Would “What is Surf?” have been sufficient for FJ?
— especially since Jean Armour Polly‘s phrase was "surfing the Internet" not “surf the web”:

…and the clue reads:

  • In 1992 Jean Polly told new web users to do this & later explained they "need some skill... never know if there are going to be sharks"

…and isn't there some [unspoken and unwritten] Jeopardy! clue rule that the correct response will not include words from the clue?

My memory and typing were/are imprecise and incomplete: I got my MLS at San Jose State in 2000; Palo Alto was an internship for the degree.

Fellow Alumn(nus, na,)!!  Mine was a tad bit earlier, and probably different professors, as mine were fairly old. Cool that you had an internship!

I didn't notice - but Yay! The old one looked like embarrassment to me.

I should've gotten Wednesday's FJ based on my knowledge of the period but I didn't.  I blame Ewan Mitchell's penis.

I had no idea for last night's FJ.  I know the phrase but would never have gotten it from that clue.

At least you came up with a real person.  I said Daniel Webster.

I did okay on yesterday's show but I was yelling "Desolation!!!" several times.  Dylan's relevance faded a bit I guess.

That's such a shame because that is a fantastic song.  It's one of Dylan's best, imo.

If you can't be a fussbudget about Jeopardy, then what's the point of the show? Isn't it super-fusssbudgety by design?

They nitpick contestants a lot. It's only when they themselves mess up that they act like being a fussbudget is laughable.

That's something which pretty much started with the new producers.

I watched at my parents' house last night, so didn't keep track, but I know I was utterly terrible in the first round, quite possibly the worst first round I have ever had.  I blew the franchise movies category entirely, as I've never seen any of them.  In grids, the only one I got was the gridlock TS.  And I was pretty bad in games, too; checking the archive, I missed three.  But I ran the others, so I was either excellent or awful, no so-so categories.

I had a much more typical performance in DJ.  I know I ran the "never had that response" category, because it was really fun.  I had to check the archive to confirm I also ran "E", and I know I missed one or two in all the rest.

FJ was an instaguess I figured was correct.  So a very odd game in which I got better as I went along.

July 5:

77% / 57% / 67%

Tonight was the inverse of last night…good first round, bad second. In J! I ran French Slang and Cake, missed one in Pop Music, and two in Geo-Pourri, Organizations, and Layers. In DJ I ran Health & Medicine, missed one in TV "B"-Runs, two in Treaties, three in Midwesterners and Emotional Words, and four in They Wrote for Sports Illustrated.

FJ was 2/3 instaget, 1/3 semi-educated guess. I knew it had to be Dutch and English, and guessed Spanish for the third. And I was right!

TSes: (J had 5 + the DD; DJ had 7) I got Ganges (DD), fondant, cigarette, oil, and Bewitched.

I like Isaac. I hope he keeps going.

I got FJ tonight!  I was sure of English and Spanish, and figured the third was Dutch or Portuguese.  I guessed correctly because Dutch East Indies, which probably isn't related at all, but it worked for me.

I also got the TS of Ganges, fondant, Bewitched, Bonanza, and Mets.

Do you think they would have accepted buzzkill instead of killjoy?

LOL at the baguette response to the cigarette clue; next time I pick one up in the bakery department, I'm going to look like a lunatic, laughing at the image in my head of someone holding a baguette between two fingers.

I also have to laugh when Isaac doesn't know something from the '70s, when he's standing there supplementing his mustache by dressing like he raided the wardrobe of a porn flick from that era.

I only ran cake in the first round, but after last night's epic disaster it just felt good not to have any bad categories; I missed two each in geo and layers, but got all but hate in French, all but J. Cole in music, and all but the St. John Ambulance TS in organizations.

I ran health and words, and got all but the Marc Andreessen TS in midwesterners (I would have also been stumped by Brittany Mahomes had they not used a picture that included Patrick), and missed two each in everything else in DJ, so not bad.

I knew English and Dutch were two of the answers to FJ, and Spanish seemed like a reasonable guess for the third, so that worked out well.

Hmmm…
Sure:

  • This compound word referring to someone who spoils things for others doesn't refer to an actual murder

— especially since no one heard me yelling "Killjoy!" (one of many monikers bequeathed upon me by my kids).

And even though there are horror shows and movies (mostly spoofs, I think) showing someone about to be killed by a buzzsaw, I think the phrase in the clue "doesn't refer to an actual murder" is covered by the popular useage of the term "buzzkill."

I did not get FJ, but I did get 6 of 13 TSs and 1 missed DD:
Ganges, cigarette, [linseed] oil, Bewitched, Bonanza, and Mets

And I knew 2 more: fondant, This American Life

Or, would "linseed oil" not count?
That is, had I responded to:

  • In painting your masterpiece, it's "fat over lean": each successive layer should have a higher content of this standard medium

with:

  • What is linseed oil?

Would Ken have responded with something about that being too specific?

I got a little hung up on "standard" in "standard medium," and thought they were looking for a specific medium, so not Stand Oil, or Sun Thickened Linseed Oil, etc.
But I guess they were going for any oil used in oil painting, including, say, Poppy Seed Oil.

Actually, I vote "No", since, while it fits the clue (This compound word referring to someone who spoils things for others doesn't refer to an actual murder), it does not fit the category (Emotional words?) Killjoy (the answer) contains "Joy" (an emotion). Other correct answers in the category: Bitters (bitter), Shyster (shy), Tympanic (panic), Serendipity (pity). Unless you are arguing that "buzz" is an emotion, buzzkill does not fit the category.

@illdoc, I gave you a sad reaction, but I'm actually laughing about it.  I don't think I can argue for buzz being an emotion, although one can be buzzed in a variety of ways, including buzzing with happiness.

