S05E02: Group B Premiere - Shamrock and Roll

Recommended Posts

I'm so disappointed with this season so far it's been hard to compose this message.  While I like Niecy Nash, I don't like her as the host.  She's too loud and there's just something off-putting to me the way she handles her interaction with the contestants and the judges.  Is anyone else having a difficult time understanding the clues? To my ears, the contestants voices are garbled and the background music is overpowering.

I was so hoping the Phoenix was going to be either Laverne Cox or RuPaul. I've had enough of the Kardashian family!  Hope next week will be better....

I agree about Niecy. I like her very much, but perhaps as a permanent judge (ideally replacing Jenny, or just joining permanently.) I'm not that disappointed with the contestants (yet,) but I was distracted by how the panel didn't even change clothes for the second group. I mean, I know realistically all the groups were probably filmed on one long day, but dang. Different ep, different clothes! Anyway, I hope Nick can return soon.

Exactly.  Nick makes hosting look easy.

I compare Niecy to Nick and I vastly prefer Niecy.  She is loud but I think she is funny and refreshing.  I think it would be hilarious if Nick was indeed one of the contestants as suggested by Nicole.  I did notice some changes in production this year... louder background music for sure.  For this episode I noticed that Niecy didn't introduce each host by name, which makes sense since there's no actual audience to clap for them and it's just a waste of time.

Count me in among those who didn't need to see Caitlyn Jenner.  Truly terrible singer, like she was just speaking the words.  Does she have a big following?  Waste of a slot.  I like seeing celebrities who we didn't necessarily know could sing, like Chloe Kim last season.  Even people like Gronk, he was really bad, but at least he really had fun with it and was a good performer.  Caitlyn was all around just terrible.

Very obvious elimination, definitely the right call. Caitlyn Jenner really put no effort into this at all, normally the first few obvious non singers really ham it up and have fun before they get eliminated, she just seemed bored even in the costume.

I like Niecy a lot, but I admit that I miss Nick. Maybe I just need to get used to her, but Nick just has quality that works well for a host. He keeps the show going and adds jokes and bits while still keeping the focus on the singers.

This seasons singers are a bit less strong than last seasons, but I think it might be because the background music is even more over the top than usual. I cant hear anyone.

I agree about the music. I also don't like all the background dancers so early in the season. Just let them sing. Near the end they can ramp up the production.

My guess is the pig is Nick Lachey. I know that voice.

Pig is definitely Nick lol. I grew up with sisters  that LOVED 98 Degrees, BSB and Nsync PLUS I actually enjoyed songs from all 3 groups and I know that voice of his lol

I think Black Swan is Jojo. Of Get Out(Leave) and Too Little Too Late fame

I didn’t get to pay attention, last night, like I like too.  I think - the old monster character - might be Sir Mix A-Lot.

I don’t have a guess on anyone else.  The only thing I was pretty sure about, last night, was the Phoenix elimination. I was really confused.  I thought Phoenix was a woman.  Then sounded like a man, with a really familiar voice.  Go figure.

RuPaul definitely sings way better than Caitlyn.   Laverne Cox probably does too...LOL.    Would love one of them to be on the show.   There's always Group C.

As with the last season, the audience reaction shots really distract me.  I know last time there was no audience and they just used footage from past shows. This time it kind of looks like there may be people (or they have fake people spaced out a bit) but the audience shots still don't look real.  I get that the "contest" aspect is pretty weak, but splicing in reactions just makes it seem completely scripted.

Every season there is one voice I know for sure. This is it. I felt he tried to disguise his voice enough to throw off the panel since he knows each of them in some capacity, and even appeared on I Can See Your Voice the show Ken hosts.

What a waste of a Phoenix costume to be used on someone that was simply a “look who we booked” moment. At least Kermit can sing in key.

I didn't know I knew that voice until he started singing. But about 20 seconds in I was convinced that was Nick Lachey. I don't think I listened to much 98 Degrees but apparently during the late 90s and early 2000s, that's one that wormed its way into my brain.

I assume the Bachelor like clues are a reference to whatever that show is that Nick and Vanessa host.

I think the Bachelor clues were a red herring designed to throw people off to make people think it was Colton or Ben or somebody like that.  There was a particular emphasis about "I've handed out a lot of roses".  I'm not fully sure how this fits in with Nick.  He's only been married twice, is that considered "a lot"?  The only vague reference might be to the Miss USA pageant, which he and Vanessa hosted, but again, only twice.  Maybe the top 10 all get bouquets of flowers and 20 bouquets qualifies as "a lot of roses"?

When they showed a yellow rose, I thought it was someone from Texas.  Jessica Simpson was born in Texas.

I like Nick better as a host too.  Niecy is too loud.

I also agree about the background music.  The voices also seemed enhanced this season.  it just seems off.

Phoenix costume was gorgeous but that was just plain awful so I'm glad she was eliminated.

Pig is Nick Lachey and that's all I got.  At first, I thought Black Swan might be Leona Lewis only because of the X clue.  I don't know who Jojo is.

If memory serves, Laverne Cox did at least a little singing in the Fox version of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".  The production wasn't perfect, but she did well.

I *think* Caitlyn Jenner's biggest award in the past 10 years or so is the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

Overall, I wasn't blown away, but I'm not out for the season yet.
