2,201 steps yesterday. Just can't seem to get them up again...

Thanks everyone! I am really OK, been down this road before after DH passed away. It is just so cold very early this time of year. But I got my Chewy order today and can feed my kitties again and they make me smile so much!! How can 14 kitties not make you happy??

Cat ladies rule!  I only have one, but she makes me smile, too.  Good to hear you're doing OK.  I hate winter, too, and wish we could afford to be snowbirds.  A friend of ours lives in a trailer park at Lake Havasu four months of the year.  That sounds very nice, when it's below freezing here.  I always look forward to winter solstice, and knowing the days will get longer!

Oh wow. I only have two and they are all I can handle. But they also bring so much joy and I get love and kitty kisses from them, and some lap sitting. It helps every time I feel lonely. I'm their mama and it's all I need. I'm glad you have yours 😻

Ah, snowbirds. For a while I was stationed at Bullhead/Laughlin and there were so many of them down for the winter. They would all go to the casinos across in Laughlin and back to their trailers at might, or spend the warmer days soaking up the sun.

I don’t mind snow and cold. That’s what thermal tights and snow pants are for(I pretty much wear em all winter). The short days do get to me, but if we quit changing the clock and left it on summer hours, the days would seem longer. I just want it to be light at 5pm. But — I love seasons after over a decade in the desert. Winter was never long enough and in June, we reached 110 already. In Bullhead/Laughlin, the lows were in the 90s. The 90s! You wake up to run and are immediately drenched in sweat. The sun hits, and your skin starts to fry. I’ll never go back, except maybe to Flagstaff (applied for some jobs there at Walnut Canyon).

@Gramto6 I hope you are feeling okay (or okay enough) and I agree that kitties are a blessing. I've been in some very dark places in my own life but I always somehow come out of it eventually. I've had a lot of help - therapy, medication at times and so forth. I wanted to chime in and say what a godsend group therapy was for me. Now you can do it online. I'm in a weekly support group for people with my auto-immune condition (rare one that was diagnosed in April) and that helps a great deal now, because of course having an auto-immune condition can be depressing, and being immunocompromised causes its own anxiety. The group puts things in perspective and makes me feel less alone. Thanks to zoom, people from all over the world can join. We have people from New Zealand, South Africa, and other places.

Winters are hard when its cold - especially with the problems you've been facing, physically and with your home, even harder. I'd say depression is a natural reaction. The kitties need you  - and we need you, too. I strongly recommend finding a good therapist and/or online support group. You are in my thoughts. We all have to keep buoying ourselves and each other up. I hope you reach out to your children and 6 grandchildren too. I don't know how old the latter are but at a certain point perhaps you could do a weekly or bi-weekly video call with some of them, too. Grandparents are so important.

Take care and I hope you have enough heat and no more frozen pipes!

PS I also want to say that it helps to talk to yourself as gently and kindly as you would talk to the kitties. It's okay to be depressed, but not okay to beat yourself up for it, which is what some people do.

@Gramto6, I woke up to an ice storm here in Portland and find myself housebound for the foreseeable future. It made me think of your Montana winters.

I hope that you are doing okay and will enjoy the holiday weekend with your kitties.

I am down in Eugene and we didn’t get any snow but everything was iced over and a skating rink for 24 hours.   I had to rescue my older boxer in the backyard who was scared to death and didn’t understand why she was sliding all over the place.  I used cardboard to make a sled 😀

I am over this!!

Portland is supposed to start warming up tomorrow, which means everything will be icy.

My exercise will be indoors on an exercise bike.

My brother flew here (metro Atlanta) from Portland today. Three hour delay and pilot said it was the only commercial flight to take off by that time and everything else was cancelled. It is cold here - hoping it passes without too much fuss as in frozen pipes. We Have done everything the water company recommends

Same here.  I do need to shovel some snow that fell yesterday and this a.m.

Our neighbors have been a godsend.

My doctor recommends riding my bike at least 5 miles each day. I average 6X/week. This year I am going to go for every day.

I like this goal because as I get faster on the bike I can exercise less. Right now it is a 27 minute per day commitment.

Good for you!  Are you talking about an exercise bike or a real one?  I just bought an Echelon from Costco.  It's a lot like a Peloton but much cheaper.  My husband just assembled it and it's up and running but other than one 3 mile ride yesterday I haven't been back on it yet.  The seat it came with is so uncomfortable we ordered a comfort seat which should be delivered in a few days.  I used to be an avid road and trail rider but haven't done it in about 8 years so I'll have to start small and build up certain muscles again.  I walk a lot but riding uses some different muscles.

It is a Nordictrack recumbent bike. I hate the seats on the regular exercise bikes. I do have a road bike too. With all of the rain it is easier to take vitamin D and hop on an exercise bike.

