Jeopardy! Season 41 (2024-2025)

I knew I should know FJ, but alas, I couldn't think of it.

I misunderstood and thought that the adjective would include the feeling as well as the location.

I told Keegan not to be so reckless with his DD wagers.  Then I thought he would actually be right instead of not quite close enough both times.

Sarah had some good answers but some not so good. At least she wagered sensibly in FJ.

Didn’t she have a runaway?

Yes, she had 200 more than double Ben's score.

Ben $3,600
Sarah $7,400
Keegan $2,800

I guess my point was, has anyone ever not wagered sensibly from that position (Cliff Clavin excepted)?

Keegan likely would have had the win if not for that all-in DD wager on the Pledge of Allegiance. If only it had been about the lyrics to O Canada…

Mentioning “gut” in the FJ clue somehow fixated my brain on that word. It took a lot of mental effort to clear away terms like “gut punch” and “gut instinct”, but fortunately I managed to do that and came up with viscera/ visceral in just the nick of time.

Yes, wrong question for him unfortunately.  I liked his gutsy betting style, and he seemed to be very knowledgeable about a wide variety of things.  I'm old enough to remember when those 2 words were added.

Same here, but I am glad we'll see Ben again. There's something so likeable about him.

My husband was wondering if this was a record low runaway score. Anybody know?

('cause "Anyway" isn't the same as "Anybody")

I had a fun little chat with Google AI about that.  First it gave me a completely wrong answer (the lowest score of all three players, when a different one had a runaway).  Then it said it was not possible to discover.  I suggested it go to j-archive which has that information for each game.  Nope, it didn't like that - the information was not in a format it could process.  Okay, try The Jeopardy Fan recaps.  It grudgingly said maybe it could do that, with a lot of caveats.  It said it would work on it and come back when it had the information, so I left the tab open and went and did some other stuff.

Meanwhile, I was listening to some news or podcast with yet another report of how much resources AI uses and how bad it is for the environment.  I came back to my computer after maybe 3 hours and apparently it was still thinking about it.  I told it never mind, go do something more important, and it agreed.  I hope it went and did some important cancer research or something.

Apologies if I should have put this in small talk, but I guess technically it has to do with yesterday's game.

ETA:  oh, hey. ChatGPT seems to be a little smarter. It’s not sure it’s a record, but Matt Amodio apparently had a runaway game with $6200. Disclaimer: I didn’t check it against the Archive. Also not sure why it’s getting split into two quotes.

Quote

The precise record for the lowest score a contestant had going into Final Jeopardy while still holding a runaway lead is not readily available in public Jeopardy! archives or official statistics. However, based on available data, Matt Amodio’s 11th game during his 38-game winning streak is a notable example. In that game, he entered Final Jeopardy with $6,200, which was sufficient for a runaway, as his closest competitor had less than half that amount. Despite answering Final Jeopardy incorrectly, Amodio secured the win due to his lead.

Quote

While this may not be the absolute lowest score for a runaway game, it stands as one of the lowest documented instances. Comprehensive records of all Jeopardy! games are not publicly accessible, so there may be other cases with lower scores. Nonetheless, Amodio’s game provides a concrete example of a low-scoring runaway scenario.

I looked it up and that doesn't seem to be completely accurate. Matt finished FJ with $6,200, but he had entered with $43,200 and made a large wager because his opponents  had only $600 and $400 going into FJ. It was a lock though (and would have been even if he had entered with only $6,200).

Not a great game today…In J I missed one in Instrument of My Fame and They Almost Tore It Down, two in Doctored Television and Events of 2005, three in Words that Should Rhyme, and four in IYKYK. In DJ I missed one in Science, two in Stage Names, Coup La La, 21st Century Fiction, and From L to M, and three in Cities.

Didn't get FJ. (I also guessed the Rolling Stones.)

TSes: (J had 2 + the DD (and I got all 3!), ; DJ had 6 + 1 DD) I got cello (was a little surprised no one knew Pablo Casals), Leaning Tower of Pisa (DD), Pike Place (before he got it wrong, tyvm), Donner Party, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Dan: "It's mostly nerdy trivia."
Ken: "Not the cool stuff we have on Jeopardy!"

Ken: "Logarithms are his fault, right."

My brain shut down when the category for FJ was revealed -- I don't watch the Grammys, so I didn't think I had a chance.  I have no earthly idea how many Grammys there have been, so I started thinking way earlier, but ended up randomly responding with the correct FJ.  I really thought I was so very wrong, thinking maybe the Grammys were older than that, I guess?  I don't know, I was astonishingly correct.

I also got the TS of Leaning Tower of Pisa, Ma Rainey, the Donner Party, Whoopi Goldberg, and India.

I laughed out loud at the clue with "I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer!" because that comes from one of my favorite OG Star Trek episodes.  It's one of my favorites in large part because of that line.

I had no idea when the Grammys started, so FJ was a total guess. But when I tried to think of a band that would be that mainstream-popular in decades past, the Beatles came to mind first. I figured recent wins might have to do with re-issues or collections, so I went with it.

Poor Michelle is going to be tortured by her parrot for years to come.

This👆, also, I got FJ because of my specific age and affection/nostalgia for their songs — some of which I’ve only recently realized had slightly different, somewhat offensive lyrics than what I heard/sang.

