S08.E17: Don't Drink The Water

What was I even watching and why am I still here?

Although to say one positive thing, at least here I can get away from constant obsession and speculation over when Buck and Eddie will get together. I hate when shipping stuff eats a fandom alive, and I have favorite couples too, but it’s getting to be a bit much and tiresome.

I don't remember the kid who steals laundry.

I think he was the shopping cart kid that was harassing people that didn't put their carts away.

I didn't like Angry Athena either.

Yes, Bobby made an appearance at the beginning. Calling everyone together for dinner at the station as they needed to eat together. Then it switched to Buck sitting alone at the  big dinner table

Man, all the callbacks

  • Full Moon Yoga Babies
  • Smurf Girl
  • Cart Cop
  • Power Outage Chain Gang (but with water!)

Was Flaming Bath Gal a callback to anything?

I wish Buck had just talked to the priest about Bobby - although I guess he might not have known Bobby used to talk things out with that priest. Because I think it would have helped to talk with someone who knew him, but wasn't part of the family. Who knew how to counsel people.

And Athena will never see the hypocrisy of her lecturing Graham on "being stuck". Stop blaming Chim for Bobby's actions because you can't blame Bobby.

I loathe Buck. I was so happy when Eddie called him out. He's an emotionally stunted vampire.

Athena's house makes me sad. I keep thinking about how the first one burned down and how Bobby had a heart attack after he pulled Athena out. Like the man said, his time was always borrowed.

That dentist scene pissed me off. How are you going to do a root canal on someone without novocain?

I'm at the point where I'm reading here before deciding whether to watch the ep on my DVR. So, thank you all for your service! (If anyone can't stand to watch, say, Grey's any more, I can report back on that once I watch last night's ep!)

I say this not having watched, but does Athena recognize that *Bobby* made the choice to save Chimney, knowing he likely was doomed? It's not like Chimney went and snatched the vial from his hand. I know it's grief talking, but still...and Chim has a child and another on the way, too.

I actually thought parts of this were decent - specifically, the calls. They felt like classic 9-1-1 stories. The water on fire, the kid stealing laundry, stuff like that is what made 9-1-1 what it was.

What I didn't need or want is all the drama over Bobby's death. I get that they want to mine all the drama from it but it's not something this show's audience wants to see.

Yes, she does. People are acting like she tried to throttle Chim with her bare hands. It wasn't that severe. It's just that when she looks at Chimney she feels Bobby's loss even more. She literally says "I know it's not fair but when I look at Chimney all I see is the man who isn't there."

Question for anyone with knowledge of firefighting:  Would there have been adequate water pressure after all those hoses were connected to a source almost a mile away?

I don't have a ton of knowledge of fire fighting but my understanding was that each truck a long the way was a pumper truck and was basically used to boost the pressure to account for the pressure drop along the line. Although I was kind of surprised that one hose was enough water for that huge fire.

Do I get it? Sure. Do I want to see it? No. This isn't what I want from this show. I didn't start watching this show because it was a soap opera drama. I don't get it. They turned this show into something fun to watch into something painful to watch. Do they think the audience will be impressed by this change in direction?

It wouldn't be. And shooting water through the windows, even with multiple hoses, wouldn't get the job done for a fire that had been raging that long through a building that size. I couldn't believe the sighs of relief as though they'd solved it.

Why is Maddie running the fire department? She should be taking the call and telling them where to go, how does she know how and where they are supposed to hook their hoses too ? I have my doubts a 911 operator can pull up blueprints for every home and building in seconds. My husband is a police officer and said the police or fire take over once they find the location and he has never had the operator give him directions on how to do his job or offer to pull up blueprints.

Funny story- it’s Saturday morning and I wake up too early for a day off so I’m lying in bed catching up on tv shows. I’m watching this about an earthquake and fire water when my house starts shaking and a loud rumbling noise occurs. My first thought is a big obnoxious truck going down my road but I check Facebook and we just had a 4.1 earthquake!

I’m not arguing for anyone to keep watching the show. I don’t believe in trying to convince grown folks to do anything. My comment was meant only as a reply to the poster who wasn’t sure they were going to watch the episode because I thought the description of Athena’s behavior lacked context.

People keep calling her Angry Athena but the truth is she Grieving Athena. But getting away from that…

One of the things I love about Angela Bassett is that she can deliver the most inane dialogue with full commitment. In this ep it was “Graham, if you’re reformed…then why was I called here for stolen jockstraps?” Seriously, go back and watch that clip. It’s glorious. Of course nothing will ever top the cruise ship episode where she shouted the phrase, “HE DOESN’T HAVE ANY DAMN DONGLE!!”

I’m in the check here first camp. But not sure I’ll record in the future — maybe the finale, but next season, forget it. There’s a Bobby-shaped hole in this show. The actors try (Ryan doesn’t succeed in my book, Oscar’s Buck as an “emotional vampire” is spot on, Angela isn’t enough to overcome this), I suppose Choi makes the most of this, but it isn’t enough.

When I want my old show back, I’ll catch reruns. They somehow managed to make rebar through the scull, fire truck on my legs and even a capsized ocean liner work. Bobby was the center and if he believed it, so could I.

This is similar to how I watch ER and SVU when I want to. I have been through all of ER one time and that was enough, so now I just watch Seasons 1-8 and skip most of the middle before picking up S15. With SVU I don’t really acknowledge much beyond Season 20. (Which, how is that still getting renewed?)

