Between Pope Leo hopefully stealing his thunder and the war zone he’s creating in Los Angeles playing on TV screens I hope his parade is a monumental disaster

According to the British media, Meghan Sussex going for a hike stole Charles's thunder on the day of his coronation.  Maybe Meghan can go outside on the 14th and do the same thing to Trump.

The parade doesn't start till 630 pm.  I'm sure there will be newsworthy events happening that night.    I'm sure some paint will be drying somewhere.  I would rather watch that.

Don't get me wrong. I've been highly critical of Newsom's reign in California but this is going to be a huge PR boost for him in 2028 and I have no notes for how he's handled this. That said, I still think he's the wrong choice, too center, pro business and he definitely won't win any far left voters that refused to go for Harris. I don't see him winning over any center rights because of him being perceived as a Californian Coastal Elite. I know, I hate those buzzwords too but that is how he is seen.

I would not count out JB Pritzker as a potential frontrunner in 2028. I do think he's progressive enough to appeal to the left while also somehow being a billionaire who one could have a beer with.

JB Pritzker was my Governor during the beginning of pandemic. His communication style is right up there with Obama's, and his bank account is nothing to sneeze at either. He was very comforting in a crisis.

Yes despite being a billionaire he doesn't come across as an elite.  And people in his  home state like him.  I don't think Newsom can say the same.

I think most of us know the 2028 Democratic nominee is going to be a white man but who wins the VP stakes?  Will it be a woman?  A man of color?

Does the GOP no longer believe that "States' rights!" is the answer to everything?

They only care about "states' rights" when the state in question is pushing to uphold one of their concepts like more guns, or keeping a brain-dead woman alive because she's pregnant, or prosecuting a woman for a miscarriage, or homeschooling, or opting out of vaccines, etc. When a state wants to enshrine abortion as a right or passing a law that confiscates the guns from men convicted of domestic violence, then federal law always supersedes the will of the people.

Fucking Mike Johnson is such a weirdo.

I remember when he replaced Kevin McCarthey I thought this guy is going to be even worse.  Isn't he the guy who made some anti porn vow with his son and they make sure they don't watch it?

I want these guys to go down and go down hard.  They make Bush and his compassionate conservatism seem rational.

no worries: June 14 is also the Trooping of the Colour; Meghan is certain to release some nonsense to try to distract from/compete with Charles' celebration. It's almost guaranteed

I'm starting to feel vindicated because a lot of us several pages back thought the election was tampered with.

Even though there is zero chance things will be remedied which would be Trump taken out of the WH in handcuffs it would be nice to have it on the record things were not above board.

I'm a moderate Democrat and if we still have a true democracy in 2028 (& an election!), I'll vote for *any* Democrat. We no longer have the luxury of being dissatisfied with the candidate because of his/her being in a particular wing of our party. Who knows what shape we'll be in by 2028 (especially if we can't get control of the Senate next year). The USA that we grew up in and have known is on its way out, thanks to people like Vought, Miller, Theil, etc , all of whom are using their own Manchurian Candidate (or Chance, the gardener from Being There)...Donald Trump.

Governor Newsom is not letting any of this slide. It’s driving MAGA world crazy

Today he released a TikTok with the voice of Emperor Palptine reading Trump’s rants

This is what I keep saying. The people of L.A. should bring the troops (not ICE or the cops) bottled water and snacks. They're in Hollywood, man! They should put on a show, entertain the troops like the USO shows. It's harder to see people as the enemy when you're laughing and cheering.

Meghan is unlikeable as her husband is. A guy who went to a costume party as a Nazi. They are more like Edward and Wallis than they will ever admit.

I still hope they have a huge concert somewhere - free of course - that is filled with the most talented of the talented and that is Woodstock and Live Aid combined and that makes his tin pot dictator parade look pathetic.

I can see it. They can get Springsteen, Young, Swift, RATM even the newer guy Jesse Welles. But it has to be televised. All Donnie cares about is ratings.

MAAGs love to stoke violence

Asked by reporters today on Trump supporting that Governor Newsom should be arrested Speaker Johnson replied that he wouldn’t give legal advice but that the governor should be tarred and feathered

MAGAs are sociopaths

Criminal sociopaths.

What Johnson said right there is a terroristic threat!  Once again, in a functioning democracy, he should be charged with a crime, but here in Bizarro World it's become, "I was only joking. Can't you take a joke?"

Meanwhile, militia MAGA hears that as marching orders from the guy that's second in line to the Presidency.

But the thing is they don't seem to have that line in the sand.  Will there be anything that will make them wake up?

I used to wonder the same thing.  But I listened to a Fresh Air interview with a religion professor who used to be a Christian nationalist himself, and it's now very obvious.

They are awake.

The professor traces evangelical support for Ronald Reagan and then GWB, and outlines why both of them were disappointments.

He continues:

"And then all of a sudden, it was Barack Obama. And Barack Obama was, like, made in a lab to scare white Christian nationalists. So Barack Obama is president, and then we get Obergefell, and gay marriage is legalized.

