Chit-Chat: What's On Your Mind Today?

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

We all have been drawn into off-topic discussions, me included. There's little that's off-topic when it comes to Chit Chat, so the only ask is that you please remember that this is the Chit Chat topic and that there's a subforum for all things health and wellness here.

If there's something you need clarification on, please keep in mind that it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; talk to them and not about what they said.
If you disagree, consider how we can express our differing opinions and still respect the other's opinion and recognize it as valid.
We're all different people, so different perspectives and points of views are natural, welcome even for growing a healthy community. What is important is that we disagree with empathy and consideration. (If need be, check out the how do we have healthy debates guidelines for more).

I know I'm too late for Anduin's post, but I keep a note of what to bring on trips in the Notes app on my phone. I mostly visit my grandkids, so the list changes according to the weather, but I always have chargers and medicine on my list. I'd be lost if I couldn't charge my devices or take my meds. Having a list helps!

Does anyone else worry about posters stop posting? I'm really concerned about a friend I've made here who hasn't posted in a few days. It's funny. We learn a lot about other posters, but we don't really know important info like their names! Anyway, she's in my thoughts and I really hope all is well.

Yes. I had a friend here, only here, and she disappeared at the end of 2019/early 2020.

I went through a baseball phase, with Cleveland, and it ended when they broke up the team, and one guy was demanding $50 million. When he got that from another team, he said it wasn’t about the money.

I prefer to wear lighter shoes on the plane, but if space is an issue in your bag, wear the heavier ones.

I have Raynaud's, so I'd take a pair of light gloves, too.

What about swimwear?

Have a great trip!

Yeah, I'm going to take a dip in the North Sea during a spring that I hear isn't actually happening yet. :) No, I'm not not much of a swimmer these days. If I need gloves I'll buy them over there.

I'm still here for a couple more hours. Anyway, thanks for your help, everyone!

@Anduin If you have a small collapsible umbrella it might be handy. I usually take a scarf when I travel there because if I can keep my neck warm the rest of my body can usually acclimate. Don’t forget to take important phone numbers, a copy of your passport, insurance information and any medications you take. Plus things like Advil aren’t usually in stock over there. They use paracetamol. I also take some pepto bismol and Imodium just in case. Take a few clothes pins to help you hang sink laundry to dry or keep curtains closed. A few safety pins “in case”. A small baggie will hold all of those items. When you aren’t feeling well you don’t want to have to search for a pharmacy. Enjoy your trip and wave to my relatives please.

Britain & Ireland. Yes, yes, yes, my hair is too short. :)

Yes, have a great time although I'm sure you will.  I've been there twice and both times were magical.  I have roots in Britain and my husband's father was born in Ireland there so we visited many of his cousins all over the country.  We were able to stay with them so we didn't have to stay in a hotel for more than a couple of nights.  What an experience.  One of my favorite things was taking a train from Dublin to Waterford to see the crystal factory and of course touring Guinness and Bushmills.  I had the best lamb meal of my life and sticky toffee pudding on that trip.

I'm having the best time. on Catchy TV they're having a Warner Brothers cartoon marathon. All the classics, Bugs making the hillbillys fight during a square dance, Marc Anthony the big bulldog and his tine kitten, Kill the Wabbit and Tweety screwing over poor Sylvester every chance he gets. Oh, this is too much fun!

Are these cartoons the originals? I guess I'm a cartoon snob as I love the old cartoons, voiced by Mel Blanc?? and others. Those non-Disney cartoons were really created for adults. I can vaguely remember two of these gems that I saw several years ago. One featured a cat chasing a bird up into an apt bldg. He followed the bird out a window & crashed to the sidewalk. His *spirit* rose up and continued the chase. I was astonished! The other featured Bugs being kind of smart-assy to a pathetic hospitalized Elmer, I think.  Definitely not for children🙀

You never know!  I know people who scuba dive in the polar regions (Antarctica!  Iceland!), and other people who do swim in the North Sea.  I am not one of them, mind you, but there are crazy people who do.

Totally original. I'm quite the Bugs Bunny connoisseur myself, I hate the new shit. I used to watch them with my dad when I was a kid. My mom just rolled her eyes. Lol, I think kids can handle it.

You can still watch these on Saturday mornings in MeTV  which airs The Bugs Bunny Road Runner Show, along with Tom & Jerry, Popeye, and The Woody Woodpecker Show.

