I heard from someone not to ask or discuss this movie before seeing it as it would let some of the air out of its balloon. I’m so glad I listened. I was prepared to just let it take me on a journey and boy did it deliver. Ioved it and plan to watch it again. What a fun visual rollercoaster. I hope it wins lots of awards.

The first time I watched it I kind of mind wandered off in the middle...and by the end I thought what the hell?  It did make me want to come back though, and during the second time with it I got way more out if it.

I watched it a few nights ago and had sort of the same experience. I was kind of tired so the middle part was kind of hard to follow. But the last bit, basically when she realized that Waymond's secret weapon was kindness was amazing. Especially the whole part with Evelyn and her daughter outside the laundromat when she was trying to leave. The speech about how she always wants to be with her daughter no matter what she does was soo good both the writing itself and all three actors in that scene.

It did make me want to come back though, and during the second time with it I got way more out if it.  Sometimes films like this you have to relax yourself into the story and action and let it's magic really work it's way over you.  Now it's my fave film of the year.

I did love it the first time, and was surprised at what an emotional connection I made with it, because I had gone into it thinking it was just going to be wild and colorful and something to enjoy. But yeah, it's definitely a worthwhile second-viewing film. There are some things in the opening scenes that mean more when you see where it ultimately goes.

I think I see now what the Daniels were trying to achieve in 2016's Swiss Army Man, which had left me cold, although Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe were very good. This movie has a similar message, and a similar mix of silliness and heart, but it's as if this time they figured out the oven temperature.

I watched this again last night for the first time since seeing it in the theater.  I still really enjoyed it and I think what you get from the cast is worth the price of admission alone.  (I feel like in a different year, Stephanie Hsu would be a run away best supporting actress winner)  That said, its biggest flaw for me is still that the last 45 minutes or so suffers a bit under its own weight.  Instead of condensing its many morals, which by my count there were at least half a dozen, into 2 or 3, the final act feels very fractured and simply too long.  And just when you feel like we've gotten to the lesson and should be wrapping things up something else comes along.  I'd still root for this for best picture though.  I think the good parts of it plus how audacious it is checks a lot of boxes for me personally.  I just want it to be tighter and more focused.

ETA:  I also think the speech that Evelyn gives to Joy about all the infinite universes and the one Evelyn chooses to be in is the one with Joy would have been more powerful had she delivered it to Waymond.  Throughout the movie, we never see Evelyn resent Joy and Joy is the one thing that Evelyn continually tries to protect.  So other than telling Joy something that maybe she needed to hear, it feels like the wrong closure to that arc.  Evelyn had some things to learn about her relationship with her daughter, but life without her wasn't one of them.  On the other hand, it's Waymond, their marriage, and their business that Evelyn takes for granted.  And it's Waymond and his kind hearted nature that Evelyn has to learn to appreciate.  So it seems more fitting that that speech should be reserved for him.

Memory is kind of fuzzy, but in that scene didn’t we also cut back to the movie star universe Evelyn telling CEO Waymond to give them a chance?

While Evelyn does try to protect Joy, their relationship at the start of the movie is in a bad place and her unaccepting attitude toward Joy (which is translated into metaphor in the Alpha Universe where Alpha-Evelyn literally breaks Alpha-Joy's brain to create Jobu) is what creates the whole threat. Telling Joy that she wants to be with her exactly as she is is emotional payoff.

Unrelatedly, quite a dominating performance by the film at the SAG Awards. Such a great moment for James Hong, who spent so many years toiling in an industry that was never going to give him a fair shake.

This.  The mother-daughter relationship here is what resonated with me.  I also saw a tweet that changed the way I viewed the movie--Joy is suicidal.  She was getting in her car to drive off and end her life when Evelyn stopped her.  Evelyn's speech was exactly what Joy needed to hear in that moment to make her choose continuing to live.  This doesn't immediately fix the mother-daughter relationship, and they definitely have a long road ahead of them, but there is hope.

To be fair, in this case psychic power = having functioning eyes and ears while watching the movie.

It was an April movie. AMPAS doesn't necessarily have a good track record of recognizing movies released earlier in the year. They have in the past (Mad Max, Silence of the Lambs), but there's still a persistent bias towards movies released in the October-December window.

Plus, it's not the usual Oscar movie. It's weird, eccentric, hard to understand/follow at first, a majority minority cast. I'm glad it's recognized in a huge way, and the Oscars are ever so slowly moving towards recognizing movies other than their usual fanfare.

He was in so many TV shows when I was a child. As a devotee of old Perry Masons, I recognized him instantly from a couple of early-60s episodes in which he had important parts. (I think in one of them he might have been the defendant?)

I wanted to like this movie.  I watched it yesterday and just couldn’t understand why it received awards.  I thought it was pretentious and hard to follow.  I don’t think you have to be intuitive to get it.  I understand what it was about but the execution was all over the place.  Metaphors to everything bagels is not art.  It’s more of the writers saying “look how clever I am”.

