Dundalk, Maryland is making me laugh (I'm a native Baltimoron).  The only issue is there's a specific accent native to Dundalk and they didn't even try.  And the accent is kinda hilarious, so that's a shame.

No memorable sketches, but the host fit in really well and had a fun energy.

I think the last one was the best for me. Chloe does a fun Chalomet.

Cold Open: So good to see the Church Lady again. Dana really is an honorary castmember this season, and I am glad to see it. Squirm as Matt Gaetz really was the perfect guest. David Spade as Hunter Biden was not on the bingo card. Also, the closed captions said Marcello was "speaking a global language." I'd say that this was a little slow and flat...but it was the exact pace as the old sketches. They even did the Church Lady dance! That checked off the whole list for that sketch, didn't it?

Monologue: Paul Mescal is the Irish Pedro Pascal. Sorry, but that's how he seems to come off to me. But he was charming.

Ear Pierced: Hey, Emil got a lead role! My biggest laugh so far as when they kept tossing Sarah out the window. And "you think we're homophobic? Your dad's been gay for fifteen years!"

Gladiator Twosical: Perfectly dumb spoof. Gotta love them shoving references to Hamilton, 8 Mile and obviously Wicked in there. If that was really Paul singing, I'm impressed. He's definitely not afraid to be silly.

Capinelli's: Come on, "spaghetti or not" was real good. I laughed at "pasta la vista, baby!" too.

Please Don't Destroy: Wasn't feeling it until the Daddy daydream with the cabin. Then it was great. "Paul's back! He's back from playing another sad hot guy!"

Treasure Guyland: And here I was thinking Domingo would be showing up a THIRD time. And shout out for Ego for enjoying the historical accuracy in a strip show.

WU: Time for what we were all waiting for: their take on the CEO assassination. They were harder on Pete Hegseth. Everything else was great. And here I was thinking the punchline for the wooden satellite would involve satellites made out of straw and bricks.

Colin just lost it on the squirting cucumber joke, and the elf on a shelf.

Devo Trial: So stupidly funny. Such a great sketch from Dismukes. Shout out to the wardrobe department making twenty copies of the green Devo suit.

Satoshi Gutman: I feel like the only one who doesn't use Spotify. I knew it was gonna be a Bowen character the moment they said the name. And I know I'm an old and don't use Spotify, because I had no idea who Tricia Paytas was, and why everyone went nuts over her.

Buzzfeed Red Carpet: JAJ looked amazing as Bob Dylan. Really odd that they managed to squeeze this sketch in at the end. They had three minutes and they sprinted through it.

Paul Mescal was not afraid to be silly, and boy did that help. And I had no idea what a Shaboozey was before tonight, but color me impressed, I liked both of his songs. Next week Chris Rock is back. (The worst kept secret if you were following the NYC comedy scene)

I'm not sure what was going on, but my channel came in late on both the second song and the spotify sketch and then cut the show off before the goodbyes. Weird.

Haven't seen the new Gladiator and don't know Paul Mescal from anything, but I thought he was pretty charismatic and seemed into the show. He can definitely come back.

I thought Paul Mescal was delightful (which is good since I did manage to get tickets to see him in Streetcar Named Desire in March - yay!).  And I quite enjoyed Shaboozey.  The show on the whole didn't do much for me though.

Yay! I'm happy for you! Who's playing Blanche?

Oh yeah, I'm so happy we got one more Church Chat while Dana is still around. Maybe not the best one as I think the Church Lady has mellowed a bit with time, but it brings back good memories. Anybody else miss Pearl at the end? Just me? Ok.

I didn't know Shaboozey, but I did know The Bar Song. Heh.

I'm definitely old.  I just didn't recognize him.  Possibly because I've put him out of my mind...

They are bringing the production from London over, so I'm not familiar with either of the actresses - Patsy Ferran is Blanche and Anjana Vasan is Stella.  I love the play and this sounds like an interesting take.  I just have to get over having to go all the way to Brooklyn from the Upper West Side to see it.  😄

You're old if you saw the first Church Lady sketch, which was over 38(!) years ago.

