I'm really glad that TV Emma Stone wasn't the killer. I liked her.

This was a fun case with lots of twists and turns. Kind of Elizabeth Holmes-esque.

Oh, and it sucks that there's only one more episode left in the fall run. Feels like we've barely gotten going. I want more!

Ooh, that was an interesting twist to the case. I'm glad for Sam's sake, 'cause I was feeling so bad for her when she broke down in the bathroom. I liked Morgan joking to Karadec that she'd invited her out for drinks with the team* :p. It's fun the way she messes with him. I also appreciated Karadec admiring Morgan's ability to root for the underdog, that was a nice moment.

Morgan's interaction with the janitor was good, too - and he proved helpful to the case with his own suggestion!

*Please tell me we'll get to see a team karaoke scene at some point, show? 'Cause I would be very much down for that, if only to see Karadec doing some yacht rock XD.

That's her name! I couldn't think of it.

I like the janitor. He's cute and funny. 'Nursing school's just a backup plan in case the janitor thing doesn't work out.'

I didn't think this episode was as good as last week's. It's funny,  because I wasn't sure how I felt about the family drama, but since Morgan's kids and ex were entirely absent this week I realized the show needs that balance.

Clearly they're setting up something between Morgan and the janitor. Was that her phone number she wrote on the glass door? When she was the cleaning lady she came in after hours when nobody was there, so why is Tom working during the day?

Okay, after they showed the video, which clearly showed the boss going after Sam (who was pushed onto her back upside down on a chair) with a pair of scissors, and Sam kicking her away so that she fell onto the trophy thing on her desk, which killed her, did they say "with a decent lawyer" she wouldn't go to jail? Why would she need a lawyer at all after seeing the video that made it obvious it was self defense? What would they charge her with?

Yeah, with her cheesy finger marks that he was complaining about earlier.

Involuntary manslaughter?

Because they realized that one Morgan is more than enough?

The weird thing is, before they found the video, they really didn’t have any evidence whatsoever that Sam killed her boss.  You can charge her on the basis of having the motive and the means, I suppose, but I don’t think you can bring the “if you don’t remember it, it doesn’t mean you didn’t do it” to the jury and expect them not to have reasonable doubt.  At least I hope that what they had on Sam would not be enough to convict anybody.

Another question - why did the boss have a camera behind a mirror that neither the company security nor anyone else knew about?  If someone knew about it, there would have been no need for that karaoke chronometry, or for any investigation, for that matter.  So did she install that camera for her own personal enjoyment?

It always puzzles me how all these Evil Pharma companies on TV knowingly push a harmful product onto the general public.  It’s not something you can expect to hide, really.  What’s the plan for when people start getting sick and inevitably sue the company?  Couldn’t that “tread lightly” lawyer guy explain to her that it’s not a good idea, legally speaking?

And I agree, the episode was kind of bland without the kids.

I am totally rooting for Morgan and Tom (the janitor). I also think Oz and Daphne would make a cute couple. I want Karadec drawn into the different couples' romantic nonsense that he wants absolutely no part of.

My guess is different shifts. They are people on the day shift who take care of things that cannot wait until the end of the day, and then a night shift that does deep cleaning or things that would be too difficult to do during regular work hours.

@Annber03 I would love to see a Karaoke night.

When the boss fell on the trophy, there should've been blood spatter on the desk and a trail of blood to where she eventually fell and died.  They were going under the assumption that they would find the killer's fingerprints on the trophy, but the killer never touched it.  That's an important piece of the puzzle.

I like to watch shows about detectives solving real murders and how important the blood spatter expert is!  It's fascinating.

Nothing really to add except:

- I liked the resolution of the case. It is nice that for once it wasn't some deliberate murder or fake out where the nice Sam actually turned out to be a sinister manipulator.

- I don't know who the actress who played Denise (the security person) was but she was gorgeous and her lip color was banging!

- That song that was playing at the very top of the show (when Morgan was doing her laundry in the first scene) was 'Elastic' by Joey Purp.  I love that song, it is a great work out song.

On a related note, I really loved the sweater that Nina had on when she was being interviewed about the case.

Yes. I just noticed that too.
So that sort of makes this like a pilot episode?
Maybe that's why it wasn't as cohesive as the others?
And maybe that's why there aren't any more episodes? Will they regroup and make more?

They did.  Interesting placement of the camera, too.  Imagine her sitting at her desk and watching herself watch a livestream of herself sitting at her desk and watching the livestream.  Or a livestream of herself talking to a person in front of her desk who sees in the mirror that she is watching that livestream.  Yep, she was an inventor alright.

Apparently, there is a theory that if you put a mirror behind yourself in your place of work, any angry customer or client or anyone talking to you will see himself in the mirror, will not like seeing himself looking angry and will stop being angry.  Reddit is skeptical.  Didn’t work for the people in this episode either.

The floor was carpeted and soaked with blood by the time she was found in the morning, so no trail, it appears.  And someone should probably sue the maker of that trophy, a person can kill herself with that thing.

Maybe that explains why there was little of Morgan's home life and introducing more folks to her work family.

