I like Grace MaCallum.  I would love it if she could make the 2020 US Olympic Team.  But with a 4 person team, I am not sure how anyone can.  Bring back the 6 or 7 member team, please.

I thought it was crazy to have only a five member team but four is just way too few. They really need to be at least six members.

It’s going back to a 5 member team next quad. This group got screwed with a 4 person team, USAG, loss of monthly camps, etc.

I honestly believe Mykayla has a chance at 2020

It seems like a waste though. They’ve got Jade and Simone, so why get another floor and vault specialist?

But I’m biased because I really don’t like her.

So everything about California's new law that says college athletes can make money off their name and likeness has been about the big moneymakers of football and basketball. But I actually think the effect on gymnastics might be more interesting.

So gymnastics is like the one sport where athletes have to choose if they'll go pro at a very young age or take the college route. Jordyn Wieber made the choice to go pro and it may have been the wrong one. For Simone Biles, the endorsement offers were getting to be too much. She had committed to UCLA and the coach there tried to convince her to stay amateur, but the money she was being offered was too much to turn down. Now, if this Cali law goes through, gymnasts may not be stuck in that conundrum anymore. They would be able to take money for endorsements and still be eligible for college.

Note: The law does not take effect until 2023 and the NCAA is probably going to fight these laws tooth and nail, so we'll see where it ends up, but I still think the possibility of what could happen is worth talking about.

I think the outrage over the rating of Simone’s balance beam dismount is warranted given the explanation for the rating. They are worried about it being dangerous because you could land on your neck? The entire sport is dangerous. There’s always opportunity for injury. If they want to discourage gymnasts who aren’t ready from trying it, then they need to lower the EXECUTION score, not lessen the difficulty.

Jade is going the individual route so she cannot get a spot on the team. That leaves a vault/floor spot open that Mykayla can fill very easily if she continues to work on her form and get better.

I don’t just mean for team. I think the US could pick any of their top twenty and still be the front runners for gold in the team competition. It seems like a waste to have a floor and vault specialist who most likely wouldn’t make event finals based on the two per country rule. I don’t see MyKayla getting in to event finals over Simone and Jade unless they majorly screw up. So why pick someone who won’t add to the US chances of getting more medals? In Rio every member of the team made an event final, and all but one medaled in an event final. I don’t think that would happen if MyKayla is on the team.

There’s no one else, with the exception of Jade and Simone, who can match what she brings on vault and Jade cannot be on the team. Not to mention she has the potential of a very high difficulty score on balance beam and her floor is perfectly useable. Her bars aren’t the best, but if she had to go up her score wouldn’t tank the team. She also has another year before the Olympics and can hopefully clean everything up

In terms of event finals, it doesn’t really factor into the team dynamic that much with the specialist roles in place. Whosever takes a specialist role is likely to get an EF spot because that’s their speciality. If, for example, Riley goes for UB/BB and jade takes VT/FL, then we can assume that the four girls on the team are competing for four EF spots, which will all be likely taken by Simone. That means three girls on the team are potentially competing for the team medal only. Therefore, maximizing medals isn’t a priority for the team selection if you pick the right specialists.

I hope the US is not counting on Riley to be a specialist! She is way too inconsistent to be counted on for anything.

If I got to pick the Olympic team it would be Simone, Sunisa, Morgan, and Grace. The specialists would be Jade and Kara. I know that is not going to happen though.

ETA: Assuming Morgan has a better year next year.

Does Morgan have a chance to improve prior to the Olympic trials? Are there any major competitions after the World Championships that could help her chances?

Did Grace McCallum make any of the event finals for World's?  I am certain that Simone Biles made ALL of them.

Sad that Brazil didn't make it for the Olympics.

Simone qualified for all, Sunisa AA, bars, floor, and Jade vault. Kara did qualify for beam and dropped after the inquiry.

2018 Worlds I believe Grace was one of the reserves for vault final.

The US Women are World Champions again. I think they said on the broadcast that's it's the 5th in a row for the women and 7 out of 9.

It's the 21st medal for Simone Biles making her the most decorated woman. She could become the most decorated World Championship medalist between both men and women with 3 more medals.

Definitely the USA, but not sure about the World.