"By the time Donald Trump arrives, this group of Christian nationalist voters, whether they be evangelical, whether they be conservative Catholics or Latter Day Saints, are in the mood not for somebody who simply identifies with them and their politics, someone like Ted Cruz or Mike Huckabee, they're in the mood for somebody who will act as the brutalizing barbarian needed to take the country back.  If you want to colonize the Earth for God, it's not enough to have a testimony that says, Jesus saved me from my sins or from my alcoholism. What you need is a bully, somebody who will put in line all those folks that you think are ruining your country and causing it to descend into the pits of hell.

"You don't just need somebody who's going to go to church on Sunday and talk a good talk. You need somebody who will destroy in order to rebuild. So Donald Trump, yeah, doesn't go to church a lot. Donald Trump, been married a couple times. But you know what he promises in ways that no one in our lifetimes has? He promises to punish those who have caused this country to go the wrong way. And so eight years later, we have a base that is more rabid to make him their barbarian king than ever before."

There's much more.

And there's a transcript that looks to have been touched by a human, so you can actually read it.

I’m glad Governor Newsom’s trolling Trump

Earlier today the governor tweeted out correcting Trump for slipping up and calling him Newsom saying “what no Newscum?”

I love that he has a sense of humour about this.  For me though this is one of the (admittedly many) things I dislike about Trump.  The way he has to have demeaning, mocking nicknames for people he hates.  It's childish in anyone but in the president of the United States?  Just cringe worthy and embarrassing.

This. It's all about Obama's election, and perhaps even more importantly, Obama's RE-election. White Christian nationalists could not let THAT stand and in 2013, just five months after President Obama's 2nd inauguration, the Supreme Court guts the Voting Rights Act, opening the floodgates for voter suppression in unthinkable ways.

Below is a link from 2013 as just a small refresher. I'm quoting the part of the article that names the states that were freed of the requirement of obtaining federal approval before making any changes to the way their elections were held. Look at that list and imagine the votes we could have received from those states from 2014 forward had their Election Commissions not been able to supress votes. 😡

I know we all zero in on the desperate need to reverse Citizens United and get dark money out of politics, but reinstating and reinforcing the Voting Rights Act to full strength is, to me, our #1 priority. And before anyone says, "Why didn't Biden get this done?" There's a two word answer: Joe Manchin. Here's a link from 2021 for that, too.

Manchin Says He'll Vote Against Voting Rights Bill, Dooming Dems' Election Overhaul Efforts

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/joe-manchin-vote-against-for-the-people-act_n_60bcb833e4b099fb31c8ebb7

Supreme Court halts use of key part of voting law

https://apnews.com/article/courts-voting-race-and-ethnicity-racial-injustice-laws-871be7654df041549cf74eb1a1d377ca

Split along ideological and partisan lines, the justices voted 5-4 to strip the government of its most potent tool to stop voting bias — the requirement in the Voting Rights Act that all or parts of 15 states with a history of discrimination in voting, mainly in the South, get Washington’s approval before changing the way they hold elections.

...

The prior approval requirement had applied to the states of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. It also covered certain counties in California, Florida, New York, North Carolina and South Dakota, and some local jurisdictions in Michigan. Coverage was triggered by past discrimination not only against blacks, but also against American Indians, Asian-Americans, Alaska Natives and Hispanics.

Why does everyone bow down to him?!

In ABC's case, my guess would be both, money and access. I'm assuming Disney doesn't want another confrontation like the one they had with DeSantis and ABC likely wants to keep access.

Did you see the movie The Post? I'll use spoiler tags so I won't accidentally spoil anyone but

Spoiler

there's a scene in the movie where they're meeting in Ben Bradley's office. I don't recall what had happened but it had caused the Post to fall out of favor with Nixon and their access to Nixon's daughter's wedding had been revoked. (I read Katharine Graham's biography after I watched the movie and it's true).

It looks like back in the day, they didn't care enough about it to bow to the president. Nowadays, however, we live in a world where being first seems to be so much more important than getting it right and I'm under the impression that access matters a whole lot more than preserving freedom of the press and journalistic ethics.

I have never in my life, as far as I can remember, hated anyone the way I hate Trump.  But in the last few weeks I am beginning to realize that I don't just hate Trump, I hate anyone who supports this fascist would-be dictator.  I am unapologetic about this.

Not only is the road to hell paved with good intentions, the road to a fascist dictatorship is lined with people who say "now, now there's good people on both sides".

Actually I think the road to hell is paved with hate. If we succumb to it in such a big way we become no better than Trump, one of THE most hateful people ever. If we stand against hatred aimed at people based on race, religion, beliefs, gender, etc. we have to stand against all hate, even hate based on political leanings, and yes, even if we think those leanings are wrong. Hatred only fans the flames and makes things worse for all of us. It doesn't solve anything. I don't want to make things worse. Being kind to people we disagree with at least will not make things worse and may actually help.

I may dislike and disagree strongly with Trump supporters but by far most of them are not proud boys, neo-Nazis or anything that vile. Many of them are nice and decent people, not deserving of hate. And I know several of them, including my neighbors on both sides of me. I consider them blinded and misguided, but nowhere near evil enough to hate.

And it's a false equivalency to compare what Trump said in Charlottesville with what I'm saying above. I'm not talking about hateful people here. Not all Trump supporters are anything like those people. We can scratch our heads at how nice and decent people can overlook, rationalize and explain away all the hate Trump encourages and spews and all the hate groups and hateful people that follow him, but even as they do that they are still not on the same level of evil as Trump or those other people mentioned. Not even close.