If she's paranoid she wants to keep tabs on who goes in and out of her office when she steps out and what they're doing in there. Or to record conversations she has with employees in case she wants to use their words against them somehow. The list goes on.

I have never worked anywhere that had a day shift cleaning staff. Nothing happens on a daily basis that can't wait until after 5:00 p.m. at the earliest. I think they invented that just so this character can interact with Morgan. And I can't help but wonder if he's up to something. Just a hunch because of the way he's acting.

According to the internet there were 11 episodes filmed for season 1 so it will be back, probably in the new year. I have seen this before with other shows, except their fall season didn't end in mid-November. They usually run through at least part of December and then come back a month later in January. But because this show only has 11 episodes in its first season the holiday season hiatus is longer.

An Instagram by Kaitlin Olson (which was posted in the Media thread) indicated there were 13 episodes for the first season

I don't get this trend either. It really kills whatever momentum the show was building up. With so many options today it's really easy to forget about a show that goes away for even a little while.

With the trend reflects  all shows going to half of what was the traditional American network standard of half a year.  With reruns to hold you over if you were good and a summer series with bigger name other than TV network stars to take over if they had little hope for renewal. Even if they run 13 in a row, instead of half a year you get 3/4ths of a year until a return for the next season.

Wait, there's only 13 episodes total for the entire season? They didn't get a back half order for additional episodes? What a mess! This show is doing pretty well ratings-wise but having nothing new again for months on end could kill that.

I can't say for sure. A lot of shows began as a half season show but earlier in the calendar, not TV traditional season year.

It could have been a request by the star Kaitlin Olson and/or the producers to keep it to 13 episodes for the series or just the first season. The episode count might have even been a byproduct of the strikes

Kaitlin also stars in It's Always Sunny, so she may have a stipulation that HP films when IASIP is on hiatis, as opposed to filming from Aug-April (guessing) that normal 22 episode seasons requires.

For what it's worth, my company has janitorial services in the day and evening because we operate 24h/day. So I didn't think anything of the daytime cleaner since police stations are also 24h. If he's there for nefarious reasons instead potential love interest reasons, my guess is that he is tied to her daughter's father's disappearance.

My workplace does, but they don't empty trash (other than in the kitchen, if needed) in the office until the end of the day; they're usually making the rounds around the time I'm leaving. They'll tidy up the kitchens and restock cups and stuff in the morning and afternoon. They used to clean the bathrooms during the day, too (usually when most people are going to lunch...), but they stopped doing that. Now they just do it after most of the office staff is gone or in the morning before we get there (I just know the toilet water is blue if you're the first one in there in the morning). They also vacuum every so often but that's always after hours. Not sure what they do out in the warehouse, though. Those breakrooms and bathrooms probably need more cleaning in general.

About ten years ago my company switched the cleaning staff to the day in order to save money. They were leaving the electricity on until late at night for the cleaning crew, and wanted to stop to lower the bill. Maybe rates were cheaper for the cleaners as well. The crew did everything during the day, even come around and empty trash cans. It was how we learned they dumped both the garbage and recycling bins into the same master can.

But now most people in my company work at home, so I doubt they even have regular cleaners.

I have no idea if this is how it still works, but it used to be a show would start off with around 6 episodes, then it would get about 6 more, and then if it did well, it would get another 9 episodes (called the back 9) to make a full season. The network was divided into fall/winter and spring (a bit like school with winter break in between). A full season would include between 22-25 episodes that aired between September and May.

Has network switched to the cable model of 13 episodes? Is it now fall TV season (September through November) and spring (December through May)? Is the idea of mid season and the mid season replacement no longer a thing?

Some shows have, but then there's other network shows, like "Ghosts", that are still doing 20 plus episode seasons. I think it just depends on the show, how packed the networks' programming schedules are (some shows may have shorter seasons so they can fit them in around whatever other stuff they're airing), actor availability, stuff like that.

But yeah, I can also see networks trying to match cable/streaming in that way, too, in order to keep up.

All of the above cleaning staff situations and many more can be true if you work somewhere long enough. Been there. Seen that. Including a shift that started at 4am and emptied our office garbage in the morning before they left.

After I posted I remembered one company I worked for that used to have twice a day cleaning but they discontinued that eventually for budgetary reasons. Toward the end of my career my last company even discontinued daily cleaning in the offices! Our trash cans were emptied every other day. It was awful, especially because I made more than the average amount of garbage in my position and my trash can would fill up.

Sometimes prosecutors get overzealous. If she has a good lawyer, the whole thing can get shut down more quickly.

I thought this was a good episode.  I'm not surprised it wasn't a duplicate of the French show - I think this whole evil pharma trope is pretty much a US thing.

Did anyone else notice, and be really bothered by, Morgan's constant touching of Sam?  She was touching her shoulder, arm, stroking her hair in a few scenes.  I thought it was really weird.  I thought it would end up being explained as some magical anti-anxiety technique, but if it was, I missed it.  I know Morgan was being mom-like to Sam, but she was a stranger and that just seemed icky.
