Jeopardy! Season 41 (2024-2025)

Recommended Posts

January 31:

57% / 53% / 55%

Better than yesterday, at least. In J I ran "H.R.", missed one in Of Equal Measure, two in Sportsball, three in Lucky 13 and Theater, and four in World Facts. In DJ I missed one in Etymology, two in Movie Soundtrack, Nature, and NonSports "Ball", three in Artists and four in Way Back in the Day. Had no clue for FJ.

TSes: (J had 6; DJ had 6 + 1 DD) I got High Rollers, watts, Princess & the Frog, highball, and nepotism.

My station cut in again for a report on the latest plane crash, so I missed the interviews and I'm not sure what else.

That's twice this week.

There is too much tragedy in the world.

I have an internet-acquaintance in Philly but I wasn't sure where (she just posted a bit ago so clearly she's okay), and I started to write a comment that I was thinking about her after I saw the news last night...then I had to pause because I was thinking, "was it really just last night?" There's so much going on I feel like time has just lost all meaning...meanwhile I'm just home doing my usual Saturday morning stuff....

I watched with friends so didn't keep track, but none of us had any idea for FJ.  I twigged to something Russian, but got hung up on Novo meaning it would be New [Something Russian] and went nowhere.

We were so gobsmacked by nepotism being a TS we had to pause to grumble before continuing the game.

Boo to Allison not winning; so far, the only one of "my" contestants who's advanced is Amy (at least she's my favorite of the champs I remember, but damn, 1/4? [four rather than five as I didn't care who won the previous game]).  One friend groaned when Kevin showed up, and the other cracked us up by saying, "At least they don't call him Father Kevin".  Nobody remembered the other guy.

Meh game...In J I missed one in Voyaging Through History and two in everything else. In DJ I ran 5-Syllable Words, missed one in Brand Names, two in Subtitles of Books and Ancient Rome in the Movie, three in Anagrammed Nuclear Physics, and four in Wetlands.

But I got FJ! At least I know I won't have a complete fail week again.

TSes: (J had 4; DJ had 7) I got Dodgers, Humboldt, Aveeno, exfoliation, and Nero.

Yay, Drew! I wonder if he tied his own tie tonight. (I noticed he's the only one wearing one.)

Instaget FJ for me tonight.  I tried to second-guess myself with "tsunami," but that's not a place.  If anyone is interested, there's an excellent book by Simon Winchester on the subject.  Which, incidentally, caused a tsunami.

I also got the TS of Humboldt, Aveeno, Carter's, And The Band Played On (another excellent book), exfoliation, and Nero.  Nero was a complete guess.

Yay, Drew!

I got none of those tonight!  Can someone explain the Lisa Ann Walters thing?  The winner of Celebrity Jeopardy now gets an automatic spot in the regular TOC?  Has that been going on for a long time?

I think last season was the first time, with Ike Barinholtz (who did quite well in his TOC, thank you very much!). Then LAW had to bow out this year, due to scheduling issues with her show, and Drew learned at the last minute that he got that last TOC slot.

Season 1 Celebrity Jeopardy winner Ike Berinholtz was invited to the TOC, and made it to the semi-finals. Season 2 winner, Lisa Ann Walter, was invited, but scheduling of Abbott Elementary caused her to miss this year’s tournament.

And Drew got her spot because he came in second in the Wild Card tournament.

I'm rooting for Drew. If he wins, I wonder if Ken will mention it when Lisa Ann appears in next year's TOC.

I knew "And The Band played On"-- it was an extremely famous book in the LGBTQ community back in the day. At first I was surprised Drew didn't know it, but then I realized he's probably too young.

I shake my fist at the young whippersnappers!

I remember an interview Shilts gave (the author) knowing that treatment for AIDS was coming and also knowing he wouldn’t live to see it. They were terrible times, as a nurse holding the hands of dying young men. Night after night. Nothing prepares you for that.

When the movie Krakatoa East of Java came out in the late 60s, the ads were relentless. Even today if you say “Krakatoa….” Anyone in my age group will autopilot “East of Java!”.

Drew played a great game. I have been resisting his charms because I prefer my idols to have some kind of flaw, but I can't dislike him or begrudge him his success. I was particularly impressed with him on those anagrams.

I don't want to claim that I instantly got FJ because after the clue came up and nothing occurred to me  I hit pause in order to do something unrelated on my phone. And I guess in the background my brain knew I was searching for some kind of onomatopoeia and when I turned my attention back to Jeopardy, Krakatoa just popped into my mouth.