@Anduin I hope this isn't too late but I was in Ireland in the middle of August last year and I was cold the entire time!  Please take some kind of a warm jacket or perhaps you will need to buy one when you get there.

Have a wonderful time, it's a great place to visit.  Hope the weather cooperates but I am sure you will enjoy nonetheless.

Yes, this is the way I feel about the L.A. Dodgers (I'm a lifelong SF Giants/Warriors fan so my hate extends to the Lakers as well and is further fueled by LeBron joining them...). Its just one of those impenetrable realities of life - regional sports rivalries are the most fraught and passionate, if you care at all.

I hope those people are okay as well.  Perhaps they were having some other things going on.  I wasn't posting much lately mainly because I have had various health issues that don't seem to be totally resolved yet.  Since February I've had serious balance issues when walking mainly and no one seems to be sure yet why.  It's put a lot of plans I had on hold at the moment.  I do have a session with a vestibular therapist scheduled so will see if that helps.

On another note entirely, has anyone here had a crown fall out of their mouth?  On a weekend??  Fortunately I was able to reach my dentist's office and they relayed this to him and they said to call him first thing Monday so he could fit me in.  And here I have always told people what great luck I've had with my teeth.  I literally cannot remember the last time I had even a filling done.  So I am sure this crown is very old but I did clean it off and put in in a little baggie.  I hope they can re-attach it but if not at least I'm fortunately not in any pain, I just have some sensitivity.  They said I could eat on the other side of my mouth but I'm afraid of anything crunchy.  So I have to think of a soft food for one more night.  Maybe some polenta?

I had that balance thing once.  It turned out to be a “ middle ear infection”.  Antibiotics put my balance back in order.

I also get bummed when regulars disappear. I always hope they're alright and just got busy. If you're someone whose posts I regularly like and get a new name for some reason, please message me to let me know! There was someone who did that awhile back (not revealing who it was), and I really appreciated that she considered me her virtual friend and said hello. I knew to keep an eye out for her posts. :)

Aw you're a sweetie and most people here are nice, but I've experienced when someone has been uh strong with me shall we say. It makes me sad if someone left because they felt unwelcome. I think sometimes people don't realize how harsh they can be and forget the person whose posts they're picking apart could very well be a kid, someone from a totally different generation, culture, etc. I guess it's asking a lot to make a forum feel like a safe space for everyone.

I just try to appreciate all the kind folks and not let the occasional not so kind person get to me. I don't know what people get from being mean to strangers on the internet. I guess they can't possibly be living happy lives, not that it's an excuse. When I'm sad I might vent here, but I'd never want to hurt anyone's feelings, not intentionally.

So many people going to Ireland, etc. this summer.  Anyone ever watch the movie “Leap Year”?   A very cute movie starring Amy Adams.  Beautiful views of Ireland .  It could be on Netflix or Prime video, etc.  A feel good romantic comedy.    Another one I watched today about Italy.  “Only You” starring Marissa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr.  Beautiful views of the Amalfi Coast and Rome.

Oh me too.  My husband and I often recall and reminisce specific Looney Tunes cartoons we remember from when we were kids.  Then we find a YouTube video of it and go down memory lane.  We just watched that one where Bugs plays a concert piano.  Those cartoons taught us about everything in life including classical music.  The new cartoons are so milquetoast by comparison.  One of our good friends raised his now 30 something kids to watch Bugs and friends because he hated the new cartoons.  We applauded him for that.

I've seen a lot of posters disappear in the past few years myself.  Some were very prolific and then "poof" one day they were gone seemingly in mid-sentence.  I worried about the ones that disappeared during the height of the pandemic, especially older ones.  Also one that was posting about suffering from a lot of stress. Every now and then I go look at their board profiles to see if maybe they came back.  In one case I saw the person liked a few posts months after they stopped posting and I thought maybe they'd come back but they never did that again.  I only hope these people are OK.

Don't take this the wrong way, but yeah, you don't understand how being a sports fan works! 😉

There's nothing quite as satisfying as a life-long sports grudge/hate.  Just ask me about any NYC sports team - or better yet, don't...

Lol!   I’m not a big sports person and I don’t really hate them necessarily but if there’s a team I root against it would be the Boston Red Sox.