I feel bad for Tingting.  If she was sick, injured, or if she was just having a very bad day.

And so happy for Italy- they were so happy and excited.

So I was actually wondering if Jade would've gone the individual route if Martha was here. I also love seeing France and Brazil. Melanie is so talented.

Simone makes everything look so easy. I'm surprised she has mostly been injury free since her skills are so hard on the body.

The program ran long and cut off before the beginning of the final rotation. I hope Olympic Channel's rebroadcast tonight shows it, even if it means cutting half an hour off the next scheduled show.

The NCAA will just kick all the California college teams out of the NCAA and/or disqualify any California team with a player that has gone “pro”.

Ordinarily I'd say you're right. But the California law has inspired a wave of other states to consider similar legislation. I believe there's even a federal legislator considering writing a bill in Congress. The NCAA can't kick out all the states. I still think the NCAA will sue to stop it, but honestly their best choice might be to accept it and try to get ahold of this issue before it gets out of hand.

WTH is up with this new "Kiss and Cry" area? Let the gymnasts have their privacy after a routine, FFS. Watching poor Sunisa have to sit there, alone, after her bars and wait for what she knew was going to be a bad score is heartless. She needs a hug and some kind words, not to have to sit there by herself.

Brooklyn Moors is absolutely breathtaking on the floor.

Who is tumbling to Danse Macabre? I love it when someone chooses Halloween music for Worlds.

Gutted for poor Melanie. She's such a beautiful gymnast. Hopefully event finals will go  better for her and Suni.

Loved Nina's sassy choreography on floor. Also loved Flavia's floor set. Great showmanship from both of them.

Way to finish strong, Suni! And congratulations again to Simone!!!

Absolutely not. She would have made sure both spots were nominative so she and the team selection committee could pick who got the spots and I wouldn't have blamed them for doing it that way. If Jade in any way gets injured her spot goes to the next athlete on the list that is most likely from a different country. That's why if Jade earns her individual spot USAG HAS to put their foot down and tell her she can't try for the team spot and cannot compete at Olympic Trials.

As for today's events...YES!!!!!!!! RUSSIA WIN GOLD!!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️ The final was AMAZING and a back-and-forth the entire way. USA got fourth, but everyone hit and Sam redeemed his qualifications disaster from the other day.

I agree. I don't believe Martha would've allowed her to do this. It's crazy how things are different without her.

Ugh Simone. I'm saying ugh in a good way. She is just too good and amazing. Sad this is her last Worlds. I'm surprised by Italy and I'm happy for Russia getting second. I wonder where Morgan fits in. I wouldn't count her out yet but the talent is just too deep. Simone is basically the only one locked right now.

Thirded, and I don’t think Jade should have been allowed to go this route by anyone, but USA gymnastics has been in such a shambles and was in such a particular mess when Jade first went for this that I could fully believe it just slipped through. I do think they absolutely need to deny her the chance to try out for the team.

Simone is amazing. I felt for Suni. Looks like she could use some help in mental toughness. She’s beautiful when she’s on.

Can’t wait to see which version of Sam shows up to the men’s all around.

I didn't think he qualified for any event finals.  Which ones?

I'm sorry he didn't medal, but he did so well on the high bar/rings....I hope he can go home with some satisfaction of having done well.  I liked the interview he gave with gymcastic after the AA.

Unbelievable. This is especially infuriating because there has been more than once instance of Russian media accusing Simone Biles (and sometimes Serena Williams) of doping. Komova even tweeted it after the Russia didn't get a team medal in 2015, she called the Americans "steroid users" (this after she'd fallen from the beam!). Paseka has said similar things. This is infuriating. I doubt any of them juiced (mainly because it doesn't really help you in gymnastics) but for any of them to point the finger at a better team...fuck that noise.

(I still haven't forgiven Russia for gifting Sotnikova the gold in Sochi. What an embarrassment that was. Golds at any cost, I guess.)

Russians Face Ban from 2020 Olympics

You'd think after the 2014/2016/2018 Olympics Russia would have learned their lesson to stop doping athletes.

If this is true, then I hope the IOC FINALLY puts their foot down and outright bans Russia as they should have done in 2018. No "Olympic Athlete from Russia"- an outright ban of anyone competing from there.

