S18.E05: A Beach Of A Honeymoon

Juan and Karla capsize, literally. David and Michelle capsize figuratively. Alan and Madison are sort of staying afloat. Tom and Camille are sailing on pretty smooth waters. Ikechi and Emem ... are casualties of me losing this metaphor.

Michelle is queen of the mixed messages. She wants deep conversations but when David asks if she is close to her family, she responds "why do you want to know that?" When David tries to talk with her on the boat she says "hey, I'm just trying to keep the day light" then she has a tearful heart to heart with a producer. I wish she would just say it - she doesn't like David and she isn't attracted to him and doesn't care to be open to the possibility of any future developments. Just call it a day already, you two.

Popping in because I can't believe the After Party show is on for a freakin' hour. Why am I still half-watching? Making out my Thanksgiving shopping list has been more entertaining.

As for this episode...sheesh. Are we going to have an another 0 for 5 season? Maybe Tom and Camille will say yes? Perhaps Emem & Ikechi will pretend they're a yes for the "fame", such as it is.

All the other couples are dead in the water (to continue E's theme). Drama galore, yay!

Maybe Tom and Camille will say yes?

I can see that. They are kind of quiet and boring thus far, which for this show is a good sign. I think that Camille's curls are beautiful, as is her smile. Though his adoption story.... YIKES! No one tells him for 30+ years and then he finds out on social media? By the time Tom was adopted, it was pretty common to tell children when they were young that they were adopted, so that's a pretty big miss somewhere along the line. It definitely was NOT what the adoption field was recommending back then.

I’m not a David fan but Michelle is disgusting.

By comparison to Michelle, I am a David fan. I think it's interesting. Michelle doesn't like him so she is pissed off. And she is further pissed off that he isn't pissed off. Physically she is exactly what she asked for and he is a nice enough guy. She can't even pull it together enough to be basically polite to him and to try to just have a nice trip. With all her need for alone time, when does she think he is going to ask her the deep questions she says she wants to hear (even though her responses to them are "well why do you want to know?" It sounds like they are spending really no time together at all, which doesn't help.

I also wondered about the weird camera angles on the boat trip. There were several shots of Madison's hand on her thigh while she was talking to David - not her wedding ring hand - and a couple shots of his hand holding a drink (and showing his ring). It was enough to make me think it was intentional and trying to tell us something but I can't for the life of me figure out what. Maybe whoever was holding the camera was seasick?

What time should I arrive and what can I bring?

Did they book this entire resort?  The resorts on the honeymoon usually do seem oddly empty but there are usually some people around.  And the weather has sucked, much like these honeymoons.

Michelle has spent an entire free vacation in her room.  Why not just go do some activities with your husband?  You don’t even have to be close to him but just be in the same vicinity.

Usually the individual’s “adventurousness” or lack there of is a big theme of the honeymoon.  Someone wants to do something adventurous and the other one doesn’t and it causes a big conflict.  None of these couples seem to be at all adventurous. Juan mentioned how much fun he is but that canoe ride didn’t even look like a real thing, it almost looked like they were just decorations since the canal seemed to go nowhere. Where’s the zip lining or the ATV’ing?

David had a better conversation with Madison than he’s had with his own wife.  Michelle just dislikes everything about him.  I think she is physically repulsed by him. His outfits don’t help.  I can totally see this being a possibility on this show, there are certain people you meet that are  your “type” but  you just don’t like them at all. But she is still a bitch for not even trying.

That birthmark or whatever on Alan’s arm needs to be covered up.  It’s really unappealing looking.  His fashion choices are also not helping him at all. His wife liked him in a tux but not since then.  I thought he worked out a lot as well but he didn’t look that fit in the boat.  He could also use a little sun.  I do think he’s a really nice guy, I think Madison is just used to assholes and prefers that type.

Camille just wants Tom to take charge.  She just needs a little more manliness from him, he’s too timid.

Agree on the weird camera angles of Madison on the boat.  Not sure if these cast members are bonding like some of the former groups although the previews show David and Juan apparently spend a great day together.

Michelle is really most upset that her negativity and attitude don't seem to affect David that much (that she can see at least).  She stated that she likes to be in control and she is totally trying to control David and his reactions.  Her total mixed messages are also a form of control-do this, say that-why are you doing this or saying that?  I have grown to like David and wish he had gotten a better match.  I wonder what the producers said to her to get her to stay.

Madison bases her relationships on appearances it would seem.  She likes the superficiality better than the substance IMO.  Work with Alan and his clothes-yes, on kareoke nights you can wear whatever you want but when we go out to dinner on Friday nights I would appreciate it if you wear... Compromise.