The "Everything bagel" is a goofy pun, pretty emblematic of the film's approach, hardly what I'd call pretentious.

“Let’s just pretend this was a make-up for True Lies.” Yes, let’s.

I just figure it is because Jamie Lee Curtis has been working in Hollywood for decades and probably knows a significant number of the members of the academy voting for her award. Because the scene at the end of the end of the movie where Stephanie Hsu is outside the laundromat with Yeoh and trying to leave is some of the strongest and most memorable acting I have seen in a long time. And I don't think it was just Michelle Yeoh carrying the scene.

After that, giving Jamie the Oscar over Stephanie is equivalent to giving Harry Shum Jr. the Oscar over Ke Huy Quan.

No disrespect to either, but their parts in the movie were more or less the same.

Also no disrespect to either, but both Hsu and Yeoh (IMO) basically did the job we expect all actors to do. They are good actors. They "brought off" their roles. They did nothing extraordinary. (I'm not saying Jamie Lee Curtis did, either. The "outstandingness" of her performance was mostly down to wardrobing and makeup.)

We watched Die Hard the other night. (The original.) Wow, does that movie ever hold up. And it holds up in good measure because of two actually extraordinary performances, those of Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman. Neither of whom were nominated!

Speaking of Jamie Lee, whom I do like...The other night we watched an old Columbo, the one with Theodore Bikel as the villain. In a short restaurant scene, a young surly waitress comes over and has a few lines with Peter Falk. Mrs. Stone recognized her first.

I love the callback to another "what-if" movie - In The Mood For Love. It's little details like that that make the  movie really enjoyable, and the reason why I want to watch it again!

Did you know that Ke Huy Quan was an assistant director on 2046?

I saw Everything Everywhere All At Once when it first came out and was totally confused.  Then I saw it again last night on TV, and was less confused, and at one point said to Mr. Outlier, "Doesn't that look exactly like In the Mood For Love?  Even the people in the background."  I somehow completely missed that the first time I saw the movie, which illustrates the challenge I was having because I'm about as big a fan of Wong Kar-wai as you can get.

I understood it more after seeing it the second time, but still nowhere near completely, so I read a few articles explaining what was going on.   So now I do understand it, and I'm happy to know what I was missing, but it doesn't change how much I enjoyed it while watching it, and on that basis, it was a miss for me.

Personally, I thought all of the major performances (and some of the minor ones) in Everything Everywhere All At Once were lit up with a mad inspiration that not just anyone could have brought to it. I know from things the Daniels have said that the actors added a lot to their characters, be it behaviors or dialogue improvisations or even clothing choices. It seemed to me a movie in which everyone involved really cared about the work, the vision, and the message. It just looks like the product of a very harmonious set. (Sometimes one can be fooled about those things, but I don't think so here.)

I've been a Curtis fan since I saw the original Halloween much too young and really cared about what happened to this girl. It isn't surprising to me that she won for this over Stephanie Hsu. As pointed out above, she's a veteran in the business with a lot of friends and people she's worked with and for in the Academy. Fairly or not, that can be a factor when ballots are filled out. She's been in all kinds of films (usually doing distinguished work in them, even the bad ones), she hadn't won an Oscar, and she had a colorful, funny role with more to it than appears at the start to be the case.

For Hsu, probably the thinking was that the nomination itself was quite a feather in her cap. She's been acting a while, but she's still in her early thirties and a lot of her credits are, you know, "Protestor" in one episode of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Now she's Academy Award nominee Stephanie Hsu, who was a major player in one of the year's most lauded films. She probably won't be playing unnamed characters much now.

Yes! I read about that in an article where KHQ was detailing his struggles in Hollywood after roles dried up for him, that he went to work as an AD for 2046, and he took on other jobs working behind the scenes just to get by.

Actually, after seeing the ITMFL callback in EEAAO, I suddenly wanted to watch ITMFL again (for the nth time, loved that movie!). I hope the more casual viewers learn of that reference so they can also check out ITMFL, the movie that is commonly known as the "gateway to Asian cinema."

Am I the only person who didn’t like this movie?

I'm not crazy about it, either. When I first saw it, I could recognize some good technical things about it, but thought the story was ridiculous and kept considering walking out.  I watched it a second time because my son wanted my husband to see it and liked it a little better, but I still didn't understand all of the accolades it was getting.

I liked the movie. Or at least a lot of it, but there were also things that I did not like. My opinion is that it was a good movie but not so good that I would have nominated it for awards.

I thought it was okay...but as usual at least 1/2 hour too long (as with pretty much every movie nowadays except the latest Batman movie, which was an hour too long). A bit glib for all the accolades. The relationship between Evelyn and Joy needed more backstory to be really understandable. And the ultimate conclusion of learning to love your life the way it is (as opposed to yearning for something else) is not one that I can applaud really. Nothing wrong with aspiration in this world - settling begets bitterness, in my experience, which is why Evelyn is the way she is after all.