I remember the brouhaha about Krakatoa actually being WEST of Java and if the filmmakers got that wrong, what else was wrong with the movie?

Drew is one very lucky man.

Not to take anything away from his performance, because he’s played brilliantly and deserves every win, but to go from losing your first game to getting a second chance, then narrowly missing out on a TOC slot only to get it anyway because of a scheduling issue? The Jeopardy gods must really love him.

As do I. And because of him, I’m glad that the Second Chance Tournament is a Thing.

February 4:

In J I ran Senators, missed one in Black Mystery Month, Any Day of the Week, and Big "C"ities, and three in Hyphenated and Celebrity Podcasts.

In DJ I missed two in Condiments, Scientists, and 2 U, three in Poets & Poetry and Movie & Song Title, and four in February.

Did not get FJ.

TSes: (J had 7; DJ had ) I got Black Thursday, Dax Shepherd, Detroit Auto Show, Anaconda (DD).

Yay for Adriana! I liked everyone tonight but I had to root for the girl! Ryan reminds me of my friend's husband; similar build and the beard.

I got the missed clue of Black Thursday but I needed as many guesses as the contestants did.

Me, too, but I said it before Ken did so I'm taking it!

Last night (Tuesday) I did get North Korea for FJ and was surprised they didn't all get it.
Monday in ANCIENT ROME IN THE MOVIES for $1200, with "burned" and "this emperor" in the clue, Nero was almost an instaget for me for their TS.

Yes, Drew looks like he'll land on his feet in life.

I love Adriana Harmeyer's fashion sense, which totally went with her demonstration of her "royal" wave.
I hope she wins the whole enchilada.

ETA:
On Monday, for BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME for $400:

  • In 1955, after 5 previous losses, this NL team finally beat the hated Yankees in the World Series

— when I insta-yelled “The Brooklyn Dodgers!” for the TS,
in my mind's eye I could see Mom's beautiful smile.

Good first round, terrible second...In J I ran News and English Class, missed one in Italian Word & Phrases, and two in Elemental Names, Occupational Hazards, and TV. In DJ I missed two in Movies, Buffalo, and Qui"zz"ical, three in UN Secretaries-General and Lit-Pourri, and four in Around the World.

Didn't get FJ; I knew the scientist, but couldn't think of what animal it might be.

TSes: (J had 4 + the DD; DJ had 2) I only got copperhead (DD), .

I think the wording of the 'zz' clue  "An informal way to address a male judge or mayor" was bad. You wouldn't address him in the third person, you would say "your honour". They should have said "refer to". Obviously the clue and category forced the response to "hizzoner" but that doesn't make it right.

No idea on FJ and I felt bad for Mark who had come through so strongly. I was actually rooting for Amy in any case but Isaac played well and it was really only that second DD that put him behind.

A giant BOO to Amy not advancing (and to having to see more of Isaac's '70s porn star look), but she just never got it in gear in DJ while the others did.  Now I want Adriana to win the whole thing.

I missed two each in TV (pretty good since Ghost is the only one of those shows I watch) and Italian, but still wound up with a good first round, especially for a ToC game; I missed katana in news, but ran the rest.

DJ was a different story.  I was terrible in lit, bombing the category entirely.  I ran UN and world, but missed two each in the rest.

I had no idea for FJ.

Oof.  I spent much of the FJ think music trying to name a Dutch scientist.  When van Leeuwenhoek popped into my head, I then got distracted wondering if it was “van” or “von” and if I had the spelling correct.  I was certain my response was correct, only to discover that I totally forgot I was supposed to name an animal!  At any rate, I doubt I would have come up with the correct response in time. 😒

I had no clue, my husband thought it might be Leeuwenhoek, which I quickly recognized as right because the first part of the name means lion (not that different from German, so I was able to recognize it)

14 hours ago, shapeshifter said:

—whereas I didn't realize we needed to give the animal. Oh well, pretty amazing that I came up with Van Leeuwenhoek. But I probably couldn't have spelled it well enough to count if that was what the clue implied.

We didn't either, and I was wondering why they'd require contestants to spell such a difficult name!

I was chuckling at Isaac's shirt because a man I knew in the 70s had one a lot like it.

From Leeuwenhoek, lion was a guess but it counts.

When they announced him I said "here he is, straight out of the 70s!"

Correct guesses always count - your brain was just working in stealth mode.