Although Camille and Tom seem to have a chance to work out, she said one of my pet peeves "I hope he picks up on this..."  No, tell him-don't make him guess.  I really dislike it when people want me to guess what they want-no, just tell me.

Karla continues to really like to dominate the conversation and hear herself talk.  She also sends mixed messages.  She has stated that she wants to stay home and be taken care of, yet tells people publicly that she would never want to not work as she has such a strong work ethic.

Ikechi continues to bother me.  Like Emem, I wouldn't want to be presented as bonding as 'homies' with my romantic partner.  Yes, I want to be friends, but he made it sound as if that's the only way they're bonding.  He still seems disingenuous to me.

I fully agree about Michelle. I was getting major, "I'm a good f'ing person and I deserve to get what I want," vibes (a la Alyssa). She can't even act like she wants to try. She hated him the minute she saw him. Even KNP on the Afterparty was appalled and said that she felt so sorry that Michelle was so mean to him. David said that he continued to sleep on the couch and when the cameras weren't there, there was NO conversation.

Madison is not interested or attracted to Allen, either, but she isn't as cruel, although she did say that she would not be comfortable walking down the street with him, the way he is dressed. It is looking pretty evident that she and David may hook up. It's nice that he is comfortable with himself and his sense of style, but he doesn't have the looks to pull that off, sorry. And I agree that his birthmark is distracting. He is probably a nice guy, but they sure picked a weird group this time.

Karla is ridiculous. She and Juan are ridiculous. They match in looks, but nothing else. I think it's interesting that they are both 'entrepreneurs.' That word must sound sexier than 'self-employed.'  When they replayed her van speech about the power of the magic dick on Afterparty, I don't remember if it was Tom or Allen, but he was so embarrassed all over again. And Karla said that she stands by her advice and would say it again.

I can't read Camille. She seems not to like some of Tom's comments, but she says she is still happy with the pairing.

Emem and Ikechi seem like they are spouting all the words they read about feelings and thoughts, but I don't buy it. He is way too intense and is playing some role. He would be exhausting to be around, if that's how he is when the cameras aren't there.

I hope the show gets more interesting, but as it is, I don't think I like any of these couples. Plus, I know it is my generation, but seeing all those tattoos on most of the men is a real turn-off for me. Which is sad, because David, despite his hair and body and tattoos, seems like a genuine nice guy. And HE is the one who works out? Or, was that a convenient set up to talk with Madison? They would never do something like that, would they?

I agree! I'm 36 and tattoos are a turn off for me. So many guys on the dating apps have tattoos and I just don't like the look of them.  I don't have any tattoos, and I want a man who doesn't have any tattoos.

Elizzikra .. thanks so much for taking over.  I like David, but he’s not for Michele. She is a beautiful girl, but he is very different in looks.  I myself don’t like the hair and beard, and I think she feels the same.  The show screwed up.  Just my opinion.  It doesn’t look like she wants to try.

I would agree with that except that David is exactly what MIchelle described as “her type.” I would be curious to see photos of people she has dated in the past to see what she meant by her description, if not David. I really think she can’t get past him living in the basement apartment and she’s just gathering additional fuel for the fire.

I was wondering about that. I think Karla is self-employed. She books her own gigs as a hairstylist and Pilates instructor and “sound bath healer.” I think that is different from being an entrepreneur, which to me involves gathering investors, identifying a product or service to bring to market and hopefully successfully bringing it to market. That sounds more like what Juan is doing. Not to mince words…

That magic dick conversation was ridiculous. I just tuned it out.

I haven’t seen the whole episode yet but based on what I did see, Michelle is out. She’s not interested in David at all. Not attracted to him, doesn’t like him as a person. Their interactions are like watching a bad first date between people who met on the apps.

Juan said he has investors he’s accountable to. He also has a full-time job that supports him while he’s getting his tech start-up going. Karla sounds more like a freelancer, and also like she probably doesn't make much unless she's consistently doing hair. She is a personality that I don’t vibe with at all - the hippie, crystal, woo-woo energy is just really not my thing. Juan seems very down to earth, but he also made it clear that he’s not going to be taking care of her financially, which I think she’s looking for. They look great together but they’re not a match.

They talk AT each other. Emem was nodding along with Ikechi’s monologue about how rewarding his work is, but I don’t get the vibe that she wants to be the breadwinner. I don’t even think she responded to him - she was like “uh huh.”

Camille and Tom seemed okay. I didn’t think we were still keeping adoption a secret - Tom’s story was insane.