I think you could make a case for it. From the Cambridge Dictionary

Quote

buzz noun (EXCITEMENT)

C2 [ C usually singular ] informal

a feeling of excitement, energy, and pleasure that something gives you

Other dictionaries (other than the Oxford English Dictionary - which is very particular) have a similar meaning. On the other hand, I said Buzzkill too, so I want to believe it's a valid answer. 😆

Pretty good first round…missed two in Samuel Beckett and one each in everything else. Not so much in DJ…I missed one each in 20th Century America and Fly Me to the Moon, two in Capes and Vocabulary, three in 3 of a Kind (fitting, I guess), and four in Books.

FJ was actually pretty much an instaget…in Opera of all things!

TSes: (J had 3; DJ had 8) I got Chevy (total guess) and Ethel Barrymore (but only after she gave me Barrymore…).

I love Isaac's adventures in weight training..."Just goes to show you can work really hard and it doesn't matter at all."

I was wondering about the BMS asked for her? Drew was in the clue were there other famous female Barrymore's? the pic wasn't John or Lionel.

Got the TSs of Chevy, Underwood, Ethel Barrymore, tribes of Israel and Baron Munchausen. I got as far as The Song of Roland for the paladins/knights clue but that's as far as I got.

ETA: I also got FJ

Ken's response to Stephanie's story about a glow stick exploding in her mouth at a middle-school dance, "That's like a superhero origin story!" seems like it would be a life-long treasured memory for her.
Ken's remark, that is. I don't think the exploding glow stick memory would be "treasured."

Same on Barrymore, but I got Chevy after Isaac guessed "Ford," because I thought a car brand dispute in a Country Music song would be a Chevy vs. Ford thing:

  • Not sure what Rhett Akins drove, but it wasn't a 4x4 from this brand because "that ain't my truck" in his girl's driveway

Yeah, I figured it'd be an American brand; I guessed "Ford? or Chevy?" but hadn't settled on one until Ford was ruled wrong. Those and Dodge are the ones I'd most associate with pick-up trucks. And I figured a 4x4 truck meant a pick-up (but I could be wrong because I know very little about cars), and what other kind of truck is likely to be in the girlfriend's driveway in a country song?).

The Ethel Barrymore TS was a bummer.

I ran Spanish and Waiting For and got all but Mortal Kombat in games (to me, "Finish him" calls to mind The Karate Kid, but obviously that wasn't it; I know nothing about MK other than it exists, so had nothing), but I was off my game in the first round -- I missed three in Beckett and two each in the rest.

I did not get any better in DJ; I ran America and vocabulary, but blew books entirely (since "Something Close" does not count for the $200 clue), and missed three in 3 of a Kind and two each in the rest.

Based on that performance and the category, I fully expected to fail at FJ, but it wound up being an instaguess.

Not that it affects the outcome, but ... IMO, they should not have accepted "dark side of the moon." It may be a popular phrase but it is incorrect. ("Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it a leg.")

This is what Andy said in The Jeopardy! Fan.

Quote

Andy’s Thoughts:

With the notable exception of titles—which generally need a publication citation to be accepted—the judges have historically used what amounts to descriptivism instead of prescriptivism, in that popular usage of an otherwise incorrect term (or pronunciation) will render an otherwise incorrect response correct. It should also be noted that “dark side of the moon” has historically meant “the unknown side of the moon” as opposed to “the unlit side of the moon”.

Jeopardy often accepts common parlance for things, as I do (mostly).  My mister, however, did not and thoroughly (overly) explained the difference (as if I didn't know). LOL.

I groaned when "Opera" was revealed, and happily surprised when I realized I actually knew the answer. (or rather, guessed rather easily)

We are enjoying Isaac's run for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I love his sense of humour, and his lack of buzzer-killing. Secondly, he's scarily alike Mr Bliss (from about 40 years ago) in looks and body type. The mister has those same long, slim limbs that no amount of body-building seems to change.

I sincerely hope his dad is proud of him for his J! success.

Not a great game...In J I ran Big Bands, missed one in Crime History and TSA, two in Stock Tickers, and three in Novels and "Zen". In DJ I ran The Human Body, missed one in A Shapely Category, four in World Capital Attractions, and three each in the rest.

I got FJ, not quite insta but pretty quick. Apes made me think Tarzan first but Baghdad got me to Sinbad.

TSes: (J had 3; DJ had 7) I got airbag, Pyongyang, lanugo, spleen, Purina, and charbroiled (which I'm counting even though they accepted chargrilled later).

Four corrections in one go. That might be a record.

Well, boo - I was rooting for Anna.

Isaac's pronunciation of carotid was a new one for me.

I missed two in zen, but still had a good first round -- I ran crime, bands, and TSA, and got all but The Stranger in novels and all but Vodafone in stocks (I know it wasn't Video On Demand, but that's what VOD means to me and I could not get past it to try to think of a company).

I only ran capitals in DJ, but it was also a good round.  I missed three in ancient, but just two in sequels, and I got all but lanugo in body (I usually run body part categories, but I'd never even heard of that one), all but milquetoast in words (it was coming to me, but didn't quite make it from my brain to my mouth in time), and all but magic square in shapely.

I had no idea for FJ, though.  I've never read it or seen any of the films, but once it was revealed I thought oh jeez, there was enough in the clue to get me there via cultural osmosis.  Oops.

Instaget FJ for me.

Did Anna just forget how much money she had? What was that FJ wager!? It wasn’t a runaway game, she had just more than half of Isaac’s total! The only possible way for her to win is to bet it at least $9601. It’s obvious the most Isaac will wager is $201 so she guaranteed herself a loss.

Yeah it ended up not mattering because Isaac got it right anyway, but if you aren’t going to try to win what is the point?