I hadn’t particularly been looking forward to this, I thought Paul only excels in shy, quiet roles, but he pulled this out with flying colors. I loved PDD and the pirate sketch was silly and totally worked for me.

This is about how I feel. There was nothing I'd call a high point (the earring and courtroom sketches came close), but I didn't intensely dislike anything either. I had hoped Paul Mescal, in spite of never being in comedy, would not be as dour as Jacob Elordi was last season, and luckily, he had a real sense of happiness and glad-to-be-here all through the night. I wouldn't mind seeing him host again. He didn't have as many chances in the live sketches as he did in the pre-tapes, but he was enjoyable in the pirates sketch.

Many of the attempts to bring back Church Chat since Dana retired her in the early '90s haven't been the same, in part because he doesn't have the same energy and in part because the character is lost on many younger views, but I thought this was better than the last few attempts. Nothing fantastic, but much improved over the usual cold opens this season. I wasn't that interested in the Dana/David podcast mentions as I haven't ever listened, but I did like seeing them spar - a good use of David Spade's comedy chops and a good way to talk about the pardon (especially compared to the hackier Matt Gaetz material).

I thought the Please Don't Destroy sketch was really weird, and not a funny weird, but more of a "where are they going with this" weird.

I wasn't entirely sure either. They seemed to be trying to delve into the mind of people who simultaneously treat a celebrity as a boyfriend and a father figure. I don't know if that's something you can tackle in a comedy short, and it's not something I expected to see PDD tackling either. Both their shorts from this season (the two that have made the live show) suggest to me they don't want to keep doing what they were doing but also aren't sure how to go forward.

I did think Paul Mescal did a wonderful job in a difficult part. You usually don't get that much acting in pre-tapes of recent years.

I don't use Spotify either. I have no idea what a Spotify Rap is. I thought it was where regular people post their own rap. And no idea who Tricia Paytas is -- Heh, autocorrect changed her name to Tricia Pastas -- so I guess I need to do some googling.

I didn't know they had a podcast. I wondered what Dana was referring to when he mentioned podcast.

When Church Lady first appeared, I was happy. Unfortunately the sketch did not work at all for me. First off, I HATE Sarah's impression of Gaetz. When she first came out, I thought it was George Santos. I know she did Gaetz before, but I guess I tried to wipe it from my memory. David Spade did a pretty good job of looking like Hunter, but the jokes were... not there.

The monologue was ok, with a couple of bits that I LOL'd at. The first one was when after all the clips of him crying in various roles, the clip from Gladiator was him crying. The second was the mascot referencing the US: The Fightin' Fat-Asses. I thought that was hilarious, but the audience groaned. Huh?

I really like Heidi and Akim in the ear-piercing sketch.

I absolutely LOVED Gladiator II, The Musical. I will have to watch that again. It really was amazing. The songs were good, the dancing was good, the comedy was good. Did we know that Mescal had such a great voice? And he can dance, too. I cracked up when he and Andrew flossed.

The Italian restaurant sketch was ok. Paul and Ashley were really good.

I thought the please don't destroy video was good. Yes, it was weird but in a good way.

In the Bachelorette Party sketch, I liked that Ego was into the whole thing. I thought this was a decent sketch. The guy with two peg legs cracked me up.

Not so impressed with most of WU. I did love when the pic of Kash Patel was there, and Che said, "Seen here realizing it wasn't just a fart." I also pretty much enjoyed Heidi and Marcello. "Pizza. Comma. Pizza."

The trial was silly and funny. Andrew did good. "Gentlemen! Shuffle!"

The "A Complete Unknown" red carpet was ok. Chloe does a pretty good Timothée, but I was more impressed by JAJ's Bob Dylan.

As for the music, that was not what I was expecting from Shaboozey. Never heard of him, so I didn't know he was a country singer.