We aren’t and we weren’t even when Tom was a child. I really didn’t get that at all, even when Keisha asked how that happened on AfterParty. It sounded like no one every got around to telling him, which is insane.

I said this earlier, but now I really think this is true - they overall have an older group this time. I think that those people, especially the women, aren't really ready or maybe even able, to be in a normal relationship that includes compromising and being aware of another person's needs. I notice this especially with Michelle and Madison. It seems clear why these women have yet to find a significant other for any long period of time. They seem to want to continue their existing lives without consideration of what is required to share that life with another person.

We have that type every season, it seems, but this season it seems to be more apparent.

If Michelle was repulsed by David's looks, why did she marry him?  Now she'll be divorced.  It's better to make a clean break then torture yourself and your match.  I think it's more than the "basement".  He's heavy and hairy and not won't age well.  She should level with him instead of being mean.  That said, she will remain single for the rest of her life because she's too pickey.

I think Madison is the only one under 30, funnily enough.

If you are single for a while, all your needs are met, and you either enjoy your own company, have friends and family you see often, or both, you tend to fall into a place of “a person has to be really great for me to give up my peace. I’m not putting up with bullshit just to be in a relationship if my life was better WITHOUT that relationship.” And that is a valid position … but it means you’re not a good candidate for this show. You have to come at being on the show from a place of STARTING OUT making space for another person. Then if it doesn’t work out, you can act single again (because you will be, ha).

I don’t like Karla and I understood what Juan was trying to say (he’s frugal, which I get) but when Karla was like “I want to … do stuff with my husband,” I was thinking “I mean, right?” I think spending a bunch of money on juice is dumb, but the idea that I’d have to do all my chosen activities alone would bug me - I could stay single if I wanted to do that.

When we were first introduced to Alan, he appeared to be a quietly confident man.

But by day 3 of the honeymoon, I felt he was too much in his head, especially regarding physical attractiveness. It's as if he considers her so healthy and fit, how could she possibly see him in the same way?

I also sense she's feeling the shift in power dynamic, and isn't as comfortable with the present direction.

As for Michelle, she's already got the "Ick" factor, and that's a hard view to get rid of. Once you've seen your mate in an unattractive position, it's hard to "unsee" that.

I feel the exact same way.  Michele got what she wanted?  I don’t see that.  She asked for a guy with longhair and beard?  When he got out of the shower, and came in the room, he looked scary.  What exactly did she ask for?  The basement isn’t an issue.  It’s like a two family home.  That’s an excuse.  I’d like to know exactly what kind of guy she wanted.

Some women like that. David’s side ponytail wasn’t working for me, but as a curly girl, I can tell David uses product and styles his hair, which I appreciate. But whether it’s his living situation or his appearance or both, she has clearly decided he’s not it for her.

David and Michelle,

She should feel like the bad guy because she is (mostly) the bad guy. She is a constant downer not making the slightest attempt to be friendly. She harps on sore spots. She seems like a Karen at times. That they will end up divorcing is a foregone conclusion. Neither are thinking about sex. So why not have fun? If she lightened up he's probably a fun guy to hang out with. Wear did she find a funeral bathing suit?

Emem and Ikechi

are so far gelling well. I hope she doesn't take being called homey too badly. Male and females who become good deep friends often get love struck also. Don't they say friends first?

Madison and Allen

Allen is driving me nuts with his hyper self-consciousnesses. When I was a teenage and early 20's I was paralyzed (around women) with lack of confidence. Its starts with liking yourself and at 27 I became comfortable in my own skin. I immediately discovered women are attracted to such men. Same thing holds for woman with a big personality and self confidence they go from a 6 to an 8. She's tipping 8 to 9 and that can be hard for a guy who thinks himself lower. I admit if I was in this situation I'd rather be with a woman who on the imaginary scale is about the same or a bit below. The trajectory for this couple looks bad. He might need to use his magic wand.

Camille and Thomas

I have a lot of hope for this couple. He has a strong vision and they could be what the pastor calls a power couple. They seem to be hitting on all cylinders. I think they may have already made love...not sure.

Juan and Karla

Superficially they seem like a great couple but not sure if any depth of communication is happening. They both seem exceptionally nice. They might agree to hang in there.

I don't like Madison at all. She thinks way too highly of herself and her "great beauty." She's ragging on Allen's fashion sense, but she's no fashion plate, imo.

Karla is definitely looking for a man to support her, and Juan's not having that .