I'd be devastated for the Russian WAG and MAG teams, but I am so tired of Russia being allowed to get away with cheating.

They really should have banned them after the huge system wide doping but since they didn't do that. I have zero confidence IOC will ban them this time. Their too much of cowards or love their bribes from Russia way too much to ever do that. It really sucks.

Sam CONTINUES to break everyone’s heart. He seems like an absolute sweetheart and has everything required to be AA champion and it never comes together. I wish I could stop being a fan, but I can’t. Sigh.

He's a loser.  He's not breaking anyone's heart--he continually flubs up.  Why do you expect anything more from this choker?  Usually he collapses on the easiest element of the routine too.

I'm disgusted that the commentators continually make excuses for him.  He woke up "and didn't feel awake all day"?  I would have laughed him out of the stadium.  He has the talent.  He needs to go see a sports psychologist or he needs to sit home during major competitions.  Or maybe he should practice with the women's team--he alone has more spills, falls and errors than THE ENTIRE WOMEN'S TEAM COMBINED.

I don't feel sorry for him.  I am disgusted.

Same here. He has the talent and he should be so much better then he is. But he never pulls it off. I'm laughing at the 'didn't feel awake'. Gee, if that's his problem tell him to throw water on his face or drink more coffee. Its ridiculous. I don't feel sorry for him either. He's the one who keeps messing it up. Whether he chokes or what he's not doing anything to fix it.

They need to ban Russian instead of giving them a slap on the wrist. Any other country I don't think the IOC would give them so many chances. A Russian skater was also caught doping too.

Yes! At his level, if someone shook him awake at 3 am and told him to go perform his routines right on the spot, wearing his pajamas and with unbrushed teeth, he should be able to do so flawlessly. Certainly any of the men on team Russia, China, or Japan would be able to. I’ve been saying for years that what he needs to work on is his mental game. It doesn’t matter if you have great skills if you can’t perform them when it matters. I also rolled my eyes at his assertion that he had added the pommelhorse element he fell on to be competitive and that if he had landed it he would have been second or third. Because the way I saw it, he was in fourth after floor, with all of his huge scoring events behind him and his two lowest scoring and weakest events to go. He was expecting to CLIMB in the standings on those events? I often wonder what it’s like to live in Sam’s world. It seems entirely dissimilar from the world the rest of us live in.

As for Russia and the “shocking” revelation they’re still doping—at what point does everyone else get fed up with the IOC and do something about it? I’m frustrated as a viewer; I can’t imagine how I’d feel if I were an athlete who was competitive in my field and had to show up to Olympic events knowing that cheaters are being given a slap on the wrist and sent out to compete alongside me. Maybe it’s time for an “alterna-Olympics” that all the non-doping countries are invited to.

I agree so much about Sam Mikulak. The talent is there, but he just squanders it. It’s so frustrating to watch.

I feel the same way about Riley McCusker, but she’s been a senior for two years. Sam has had plenty of time to fix his issue, and he just hasn’t.

I'm going to sit at the table with the people who have no sympathy for Sam. Quite frankly, I've been over our men's team since 2016 when they bitched and moaned that they didn't get the attention that the women do and actually said that maybe they should complete shirtless. They completely ignored the fact that the women get their attention because they are beasts of competitors that win everything coming and going while the men do the exact opposite.

On the subject of leotards: I'm loving that the USA has embraced blue. I loved the periwinkle leos they wore for qualifying, they were stunning.

So Russia is doping, huh? This just in, water was found to be wet,

And if I may go against the grain here, I find Simone's floor atrocious and undeserving of a world title. Her tumbling was out of control and the less said about the choreography the better.

I love Simone’s tumbling. I do. I think her incredible feats on the floor are deserving of a world title. She’s my favorite gymnast.

However.

I agree that I hate the choreography in between the tumbling. It really became noticeable for me during the Worlds this year. I adore the gymnasts who actually *dance* in between tumbling. One person that sticks out is Melanie from France. I love watching her floor routine because she actually dances! At this point, I think they (IOC) need to decide if they actually want the gymnasts dancing between tumbling or if they should just go the route of the men. This in between land is not working for me. JMO.
