The latter; they have a very long - and very annoying, to me - history of accepting it.  Yes, yes -- given it's one of those things so many people have been saying wrong for so long it's now considered an acceptable alternative, they should indeed accept it.  I have no justification for grumbling at my TV every time.  And at least Ken gave the correct name in accepting it.  So I probably wouldn't be annoyed at all if hosts consistently and explicitly said, "It's Smokey Bear, not Smokey the Bear, but we'll accept it."  Let contestants panic for a second; I bet they'll say it right in the future.

The reason Smokey THE Bear sticks in my mind is the PSA that played incessantly on my 1950s/60s TV.  I can still sing the lyrics to "Smokey the Bear"--  "He can stop a fire before it starts to flame -- That's why they call him Smokey, that is how he got his name!"

Instaget FJ. “Catch the Fever!”

My first thought on seeing the clue was "there is no way I am ever going to come up with anything." But after some intense thinking, possibly because I had just seen Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl on TV, I decided to guess A Star is BOrn. I remembered Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson being on magazine covers and for some reason I persuaded myself that there were no other big movies with huge soundtracks in that era. Never saw the movie and although I remember the song title Evergreen do not know the music.

When they revealed the correct response I kicked myself, saying that I should have known that because I remember someone bringing a cassette to the playground so that we could listen to it while playing boxball. None of us had seen the movie because we were too young, but the songs were familiar.

When I got up this morning I wondered why my wrong guess had not been Grease, which I did see and did own the album of and spent hours listening to and singing along with.

I ordered Brad Grusnick's first in the series of gritty gross mysteries, The Last Will and Testament of Ernie Politics. I got it on Kindle for $1.99. First chapter is set in a holding cell in LA, so yeah, gross pretty much describes it. But the beginning of the story has hooked me, so I'll probably finish it.

I was thinking of checking it out. Will see if I can find an audio version.

I just ordered it - sadly, for me it's gone up a dollar, but still worth it, and I don't mind gross.

Is it just me, or is promoting the actual books of authors a new thing in Jeopardy? Seems to me, previously, they'd mention someone was an author, but nothing about their actual books. Or am I misremembering?

December 27:

67% / 59% / 63%

In J I ran Starts & Ends with O, missed one in The Last Tycoon, two in Hodgepodge, Cups & Glasses, and Parodies, and three in Fitzgerald. In DJ I missed one in Science, Minor League Baseball Team Geography, and Lesser-Known Opera (but they only got to two of those), two in Souvenirs, and three in "D.C" and Double Double Letters. I did not get FJ.

TSes: (J had 9 + the DD; DJ had 8 + both DDs + 3 leftover clues) I got outro, Washington Post, Flappers, robber baron (DD), Hot Shots, [pine] cones (DD), D'Arcy Carden, Murano, and Sadducees (not quite sure where I pulled that one from, but hey).

I said Charlie Brown.  I don't know why.

I got the missed clues of I Love Lucy (shocked that that was a TS, it was before my time, too, but it's pretty famous), diamond, flappers, robber baron, Hot Shots, tumbler, cones, Murano, mollycoddle, saduccees, and As You Like It.

I didn't run anything unless you count the fact that I got the 2 opera questions right.

I feel like they just gave up halfway through DJ.

It took me almost the entire Think music, but I got FJ -- I finished writing it just as the music ended.

I also got the TS of outro (which spellcheck does not like), Washington Post, Walk Hard, Hot Shots, cones, Don Cheadle, and Damien Chazelle.  And it's a good thing I didn't have to spell Damien Chazelle for the show.

Apparently [Covid] nausea keeps me awake and less distracted when watching Jeopardy!?
I got FJ’s Winnie the Pooh pretty quickly — flashing back to learning to read with Milne books during “nap time” at 4½.
TSs were:
the Sadducees (“they’re so sad, you see”🎶), Murano glass (still have a Murano glass pendant Mom brought back from Italy), and The Washington Post (I’ve got to cancel my subscription before the intro price goes up next week, thanks Jeopardy!, for the reminder!).