TSs were:
The Leaning Tower of Pisa and Donner Party [both frequent flyers on J!], Whoopi, and Ma Rainey.

I was right there with you knowing not a lot about the Grammy's & just said the Beatles more out of lack of knowledge than anything else.

The Beatles did not cross my mind at all, but when the correct response was revealed I recalled reading that they used [dramatic pause] AI to incorporate John's vocals into the song they released a couple of years ago.

I said Beatles first - because of the number of years (I even did math! Me, doing math- what a laugh) Then I kept trying to talk myself out of it, trying to find other bands. Fortunately I didn't come up with anything else.

That was the song I thought might be year 67.

Had a pretty good first round but went downhill from there. In J I ran Eggs and Breaking, missed one in Unofficial State Nicknames and Calendar Grooves, two in Women in the Bible, and three in 4,4. In DJ I missed one in Initialed Writers, two in Empty Words and TV Characters, three in May Days and Wind Farm, and four in Asia.

Did not get FJ.

TSes: (J had 5; DJ had 7 + both DDs) I got egg drop soup, May, Joseph, Arizona, and Israel.

Same here. I tend to think, if I know it, at least one Jeopardy contestant should know it!

As of 2025 this director has made just 4 feature films; 3 were Oscar nominated for Best Picture

Shocked myself that I knew (well, guessed correctly) this one. I was thinking it must’ve been some big time director who was was very selective about their films, but the “as of 2025” rightly or wrongly made me think it was someone who came onto the scene fairly recently.

I got Egg drop soup, May, Joseph,  Israel, and California. I didn't remember the exact lyric from the song (although "bustle in your hedgerow" bubbled up) but the May Queen is famous enough on her own that I knew what it had to be.

I wonder if that was because of the way the question was phrased. “The queen of this month”, made me think the answer would be “Queen of __”. I landed on May pretty quickly, but had to change the wording before I knew I was right. Maybe they just couldn’t get there fast enough.

Or maybe I’m just old.

Being old didn't help me at all. I had no clue.

I'm mad at myself for missing egg drop soup, which I've made before. Sigh...

I went with Justin Peele, instead of Greta Gerwig (he was nominated for four Oscars, as it turns out, but all for the same film "Get Out")

"The burden of [too much] knowledge"?
I got egg drop soup, but it was just a something I've heard of and the visual triggered the word-memory.
Plus my son-in-law's ginormous TV screen.
Maybe the TS was due to the allegedly notoriously hard-to-see clue screen on stage?

I said the Beatles but only as a wild ass guess.  And my FJ answer for last night was Terence Malick, so no joy there.

Could someone please tell us more about this? A photo of the set would be great.

Also, how/where do the contestants see the scores?

I don't remember it being particularly hard to see but they have changed it a few times since then.

The scores are on a screen just above the clue board, if I remember correctly.  The viewing audience can't see it but those in the studio can.

Back in the 50's, the Arthur Godfrey Show was sponsored in part by Lipton, makers of dehydrated chicken noodle soup. My mom would sometimes make this and add beaten eggs into it. I'm sure she got that from one of the commercials, as we weren't big on Chinese food and the fact that she always called it "Godfrey Soup." I didn't know it was called Egg Drop Soup until I was an adult.

70% / 77% / 72%

Not a bad end to the week. In J I ran Our Neanderthal Relatives (recently read a book about them called Kindred so that probably helped), missed one in Signs & Symbols, There's a Bird In Your Response, and Baskets, two in Having Fun, and four in Pick a Nick. In DJ I ran Property Watching, missed one in Words about Words, Islands, and the 1913 Armory Show, and two in Queen Story Hour and Americana. Didn't get FJ, but I did get all the DDs.

TSes: (J had 8; DJ had 8 + both DDs) I got sport fishing, gullible, scowl, caveman, speak, euphemism, expletive (DD), Patience & Fortitude, Gettysburg, Gauguin (DD), and Nude Descending a Staircase.

Dan's got a few books; I looked up his name on BN.com and that took me to his website.

I also said Inferno for FJ because the names sounded Italian, and that was all I could come up with.  Oh well.

I did get the TS of gullible, scowl, caveman, expletive, euphemism, Lafitte, Patience & Fortitude, and Gettysburg.

I said Inferno then changed it to the Divine Comedy because I wasn't sure what they meant by 'work', I was still debating that when time was up but it didn't matter, I never would've come up with the Decameron, even with the 'deca'.

I did get the TSs of caveman, Nick Adams, Gettysburg, Lafitte, hearts of his countrymen and the missed DDs of Gaugin and expletive

I  used to love Lipton's cup of soup packets - especially the chicken noodle. I got over it as I grew older...

I got expletive (I was getting into my political age when Nixon's tapes were big in the news), Lafitte (big surprise - I always mix Lafitte and Lafayette up), and caveman.

I guess I never got over it. I just pulled this box out of my pantry to take a picture. 🙂 The "Extra Noodle" variety didn't exist in the '60s, but sometimes when I can't quite put my finger on what I'm craving, but I need a touch of comfort food, I open my pantry door, see the Lipton box and think, "That'll do," and I'm a kid again slurping dehydrated soup. (Only now with extra carbs. 😄)

Edited to add: I never thought to drop an egg in to make faux egg drop soup, but that's a great idea @Prevailing Wind!