I gotta say, I laughed out loud four times during the show, which is a record for me. I think Paul is adorable! Loved the Treasure Guyland sketch: yes, I know the difference between pirates and privateers! Loved the historical accuracy, glad we didn't see most of their scurvy- wracked chests, but sad not to see Paul's 😉.

Was impressed with Shaboozey, have heard of but never listened to the Tipsy song so I was glad he did it for us. Usually the musical guest has moved beyond whatever song I might have heard of!

Have zero idea of who Trish Whatshername is. Am uninterested in finding out.

Did not recognize David Spade; I don't think he looks like Hunter Biden at all, but I did like his dialogue with the CL. Spent a few minutes wondering who it was and arrived at Jason Sudeikas, which is wrong.

Altogether a good show, I thought

Same here.

Even though I'd heard "Bar Song", I'm not at all familiar with Shaboozey; I didn't realize he was a full-on Country artist. He sounds good! Might have to put him on my very short list of Country music exceptions.

I just looked up Tricia Paytas. She's a media personality with a huge following. OK. She's also 36 -- surprised me -- and a trans man.

She apparently no longer identifies as a trans man.  Maybe NB.  Not clear.  Uses she/or they.

I liked Paul Mescal and the Gladiator musical.

I love Shaboozey's songs and I've seen him perform on tv with backup dancers, but this was the first time seeing him with backup singers, which was a nice addition.  I thought I heard Peanut the squirrel tell a joke about Shaboozey?

I think Dana Carvey has outstayed his welcome.  The only funny thing in the open was the joke about the Mets.

Paul Mescal is willing to be the butt of the jokes, which always helps.

Having a host who's willing to do anything and seems to be enjoying themselves can really elevate an otherwise mediocre show. I dozed off right after update started but I liked what i did see.

The premise of the original sketches were an actual Church Lady taking to task all the religious and high & mighty figures of the 80s, like Jimmy Swaggert, Jim & Tammy Faye Bakker, the Trumps, etc. Nowadays I'm not sure SNL's current demo even knows what a Church Lady IS, just a character Dana Carvey played in the 90s.

Spotify Wrapped is a graph your Spotify account shows you what artists and songs you listened to the most during the past year. Lots of other sites do a similar thing, like Youtube and Reddit. Most of the time it's pretty embarassing.

I don't understand how this is the Boyhood method.  They will film for 10 years?

I think it's approximately 20 years.  The show starts in the mid-70s and ends in 1957.  So it's being filmed "backwards."   I love the show and hope I'm still alive when this is released.

ETA:  I mean being filmed backwards as in the movie is filming the end of the show first since I guess he wants to show the actors actually aging.  I'm guessing (hoping) that when it's released it will start with the last-filmed scenes first and the first-filmed scenes last.  Like the show.  Which I really only love for the music and the ending (beginning of the friendship).

Okay, thanks!  That makes sense.  I knew that Boyhood did not have the backwards element, but this explains how they'd still have to film for a long time to get the aging.  I never managed to see the show on Broadway, but I did watch the documentary about the original production.

Ditto. I don't know what SNL writers do with their copious downtime between new episodes, but they seem to have lost their sense of humor. It's all so broad and obvious.

Devo skit was the only one that made me smile, because it was so silly. And is it just me, or did those suits looks more yellow than green?

Fast forwarded through the musical Gladiator, good grief, a supremely overrated movie franchise plus singing, one of my nightmares. The ear piercing skit was a test in patience, watching the one-note overreactions. So was the pirate dancers. Eh, why go on. It was all meh.

And then a country musical artist. Skip.

Cold Open:
Wow, that was not the Hunter Biden portrayal I expected. David Spade had the vibe down pat.
Juan Soto. A muscular man with a festive accent.
Church Lady overstayed her welcome. Again I wonder whether Lorne owes Dana money or something.

Opening Monologue:
I knew who Paul Mescal is but in my mind I keep mixing him up with Pedro Pescal.
Liked his shirt. How you doin', Paul?
The Fighting Fat-Asses. U.S.A.!