I'm also getting sick of the show, and I think it's time for it to retire.

I’m so sick of the Buck/Eddie will they/won’t they swallowing this show. But funny enough, the other day on Reddit, we were discussing how much Buck is babied in the show and by fans. He kinda lost me a few episodes back when he was throwing a fit about Eddie moving away.

So much of this episode felt like it was written a long time ago because the characters seemed to live in a different time.

Last week's Athena had a story about being stuck and I thought we had moved her through that stage but now she's stuck in her grief towards Chim being alive.

Chim, Ravi and Hen rolling their eyes over evaluating Gerrard feels like they're reacting to the Gerrard earlier in the season rather than the one who has been written as competent that last few episodes.  Don't get me wrong, I don't like Gerrard but the way they're writing them has been different.

As for the Buck and Eddie scenes, I thought Eddie was mostly out of pocket. It felt like he was lashing out at a different Buck from weeks ago. There were so many things I hated about the scene starting with him walking in without any groceries in his hand and getting mad at Buck for getting groceries for his own home.

I also scratched my head at him acting like Buck wouldn't be happy he got a job offer in El Paso considering months have gone by and Buck has encouraged him to stay in El Paso and do what it takes to repair his relationship with his son. He's not freeloading on Buck's couch because he's afraid Buck can't handle him leaving.  He's there because he thinks of LA as his home and it's wrong of him to put that on Buck. I also felt it was wrong that he told Buck people don't know to talk to him about their grief even though we know, through his conversation with Hen and Karen, that Buck has been trying to start discussions about grief.  I get that he feels guilty for not being there when Bobby died but again, that's through his own choices.

Even in the morning when he realized he had been mean, he couldn't even be normal and leave Buck a "be back later" note which is what one would normally say, especially since he didn't tell Buck he was flying Chris in.  Nope, he said "gone to the airport" and then mocked Buck for thinking that meant he left.  Well...yeah.  I think anyone would.

There is no will they/won't they on the show.  In fandom?  Yes but I don't see it on the show.

So is this how they keep Bobby around, by showing flashbacks of scenes we've never seen before. Meh..

Right, Buck. Bobby sent you a 2.8 earthquake as a sign. Never mind the other millions of people in the metro area who'd be affected too.

TMW a hunky firefighter drops through your skylight to rescue you from your flaming bathroom. Not quite like swiping right on a dating app but life is full of surprises, lol.

Ditto comments upthread, how did that one firefighter not know about the tainted water? Seems like all the fire stations would've been notified, no? Could the LAFD be liable for the additional damage he likely caused?

For a change they showed Maddie dispatching more trucks besides the 118. But yeah, it was odd how she's suddenly so knowledgeable about the mechanics of firetrucks and firefighter procedurers. Maybe they're setting it up for her to get promoted?

For me, it's not just that they killed off Bobby. It's more about the dramatic shift in tone, especially since the show moved to ABC. They sucked all of the fun out of it. Losing Bobby was just the last straw.

I could barely watch this episode. It's all melodrama and smarm and superdramatc music telling us how we are supposed to be feeling at every moment. It's like the whole episode was written by thirteen year old girls. (No offense to thirteen year old girls, but I think you know what I mean.)

And Buck needs to take several seats. This constant focus on how Buck is feeling his werry big fweelings all the time has gone beyond old at this point. I have come to loathe Buck and I really don't think that was what the writers were going for but there it is. It's like Maddie's cry face - they seem addicted to that aspect of her personality. The show has no there anymore, so they try to camoflauge it by relying on these crutches. Maddie crying. Buck whining and pouting. Athena saves the day all by her lonesome. Hen is superdupermedic, able to perform any surgical procedure right there by the curb in the pouring rain. (I keep waiting for the day she performs open heart surgery on the street using nothing but a ball point pen and a paper clip.)

I know it's an Angeleno thing, and the show has always been ridiculous about the range of the 118's calls, but Topanga Canyon was a weird stretch even for them. By the time the 118 got to Old Topanga Canyon road that woman would have been dead for at least an hour and her whole house burned down. They go to the San Fernando Valley, the South Bay, the West Side, Downtown, the Santa Clarita area.  I keep waiting for them to leave LA County altogether, like suddenly they are in Palm Springs or something. Anyway, Topanga lady was toast if she was waiting for the 118.

I waived most of the ridiculousness away when the show was fun to watch. Now that is practically a daytime soap opera I don't know if I can take much more. We'll see if the tone lightens up next season but if not I am definitely out for good.

I feel like this show is trying to do way too much. They want to have an ensemble cast, but zero in on a few characters. They want to be funny and wacky and full of action, but then create a situation where the characters would all need to take time off to grieve and process and feel their emotions properly.

Then they have a character (Eddie) act as an audience avatar by saying in the meanest way possible that the characters shouldn't or don't have time to grieve (which goes against the advice of real world psychologists.)

And like, I get it, we don't want to watch them grieve because it isn't fun and this show was supposed to be fun but realistically the characters would need time to grieve. Of course, being TV they could just put up a little sign that says "five weeks later" or whatever and move on to the fun stuff. But they won't because the writers mistakenly believe that we want drama. We don't. Please end this stupid awful story arc quickly and move on.

Anger is one of the 5 stages of grief, so she should be both.

We saw a little of Denial Athena last week. Maybe we'll see some Depressed Athena and Bargaining Athena, too.

I hate it when the writers take a character to the Acceptance stage too quickly, so seeing Acceptance Athena should be delayed for awhile.