I could've sworn the promo was for two months, but I checked my account earlier today and subscription is good until Dec. 2025! I think I'll go check again...  Yup. "On December 3, 2025, your rate will change to $12 every four weeks."

I like the contestant book promos, honestly.

I do too. I was asking because I seem to remember trying to look up other contestants' books.

Now I'm picturing Charlie's big head going bump, bump, bump on the stairs. LOL.

I adopted a cat once who decided to bring her kittens to our second story apartment. She didn't quite know how to carry them, and picked them up towards their tails, and their heads went bump, bump, bump on the stairs. She was very young, I think. They were okay, though. And we were able to find a home that would take all of them. Excepting the mom, who we kept.

December 30:

I don't remember any of these people...(you'd think Will would at least ring a bell, since he's kind of distinctive, but no).

67% / 57% / 62%

In J I missed one each in Rhyme Time, Color my World, and Merman, two In Transportation and Book "Of", and three in Eurocentric. In DJ I ran Same First & Last Letter, missed two in Cetacean, Art, and Thinkers, three in Go-Go, and four in the 13th Century. FJ was an instaget.

TSes: (J had 6; DJ had 6) I got Vesuvius, hawk talk, Waymo, What doesn't kill you, and universal basic income.

I'll be watching football tonight, so just checked the archive (and clicked on the contestants' pictures -- nope, don't remember any of them, although Tekla may be vaguely familiar).

The hawk talk TS surprised me.

Since I was only seeing, not hearing, I read Merman like Ethel, not mer-man.  Once I realized it was about mermen, I expected to blow it entirely, but I did know Zoolander through cultural osmosis.  If not for that, I'd have done very well in the first round; I ran Eurocentric, rhyme time, and color, and got all but The Return of the King in books.  I missed two in transportation (well, three, but had I seen the picture of the Segway, I'd have known it, so I gave myself credit for that one).

In DJ, it was art that I dreaded, but I only missed two.  It was 13th c. that turned out to be my terrible category, as I either didn't know or couldn't get the response from my brain to my mouth -- I only managed to spit out the last crusade. I ran the rest, though (giving myself credit in cetacean for bottlenose, since I was considering that even without the picture).

FJ was an instaget.

I'll reiterate my dislike for the second chance tourney once

First of all they have enough tourneys

Second if you're going to add one i can think of several better options than this

Third not fair to the contestants that win the first time and then just miss out on qualifying for TOC to a second chance person

I could picture them doing the Saturday Night Fever dance, but having just come down with Covid (got my last vaccine at the end of September before the new ones were announced) no words appeared in my brain. Actually, I probably would have said "Grease" anyway.
I did get TSs of braved & brayed and pupils.

I knew it was Saturday night fever but was shocked it outsold grease in terms of movie soundtracks.

December 31:

I don't remember any of these people...

83% / 63% / 72%

Did pretty well in the first round! Ran Quotable Women and Animal Expressions, missed one each in Cities' Time Zone, Nonfiction, and Military Celebs, and two in Not for the Money.

Back to form in DJ…missed one in Mythology (better than I expected; I usually suck at mythology), Sink Sank Sunk, and Modern Abbreviations, two in Science and From M to Y, and four in Knotty Entertainment.

Did not come up with FJ.

TSes: (J had 1 + the DD; DJ had 5) I got Morgan Freeman, Castor & Pollux, what's good, and convict ship (I actually said prisoner but I think they'd accept that).

It's a football night, so I checked the archive.  And the pictures -- don't recognize any of these three, either.

Good lord, that docent clue reads like something from a right-wing "news" site; way to take a multi-faceted issue and glibly reduce it to whiteness.

I almost ran the entire first round, getting everything but Killers of the Flower Moon and Adam Driver.  (I was not expecting to do well in that military category, but he was the only one I didn't know [I didn't know Drew Carey without the picture, but would have got it had I seen it, so I gave myself credit].)

In DJ, I expected to blow mythology, but I only missed two.  I missed another two each in abbreviations and sink, and three in knotty.  I did not run a single category, but I came close in science and M to Y, getting all but the Oort Cloud and morphology, respectively.