I hear you on that.  Somehow it seems like there is less weather good enough for outdoor riding anymore.  Between the miserably hot Summers and cold Winters in my area there isn't a whole lot of ideal weather for it.  I have a road bike too, although I would need to get a new one if I wanted to start up with that again.  At my age that bike is just not going to work for me anymore.  It's a serious road bike with a high bar and toe clips, etc.  I would need more of a "girl's" style bike now, and something scaled a little smaller since I'm only 5'1.5".  I relied on my younger agility with the other bike and I'm not up to whipping my leg over a high bar anymore without potentially hurting myself.  Plus it's just a fact of life that we shrink as we get older.  I am about 1/4 inch shorter than I used to be and I was pretty short to begin with.  We have some great "rails to trails" around here but although this is a relatively very safe area I still don't feel comfortable going out alone anymore on them.  My husband has come with me out walking on occasion but he is not always available to exercise with me.

Good for you with the recumbent!  I've tried them out in stores but never could get used to the riding position for some reason.

Good news, I actually LOST a half a pound over the holidays, LOL.  Now that doesn't happen without a lot of restraint!  I managed to have a few Christmas cookies and light spiked egg nog and two days of my homemade pasta with meatballs and still lose that, so that's great!

That's great! My goal was just not to gain weight during the holidays.

In the beginning, the recumbent bike did feel strange, but I needed it because of several surgeries that were difficult recoveries. Walking was too painful, so my doctor suggested the bike. And then I found I really liked it. I have even been known to use it while I am working, with my computer in the stand. Nobody has picked up on it during the meetings--I throw up a calming background and only do it in larger meetings.

Since I set it up the bike in the living room I can also put on the ride, no sound, and then throw on an episode of Sister Wives after work.

I hear you on losing height, I've lost 1/2 inch. I just tell myself that being 5'6" means the length of my pants is better.

Once I consistently get to 25 minutes for 5 miles, I may add a mile and go back to a 30 minute ride.

I'm not sure if I will go back to my road bike, even though I swapped out the seat for a comfort seat. I also bought an electric bike, which felt more like a car than a bike replacement. It weights 70 pounds, so it has limits for someone my age and health.

I hear you about the e-bikes.  My husband and I were thinking about getting them but when we went to a bike shop and saw how heavy they are we kind of put that idea on hold because based on where we live we would need to drive them to a trail to ride them.  We are in a location where riding the bikes from our house somewhere is not possible (we live on a hill where there are no sidewalks or bike lanes, and off a major road).  So this stationary bike was the best alternative.  We have it set up in our foyer because we are somewhat space-challenged, but at least it rolls and if we need to we can put it out in the garage.

Gyms are not for me anymore.  I actually stopped going to them almost a decade ago because I would get a cold or flu every few months when I belonged (which stopped happening after I quit).  And that's in spite of the rules to wipe down the equipment.  The viruses hang in the air with that many people huffing and puffing on exercise equipment.  I know I've heard that many of them have improved their ventilation but given my experience I would not go back at my age.

Like you, my goal was not to gain weight over the Winter months which are the hardest for me because it's just not possible to get in the amount of walking  that I do at other times of the year.  And I decided against a treadmill because it's just more walking and I missed riding.  So far I managed not to gain weight over the holidays but for me the holidays were never the main problem.  It's those months between January and April where I tend to gain weight unless I find a way to do more exercise.  I have lost 15 and a half pounds over the past few months and am hoping the bike helps me to lose more.

I’ve also fallen in love with riding since I cannot run just yet. My favourite thing to do is use the indoor cycle, but hopping to an elliptical and then a recumbent or stair stepper is also fun and not boring (unfortunately need to be in a gym for this). Walking does me no good unless it’s at an incline and we don’t have a treadmill. There’s nowhere on Long Island to ride long distance without worrying about the d-bag drivers, so I’ll probably stick to indoor for now. Our hometown area has tons of bike trails and I miss those.

While on vacation I’ve been getting day passes to the local YMCA and it’s been great. It’s made me realise that I miss gyms a little bit (former gym rat).

I just got home from 3 days in the hospital. I now have two blood clots instead of just one. Lots of doctor consults followed by many blood tests and boredom waiting for answers. Still have both clots and the medicine I started with. Frustrated but relieved to be home with my kitties. Curious about what your experiences with clots have been, if you've had any.

I'm baaack!!

In the wee hours of Dec16, I fell twice in the house. I tried to crawl to my bed hoping I could sleep through it and be OK the next day. Wrong! I couldn't get up off the floor. (I was almost embarrassed to say to the 911 center that I had fallen and couldn't get up.)

The paramedics were there quickly and rushed me to the Emergency.  Poked, prodded and exrays, turns out I fractured L10 vertebrae, and broke 3 ribs on the right side. Spent 2 nights in Intensive Care (no rooms available) then to a room for 6 days. Then was transferred to rehab on Dec 23. I have to wear an awful brace at least until Feb3. :( I worked hard and did all my PT/OT religiously and was walking on my own about 5 days before I was released on 1-4-23. Heck of a way to spend the Holidays. I walked a lot, many steps weren't captured at rehab, just because...rehab...