Michelle is a flat out bitch. KKP couldn't hide her contempt on After-party. As far as David being her physical type, all I remember her saying is she likes light-skinned black men.  David seems like a nice person, but his tats would turn me off immediately. He apparently used to compete as a body builder, and his body type is a turn off to me. Maybe Michelle prefers a more slender physique and more put together partner. It still doesn't excuse the mean way she's treating him, but I can understand her lack of attraction.

If I met someone and became lovers and discovered a tattoo I could not otherwise see it wouldn't be a deal breaker. Otherwise I don't like tatts especially on woman. I can't stand nose piercings either those would be drop dead issues if I filled out a form.

That's a big demand to make right up front. She is 33 and probably thinking of children to so not sure that's on his agenda either. Why did these two need someone to find them a partner? I'm sure Michelle has had many suitors so why have someone pick out a partner. They asked her to remember why she wanted to be married and we didn't get an answer. All that went out the window.

I'm just watching it now, but on the catamaran I suddenly figured out that Emem has to lean her head back to see out from under her artificial lashes.  It's driving me nuts!  She tilts her face and peers up at Ikechi like she's peeking out from under a canopy, even when they're situated on the same level.

Ohhhhhh. Thank you! That makes so much sense! I couldn't figure out what it was about her posture that was bugging me because in the pre-wedding episodes, I thought she was so attractive! That's totally it!

Quote

I’d like to know exactly what kind of guy she wanted.

She was pretty specific and David is it, believe it or not. She said bi-racial, light skinned, long hair and I believe she said she likes tattoos. She probably didn't mean that she wanted a tattoo of the ex-girlfriend's name on her husband's chest. I can't remember her exact words but I think she said she liked some a little "edgy" maybe? I remember thinking that her type was sort of the exact opposite of her in terms of physical appearance.

Quote

So where are the 'experts' with the deteriorating relationship between Michelle and David?  After all, Michelle spent most of the day talking to her girlfriends, she could have made time for Dr. Pepper.  Oh, that's right, they really don't care...

Remember that these two have only known each other four days at this point. I don't think the "experts" usually turn up on the honeymoon. Did they for Queen Bitch Alyssa? I'm getting the feeling the producers are the ones who really spend time with the couples, get to know them and talk through things with them.

David never should have led with "I live in my parents' basement." I don't think that needed to be the first thing that he told his new wife and when he did tell her, I think that "I rent an apartment from my parents" or something to make clearer that he lives in an apartment they would otherwise rent and he lives completely independently (if, indeed, he does) would have been better. The way he first presented it left her with the impression of a guy living in the rec room with mom cooking his meals and doing his laundry while he plays video games all day. I know he has since given her a fuller picture but I think he started off wrong. Michelle does need to let it go though and she just can't.

For some reason, this was driving me nuts. So much so that I went back to the matchmaking episode and watched the scenes where Michelle described what she wanted. During her home visit with Dr. Pia, she said

Quote

So I like guys with a little bit of edge to them. Like I don’t want anyone too vanilla. Like maybe he has a couple tattoos. I like confidence. I want someone whose presence is like, known when they walk in a room. They have to be kind but I feel like there’s a fine line between confident and cocky. I think a confident personality makes someone a lot more attractive. They would have to be successful.

When the experts were convened and pairing people off, they showed a clip from what I think was her initial interviews (or at least, one of them). She said

Quote

Ok, so I like, like light-skinned black guys, like tall and like built. Someone who is creative and like edgy. Maybe has a beard and like a sleeve (tattoo sleeve); like also very well-dressed.

Honestly - I think physically they gave her exactly what she wanted with the exception being that I don't think that she considers David "built." He works out and he used to do fitness competitions of some ilk, but he has kind of a tummy and I don't think she likes that.

Oh - unrelated. As I was fast forwarding I noticed that Michelle did not have the super long extensions in the matchmaking episode and the color of her hair was a bit warmer. She looked so much better that way!

If its a completely separate unit from his parents why say anything? They usually put them up in an apartment for a few weeks so what was the point? But it sounds a bit more closer than that. People always say just be honest but they don't always mean it.

Its good that he didn't say all and that's not what he meant. He has her pegged as the type to want to go here and there and money isn't a thing. Right now, he can't do that. So, sometimes she may have to go out on her own.

Its not completely ideal but I think couples should have their own individual activities as well. We don't have to share every experience together.

Most people in gyms look like him in reality. Not overly buff or fit.

Also, he USED to be heavy into fitness. I'm sure he still works out but eats more of what he likes.

He's tall with a moderate dad bod and I feel like some are viewing and this largely obese dude.

