ with country pull down menu rather than just updated the relevant country websites. The announcement for the US was probably close.