Yesterday my friend took me grocery shopping then home.  3,059 steps yesterday.

The thing most care people were astounded by was I never had much pain except for the first night. I have always had a high tolerance for pain but this was above and beyond!

I am home now, taking it easy but walking and doing things all on my own so I consider that a win/win!

Hope everyone has a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Oh, @Gramto6, we've been worried about you!  I'm so sorry that you had such a fall but grateful that you got prompt medical attention and people to take care of you. Rehab is indeed rehab and the time spent walking there DOES count!

I'm so glad you're back!  Happy New Year!

@Gramto6, I am sooooo relieved to hear from you I am crying right now!  We were all very worried about you!!  This is the best news I've had all day....Maybe all month!  So glad to hear you had a friend to help you shop.  Take care of yourself and take it real easy, don't push yourself to do too much too soon and don't hesitate to ask for help locally when you need it.  And of course we are here to listen and provide any support we can if you need to talk about it.  (((Many hugs)). 🤗🤗🤗🤗

Welcome back, @Gramto6 !! We were all so concerned about you. Thank you for updating us. I'm so relieved to hear you're okay and that rehab helped.  What an ordeal! I'm so glad you're back and I second what others have said. Go slow, and call on local friends for help when you need it. Best wishes for ongoing healing.

I'm so glad you're back, @Gramto6. Did they do any procedures to treat the fractured vertebrae, or is it all up to the dang brace?

No, I was really worried I would need surgery for my back but dr said no. So it is up to the brace. I am restricted movement-wise, no bending, no twisting, no reaching high/low, and can't lift more than 10# at a time.  Which in effect means no driving.

My DD bought me a walker from Amazon (will arrive 1/9) so I didn't have to use my Medicare benefit. I am getting around pretty well, but will feel safer when I have it just to help me not fall again.

Thanks. everyone for your kind words!

Just noticed as I was going over my paperwork, it was actually T10 vertebrae I fractured not L10 vertebrae. Oops sorry for the mis-information. Not that it makes that much difference I guess...

I don't think they were focused on the fatigue at all other than to say I was nutritionally challenged. That may have caused the fatigue. After the weeks on the totally inedible food in rehab, I came home literally starving and have been eating just about everything around! Good stuff not junk food.

When I was in rehab for 10 weeks, I had friends smuggle in bottles of Fairlife chocolate protein (30 gm), Mission Carb Balance tortillas to get extra fiber, and dried tart cherries for a little sweet treat. The inedible rehab food didn't have enough of anything of value.

I at least got a Boost Glucose Control drink at lunch. I sadly really didn't have anyone to smuggle food in for me. My room mate was just hitting her 100 Medicare days there and said she mostly ordered chicken noodle soup! I did several times too. At least I was only there about 2 weeks, thank goodness!

Hey @Gramto6it's great to hear you're getting in so many steps after your ordeal.   I only got in 3,461 steps myself but I spent 15 minutes on my stationary bike and burned about 70 calories.  Although that "comfort seat" I ordered, while better than the original seat, is not as comfortable as I would have liked.  Then I noticed that the people who didn't like it were mostly older women.  I found another one by the same manufacturer that seems to have been recommended by a lot of seniors so I'm going to order that one and see if I like it better.

I was amused at the "ride" I took through Manhattan thanks to the app's scenic rides through major cities in the world.  It was all in lower Manhattan starting in the area near the Federal buildings and went around the WTC and then bike lanes uptown.  I've wanted to ride those bike lanes for a long time but they were not there yet when I lived in NYC so I never had the chance.  This is about as close to that as I'm ever going to get.  I only did half the ride before my bum hurt so I still have to see where else it goes, although there are "continuity errors" which if you know an area are annoying because suddenly you find yourself several blocks away from where you just were a second ago, LOL.  But it's a lot of fun so far and there are dozens of scenic rides, plus trainer led rides both "on demand" and live, just like the Peloton.

3,949 steps yesterday.

I am not pushing for any specific number, still taking it easy and just doing the things I have to do.

I think once I am healed I am going to look int treadmills, that way I can walk safely in one place. I'd like one with the scenic views, but I know that is going to be very expensive. I have an elliptical, but that for some reason makes my knees hurt (great place to hang my jacket though LOL!). The treadmill is way down the road at this point ...

As an intermediate step there are Walk Away the Pounds videos free on Youtube.  If you have a Roku, Fire, etc, for your TV, you can watch them and walk.  I like them because I do it by the minutes.

I'm an old lady, too, but the streaming devices are super easy.  I saved over $150 a month cutting the cable cord.

As said above you can watch on a computer or laptop.  I find it's just easier for me on the TV.