FJ was an instaguess I figured had to be correct though, so at least I closed on a high note.

The picture was in B&W very unlike Drew Carey IMO -- he was in military uniform, no glasses, set expression -- we didn't come close to guessing it here and when his name was revealed the most we could agree on was we could see how it wasn't impossible it could be him.

I'm a Gemini -- any time twins are mentioned, I go with Castor & Pollux.

I was annoyed with Ken for saying "wrong set of twins" in response to Scott's half guess of Athena. Athena is not a twin -- was he thinking of Artemis and Apollo?

I was so confused by that one. I mean, I knew the correct response just from  knowing what museum volunteer educators are called, but the clue...I guess I missed that story (just googled).

I can kinda see it in the mouth that it's him (it's hard to find a more recent picture of him not smiling, though)...but I have seen this picture before, too, and knew he was a Marine. If I hadn't gotten it from that, "price" in the clue would have gotten me there (but I said it before Ken got to the last part). [Fun fact: his middle name is Allison.]

I couldn't pull the title Killers of the Flower Moon out of my brain but I knew what they were looking for.

I knew "docent" but had no idea why they added that other stuff to the comentary. Dare i ask what the story is? Will it make me even more annoyed if I find out?

https://www.fox32chicago.com/news/chicagos-art-institute-fires-all-of-its-mostly-white-female-guides-for-lack-of-diversity-report

But they got a free two-year pass to the museum for their service. (Seriously? They couldn't at least give them a lifetime pass?)

The article is from 2021. Was this national news such that the average J! viewer is likely to get the reference in the clue three years later? I know I never heard about it.

Here's something that actually delves into the issue (which is not limited to that one museum) rather than resorting to "white folks got fired!" fearmongering.

Thank you.

As an old retired white lady who volunteers at a couple of places (not as a docent), my response to that clue was "F*** OFF"

Yeah. I personally shuddered at the ageism and sexism in the clue — but maybe that was the intended response? IDK🤷🏼‍♀️. That seems out-of-character for Jeopardy! clueing. Or maybe the J! clue team have talked amongst themselves about the issue since 2021 and thought a snarky joke clue about it would land?

I’ve brought the article @Bastet found to the Small Talk thread in case anyone wants to discuss the museum docent issue more, or related issues and experiences or observations etc.: https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/2175-small-talk-ill-take-non-show-chat-for-400-alex/page/56/#findComment-8544046
I suppose discussing the clue wording fits in both threads, with more room for digressions in Small Talk.

The picture didn’t look at all familiar to me, but the clue said it was from the mid-1980s so the only person it could possible be was Drew Carey. It amused me that someone thought Bob Barker was in his 20s in the 1980s.

FJ was an instaget. Surprised none of the three got it, that seems really easy to me. Pan= all and from there the rest is obvious.

This is now the second time that Jeopardy has accepted “larnyx” as correct. Why do they keep doing that when they are normally so strict with pronunciation?

Please tell us some of the better options.

They could have a simple playoff of the next in line qualifiers who just missed the TOC

Could do a topic or theme for all the clues and rotate this each year. Like American history tourney, classic literature tourney, etc.  Crown a category champion

Id like to see instead of 3 players a head to head two player games of some of the top players.  Switch things up, one on one.

Also for all tourneys they need to up the prize to $250k.   100k isn't enough anymore for a two week tourney

No he did not

I thought for sure they'd come back and take that money away and rule him incorrect,  but no.

They've accepted this pronunciation at least four times (two of them under Alex). This happened over the summer, I think, and there was an article that mentioned previous times they've accepted it. Apparently they decided it's a common enough mispronunciation (which I've never heard anywhere else...). I don't like it, but I'm not the judge.

I don't know, I've noticed an uptick in clues about Trump and Musk, and then you add in all the Christianity clues -- I'm starting to wonder about the writers room.

Yeah I don't like it either.

Common mispronunciation or not, it's wrong.

Big difference between an accepted variant and a common mispronunciation.