As I go on, I know for sure I would never go on this show. Being obese and going on this show seems to be a set up for a lot of judgment or rejection from the spouse and ridicule on social media.

I know he has since given her a fuller picture but I think he started off wrong. Michelle does need to let it go though and she just can't.

What does it matter if he lead with it? A lot of people will overlook anything if they are attracted to someone. The attraction just isn't there. If he waited it to say it, it would just be something else she didn't like. Better to address a possible issue right away and try to ease concern.

Michelle is awful but I can see how David would be annoying too.  They're in a vicious circle.  He took Madison's sage advice (not) and started asking her "hard questions."  Maybe he should have given her a little space and tried something less heavy.  Plus, he is seething with rage, and I don't blame him.  If he says "THIS MARRIAGE" one more time, I will scream.  I imagine she feels the same way, hence she becomes more awful.

Madison has her eye on him--mark my words.

Also, he USED to be heavy into fitness. I'm sure he still works out but eats more of what he likes.

Yeah, I think I saw that he used to be a bodybuilder or do fitness competitions and those require eating in a really restrictive, specific way, so if he’s eating more normally now, he looks … normal. I remember reading what Rob McIlnenney did to get in his famously best shape on It’s Always Sunny, and it was miserable (and he framed it as such).

Allen is thinner than David but David looks to be in better shape - more muscle definition and I would guess he’s stronger. Like putting them next to each other, I would assume David works out and Allen doesn’t.

Of all the men, I like David the most. He seems like a truly good guy. I would not be attracted to him - too many tats and he is too big for me (I am under 5' tall and very tall/large men make me nervous). But, he seems decent and like he is seriously trying to take this seriously and is getting no help from his "wife" or the producers, from what we have seen. They seem to spend most of their time with Michelle.

Since we are all anticipating that Madison and David will hook up, does that mean that Michelle and Allen will? That, I don't see - especially looking at what Michelle asked for. She got what she asked for. She just doesn't like him. When I was working, I had a cartoon posted in my office - a customer was saying, "That's exactly what I wanted and I don't like it."

This show is too long- I made pizza dough from scratch yesterday and it rose and doubled in size before the episode even ended 😏. I don't give a shit about seeing their rides in the van to and from locations, watching them eat, or seeing lukewarm forced PDA for the cameras.  I want fights, infidelity, smeared mascara and slammed doors! Do I have to wait 10 or more episodes to see Allen angrily drop kick a kitchen cabinet?! I was promised that in the previews- when will it happen?! 😩😤😅

Allen should cover that birthmark on his shoulder. It’s unsightly. He isn’t a bad looking goose but he needs to put some spunk in his attitude.

Michelle is awful. Did they choose her for drama? They had to know that pairing her with David was going to bring out the uppity bitch in her. She is a complete asshole.

Camille and the twin seem decent. They both seem to be trying.

I agree about Emens fake lashes. They are too much and look like spiders. She is pretty and should just wear some mascara instead of the fake ones.

Karla is fake woke and Juan is on the show to promote his tech startup and maybe, his horrible singing.

He does not want her and her free spirit bullshit. I think they will be cordial with each other but this marriage is dead before it even started.

I don’t see David living with his parents as that bad. At first I did think it was a red flag but I’ve since decided otherwise. Why not save some money instead of paying high rent? Then as a newlywed, had he been paired with a good match, they could find a place together.

The tattoo of the ex is another matter. Nobody is going to get a kick out of that or want to go to the tattoo parlor with him. He should have had it covered or removed before his wedding.

Overall though he seems like a nice guy and fun. He invited Michelle to lunch and to go for a walk yet she would rather wallow in self pity that she didn’t get what she wanted.

I dislike ridiculously long eyelashes.

Agree Michelle has been acting horrible to David, the guy can’t do or say anything right.  She cracked me up when she went on and on at him then exclaimed that he doesn’t shut up and she can barely get a word in. I think that was a lightbulb moment for him.  She’s almost 40 and very immature, or has little self awareness, not sure she could  be happy in any relationship.  It always amazes me the people who think they could go into this kind of relationship when they are not open to the possibility right from the start.

And it still amazes me that this is the type that is selected every season. I should know by now that it is only this type that applies for this mess. Especially now that the show has been on for so long, people know the odds of finding a real relationship are virtually zero, so they must be applying now only for social media likes, etc. Even so, the show always has to cast people as villains, even if they aren't as horrible as we see. But, in Michelle's case, I believe we see the real Michelle. David even mentioned on Afterparty that when the cameras aren't there, there is no conversation and he sleeps on the couch.