Being a Bronx native relocated to Red Sox country I have had my share of people razz me over the years about the Yankees but despite loving baseball in theory I was never a die hard fan that had that kind of ardent loyalty to the Yankees.  So seeing people react this way to me just based on where I was from always bugged me.  I didn't really care that much either way.  My favorite boss was from Boston and he used to tell me I was forgiven because I was from the Bronx so it wasn't my fault, LOL.  I have been up in this area for 23 years now and I am still not against either team and like hearing that they're doing well.  And if they end up playing against each other that's OK too.  I know real sports fans can't wrap their minds around this but I like being this way and wouldn't want to clash with anyone over a sports team.

I watched most of my cartoons with my younger brother. We also watched Tarzan and some horror type movies like THEM!, a movie about giant ants attacking. As he got older, he was interested in shows like Combat, which held little interest for me. I guess I'm giving away my age! My husband and I recently watched all of Rockford and Columbo and now we're watching Dragnet and My Favorite Martian on Tubi! We watch other more current stuff too, but that's usually first. These days, I'm helping my brother find a new place to retire to, after our Mom passed away. Such is life!

@BetyBee, I like watching the Match Game (1973 -1982) and Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour (1983) and Tattletales (1974-1977) on BUZZR.
It's fun to guess what the popular answer would be for those times.
And I like looking up the stars to see what became of them, although it's sad that a lot of them died of diseases that would not be so fatal today.
However, a lot of the humor is a cringe fest. I should probably swap out some of that time listening to uplifting podcasts, like Hidden Brain, or just my local public radio.
But the nice thing about the game shows is that you can go answer a phone call and come back and it doesn't matter.
And you can just listen to it while doing other stuff.
If you don't get BUZZR on your TV, it's free at buzzrtv.com/watch

In the last couple of years I've been watching the original Perry Mason and Matlock, but I'm nearing the end of that obsession.

I loved The Rockford Files. The writing, the character actors, James Garner, the opening credits music, the stories. "Angel" was my favorite of Jimmy's pals. That show + LA Law, Hill Street Blues, Designing Women, MTM Show, The Lou Grant Show...why aren't there shows like these on TV today? Or. are they on premium channels only?

Old Match Game and Hollywood Squares were absolutely hilarious -- and yes a cringefest now.  Gene Rayburn had such a good leering delivery with his long microphone.  Still fun to rewatch.

I liked the reboot of Match Game also, with Alec Baldwin, but now they'll never bring it back, at least with him.

Do you know the Thalia theater on West 95th Street?  It used to be a repertory cinema.  They had a jumbo Looney Toons retrospective in the 80s.  It was fun to see those cartoons as an adult.  As a kid I always got a kick out of the celebrity cameos, like Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart.  Here's a compilation of Frank Sinatra appearances.  They always made fun of how skinny he was.

I love the older ones especially for the Golden Age cameos but also the artwork, backrounds and music are what really make Warner Brothers cartoons stand head and shoulders above other cartoons.  Think about all that scenery and incidental interiors. All hand painted.

Yes that's what I meant to say about the Road Runners.  The colors and design just looked so great on the big screen.  The attention to detail is really impressive, and of course they were so inventive. And I still laugh if I see the name "Acme" used in any other context.

They had one on last night about dodos, I think it was called Dough for the Dodo and the backrounds had very strong influences of everyone from Dali to Escher. It was fascinating to look at. I couldn't tell you the plot, lol.

I miss watching things like The Closer, with my mum. I was just saying yesterday, I miss going downstairs and her being somewhere there. After she lost her business in the crash in 2007, she would come upstairs in the middle of the night, when she couldn’t sleep.  I knew about one of those dodgy sites to watch shows on - I think that was one of them, in 2008 - and one had The Closer, and that’s where she started to watch it. We then DVR’d the rest, every season.  Same with Medium, Burn Notice, etc.

when I was a teenager, we watched the English shows on PBS, as a family.  I can’t watch them anymore. We used to share books, too.

Kristen, Olivia's summons is for jury duty. It's probably the initial questionnaire that they send, which you have to fill out and then send back. There may be a way to do it online, but I'm not sure.

Also, it's been a while since all of the NYC boroughs have had a 25 mph speed limit, regardless of school zones. My dear, late father-in-law lived in Flatbush, Brooklyn, which is sort of in the middle of the borough: as in when you exit the parkway, you have to drive quite the distance on the streets to reach his home. It was pure torture doing only 25 mph and getting stopped at almost every traffic light.

Kristen, Olivia's summons is for jury duty. It's probably the initial questionnaire that they send, which you have to fill out and then send back. There may be a way to do it online, but I'm not sure.

Oh, I didn’t know Olivia had a jury duty summons.

We hadn’t been in Queens by car for about twenty years.  Yikes.
