It cracks me up when they start planning their elaborate and super cool costumes somewhere between 1 day to a couple of hours before the big party and then turn up in perfect outfits. It usually takes me considerably longer to put together a proper fancy dress.

So it’s been a long time since I was a teenager, but is this what the kids are doing these days at parties?  No parental supervision;; alcohol and drugs rampant even on school grounds; lapdances; girl on girl make outs - I’m not a prude and I know this is TV but is this actually what 15 year olds are up to these days?

No idea (no kids here), but HBO’s Euphoria makes modern adolescence look about 10x darker than this, so this show was actually a bit of a relief for me after watching that one.

Yea, I always find this kind of stuff so unbelievable when it shows up in every teen show, but then I have to remember I’m a)36 years old and b)not someone who was going to be invited to those kind of events in high school anyway lol.

Also, I actually know for a fact it did happen back then and that it’s maybe even more common now so I don’t know why the hell I always find it so unrealistic.

For me, the booze and drugs were happening, but from my perspective any significant teen sex was happening offstage. Way offstage. Couldn’t tell you why. A lot of us (for example) took acid for Senior Night at Disney, but I can’t recall any (for example) pregnancies, major scandals, love triangles, sex happening at house parties, etc. Some people were paired off and mostly stayed paired off through high school, but that was it. Any romance in my life was strictly occurring onscreen in John Hughes films. 🙂

(The EZ access to drugs may have been because this was south Florida during the Miami Vice days.)

I can remember kids my age (14, 15) talking about their parents being away for the weekend, so they could use their bed (and their friends boyfriends could be there, too). Not all in one bed, but getting together under one roof. One friend of mine had a boyfriend who was seventeen, and they were sleeping together. I wasn't a part of all of that. They would drink, too, but I was never really into that, either.

From my own experiences and talking with friends that didn't go to my high school, and my brother who went to a different school; alcohol, drugs, no parental supervision, sex, and random fights are all common in high school to varying degrees. Depends on how kids clique up what they'll be exposed to, but it'll happen. Kids have older siblings, or parents that are "cool" or European and don't care to share or give teens space. Or parents that at absentee/workaholics that leave homes empty often. Some kids look older than people assume based on how puberty hit them (ex, my 16 yr old 6'10 male friend got me a bottle of red wine for my 17th birthday and my brother a ). Teens lie about where they are, where they're going, and/or sneak out/into places. 

All that to say, teens are complex and hormonal pre-adults who sometime look, try to act, or are treated like adults too early and this show unsurprisingly gets that. I say unsurprisingly, because Degrassi got that and there is no way that show isn't an influence to the writers and actors. I can feel and see the Canadian influence all over this show (beyond casting).

There's a lot of drinking that goes on at parties in my area.  I photographed a sweet 16 were a kid arrived drunk off her ass (being dropped off by a parent) and had to be taken to the hospital for alcohol poisoning.  So many of the kids were drinking (in the bathrooms) and there were parents (and the venue provided security guard) there just basically ignoring the entire thing. I was shocked.

My kid doesn't get invited to those sorts of parties though.  Sometimes it's good having a kid who isn't social.

I think every generation has a “are high school kids really doing that?” show. The OC was tamer, because it was on broadcast during prime time, but they were drinking, having sex, and doing drugs on that show too.

I was not invited to these kind of parties but a guy i knew got alcohol poisoning at a party on a school sanctioned ski trip.   His family had a cabin near where everybody was supposed to be staying and a group of them slid off to the cabin for a party.  Kid had to have his stomach pumped/almost died and they cancelled the ski trip going forward as if the ski trip was the reason the kids had the party.   So this stuff absolutely did happen but not at the super dork ass parties I went to.

Rewatching: the voiceovers about scary movies finally made me realize the voiceovers are absolutely unnecessary to the show. 

I can’t tell if Abby is in love with Max, just jealous of new girl Ginny, or is just generally acting out about her home life stress.

I thought it was a combo of feeling like Ginny was taking her place in the friend group and just general acting out. Also though, there were a few moments (I don't remember exactly what they were lol) that made me wonder if she was maybe feeling attracted to Ginny.

I know! There isn't even the usual "if they're going to drink, I want them to do it at home and be safe" nonsense. When I was in high school, way back in the Jurassic Age (the drinking age was still 18!), it was mostly beer that anyone drank. I don't like beer—never have—but no one cared. Sex happened, of course, and there was always someone pregnant, but it didn't happen at parties. Just some heavy petting. I was certainly way too insecure about myself to have sex in high school. I was barely ready in college.

Went to one party held at the house of some sophomore back in 86 and when the guys gathered in the living room to watch porn, me and a couple other junior girls stole 2 cases of beer from the fridge.  This was as racy as it got.

I'm in my late twenties, and I totally went to no parental supervised parties like this all the time in high school. So to me this seemed normal. Of course, it's usually the same people at the parties because they are the ones who usually want to go and have either absentee parents or so called "cool" parents or just straight up lied to their parents lol. So for me the partying, the alcohol, the drugs, the sex- all seems to be pretty realistic of what went down at parties in high school. Not that it's right, just realistic.

Same. Between the way she's remarked on women's attractiveness before and wanting to makeout with Norah, I don't know if we're supposed to assume she's bi. I'm torn between wanting Max to get to a place where she can be happy with Sophie and wanting Abby to realize she has feelings for Max so she can be with someone who will help her love herself as she is.

Beyond the kids was the new neighbor encoring the recent widow to go out and get some. I guess that old mourning period ideal has been buried. And with Marcos needing to talk when everyone else had paired Ginny off with another i was half expecting him to tell her to get down to the free clinic, if such a ritzy town has one.

I grew up as a not rich kid in a very rich town and very simply, the rich kids definitely did party like this in high school.  For us "regular" kids we had part time jobs and our parents were strict and always home.  Meanwhile, sometimes the rich kids would invite me to parties and it was a fantasy land.  I was close with a guy whose parents retired in their 50s and were always travelling.  These kind of kids would always be throwing parties in ENORMOUS mansions.

Yes, you are correct. The conversation between Kenny's ex-wife and the PI occurred at the end of episode 2. I wrote a transcription of the conversation in that forum's thread because it went by so fast about Georgia's history. I thought it might come in handy in future episodes (for me and for others). And so it did!

I don’t think the teens drinking and having lots of sex is an accurate representation of the current reality. Study after study the last decade or so highlights just how little teens are having sex, drinking, doing drugs, etc. This show and Euphoria are shows made by adults and this is what they think teens are like but reality is different.

Yeah that was really weird especially because there was a whole plot about how Georgia needed someone to watch Austin so Paul did. I feel like she should've called out for a babysitter or something. Like "Carol, is Austin asleep?" or something. Just a mess up.