Paul does a decent generic American accent. Did the mom pierce her ear with a spatula? Michael looked good in that edge lord outfit.

A singing gladiator with a dad bod. Flossing. Okay. The fake Lin-Manuel Miranda song kinda rocked actually.

Capanelli's. Imagine the pastabilities! Spaghetti or not, they're gonna kill you!

Treasure Guyland. Ew, scurvy. Not what you want to see at a strip club.

Meh, Shaboozey. I am beyond tired of hearing him non-stop on the radio. He can actually sing though.

Weekend Update:
Girl, that shooter hot. Lucky S. Bechalive. Sorry, SNL, you weren't going to top reddit for jokes about the CEO killer.
Heard the squirting cucumber joke earlier last week.
Laboot-ins. Wonder if those were real Louboutins or SNL just painted the soles red? (Which might be copyright infringement?)

Courtoom sketch. I didn't get the Devo hats reference but otherwise it was an interesting reach back to a Better Call Saul episode.

Ehh, Shaboozey wasn't doing so great singing his one hit song. A few missed notes in there.

All the Spotify Wrapped lists I was seeing last week mostly went right by me because I don't use Spotify. It's a great advertising concept though.

Closing
Is Shaboozey that tall or was he wearing heels? He towered over most of the people on the stage.

Paul did a great job. He was enthusiastic and game, and didn't stumble over the cue cards. AFAIC he can host again.

Same thing happened here. Actually they were late coming back for 2 sketches, and totally skipped the good-byes. The entire world is fubar at this point, I'm thinking SNL is just part of the whole trend.

--

I thought the Gladiators musical was hilarious. I have no interest in the movie and am not planning to see it, but the sketch was gold.

I also enjoyed the pasta jokes, even the ones the sketch was pretending were duds.

Dana Carvey has nice legs.

I think Chloe's Chalomet is hilarious.

"Your dad's been gay for 15 years" cracked me up. But it also made me sad. I actually know people who stayed in that kind of marriage and it's not funny IRL.

I liked the time travel joke and the pre-amble to it. I also liked the joke about telling the shooter to get out of town. So many unclothed emperors these days.

I recognized David Spade, but not from SNL. I don't even know where I first saw him. Never been a fan, but his particular brand of schtick is instantly recognizable to me. On the other hand, I had no idea who Mescal was-- I looked it up and realized I ought to have known, since I watched Normal People... but I hadn't seen anything else he's been in, so whether I'm old or just scattershot informed, I don't know. [I'm 59]

Not sure if I'll watch Chris Rock next week. I sometimes think he's funny, and other times I thinkhe's garbage. I almost didn't watch the show THIS week, because "sometimes funny and sometimes garbage" is kind of how I feel about the world in general these days, so....

Was that Sarah? I thought the grandmother must be the new girl who isn't Jane whose name I don't remember.

When Heidi suggested that maybe the son's earring was equivalent to her having a neck tattoo, I did think that her collar must be covering something up for a later reveal. Also what was with all that jiggling?

I've been watching since the beginning also.  I wouldn't go far as to say it sucked, but it wasn't one of the stronger episodes IMO.  Nothing to do with the host, I just thought the writing was weak.  I did enjoy seeing the Church Lady.  I'm surprised so many posters here didn't recognize David Spade, but I guess he was before a lot of people's time.

I actually was a little concerned for Sarah when they kept tossing her through the window, but I'm sure they rehearsed it well.  I was worried she hit her body on the bottom of the window sill.

I went back and checked and it definitely was not Sarah as the grandmother. It was Ashley.

But this is what we have been saying for 50 years!  The show has always been a mixed bag, with some great segments and some crap.  So I always record and fast forward through the worst parts.  I liked this episode better than some other recent ones.

To be fair, David Spade was well disguised with dark hair and beard.  He was always a companion player to some much more recognizable and goofy-acting colleagues, namely Adam Sandler and Chris Farley.
